| Overnight Open Thread (3-20-2012)The Awesome - But Soon To Be Banned - 'Pork-Eating Crusader' Patches Well the Afghanis may have gotten tired of American troops, but the Americans have also grown weary of being viewed as sub-human by the backward and benighted culture they're trying to help. And GI Joe ain't a bloomin' fool: In the wake of the recent setbacks in Afghanistan, American commanders are working overtime trying to instill sensitivity among U.S. troops toward their Afghan counterparts and their Islamic culture. But many American service-members already wear their feelings on their sleeves -- sometimes literally -- choosing a powerful term to represent the way they believe they're perceived by the Muslim world: "Infidel." There are infidel hats, infidel T-shirts and infidel uniform patches -- an entire genre of morale wear that emerged from the ashes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Including this patch which includes an image of a knight in a Crusade's tunic, eating a ham hock along with a translation in Arabic to make the point clear. The terminator eyes are a nice touch IMO. "Everybody sort of hates occupying forces anyway, so it's kind of embracing that," he told Military.com "If you are going to hate us anyway, we might as well pretend to be the great white devil." Continued Montgomery: "Originally, when we made the patch, we thought it would be this small thing, the equivalent of an 'I'm with stupid' T-shirt. We didn't think we would sell many, but the demand was there," Montgomery said, describing how his company has sold about 10,000 of the patches. And it's not just a novelty item - here are some German troops sporting the pork-crusader patches in the wild:
Obama - Still Lying About His Mother's Health Insurance Problem It's important to remember that this is no misunderstanding but rather a bald-faced lie. Here's what Obama said during one of his debates with Republican opponent John McCain:"For my mother to die of cancer at the age of 53 and have to spend the last months of her life in the hospital room arguing with insurance companies because they're saying that this may be a pre-existing condition and they don't have to pay her treatment, there's something fundamentally wrong about that."It is true that Ms. Dunham did have a separate dispute about disability insurance but this had nothing to do with pre-existing conditions. Nor did it affect her fight for her life. And given that her son acted as her attorney, there's no doubt he was not ignorant of the truth of the matter. And a lie worth telling once - is worth retelling: As Glenn Kessler writes today in the Washington Post's Fact Checker column, the president's much ballyhooed campaign biography film "The Road We've Traveled," narrated by Tom Hanks repeats the same line that Scott debunked. The Insane B-52 Low Pass Flyby Okay this is old but still pretty damn awesome: These images were taken in 1990 in the Persian Gulf. US carriers and B-52s were conducting joint exercises when two of the bombers requested permission for a low pass. While it's a high altitude bomber, the B-52s also fly at low altitudes to avoid enemy radar and air defenses. When the B-52s approached the carrier, they announced they were six miles away but the carrier controllers couldn't see them because they weren't looking down. How Gen. Grant Tried To Make The South Judenfrei Well at least the part of the south that he controlled. On Dec. 17, 1862, as the Civil War entered its second winter, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant issued the most notorious anti-Jewish official order in American history: "The Jews, as a class violating every regulation of trade established by the Treasury Department and also department orders, are hereby expelled from the department within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this order." Known as General Orders No. 11, the document blamed Jews for the widespread smuggling and cotton speculation that affected the area under Grant's command. And it was only due to a raid by Nathan Bedford Forrest and the personal intervention of Abraham Lincoln that Order No. 11 was not fully carried out. Little Known Statistics on Sex and Marriage

Orwell's comments about "rough men" need to be repeated over and over. Soldiers are not in a gentle profession, and the kind of humor that you find among them reflects that. Unfortunately, too many even in our own country don't understand it. Part of the problem is that many people have an overly glamorous view of the military, and forget that you have to be a little maladjusted to work well in that environment. I say this as someone who loves working with Joe, even when he is being an absolute dipshit.

Evening y'all
Maet, thanks for an awesome ONT. You truly have a gift. I am laughing at the Germans sporting the patch in the wild. At the German Embassy in Riyadh, they imported a large pig for Octoberfest by calling it a guard dog. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but they got the thing in. It made a wonderful roast. Mmmm, roast pig!!! Posted by: moki at March 20, 2012 10:30 PM (dZmFh) 10

Well, it depends on what particular duchy or city state of what we now know of as "Germany" that you are talking about. The different city states and duchies were always fighting (to some degree) amongst themselves, and changing alliances. The French became "nationalized" earlier, and embrace many martial virtues, plus the innate haughtiness to anyone not priviledged to be born a Frenchman. Which is about the only thing that has survived to this day. I think Napolean's excesses started to bleed out their martial notions, and WWI put the capper on it. WWI killed a whole lot of young French soldiers and wrecked a good part of the countyr - for pretty much nothing. That sort of thing would kick the guts out of any country. Posted by: Reader C.J. Hello, 'rons and 'ettes.
Divorce shortens a man's lifespan by up to seven years? Well, that's one other thing I can blame her for. (Just kidding...kind of.) First day at work at the new radio station today. It went pretty well, the owner told me he really liked my opening line. The high from a great first day is balanced by the fact that I'll need to buy another car. The timing chain broke and parts of it somehow got into other parts of the engine, and it'll cost more to fix than I could get on a trade-in. So my fresh start is now even fresher! When I'm not here, I'm reading "Righteous Indignation" on my smartphone. AB sure had some huge ones. I also found a hardcover copy of "The Reagan Diaries" at a used book store for just ten bucks, and I'm looking forward to starting that. I have a hard heart when it comess to the sensativities of people who live in and run a barbaric community. A pig patch seems more likely to get a reaction out of them than a girl getting raped, maimed, disfigured or killed for trying to read. They can take the gore, but can't take the patch? "Where is Hildebeast getting the funds to hunt for Amelia Earhart?" I've read that Earhart was a disaster as a pilot. IIRC she was viewed as an airborne menace who couldn't fly or navigate for shit (much less parallel park -sorry). She apparently never really learned Morse code, and consequently ditched the powerful transmitter used for Morse code in favor of one that transmitted voice, albeit with much shorter range. The ability to use Morse code apparently would have given her (and her co-pilot, who was IIRC a drunk) a chance to transmit their location at a range when her voice transmissions were problematic. So ... Earhart was basically an early casualty of PC and affirmative action. Let's pretend this chick is a worthy pilot, even though she's not. Earhardt was very cool. One of my first heroes in life, actually. Although they've known about this thing for quite some time and, given the fact (I also read it) that this effort is being privately funded, one has to wonder what ol' Hillarity was doing with it at all.

It is faux outrage. To hell with 'em. Speaking of multiculturalism, here is one of Mark Steyn's greatest hits concerning that: In a more culturally confident age, the British in India were faced with the practice of "suttee" - the tradition of burning widows on the funeral pyres of their husbands. Gen. Sir Charles Napier was impeccably multicultural: "You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: When men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks, and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours." Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at March 20, 2012 11:05 PM (TCgGe) 129

It's essentially Call of Duty: Zombies.
It's Resident Evil, but it's not Resident Evil. If that makes any sense. They've completely given up on what made RE1-RE Code Veronica fun. They still use that behind the back screen shot I don't care for. The one that became standard fare in RE 4. It's not awful or anything. It's just different from what RE used to be and it's awfully familiar to every other generic shooter out there. Although the RE story makes it more interesting to me. 283 Hey Kratos, I picked up the game today.
Nice. I may pick up RE: Operation Raccoon City later, but as for right now, I've got my plate full with some other games. Multitasking games is not my forte. The most fun from RE: Operation Raccoon is probably going to come from the multiplayer, especially with the opportunity to play other RE characters. The single-player campaign will most likely be adequate, but from what I've seen thus far, the objectives will likely be very linear. Hope you enjoy it though. >>As for the RE games, hasn't there been talk about rebooting the entire series again?
I don't know. RE 6 is coming out in November or something. It's supposed to take off where RE 5 left off. Operation Racoon City is a complete departure. It takes place between RE2 and RE3. I feel as though RE4 was a reboot in terms of game play. Everything after that has been similar. It's not about strategy, conserving resources, survival horror, unlocking puzzles and passwords anymore. Posted by: Ben at March 21, 2012 12:12 AM (UvdzB) 296

I had one of those experiences in person today, and didn't quite get it out of my system. At the time, I think I was itching for a dustup, but couldn't find a dance partner. Some good cheer for you this Tuesday eve, fellow morons.
I believe that everything happens for a reason. Obviously if we had our way, the R ticket would be something faintingly awesome, like Ryan-West. But it's not. We've got Mitt, and Mitt is, well, Mitt. In the meantime we've been squirming as this primary grinds on and on and on. Today I read this following line in a Corner post about Romney's IL speech: "Tonight voters saw a Romney who has, thanks to the long primary, improved as a candidate." I'm quite sure he'll let us down enormously once behind the desk, but I'm willing to admit that tonight dude at least SAID some good things, reacting pretty quickly to King Putt's idiotic Wikifried "Boy, are past people in the past stoopid or what?" speech. He saw Obama's historical Columbus hash and raised him a Wright brothers who would have been shut down by Dodd-Frank. I think we can agree that Romeny wasn't there a month ago. This primary has forced him to sharpen has he goes, and it's all making him better for the main event. We'd rather a short primary and an out-of-the-box great candidate, of course, but for the moment, I am grateful that God saw the cookie dough scraps of Romney and this crapass process and is scraping it together for a somewhat functional, slightly more tasty cookie. @314 He had a lot of good ones, I LOL'ed because I saw them as a response to Obama's crap about R's being supposedly backward. The way I remember it, the Wright Brothers comment was about how they would have been shut down for kicking up too much dust. I particularly enjoyed the crack about how, under Obama, we can't even build a damn pipeline. We normally don't watch that stuff, but we caught the beginning and couldn't turn away. My 19 year-old daughter usually isn't that interested (because she doesn't know a lot of the backstory) but demanded we keep it on. She really enjoyed it. Growing up as a young kid in the 70's I thought that "pollack" was an insult that meant stupid. Both my parent's last names end in "ski".
Aside from "pole" being the correct term, once I read about the real history of Poland and her people- the only country that didn't surrender after being occupied by the Nazis- did I understand that I descended from some Bad Motherfuckers. How do this?
Posted by: Robert at March 21, 2012 01:20 AM (4ixH5) Most models of players have a secret bunch of keys to hit on the remote that will set the region code. Code 0 is an open player, that'll play all codes. If you search the player unlock code, around 3 or 4 deep you'll find a site -- possibly Russian -- where they'll have the combination. Once you press "load/unload" + "OK" + "Fast Forward" [or whatever], it puts up a nice menu for setting regions, and you just set the region you want (probably 0). In the early 2000s Shenoute III attached himself to the Palestinian cause, and that annoyed me. I also felt it was self-defeating, given that the Palestinians' treatment of Christians is far worse than the Israelis'. Non-Muslims (including heretic-Muslims like the Alawiyya) need to band together, in the Near East as outside it.
In his last few years of life, Shenoute seems to have dropped the Palestinian issue as the loser it is. He concentrated on preserving his own people, the indigenous culture of Egypt. I worry that it was too little and too late. Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at March 21, 2012 01:33 AM (QTHTd) 368

Gotta love the BUF.
That's a ride I'd like to take.2-300 mph 20' off the water. Good place to do it; nice and calm. As for Reagan's doodles, some liberal 'tard professor type was pontificating about how Reagan's doodles showed he was disengaged with what was going on. Me, I think it shows a mind occupied with creative thinking. I find that doodling acts as a mental 'hold' while one thinks of solutions to problems or listens to descriptions of problems that need resolution. It's a displacement activity. Does anyone really sit down and just think? (the crapper doesn't count and besides that's displacement activity also.) Not a bad artist either. Bers, I sure don't get what everyone sees in that guy, ... Posted by: Theresa at March 21, 2012 01:15 AM (nrUaS) ====== This is rather convoluted, so please try to bear with me. I have a theory -- Here is part 1: leftists were put on earth so the rest of us would always understand projection (yes, I get the irony of my own statement) -- but I am serious, anytime you want to know what a leftist is up to, just look at what they are accusing other people of doing. part 2: a classic case of leftist projection occurred when Whoopi sez it wasn't "rape rape" for a mogul to slip a 13 yo girl a 'lude and do her in the pooper. Conclusion on my part -- Whoopi has done the casting couch before and just projected her willingness to be done in the pooper by a mogul onto some 13 yo girl she never actually met. part 3: the Whoopi thing confirmed for me the rumor about casting couches is more than just a rumor. part 4: a few weeks ago there was a whole rumor mill about mogul pedophiles in Hollywood centered around the Corys. part 5: "that guy" was a child actor, too. Conclusion: what "everyone sees in that guy" is probably: well-placed blowies and his willingness to go face down on the casting couch. How about that for some shitty logic and a really long damn trip around to get to the point? Good thing I been working on my skillz. Posted by: jc at March 21, 2012 01:40 AM (ufJKx) 374

I wouldn't doubt those marriage stats. I got ribbed for years about being almost 4 inches shorter than my ex (though we were roughly the same weight.) It's a heck of a setup for the guy; she's always going to "feel fat" when she's with you and you're always going to be seen as some kind of perv for dating/marrying an amazon. And people NEVER fail to point you two out as an aberration of nature. My former father-in-law once busted a gut after suggesting wedress as Jessica Roger Rabbit for Halloween. Fun times. Not that our dimensional mismatch was any cause for the implosion of the relationship, but yeah, it didn't help. Posted by: Tad Blatherton at March 21, 2012 02:27 AM (HueOF) 410

Failing to pass a budget would not only be hypocritical but also irresponsible and a dereliction of duty. They are allowing their differences to divide them to the extent that they are increasingly dysfunctional and they have seemingly forgotten that Obama is the enemy. Today, I was delighted to walk into my local Barnes Noble and see the first three volumes of Toradora! for sale. I bought them all.
I discovered that manga series through fansubs a couple of years ago, but then the fansubs stopped coming. I'm glad to know now that it was because the series has been officially licensed. Having devoured those first three volumes, I plan to go back to BN ASAP to order whatever other volumes are available. It's a delightful romantic comedy, with characters who are unusally deep and complex, and somewhat unique. Posted by: Genetic Tunder at March 21, 2012 03:01 AM (ig4FA) 442

And processors. And playback. None of which go together like WMP. Part of the problem is that DVDs have menus and CDs have songs. If I'm going to rip movies/TV series/video collections in multiple regions -- and we're talking quite a few of 'em -- there needs to be some thought as to a comprehensive user interface......and that's what's lacking. If you don't mind the bulk of the DVD format, you can just convert them to ISO files. Plenty of media playback systems will handle those, which means it just looks like a DVD in a remote drive. There are free utilities to do it in Windows 7 and it's built in on Windows 8. Myself, I'd rather forego the menus and just reduce them to a bunch of properly named files in a better codec. But chances are someone has already done that and made a torrent of it. If you own the actual discs there is no offense in making use of those. Recently I upgraded to a router that also supports using a USB drive as DLNA server. I have a 2 TB Seagate plugged in and except for MKV everything plays great on the PS3, Xbox, and all of the computers in the house. You can ISO all these bad boys, but still not archive them properly ("remote drive" -> mount/unmount....). You can convert formats and lose the menus and special features. You can manually piece together a bunch of stuff, and spend more time up front than you'll ever save in a lifetime of clicking the movie over finding it in a box..... When you rip CD's, it attaches album art, files it away in a logical manner, and adds it to your "library". Where's the DVD version? Posted by: cthulhu at March 21, 2012 04:03 AM (kaalw) 523

Posted by: Adriane at March 21, 2012 04:33 AM (crQEo) ====== Stealing and slavery are actually the same thing. We are all born at a particular minute and we all die on some particular day. The same that makes us all the same is the limited amount of time we have between our birth and our death. We trade our time to get our possessions. So, taking our possessions is just the same as taking our time. BTW, the slavery party is completely fucked up about "fairness." The only thing that could possibly be fair is for everyone to own the entirety of their own lives. And, of course, the slavery party opposes that concept with every single fiber of their entire beings. They wouldn't know fairness if it spent the night stuck to their faces and jumped out of their chest the next day. Posted by: jc at March 21, 2012 04:41 AM (ufJKx) 550

"It isn't about the money..." Posted by: Adriane at March 21, 2012 04:47 AM (crQEo) ============= One of our biggest problems is we have lost track of the simple fact that money is just a representation of our time. Time matters, and nothing else is anywhere near as significant as time. There is a reason prison sentences are measured in time. A nuke is the ace of trump of human time -- it can erase your present, your future, and all traces of your past. Time -- the most important political subject and the one we talk about the least. Welfare queens are poor. Really? They seem rich in Time to me. Who is poorer -- the working stiff paying the taxes to feed the welfare queen or the welfare queen? At the end of the week, which one had the most time? Posted by: jc at March 21, 2012 04:55 AM (ufJKx) 560

It's a copyright issue thing. The DVD menus are covered under the copyright and reproducing them give an avenue of attack. Thus most publicly available software avoids the issue. There was a lot of lawyer participation in the DVD spec in recognition of what was already happening to CDs back then. You don't have to lose the extras and commentary. MKV supports multiple audio tracks and plenty of the DVD-RIP torrents I've pulled down had the deleted scenes or making of type stuff included. The only down side of MKV is the game consoles won't support. The first time I downloaded such a set I wasn't aware of all MKV supported and couldn't get rid of the commentary track in WMP. I needed to use VLC for the ability to select tracks where the commentary is mistakenly placed on the default track. Posted by: epobirs at March 21, 2012 04:59 AM (kcfmt) 563

There is an old saying that "Time is Money." It is wrong. However, the opposite is true. Money is Time. Lots of other things are Time, too. Volcanos, plate tectonics, orbits, glaciers, plants, and thousands of other things are also Time without also being money.

VLC is an open source media player that originated from a student project in France. Plays EVERYTHING or damn well tries to.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ MKV is a file format for video. Not a codec, it is a wrapper. Thus a file containing multiple audio tracks with the video appear to be a single file. It's a variant of a ZIP archive specialized for video. A lot of the little media player boxes will play it and many Blu-ray players support it. (I was really suprised when my sister's Samsung setup handled a DVD I had burned of the movie of Terry Pratchett's 'Going Postal.' It just worked.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matroska Posted by: epobirs at March 21, 2012 05:13 AM (kcfmt) 575

Yes he was, but then again, so was Grant and just about everyone in 1861 when judged by today's standards. He is also one of the best of the war generals of that era. He is up there with J.E.B. Stuart and Lee as best of the best. Posted by: Vic at March 21, 2012 06:00 AM (YdQQY) 599

Over 2% of all heart attacks have been directly attributed to having a broken heart.
------------------------ I have to throw the BS flag on that. Stress has been ruled out in heart attack causes under the latest "studies". The primary cause of heart attacks is heredity. Smoking is the second biggest cause. Diet and (lack of) exercise bring up the next big causes. And final note to Nanny Bloomberg, salt has nothing to do with it. yes Vic could be a record and it's been warm 60's-70's for the last couple weeks. the climatetards while always spewing the spew find few that regret having to shell out 500 bucks a month for fuel oil... most are enjoying the heck out of the whole mild winter.. The climatards always spew its just weather when you have record cold then AGW when you have record warm. Here they are neglecting the reason for the warming trends this Winter.
The jet stream shift caused by the Pacific ocean has kept the cold up in Canada while it has allowed the warm below it. AK has had record cold and snows while WA has record warm. And speaking of warm/cold weather, my MIL got an estimate for a 2.5 ton Trane heat pump, including redoing a couple of vent ducts in her kitchen. They guy wants $10,000 for this work. Have any of you recently replaced a heat pump and does that sound right?
I replaced mine about 10 years ago for less than half of that, including some duct work also. Posted by: Vic at March 21, 2012 06:48 AM (YdQQY) 614
The jet stream shift caused by the Pacific ocean has kept the cold up in Canada
Ya Vic, they can't say much here as we had snow and cold in most of the state and on the other side of the lake so unless they can come up with a "localized climate warming" theory their sucking wind... oh yeah the state AG lost another case against VY,, the tards are hysterically now trying to replace him to waste more tax dollars on the war on nukes... @AltonJackson: I'm working at what's called "Classic Hits" in the biz. It's really the modern equivalent of the oldies format, with songs ranging from the mid-60s to the late-80s and an emphasis on the 70s. It's more pop song titles than classic rock (though some of those songs are in the mix), and for a guy like me who grew up on Top 40 radio in the 70s and 80s, it's a pretty cool gig. Unfortunately, we're not streaming, but you can hear my own non-com online station if you click the sig (it's different from the day job in that I also play current tracks).
The day job is in a small market near Oklahoma City. Funny you should mention Detroit...I was born in that area, and still have family there. I haven't visited in over 30 years, though. Posted by: Captain Whitebread at March 21, 2012 10:10 AM (dHwuO) 625
