Washington Post: Interviews With Key Players, Review of Contemporaneous Emails Makes It Clear That Obama Killed The "Grand Compromise" He Was Supposedly Seeking

They had a deal.

And then.

What happened? Obama and his advisers have cast the collapse of the talks as a Republican failure. Boehner, unable to deliver, stepped away from the deal, simple as that.

But interviews with most of the central players in those talks — some of whom were granted anonymity to speak about the secret negotiations — as well as a review of meeting notes, e-mails and the negotiating proposals that changed hands, offer a more complicated picture of the collapse. Obama, nervous about how to defend the emerging agreement to his own Democratic base, upped the ante in a way that made it more difficult for Boehner — already facing long odds — to sell it to his party. Eventually, the president tried to put the original framework back in play, but by then it was too late. The moment of making history had passed.

More:

A president who promised to bring the country together, who confidently presented himself as the transformational figure able to make that happen, now had his chance.

Ahem. They always forget this -- "A president who had specifically promised he'd achieve an entitlement spending reform by the end of his first term."

Let me remind the Washington Post:

President-elect Barack Obama pledged yesterday to shape a new Social Security and Medicare "bargain" with the American people, saying that the nation's long-term economic recovery cannot be attained unless the government finally gets control over its most costly entitlement programs.

That discussion will begin next month, Obama said, when he convenes a "fiscal responsibility summit" before delivering his first budget to Congress. He said his administration will begin confronting the issues of entitlement reform and long-term budget deficits soon after it jump-starts job growth and the stock market.

I can see how the Washington Post missed that -- after all, it was a Washington Post exclusive, Obama's remarks coming during a 70 minute interview with the Washington Post's reporters and editors.

But I don't read my own blog either, so I understand.

Back to the present article:

But, like earlier policy battles, the debt ceiling negotiations revealed a divided figure, a man who remained aloof from a Congress where he once served and that he now needed. He was caught between his own aspirations for historical significance and his inherent political caution. And he was unable to bridge a political divide that had only grown wider since he took office with a promise to change the ways of Washington, underscoring the gulf between the way he campaigned and the way he had governed.

In the end, that brief effort, described by White House officials as the most intense and consequential of Obama’s presidency, not only illuminated pitfalls in the road he had taken during the previous three years but also directed him down a different, harder-edged, more overtly partisan path that is now defining his reelection campaign.

Well that's the thing. When you can't run on achievements, you have to run on bile.

24 Sorry fellas, politics is an ugly business. Obama realizes that he is riding the hot hand now. The GOP got their dicks knocked in the dirt with how they handled the extension of the payroll tax holiday. 54 I imagine the White House is in full meltdown over this story today. Not only does it expose Obama as a SCOAMF, it blows the hell out of his entire campaign against the "do-nothing Congress" and backs up what Boehner said at the time, namely that there was an agreement but then Obama moved the goalposts.

Let's face it, the guy is an incompetent ass. He contracted out his first two yearsof governing to Pelosi and Reid, and for the next two he has done nothing but posture and preen now that he has lost the House and the veto-proof majority in the Senate. He has no fucking idea how to negotiate anything with anyone, because nothing in his life has prepared him to do anything like it. He folded like a lawn chair when Pelosi yelled at him over agreeing to any changes in Medicare. He would not stand up to her or the other hyperpartisans like Schumer who cared only about campaign strategy and talking points instead of actually keeping America from going over the cliff.

I wonder if it has occured to any of these dickheads that Obama would probably have anapproval rating at 60% or better if he had made that deal, and be coasting to reelection.

a divided figure, a man who remained aloof from a Congress where he
once served and that he now needed..."

Horse. Hockey. Obama was "aloof" his entire career as senator. Ever heard the phrase "Present"? Furthermore, Obama had progressive fruitbat Pelosi in the House to do all the work for Obama so he could goof around while making chicks (and David Corn, BIRM) faint. Obama brought the partisanship with him while outsourcing the actual duties of the office to ideological colleagues. Obama had official "buffers," to borrow from The Godfather, so that he could keep his own hands clean.

As to the disability to bridge divides, Obama never, never, intended to do that. It was an intentional ability to retain the disability. He was to be the rhetorical frontman for the army of actual, self-defined Progressives nudging in socialism/fascism, only they were so successful that much of America said, "WTF?"

Obama is exactly who we thought he was... only worse. By design.

When the dust settles on his presidency and history looks back and shakes its head at him, Obama will desperately try to grab on to the straws of the eeeevil recession and world events and rethuglicans as what doomed his presidency from being the glorious Valhalla that he promised. He will never have the guts, wisdom, or self actualization to look in the mirror and admit he screwed over himself. And, ultimately, the American people he swore to serve. Such is the curse of electing despots.

President proclaims March 19 'National Day of Honor' On the ninth anniversary of U.S. forces moving into Iraq, President
Barack Obama has proclaimed today to be "A National Day of Honor."

Here's is the text of the president's proclamation:
http://bit.ly/FQwNu1

“Nine years ago, members of the United States Armed Forces crossed
the sands of the Iraq-Kuwait border and began one of the most
challenging missions our military has ever known. They left the comforts
of home and family, volunteering in service to a cause greater than
themselves. They braved insurgency and sectarian strife, knowing too
well the danger of combat and the cost of conflict. Yet, through the
dust and din and the fog of war, they never lost their resolve.
Demonstrating unshakable fortitude and unwavering commitment to duty,
our men and women in uniform served tour after tour, fighting block by
block to help the Iraqi people seize the chance for a better future. And
on December 18, 2011, their mission came to an end.
Today, we honor their success, their service, and their sacrifice.

And then Daley resigned. Surprise!

Or rather.... Unexpected!!

I know a little of Boehner, and though the sentimental teariness on two occasions makes people mock him, he is a pretty tough guy in many respects. McConnell is a dough boy, looking out for himself and only himself and willing to stab anyone in the back to get what he wants.

But both of them suffer from the idea that they should be trying to negotiate to get to "yes", which is a common idea in business. In politics, Obama is driving to get the whole enchilada that he wants, and any apparent compromise is a lie. That's just the way he is, that's his nature. Everything he negotiates is in bad faith. Every promise he makes has an expiration date. Every promise. He can lie because he is the ONLY President in town, so who else will the Republicans negotiate with? It's not like in business where you can go to another company if you tire of one company's dishonesty or poor quality.

In this way he differs from Clinton, in that thoughClinton was something of a serial liar, he was shrewd enough to not make himself look TOOfoolish in public if he could avoid it, because he knew there would be other battles ahead. He made that mistake a few time, but not often.

But since the media has ALWAYS covered for Obama's serial dishonesty, he expects to be able to lie serially and continuously and get away with it. He counts on the public having political dementia, and not being able to remember exactly what he promised and said. And that's the way it probably was in Illinois and Chicago. Which explains also why both places are going bankrupt.

151 From an email I received today:

This rather brilliantly cuts through all the political doublespeak we get.

Lesson # 1:
US Tax revenue: #2,170,000,000,000
Fed Budget: $3,820,000,000,000
New debt: $1,650,000,000,000
National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
Recent budget cuts: $38,500,000,000

Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it is a household budget:
Annual family income: $21,700
Money the family spent: $38,200
New debt on credit card: $16,500
Outstanding balance on credit card: $142,710
Total budget cuts: $385

Lesson #2: Another way to look at Debt Ceiling:
You come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood...and your home has sewage up to your ceiling.

What do you think you should do?
Raise the ceiling or pump out the crap?

Your choice is coming this November 2012.
My choice is ABO 2012

I don't even know what "compliant unconstitutional herds of followers" means. The Muslim Brotherhood has taken over the Middle East? hmm... want to think about that? De-funding our military?
