Time To Boycott HBO

I've never been a big supporter of boycotts - mostly because they tend to devolve into a laundry list of companies that you're supposed to shun over trivial 3-degrees-of-separation sins.

But in this case HBO is one company I'm willing to make an exception for. They've crossed enough lines and shown themselves to be such a partisan network of active anti-conservative hate that I'm willing to burn a few calories to see them suffer.

Here are just a few of their more recent insults...

They hushed up Alexandra Pelosi's video on welfare queens since it goes against The Narrative:

Alexandra Pelosi debuted a video she made for HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" last night. The video shows multiple welfare recipients in New York City proclaiming they were at the welfare office to get their "Obama bucks" and that they supported Obama because he "gives me stuff." Pelosi reported that people at the HBO headquarters in New York had said to her "you can't show this" even though just last week the ran a controversial video showing Mississippi voters saying inflammatory things against the president.

They produced and hyped the movie, "Game Change", and went so far as to make up details just so they could get in a few more kicks to Sarah Palin years after she last ran for office:

Game_Change_2012_poster

And then there's the fact that they continue to have this hateful, dwarf of a man as their premier 'comedian' while tut-tuting over something Rush said:

Bill_Maher_97

Okay we get it HBO - you hate conservatives and want to broadcast Democratic propaganda. That's your right - but then don't be surprised when you start reaping all the hate you've sown.

Another Moron Writes A Book

But this time it's the good kind of moron - our own Wyatt Earp has co-written a murder mystery book set in where else but Philly. You can check it out (and buy it) here and here. And since Wyatt will soon be rolling in the lucrative self-publishing $$$, now's probably the time to start sucking up to him.

Quote of the Day

What Would Happen If Washington DC Got Nuked?

Well DHS and FEMA have made a report detailing the likely consequences which you can read here.

Unfortunately, our instincts can be our own worst enemy. The bright flash of detonation would be seen instantaneously throughout the region and may cause people to approach windows to see what is happening just as a blast wave breaks the window. For a 10-kT detonation, glass can be broken with enough force to cause injury out to 3 miles and can take more than 10 seconds to reach this range.
Another urge to overcome is the desire to flee the area (or worse, run into fallout areas to reunite with family members), which can place people outdoors in the first few minutes and hours when fallout exposures are the greatest. Those outside or in vehicles will have little protection from the penetrating radiation coming off fallout particles as they accumulate on roofs and the ground. .For those in good shelters, such as a large concrete, brick, or underground structure, optimal shelter times will likely be in terms of days.

5 Ridiculous Cold War Myths You Learned in History Class

Well I would argue with the author's idea that the US started the arms race out of nowhere - there's a lot more to the strategic balance of power than just nukes vs. nukes.

But it is true that JFK didn't call himself a jelly doughnut in Berlin:

They point out that "Ich bin Berliner" means "I am from Berlin," and that adding the "ein" changes the meaning. Both facts are true. A rough English equivalent of what Kennedy said was "I am a New Yorker," whereas the phrase the pedantic jack offs claim he should have said translates to "I am from New York." The jelly doughnut myth is like claiming that an audience in Manhattan heard a politician say "I am a New Yorker" and took him to mean "I am a New Yorker magazine." Saying "I am a New Yorker" makes more sense as a symbolic statement of solidarity, and it's the same in German. Which is why people who speak German generally compliment Kennedy's choice as being the more nuanced, conversational phrasing.

Priest Denies Lesbian Woman Communion at Her Mother's Funeral

And Michael Rosenwald at the WaPo is outraged:

"He put his hand over the body of Christ and looked at me and said, 'I can't give you Communion because you live with a woman, and in the eyes of the church, that is a sin,' " Barbara Johnson told my colleague Michelle Boorstein in a gripping story

But Don Surber has the rest of the story. And needless to say the arrogance is all on Johnson's side.

Yesterday, over in the Tatler (which had two threads about this), someone claimed that a really high-level Buddhist could also be a Catholic; it would be a high expression of spirituality.

My personal take on that was that, clearly, this is someone who does not care about any faith, and this was purest sophistry.

I agree with you wholeheartedly there Alex. I'm not much of a church goer myself, not anymore. But it just irritates me to no end when I see these idiots bitching about what one religion believes or practices because the religion doesn't fit their views.

Now I'm no theologian, but it seems to me that the whole idea of a religion is that it's supposed to be God's word, and your supposed to conform to it, not the other way around.

It would be hard to find two religions more distinct then Christianity and Buddhism. One cannot be both.

In the former we are inherently fallen and require divine grace to be redeemed. The latter teaches that we can redeem ourselves through our actions and that if their are powers greater then ourselves they at best can provide examples of correct living.

215 Hrm, that was interesting.

Over this weekend, neighbor knocks on my door, wants to know if I'm interested in picking up a pair of speakers for $40. Hrm, seems like a decent deal, let's research the model # and figure out what it's really worth. Pioneer CS-905, looks good.

But I don't have a receiver/speaker amp, so he sets me up for a Merantz 2226b for $120. Again, do my research, looks like a decent item.

Got the system set up yesterday, listened to a few songs, felt pretty impressed with the audio quality (able to crank it loud, great clarity vs. my dinky computer speakers; reminded me of my brother's M-Audio studio monitors). Was pretty happy.

Tonight, he offers another set of speakers he has sitting around for $50, and this time I skipped the research step cause I was so happy with the previous items. Agreed, received the items. First thing I do is do a quick internet search to check the pedigree of this set of speakers - "Acoustic Monitor dB IV".

"White Van Speaker". Ruh-roh.

Any thoughts from audio geeks on the items I got? Would like to know what the real value of this stuff is.

I dropped HBO and all of the "movie channels" a long time back and I haven't missed them at all. This was long before they went uber-liberal.

My beef was that HBO in particular only had about 2 or 3 movies that were "new" and they played them over and over and over again, with a lot of really crappy filler in between. Seemed kind of silly to keep paying them when half the time their would only be maybe 1 or 2 movies on every 6 months or so that I might actually be interested in watching.

I've got no problem with folks wanting to be part of a community. I think that's a natural thing for most people. But I guess my thought process is very similar to yours, if the community you want to join doesn't seem to accept you, seems a little silly to try to force yourself on them and make them change their customs and traditions instead of just going and finding a community that will accept you.

224Why in the hell is Miley Cyrus in the top ten?
Posted by: Adam Smith's Invisible Pimp Hand

Well, let's look at what they wrote.

From 2011-2012, Miley Cyrus not only became a human being by crossing the line into being in her 20s, but went through some pretty radical changes. From boycotting Urban Outfitters for stealing from independent artists, to write a whole piece for a magazine about marriage equality, to even tweeting out a really nice, wholesome atheist sentiment, Miley's taken a turn that nobody could've guessed as far as rebellion goes.
She didn't go out and show everyone her naked body (although I'm sure there's some of that going around), but she shocked everyone by becoming a functional member of adult society. It's hard to tear out of her hardcore conservative, Christian upbringing, but it seems like she's doing it more and more lately.
So here's to the Irish-blooded girl who nobody saw coming.

So she get's cause points. It's like Maxim's 100 Hottest Women. 99 under 25's, under size 2's, and Michelle Obama. For the cause!

243 And since Portal is getting mentioned. Two things for people who may not have ever gotten to see.
First is Mari0 A combination of classic Mario Brothers and giving him a functioning Portal gun. http://stabyourself.net/mari0/

And the other is movie short called Portal: No Escape. The guy that made it deserves to direct a video game movie. He'd probably actually do a good job at it. http://tinyurl.com/6bvqgp8

256 Well her mom started dating before the ink was even dry on the
divorce.. and it did not go over well at all. I had pretty much decided
not to date at all until she turned 18 as a result, and while I might
reconsider that I won't do anything that is going to make matters worse
for my daughter. I just can't.

Well, it's likely that mom was dating before the ink was dry, or at least your daughter suspects that to be so. It's also likely that mom tried to force the new boyfriend into everyone's life really quickly, which makes it seem like she's replacing you. I think if you want to date, just be honest with your daughter that you are seeing someone, but that you are taking it slow, and that you won't be trying to bring this woman into her life until she's ready.

258 Never had HBO. Had cable service once when I lived in a town built at the bottom of a hole where we couldn't get broadcast, but even then I was too cheap to get the premium channels.

On the other hand, we did get the NASA channel, and that was pretty awesome because I got to watch the Sojourner probe landing live. It was neat to see the contrast between the Shuttle control center in Houston and the operations room at JPL. NASA Houston looks like the bridge of the Enterprise, if Captain Kirk and everyone else wore short-sleeved button-down cotton-poly blend shirts and clip-on neckties. JPL looks like someone moved a few spare workstations into the grad-student lounge.

When in doubt, bet on the team with the crappy-looking control room.

I think if you want to date, just be honest with your daughter that you are seeing someone, but that you are taking it slow, and that you won't be trying to bring this woman into her life until she's ready."

Well before I'd even start to date I'd need to sit down with my daughter and ask her what she thinks about the idea of Dad starting to date again. Wouldn't be fair to anyone I might date to say, "Hey, lets start dating" then a few months later have to turn around and say, "Oh, by the way we can't see each other anymore".

So first we'll see how she is on the whole concept, then we'll go from there. Not to mention the fact that this thing is just fraught with all sorts of problems from the get go.. lol - well, one bridge at a time I guess.

Well keep in mind she's still awfully young. My oldest went through a phase for a while where - well I won't bore you with the gory details but suffice to say it was really horrible.

She's starting to get herself back on track though - and the older she gets the more she's starting to get her priorities in order. It's a slow process, but it's happening.

Well at the risk of causing a riot or being beaten severely about the head and shoulders or being deafened by the shouts demanding my man card get taken away, I have to admit:

I don't really follow pro ball anymore.

Ok, before everyone starts reaching for torches and pitchforks, let me explain:

Years and years ago I was a Vikings fan. I followed them for years, ever since I was a kid really.

But between the strike and the whole Warren Moon thing - well, I just pretty much lost interest. I like watching my team win as much as the next guy, but I absolutely cannot cheer for a guy who beats his wife and behaves like a thug, nor can I support any organization that condones that kind of behavior.

I still really enjoy college football, but the pros - not so much.

That and most of us are total jackasses in our late teens and early 20's. Many of us outgrow it, some of course never do - just expressing my hope that she'll be one of the former rather than one of the later.

313 I'm a Broncos fan, and I do really like Peyton Manning, but I'm highly skeptical about this move. I don't think it's the best option for Manning or the Broncos. With a Swiss cheese offensive line and a butter-fingered receiving corps, I think they're in for a rough time next year. I'm afraid Manning will end up doing for the team what Tony Dorsett did (i.e., nothing).

I hope I'm wrong.

I agree that this move was really all about getting rid of Tebow in a way that wouldn't piss off all his fans. I hope wherever he ends up he's a big success.

Actually, I don't have to hope. He will be.

314 "Agreed. This trade seems to be all about Elway's ego and that's hardly a sound basis for decision making."

First... it's not a trade. Peyton Manning is a free agent.

Second... While Tebow is an entirely likable guy, he isn't nearly as capable. Sure, elway may have an ego, but I imagine he has a real good understanding of what it takes to be a Super Bowl winning QB. Unfortunately, Tebow doesn't have the skill set necessary.

They point out that "Ich bin Berliner" means "I am from Berlin," and that adding the "ein" changes the meaning. Both facts are true. A rough English equivalent of what Kennedy said was "I am a New Yorker," whereas the phrase the pedantic jack offs claim he should have said translates to "I am from New York."

No. This is bullshit. Total bullshit.

A more precise analogy would be Kennedy saying, "I am Danish," as opposed to saying, "I am a Danish."

318 Well her mom started dating before the ink was even dry on the divorce.. and it did not go over well at all. I had pretty much decided not to date at all until she turned 18 as a result, and while I might reconsider that I won't do anything that is going to make matters worse for my daughter. I just can't.

Posted by: StuckOnStupid at March 19, 2012 11:28 PM (R5yLq)

Why not just ask your daughter what she thinks? Obviously, there appears to be some mutual interest between you and Hummingbird (she sounds hot, by the way). Have a straight conversation with your daughter about your interest in this lady and that you don't want it to be an issue with your daughter.

The worst she can do is say no, and you're not any worse off. She may actually appreciate the fact that you are committed enough to your relationship with her that your want to give her an opportunity to voice her opinion.

Obviously, there are limits to where this can go. It's not like you should be giving automatic veto rights to your daughter over your life. But this may be a case where allowing her a voice gives her the freedom to say "go for it."

Just a thought. Worth the pixels it's printed on.

Nope. Grew up in the heartland - but not Minnesota. But I grew up on Fran Tarkenton and the Vikings - probably because it was my dad's team too.

Well, the Vikings and anyone playing against Dallas that weekend. Not sure why, he never did tell me, but he always hated the Cowboys with a passion.

323 I agree that this move was really all about getting rid of Tebow in a way that wouldn't piss off all his fans.

The thing is, it doesn't look like it's working. My Colorado friends who are commenting on this all seem pretty upset. Elway was just way to obvious in his dislike during the season and now is going to have a really hard time selling that this isn't personal.

326 I've collected the latest SoS comments from the other thread while I was reading them for myself:

42 Ok, update should be pretty quick tonight.

I arrived to work this morning driving Frakencar, my new nickname for the beater. I pull into the parking lot, and even though there were several spots closer to the building this morning I parked in the same spot it was in when it got vandalized the last time.

I'm just getting out of the car when a security guard pulls up next to me in a little chevy with a lightbar on top of it, the lights are going. He rolls down his window and gives me a suspicious look.

"Pardon me sir", he says, "Do you work here?

I realized he obviously pegged me as a suspicious looking character thanks to the fact that I was driving such a total piece of crap - the body is red, the doors, hood and trunk are brown - -well, it just looks ridiculous. Of course the only reason the guy is even out here patrolling the parking lot is because the car got vandalized in the first place. I damn near laugh myself silly from the irony.

So I tell him I do work here and show him my security badge. I'm still laughing as I'm walking through the front doors.

My morning begins, I start working a few cases and then I see Wolverine pass by carrying a couple of cardboard boxes. He has the biggest shit eating grin on his face imaginable. He stops by one of the che-bot's cubes, and starts emptying it out and putting everything into a box. A few minutes later and he's doing the same to a second cube, another one of the che-bots.

He stops by my desk on his way out, still grinning from ear to ear.

"Thought Monday was your day off." I said, grinning.

"Nope, not anymore. They gave me a promotion, and I got a schedule change. Working Monday through Friday now, same hours as you."

So we chat for a bit, turns out both the che-bots got fired for sending death threats. With his new schedule Wolverine now goes to lunch at the same time I do, so we make arrangements to meet for lunch in the cafeteria. I was brown bagging it but I had to buy him lunch to celebrate the promotion, so I let him know that I was buying and we'd celebrate.

So the morning goes on without further interruption. Wolverine and I meet for lunch, and of course we get more than a few stares since I'm eating lunch with security on hand. Wolverine has to leave a few minutes early, so he gets up and crosses the cafeteria, Che-boy gets out of his chair to leave and passes by Wolverine, they exchange a few words. They were too far away for me to over hear.

So I head back to my desk, my supervisor and I get a chance to chat a bit and she also confirms that both che-bots were fired for sending the death threats. Seems they actually sent them from terminals at work, so it was a lot easier for IT to prove they were involved. As soon as the paperwork got forwarded to HR, both were terminated immediately.

So I finish work, Wolverine is waiting for me at the security desk, and I ask him what was said in the cafeteria with che-boy.

I guess che-boy is beginning to realize his time is numbered, and it's making him bolder. He stopped Wolverine, and in what Wolverine described as a very whiny and irritating tone of voice asked him, "What, are you here to protect him while he eats lunch?"

Wolverine turned to che-boy and replied, "Sir, I'm afraid your mistaken. I'm not here to protect him from you. I'm here to protect you from him."

I laughed so hard I damn near fell down. So Wolverine and I headed out to the car, and I headed home.

60 "SOS, you just about cleared out all the staff. How many scalps, 6?"

Lol.. well, I haven't been making scratch marks to keep track.. but lets see. The HR Director, Twilight Fan, the night supervisor and 2 che-bots. So 5 I think, unless I'm missing someone. Been a hell of a ride the last couple of weeks.. lol.

Posted by: StuckOnStupid at March 19, 2012 07:58 PM

"Che-boy is still employed?!"

At the moment, yes -- he's got a couple of his bot's left too, but I get the impression he's pretty much done confronting me directly at least.

It's possible he may not have sent any of the death threats himself, or it's possible that he did but was smart enough not to do it from a terminal at work so it's just taking longer to get the proof necessary to fire him.

I must admit though I kind of hope he keeps his job for just a little bit longer at least. I mean I know it's probably wrong to be enjoying this, but I must admit I do rather like watching him squirm, waiting for the other shoe to drop -- lol.

93 "Did Twilight Fan quit? Just never come back? I don't think I ever saw the update for her..."

After my last encounter with her in the lunchroom she didn't call and didn't show up two days in a row, so technically she was fired, but really she quit. She just didn't bother to call them and tell them she quit.

Ya, that really showed em.. lol

123 "Stuck, maybe you don't want to get too cute with the "Che" pix. Better Breitbart or even a wolverine."

Ya, I love the Breitbart idea. That would be entirely too cool, I'm guessing I'll have to do stickers of some sort though, that would probably be to involved for a stencil/paint.

That's ok though, I'll ask body guy, I'm sure he knows some folks that can whip something up for me.. and as far as I'm concerned, price will be no object.. lol

Posted by: StuckOnStupid at March 19, 2012 08:25 PM

130 "Hekyl and Jekyl make 7 ... not fired, but doing time."

Well there's almost no chance either of them will do anymore time than the few hours they spent in jail before getting bailed out.

It's almost certain they will plea this out and get probation. Oh, almost forgot, I did call the police today on the second wave of vandalism -- they said they had some leads that they would be "pursuing".

Funny, it sounded a lot like "fuck off" -- may have just been a bad connection.. lol.

"Obviously, there are limits to where this can go. It's not like you should be giving automatic veto rights to your daughter over your life. But this may be a case where allowing her a voice gives her the freedom to say "go for it." "

Well a lot is going to depend on her reaction. When her mom started dating so soon after the divorce I think she really felt betrayed, maybe she thought that the reason we got divorced was because her mom wanted to start dating this other guy.. who knows.

I've explained to her a few times that her mom and I got divorced for a lot of reasons, none of which were that simple. Might also just be the guy her mom is dating too - she hates him with a passion.

But a little time has passed and she knows I haven't dated since the divorce, so we'll talk about it and see what happens, take it from there.

337 Yeah, Polli, I can totally sympathize with them. I'm a Tebow fan, too.

For a team with no offensive line or receivers to speak of, Tebow is ideal. A big guy who can run the ball in a pinch, and is great at inspiring his teammates to do better... he's perfect for the Broncos in their current state.

As long as the defense can keep it close, he'll find a way to win. This inspires the defense to dig a little deeper and pull off the big stops to keep it close so Tebow can win it in the end.

I'm afraid that Manning will end up being a slightly better but even more fragile Kyle Orton as it stands right now.

Couple that with the firing of the coach a few years ago, the tolerance for Jay Cutler's seriously bad behavior for way too long, not to mention the propensity for their players to be in the "wrong place" at the "wrong time" and I'd say the Broncos karma is screwed for the long haul.

Ok well according to most information out there his neck is fully healed, and is not an issue anymore than the neck would be for any other player out there. The surgeries were succesful.

The actual concern since probably December has been his throwing arm. He had suffered nerve deterioration in it because of the neck injury so he did not have the same throwing power in his passing. There were concerns that it was not coming back fast enough for him to be effective this year. Most indications now are that the rehab on his arm has been going quite well and he should be pretty close to his old self by the start of the season.

353 I am not Catholic but please correct me if i am wrong...I was under the impression that if you were going to take communion at a catholic high mass that you have to go to confession and do a pennance for whatever sins, so that you can be in a state of grace in order to receive the holy communion, since it does that transmutation thing (turns into the actual body and blood of Christ)

Could someone lay some 411 on me?

Closest i ever got to this, was when i was very ill a friend of mine who was a lesbian actually went to Confession in order to go to mass and recieve communion. She flat out told me this REALLY proved she loved me because that first confession in ten years wasnt pretty and neither was the shitload of whatever she had to say, before she could be free to go to mass (i guess she had one said for my recovery) but that she thought it was worth it, because they had expected me to die (as you can see i didnt)

This story stuck with me. That woman in the artical stirring up shit is an idiot. When EVEN I KNOW you gotta be in a state of grace and confessed and all kinds of things that are Catholic, before you can take the wafer and drink the wine.

Also it appear you dont use holy water during lent. This is the extent of my knowledge of such things but there you go. I learned how not to embearass myself in a Catholic church.

Oh she knows, her mom was not at all shy about the fact.

"It's also likely that mom tried to force the new boyfriend into everyone's life really quickly, which makes it seem like she's replacing you.

359 Um, Ok. My divorced friends with kids that dated didn't "share" their
personal adult business with their kids. they got on with their lives.
And nobody's new significant other got mentioned to the kids, let alone
got introduced, unless it looked long term.

First, it depends on how old the kids are and how long had the parents been divorced. My dad remarried when I was in second or third grade, so my Stepmother has been in my life for damn near twenty years. This is different than my mom's decision to date when I was a freshman in high school and was a little more aware of what was going on. Second, my advice was that he let her know he was seeing someone, but not to try and force and introduction between the two until the daughter wanted it. SoS made it clear that his daughter had an issue with mom dating suddenly after the divorce, and was concerned about how she'd react to him dating. My advice was in response to that.

Granted my kid was a little older, but she was complicit in setting me
up with Grim and helped wargame the strategy for the friend who got us
in the same place, for how to best get us to accept each other. (since
both of us were suffering from spectacular broken hearts and have a
miserable time trying to find dates we didnt just HATE.)So... sometimes
the kid is glad youre getting your groove back.

I'm not saying that it never works. Hell, SoS's daughter may demand to meet this woman right away. My advice was that he make it clear that he doesn't expect his daughter to somehow immediately embrace whoever he's dating, and that he won't try to force the issue.

So started reading The Stand last night, and I'm almost done with the first third of it. Anyone here ever read it?
Stephen King seems to write with no plan in mind. Just keep adding characters, make the next scene another character, go from scene to scene, inching everyone's "plotlines" forward. . . Finally he'll have enough characters where at any point in the story, there will be an available character to do ALL of the ideas he thinks of. Someone should say this. Someone should have that problem. Someone should dramatically die here. He has enough characters thrown in to do whatever, so there's no need to plan ahead.
He writes like I did in Jr. High school. Part of me likes that.

I was taught that you were supposed to go to confession regularly if you were to receive communion.

In fact, I haven't received communion in about four years now, because I haven't taken the appropriate steps. I have too much respect for the Church to try and sneak around the rules.

366 Is the story about Malia Obama in Mexico legitimate news? Is it a story about Malia Obama or is it a story about how much of our fucking money the Obama household wastes playing the Sun King and Marie Antoinette?

I don't care what Malia does for vacation. She's a kid and should do what kids do. But I do care what my money does on her vacation.

I suppose that some day, I'll be told that I never took a vacation on my own, either. After all, I needed a passport and I benefited from immigration and customs services (that's why I don't smoke Cubans, I guess. Thank goodness they do that for me!) So to complain about them spending our money is being hypocritical... Sorry I brought it up.

370 I am back.. couldnt sleep.

ugh.

I am Catholic. You cant take communion unless you are Catholic and you are can not be a state of mortal sin.
Venial sins are forgiven during the mass.
The Priest who denied her was doing so out of love. Taking the body of Christ while in the state of mortal sin is wrong.
Of course, Priests have no idea who is in that state so denying communion never happens.
But this woman right before mass introduced the Priest to her live in gay lover. She told him all about it.
he told her not to present herself for communion and she did anyway.
It was all a set up so she could go running and screaming how awful Catholic Priests are.

371 The thing that annoys me about Stephen King (his writing, that is; we all know his politics are shit) is that he'll introduce a character, spend twenty pages telling you all sorts of details about his life... then three pages later, he's dead.

I didn't need to know that Mortimer Sump was molested by his uncle at the age of six when he's just there to show us how the monster works, Steve.

It's every bit as annoying as Anne Rice spending four pages describing a flower, then six pages describing the vase that holds it, then five pages describing the table the vase sits on, then eight pages describing the carpet under the table...

Posted by: Genetic Tunder at March 20, 2012 12:25 AM (ig4FA)

372 Last time I went to a Catholic service was for a wedding. The priest said something like, "you're invited to take communion with us if you're a Catholic or a member of an orthodox church, otherwise we ask that you respect our beliefs and refrain from communion."

Seems simple enough. If someone can't do that they're just stirring up trouble.

373 My advice was in response to that.

That wasn't my point. My point is adults should be adults, not buddies. My parents, and those of my friends, were all about "we're the adults, it's none of your business". I do not get people treating their children like they are their buddies. My parents always maintained a line, even though I'm now an adult.

375 Jay Bee,

The problem is that the Obamas treat the Presidency like some kind of lottery win, or a big promotion. They think it entitles them to live a life of luxury. In fact, the WH and everything provided is provided because the President of the United States needs to present a certain appearance, but it should be kept to official business as much as possible. The Presidency is a sacrifice for the whole first family, and the Obama's don't understand that.

382 324 OK, Lego Death Star advice, unless they have changed the packaging in the last couple of years (which they could have) be prepared for the fact that it isn't neatly organized in packages that you build in order. Instead you have to dump and sort every last bloody piece of that monster before you can build it. I bought some boxes that are usually used to sort nails and stuff and we sorted all the pieces into them and then devoted the floor of the dining room to the project of building the Death Star. My son sat in the middle, with the boxes all around him to build it. It took a while because it is extremely critical that you get every single step exactly right or there will be a catastrophic failure.

You are supposed to be in a state of grace when you go to communion. That means, if you have been doing mortal sins, it's a no no. Most priests have no idea what sins you've been committing so they don't refuse communion.

Also, you have to be a Catholic. Holy Eucharist is a sacrament. If you aren't a Catholic, you don't believe in it as a sacrament, and therefore would not participate in it.This woman had stated in writing that she is a Buddhist.

Couple that with the firing of the coach a few years ago, the tolerance for Jay Cutler's seriously bad behavior for way too long, not to mention the propensity for their players to be in the "wrong place" at the "wrong time" and I'd say the Broncos karma is screwed for the long haul.

410 Some leftist scum apparently attack Ann Althouse. She has video. She and her (husband? guy?) Meade have been keeping tabs on the Obama-scum in Madison, often filming the occutards and their protests. Lately she's posted several videos where they harrass her. She's one of the only right-wing bloggers in Madison and the Obama-scum know what she looks like.

The harrassment videos are creepy because they keep asking her where her man is and what would she do if somebody attacked her. These are at crowded public rallies. The lefty scum won't say their names, but they know hers since Althouse is a prominent law prof.

In this case they apparently tried to grab her camera and then punched her. When she called for police the attacker just laughed at her. A cop was there but apparently he warned her son, not the leftist attackers.

I haven't watched the videos yet cause it's late and I know it'll make my blood boil.

Althouse is a 60 year old woman. the harassment videos she posted showed 20 and 30-somethings darkly warning her about possible attacks, calling her by name, mocking her. The point is to make her fear for her safety and not report on the occupy Obama scum.

I hate these motherfucking Obama leftists.

412 If you want to partake of Communion without having to follow Catholic doctrine, Lutherans invite guests to take Communion.

One time at the Lutheran church I've attended occasionally, there was a woman there who refused Communion. The pastor tried (quietly) to change her mind, but ultimately backed off when she refused to budge. I'm guessing she was attaching a Catholic level of importance to it.

I'm not denigrating the Catholic way in this; Communion is an awesome thing, and it's a perfectly valid choice to restrict it to full members of the community. But I do appreciate being included in it as a guest by Lutherans.

431 Pointless pedantic observation: Being a Buddhist wouldn't necessarily exclude someone from being a Christian, and I'm not really sure you'd get more than spirited debates over it from Catholic priests.

There's nothing in Buddhism that says you can't believe in Jesus, the Bible, the catechism, or in John 3:16.

The discrepancy comes with the origin of suffering, which in Christianity comes from The Fall, but Buddhism simply describes as "attachment to permanent things".

That said, she's probably not really a Buddhist EITHER.

You need to find the first edition and read that one instead. The "re-release" is a pile of shit. All that extra crap that was not in the first edition, was on the cutting floor for a very good reason.

It sucked.

I used to love Stephen King. But I pretty much gave him up after Tommyknockers. I forced my way through that book and then apologized to myself for wasting an afternoon and evening.

The original version of The Stand, though, is really good. One of his best. As long as it is, I think it was still tightly written. The characters all worked, and the plot was put together very well.

The only point that was worth questioning was the rather Deus Ex Machina ending to the story. But if you buy into the premise, then it's forgivable.

The Gunslinger series started off really well, but fell off a cliff at the end. Talisman and Ghost House were great reads.

King, I think, is an acquired taste. You'll either get him or not. His earliest stuff is really his best. That was when he listened to his editor. But once he got too big for a lowly editor to tell him something was a piece of shit, that's all (s)he wrote.

If you want quality horror (or any other type of fiction, for that matter), check out Dan Simmons. I only dream of writing a quarter as well as him. And he's really quite wide ranging in his explorations. The Hyperion Cantos is some of the best Science Fiction writing I've ever encountered. Brought tears to my eyes.

And the early stuff by Clive Barker is outstanding. Really out there. Weaveworld is probably my favorite.

There. I've just fulfilled on Monty's now-defunct Sunday Morning Book Thread! Happy Tuesday morning, morons!

There are eucharists that are bleeding and have been for hundreds of years. The blood has not hardened. Its been tested. Has male and female DNA.
One Eucharist has been under glass since like the 1600's. Still as fresh as the day it happened.

My sister in law in in charge of washing the linens at her parish. You cant just throw the blood of Christ in the washer. There are specific ways of cleaning any stains.

I read a lot of the Stephen King books a long time ago. All the details and characters and perambulations tend to come together at the end.
Of the books I read, the best were the ones that didn't have any or much horror. "Misery" and "The Dead Zone". "The Stand" and "The Shining" were good. But "It" kind of turned me off on him. Some of the horror aspects just struck me as overdone and ridiculous.

House Republicans, searching for an election-year message amid a muddled political and economic landscape, will introduce a 2013 budget Tuesday that cuts tax rates and provides for just two individual brackets of 10% and 25%.

The budget would end the Alternative Minimum Tax, which originally was aimed at the wealthy but ensnares a growing number of middle-class taxpayers each year. The plan would nearly eliminate U.S. taxes on American corporations' earnings from overseas operations.

The proposal, to be offered by Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), who has become the Republicans' leading figure on budget issues

I don't know that HBO "hushed up" that Pelosi clip. I was just watching the thing earlier in the evening. Not on HBO, on the internets.

Regardless, HBO sucks. Used to have it up until 2002, then dropped it cause we needed to save money. Got it again for a few months in 2009 and...it sucked! They didn't show shit worth watching. Hardly any good movies and it seemed like a lot of original programming I had no interest in. Did try watching the first episode of Boardwalk Empire but it did nothing for me.

Wound up dropping it again for lack of interest.

485 SoS,

Reincarnation is a Hindu belief. Buddhism--well, I see from other comments here that people regard it as a faith, but it's not, really, in the traditional western sense.

That is to say, it's not really a dogma so much as a path to enlightenment. So, unlike Christianity, you could reject many typical Buddhist beliefs and still be Buddhist. Many of these beliefs are post-Buddha anyway.

Alex mentioned transubstantiation, for example, but Buddhists don't have to be vegetarian. (The ones I have known were not.) I don't think Buddha was, at least not always.

Bigger example: some Buddhists regard Buddha as God or a god. (The Hindus did this to neutralize his impact.) He steadfastly insisted he was not. That doesn't keep Mahayana Buddhists from saying he and all his buddies are gods.

But it's not sophistry. Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism--they're more like the eastern versions of self-help than dogmatic law. Understanding them is supposed to give you rules to live by, not tell you how to believe.

Well I'm not a Catholic, but I've been to more than my share of Catholic masses over the years. My ex-wife is Catholic, and all of our girls were raised Catholic.

I've gone through my share of parishes and priests - one that springs to mind was a parish we used to go to when the girls were all still young. Never really did care for that particular priest - while most of them I've met were great people this guy was just kind of a snot.

Well he had been travelling around to a couple of other parishes on some sort of assignment and we got this really great priest who replaced him.. until like a month and a half later when he came back.

So were at mass that Sunday, we come out after the service and there he is doing the hand shaking thing. We get up there and he says, rather loudly to me, "It's good to see you. I haven't seen you in mass in quite a while." He knew I wasn't Catholic and just could never resist the chance to yank my chain.

So I smiled at him and responded, "Well Father if you'd come to Church more often you might see me here. I've been here every Sunday for months."

My wife didn't speak to me for about a day and a half afterwards.. lol..

I wonder if Disney kids end up getting bum deals where Disney controls everything in their career (agent, manager, producer, etc.), or can have them blackballed for going somewhere else.
Or the other dark Hollywood barely-secret: these kids grow up surrounded by amoral people whosee their person as a commodity with more value than things like justice. . . a casting couch culture brought to children, where seeking justice is futile, career ending and defaming.
It's like the article posted last night, about the North Korean escapee from the labor camp. He thought his mother and brother deserved to be executed for sneaking rice. He thought the tortures and killings were just, because that's what he was taught and was surrounded by. These kid stars grow up in an amoral environment where they're victimized and practically brainwashed. It's no wonder you see unstable lives as the norm.

Well, I'm off to read The Stand some more, then get some z's.

I remember catching an episode of this reality show once with Danny Bonaduche (not sure how that's spelled, hopefully it's close). He's got these parents on this bus and all these parents have kids they want to be "Stars". So he's driving around Hollywood pointing out where all these famous child stars committed suicide, died of overdoes, etc..

He gets done with his tour and asks these parents, "Are you sure you really want your child to be a hollywood star"

And everyone one of them responds with an enthusiastic yes. I just couldn't help but think there must be a special corner of hell reserved just for these folks.

more often you might see me here. I've been here every Sunday for

My wife didn't speak to me for about a day and a half afterwards.. lol..""

Good thing you never met the gem they got at the church by me. He was a dick, a frigging dick of the highest order.

When I decided to get married I wanted to get married at the church I went to as a kid, but they had no opening on that day. I decided well lets get married in the town I was going to live in. It was 6 months down the road, and the closing on the house was a little earlier. Basically I wasn't going to be living in the town until I got married. I go to the church there and have a meeting with the head cheese. This bastard puts me through the mill with questions, he asked a lot of stuff, stuff he didn't need to know.

He breaks out the fucking calculator, tells me how much I should give every week, and then finishes with this speech. I'll never forget what he said. He says "I want to see you here starting this sunday, and every week after".

I interupted him and said I won't be in this town until I'm married. He repeats himself in a louder tone. "I want to see you here starting this sunday, and every week after, and if I don;t feel you are making an effort to become part of this parish, on your wedding day I don't care what arrangements you have, and how many people are coming, and how much money you got tied up, but I will NOT marry you."

I stood up and told the future wife, "please stand up, and lets leave now, before I send satan a new fuck toy"

What a prick he was. I ended up begging the church I made my communion and confirmation in to marry me on that day. They felt bad for me after I explained what happened and set aside a time slot.

I was thinking those looked like nice home-defense guns, but looking into it further, the small shotgun shells aren't very useful and the actual bullets can be pushed more accurately and effectively with something more accurate and less clumsy.

I think he just likes dual use type stuff. He has a 1911 with a .22 conversion kit for example. Also a revolver with both .22 LR and .22 Mag cylinders.

I've fired The Judge, and it is reasonably accurate over 10 yards or so. It's not real bad on recoil and my mom isn't going to go out practicing. She hasn't fired a gun in over 20 years I bet.

623 Kennedys' quote in German is perfectly okay. What immediately conjures up the second meaning is his accent. When a native German says "I am a Berliner", nobody thinks twice about it, they are from Berlin, however, when an American says it, who obviously isn't German, then the second meaning springs to mind right away. Voila´, "I am a jelly-filled donut".

Posted by: Berserker at March 20, 2012 03:53 AM (FMbng)

637 Speaking of denigration, there are a couple of key moments in the process of seduction that stand out as revelations. One is when the female -- after repeated protestations of "I'm not that kind of girl" and "whatever are you doing?" -- lifts her butt so you can get the panties off. All the pretenses and games get bundled up into a pile and set afire at that moment. She wants it.

The other is almost a mirror image. I was joking around with a friend, and it got the nickname: "the presentation of the schlong". There is no moment more fraught with peril than exposure.

And the yin-yang is so amusing. She's been saying, "no, no, no" when she means "yes". He's been saying, "I'm sure, I'm confident" when he means "I hope this works". She knows, "it's in the bag"; he fears, "if it's going to blow up, now's the time".

My (female) friend didn't credit the moment with the boldness I've felt passing it, but did allow that she'd seen a variety of styles to mark the occasion. The one that most impressed me was a guy who sang a song a capella while doing a striptease. Hat's off to 'im!

Would you settle for a paper on why Jonathan Coulton and Capt. Valor believe you should acquire Portal sooner than later?

Also, you should be able to get the first Portal as part of the Orange Box at retail, which also give you a bunch of Half-Life goodness. Available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, thought the PS3 version was bungled and inferior. The Xbox version can found most places for $19.99 or less.

This is hilarious. The lefty green eugenecist suggests, apparently, that people should get three options for having children. Three carbon light small ones, two normal sized ones or one "really big" one if you want to raise a basketball star.

It doesn't mean much when NPCs die. The more detailed the character the more likely to elicit an emotion when something happens to that character.

Actually, millions of people bought Windows 3.0, especially if you include 3.1 and 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups aka The beginning of the end for Novell) . The was the first version that mattered to anyone outside the industry. Before then, you typically got Windows when you bought an app that required it. Digital research's GEM was very similar. There was a popular desktop publishing package called Ventura Publisher that made heavy use of the GEM GUI and APIs, so GEM was part of the package.

The Windows version that marked where nearly all new PCs included was 3.1, which also brought in TrueType as the biggest new feature. Scalable fonts made a really big difference for a lot of visual apps and the Microsoft-Apple collaboration on TrueType broke the Adobe stranglehold.

706 DTV periodically tries to offer us free trial subscriptions of various movie channels, including HBO, to see if they can get us hooked and pay a premium upgrade fee. We tried it when we first got the service (ten years ago already maybe?) and weren't impressed then (canceled it all after the 30-day trial in fact). I doubt I'd be any more impressed now. Glad I'm not paying those jerk offs through my base subscription.

You'd think companies would be smart enough to just tell people what they want to hear and at least act neutral so as to not piss off half of their potential customers but I guess the lefties can't bottle up their hatred for long enough to even fake it.

707 What "Gateway Pundit" says about communion at St John's where the Obamas received communion. In some Episcopal churches you are not to receive until you are confirmed. Not this one

The Obamas did not violate church discipline, because the church in question is so lax about imposing it. The website for St. John Episcopal Church in Lafayette Park states, “St. John’s welcomes all to receive Holy Communion with us.” Even at the denominational level, The Episcopal Church and the Anglican communion historically does not require confirmation to receive the Eucharist, welcoming instead “all baptized Christians.”

Obama did it for a photo op, no doubt,

And on another note, I respect the Priest who didn't give communion to the Buddhist who happened to be gay . The Buddhist part actually bothers me much more than the taking it being in a gay relationship. If you're a Buddhist you're not a RC; Don't make a joke of the Sacrament that way.

708 Speaking as a librul. Maher is a dick. He gets paid to be a dick, like limbaugh.
Im sure many folks on welfare refer to their stipends as Obama bucks. So what?
Would assume many well-heeled white guys in suits who made millions off two unnecessary wars in the ME said often "Thanks for my bush bucks".
But here, this sort of non-story will raise the hackles of all gawd fearing mooslim hating candy assed cowards.

Never subscribed to HBO - never saw a reason too. It didn't seem worth the $$ at the time (I'm cheap), and now seems less thanworthless. In fact, the only thing they have over services like Amazon Prime and Netflicks is their 'original' programing, which is the 'less than worthless' part.
I only wish I subcribed right now so I could tell them to take a hike.

712 Typical, I arrive when this thread is defunct, but it doesn't sound as if any of you fine morons have heard the conclusion of the story of the priest who refused to give the defiant lesbian Communion: the powers above (not God, but Cardinal Wuerl) immediately swung into action and...fired the priest. With a big sloppy apology to the outraged lesbian. http://tinyurl.com/79gmzvb
