Michael Bloomberg Refuses Donations of Food for the Homeless as Too High In Salt, Fat

I'm beginning to think that maybe we don't have a genuine problem with real poverty, or something.

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.

Apparently the edict requires agencies to turn away food if they don't have full information on its nutrition content. A thoroughly stupid bit of bureaucratic idiocy, as usual. Bloomberg himself (noted to be a "salt-a-holic") appears embarrassed by the nanny state he's created and suggests maybe it's not such a good edict.

"Sea Salt" is a marketing myth started by Campbell's soup company. Look it up in your "diet book". There is virtually no difference between sea salt and table salt.

As for the blood pressure myth that has been around for a long time. What is bad is that major healthcare people like the mayo clinic still promote it depsite the overwhelming evidence that the only people who have a problem with salt intake or "salt sensitive" people and people who have congestive heart failure.
When I first has my heart attack I did a ton of research on this and there was so much conflicting information that I did an experiment. I ate salty potato chips all day long, taking my blood pressure hourly. The huge salt intake had absolutely zero impact on my blood pressure despite eating it all day long.

At the end of the day, all remaining opened food on display must be tossed into the trash. I was there until the close one night at one buffet. They threw out around three 30 gallon trash cans full of fresh food. There are probably 20 buffets in the metro area.

It cannot be donated to anyone; I know because I asked them. They do wind up selling it to pig farmers for a few cents per pound at the place I talked to.

Thanks for reminding me how much I hate this creep.

A few months back, I got on the subway to meet a friend in Manhattan. The trip would normally have encompassed two trains, one transfer, and I would've gotten there in 30 mins max. Due to weekend repairs, general buffoonery, system errors and whatnot, I ended up travelling backwards into Brooklyn 3 stops, making three transfers, and walking across Central Park for a total trip that took approximately an hour anda half. To add insult to injury, when I had gotten on the final train, I was greeted with an ad tellingme the distance I would have had to walk fromManhattan to Brooklyn to walk off the calories in a sugary drink. As if somehow, at that point, walking that distance wasn't actually the preferable option to navigating the fucked-up rip-off ofasubway system.

This POS can'tmake anything run except these ridiculous schemes.

163 The United States is offering some breathing room in its seemingly ironclad set of sanctions against Iran, underscoring the difficulty the U.S. and other countries may have in truly freezing out the Iranian regime.

At the same time, the United States is allowing for the export of food, medicine and related products to Iran, under a long-established exemption for humanitarian items.
And that trade has spiked in recent weeks, with Iran buying wheat from the United States for the first time in three years.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. companies have sold 180,000 tons of the staple crop to Iran in the past month.

Paul Frampton, 68, of Chapel Hill, N.C., was arrested in Buenos Aires on Jan. 23. He is currently being held at Devoto Prison and U.S. consular officers have visited the British-born particle phenomenologist twice since his arrest and have provided appropriate assistance, a U.S. State Department spokesperson told FoxNews.com on Tuesday.

Frampton -- who "absolutely did not" try to smuggle drugs out of the South American county, according to his ex-wife -- told The News & Observer that 2 kilograms of cocaine were cleverly built into a piece of his luggage without his knowledge. The drugs were discovered in his checked bag en route to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

270 Navy reopens Marine Corps Medal of Honor case
By Gina Cavallaro - Staff writer
Posted : Tuesday Mar 20, 2012 15:29:06 EDT
The Navy Department will reopen the valor case of Marine Corps Sgt. Rafael Peralta based on new evidence that reportedly removes any doubt about the infantryman’s actions during his waning moments of life seven years ago in Iraq.

The new evidence — two previously unseen videos and a recent study by a renowned forensic pathologist — was brought to the attention of the Navy Secretary Ray Mabus by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a former Marine officer and combat veteran who has lobbied for Peralta to receive the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest combat valor award

AFP - British Prime Minister David Cameron on Tuesday revealed
he was "tucked up in bed" by US President Barack Obama during the
pair's recent trip on Air Force One.

The two leaders were repeatedly seen back-slapping and sharing jokes
during Cameron's recent US visit, but now it appears the friendship was
sealed when the president offered Cameron the use of his personal
quarters.

"It was 4 o'clock UK time so he (Obama) said 'David, why don't you
use my bed and put your feet up,' so I duly did," he told members of his
constituency in Witney, south England.

"Barack went to the back of the plane and explained to my private
secretary and the team 'don't worry, the British Prime Minister is fine I
have just tucked him up in bed'. I don't think that has happened
before," added Cameron.

304 Exploding number of food stamp recipients, but let's cut down the number of homeless people who receive bagels because we can't measure the salt content. If the church would have paid a couple grand to get those bagles analyzed at a lab, we wouldn't have needed the FOOD POLICE. After all, we Nutty Libbers would rather send this food to feed all the pigeons in NYC than feed the homeless anywhere in America.

335 The reason salt is so cheap now is the huge salt mine underneath
Michigan. Google that up some time. I watched a TV special about it a
few years ago. It was a real education.

Vic,

I had a chance to go down into the Detroit Salt Mine in 2007 for a mining engineering class. It was amazing. I don't know if the documentary mentioned it, but they had to take all of the equipment apart and drop it in down the 1200 foot shaft, in an11x 11 foot skiff.

They packed our class of 15 students (plus instructor and Senior Mining Eng.)into that skiff and dropped us down like we were a load of salt. It was terrifying, but worth it once we got down there.

Apparently, it is the only woman-owned mine in the US. We didn't get to meet the owner, but we did get to take home samples of the salt rock. So I call it a win.

I get mail order MYO tobacco and filtered tubes. I use a little injector machine. They cost anywhere from $10 for a decent hand machine to $40 for a good crank machine to $500 for a top-of-the-line injector that can spit out packs of perfect cigarettes like no ones business. I use a little hand injector. Works well. If you smoke a pack a day or more you'll probably do best with a crank machine, which is much quicker.
There are ultralight tubes and all sorts of filter types, so you can probably find something. I've tried an assortment of tubes and tobaccos and have a few I really like. They all cost between $1 and $2 an ounce, where it takes 3/4 of an ounce of tobacco to make a pack. Filter tubes cost a couple of cents each - say $3/carton.
Search "MYO cigarettes" and you'll find a bunch of stuff. To get you oriented, I use rollyourown dot com. I like Kentucky Red Select, but that is a very heavy tobacco. See what you find. The cost savings are incredible. And if you smoke a lot, you can get an electric injector for about $100 that I hear is very good and efficient.

Just to clarify, these aren't rolled cigarettes. They're injected, normal cigarettes. The tubes are normal cigarette tubes (not papers) with the filters already in them and you just inject the tobacco. They're just regular cigarettes in kits. The reason they're so cheap is because the tobacco is classified as either pipe tobacco or dual-use and doesn't get hit with the cigarette tax. That might not continue for much longer.

467 In Houston they are trying to require anyone who gives food to the homeless to pass restaurant style health code requirements and licensing. Lots of homeless people falling over because the food they were given didn't pass health code inspection - it is much safer for them to rummage in dumpsters for their food.

As a local Houston commenter pointed out: "We have the problems of this city so under control that city council is reduced to worrying about this."

Posted by: An Observation at March 21, 2012 10:05 AM (ylhEn)

468 Something that the article does not make clear is that these appear to be homeless shelters run by the city government.

This is an important distinction. Bloomberg, as the chief executive of the city's government, probably has the authority to decide such things when it comes to shelters financed and run by the city government. Government agencies can do whatever they want, no matter how stupid. The best way to respond to such stupidity is to vote for someone else, if not with your ballot then with your feet.

Were he attempting to dictate what private charitable organizations can do, then that would be another matter entirely. I'm not aware of any legal arguments that would give a mayor the authority to regulate private entities in such a manner.

The article needs to be re-written to make it clear that we are talking about shelters organized and paid for by the city, if indeed that is the case. I'm assuming that it is because that is the only way the mayor would even have the authority to issue such a dictate in the first place.
