Limbaugh's Slut Joke: Politics, Humor, Provocation, & Taste

When David Letterman caught hell for making some crude joke about one of Palin's underraged daughters, he said something that I thought was pretty true. Paraphrased, he said something like, "These are jokes. I can't defend any of them."

What he meant was that most jokes -- certain all jokes at someone's expense -- are inherently three things: unfair, unwarranted, and untrue. Jokes like this are about hyperbole. Jokes conjure up, briefly, an alternate-reality world in which it is posited that absurd facts we know to be false in this world are actually true.

When David Letterman said whatever nasty thing he did about Bristol, or Willow -- I forget who -- of course none of it was actually true. The true facts of anything would not be the joke. The joke is always the departure from the facts.

All the late-night comedians' monlogues follow the same pattern every night: Brief digest of a news item, in one sentence. This digest is more or less true (if incomplete). The next part is the Fake Thing, the Made-Up Thing, the departure from reality. This is false, and, typically, it's mean.

If anyone thought that you weren't joking here -- if it were possible that your joke was interpreted to be a true account of the facts -- you could easily be hit by a defamation lawsuit, and you could very easily lose.

After all, you'd said something untrue and nasty. Without the special category of "joke" surrounding it, it would be libel.

So that's what Letterman said, and while I do not find him funny, I actually, to this day, find him somewhat self-reflective and admirably self-examining about things like this. He's lost his funny, long ago, and now makes mechanical jokes without humor or talent, but when you trap him on something like this he tends to say something reasonably smart.

He's right. You cannot defend any of these. You can't defend them as you could defend a straight statement. The straight statement you intended to be true. You probably think it is true. You probably also think it's fair.

But a joke? If someone asks you to "defend" it, you can't defend it in the same way -- except to the extent you say, "Look, it was just a joke."

In addition, there's a sneaky little cruelty in humor that it's not the fairest and most defensible jokes that are the funniest. Usually it's the nastiest, most indefensible stuff. Not always, of course. Some jokes just cross the line or lose the room.

But most of the time an absolutely safe, inoffensive-to-everyone joke is not going to get laughs.

Most of the time, if someone, somewhere, isn't upset by it -- or we could imagine they would be upset with it, if they heard it -- it's not going to be funny.

It might be cute. It might merit a smile. It might get a grinning nod of approval.

But the biggest laughs usually come, unfortunately, when you're being unfair and a little mean.

That's the nature of it. You can't defend any of these.

Regarding Rush's joke about Sondra Fluke being a slut: This joke didn't work for me and I wouldn't have told it. It's not funny. The emphasis of it really just seems to be finding a way to name-call her in the thin garbings of a "joke."

It's also in the "not worth it" category because you just know that whenever you touch the Holy Trinity of Race, Sex, or Religion your enemies are going to demagogue it to the ends of the earth.

That said, I tell a lot of jokes myself. Most of them are, in some way, unfair. Many of them do not land. Some of them are Not Worth It.

They say in medicine you're not a doctor until you kill your first patient. And you're not a humorist unless you've told not one but dozens of bad jokes that get crickets.

Just because a joke fails to land, or isn't worth it, or isn't much of a joke, you haven't committed a moral outrage. You haven't proven yourself a bad person or a callous person or a hateful person.

You are guilty of exactly what you're guilty of -- of telling a bad joke that doesn't land. And that's it.

It's not a hanging offense. Some jokes don't work. There is no way to tell jokes off the cuff, just riffing right off the foam of your outer brain, without telling a bad joke or going too far or whatever.

Well, there is a way: Don't tell jokes.

And many people don't joke around, especially not when being broadcast, so they never have to worry about that.

But if you are joking around a lot, you're going to do it. Probably pretty frequently.

There are two problems here: The first is the left's typical He Said A Dirty Word faux-outrage. Ridiculous. Grow the hell up, idiots.

You have Bill Maher calling Sarah Palin a "c*nt" (no joke at all, except for the shock value of the word) and no one's getting on him for apologies. And when the right got on him for it, he doubled down, defended it, and did it some more. Plus, snarked at us for being so dumb.

And Rush can't call this girl adult woman a slut?

Grow up. The Never Ending Tantrum act is tedious.

I don't think the right way to defend this is to insist it's right or noble or proper to call this girl a slut. That just doesn't sound right to me.

I think the proper thing to say is "It's a joke, sometimes they're a little mean, sometimes they don't land, no one really gets hurt."

It's a joke. A bad joke? I think so. But so what? The difference between a good joke and a bad joke is not moral intent or the character of the joke-teller or his status as "enlightened" or a "hater."

The difference between a bad joke and a good joke is not whether it's mean or not.

Most jokes are mean-- including most of the good ones, too.

The difference between a good joke and a bad joke is merely something with no moral or character component at all -- craft. Whether you figured out the exact right way to frame the gag for maximum humor and maximum defensibility.

That's not a moral or a character issue. That's just an issue of joke construction and editing.

People make fun of the infamous opening, "It was a dark and stormy night," for being melodramatic and cliched. (Why? That has always struck me as a rather good opening sentence.)

But that sentence is never faulted for being immoral, or hateful, or displaying a low character.

The fault in that sentence (again, I sort of don't see the problem myself) is simply an intellectual sort of problem, of craft and composition and few other things which are entirely removed from considerations of morality or character altogether.

"Polishing" and "punching up" a sentence or gag are not questions of the heart. They are questions of craft, only, with no moral implications whatsoever.

I didn't like Rush Limbaugh's joke. So what? What we could say is that "He didn't spend enough time polishing that joke and getting it ready for the public." Fine, he should have spent some time working the joke.

But that doesn't mean he's a bad guy.

Here's the thing: I don't see how yet, but I know this to be true.

I know, if I think about it, and bother trying, I can write a series of jokes -- maybe a fake essay written by Sandra Fluke -- which will be far, far worse than merely calling her a "slut," and it will actually be funny.

So the problem is not calling her a slut. It can be done. I don't know how yet, but I know if I set to mind to it I will call her the most acrobatic, schwanz-slinging gutterslut the world has ever known and it will be funny.

And it will be funnier precisely because it is so terribly unfair and nasty.

Yes, cruelty is an inherent component of humor. A lot of people who don't sling jokes don't know this, or won't accept it, but anyone who spends a lot of time writing jokes knows that cruelty is, unfortunately, a basic widget in the humor toolbox.

The question is not about morality or character. It's about how many hours I'm willing to put into this to make the joke work.

Could I "defend" it? No, as Letterman said, you can't "defend" any of these things.

You can only say what comedians say when they've hurt someone: Look, I'm sorry, these are just jokes.

The Unstated Assumption That The Liberals Press and That Rush Won't Concede.

Some people you're "allowed" to be nasty about -- Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, etc.

You don't have to be a genius to figure out that if someone is on the right, the liberal media considers them fair game for nasty jokes.

Including Craig Kilborne's "Snipers Wanted" joke about Bush.

But certainly people don't usually make fun of heroes. I could, I guess, sling jokes at Lance Armstrong and his cancer, but most people would say: Uh, I don't get it. What are you trying to say? What's Lance Armstrong done to deserve this?

And this the thing: The left is conferring "hero" status on Sondra Fluke, and that means, like Lance Armstrong, she is just too much the Moral Wonder to joke about.

Barack Obama was similarly decreed off-limits by leftist comedians. In that case, they were saying "He's such a hero, I just can't think of any jokes I can tell about him."

What Rush is doing here -- which I do support -- is denying this assumption.

She's not a hero, nor does she get the special protective bubble of a hero.

I can think of funny things about her. She's kind of fat and her face looks like an unappealing shoe I wouldn't want to wear, for example.

But no, I don't concede she's Off-Limits, and neither should Rush.

She's not a hero. She's just a Chubster looking for some camera time. She also makes things up left and right. She's a bit of distaff Baron Munchausen.

As you can see, I really haven't spent much time myself thinking of the right jokes to tell about her.

But yes, when the right ones are thought of, damnit, they're going to get told, and repeated, and passed around.

It seems to me that that categorization is probably to deferential to political correctness, and that's overly constricting even if its adherents tried to be consistent and sincere about its application.

Anyway, I think the point of Rush's remark is worth reiterating. It is outrageous to a woman that, but it's worse for that woman to testify before Congress about how her sex life needs to be subsidized even though contraception is ubiquitous and often very inexpensive.

37 This is sort of the Jon Stewart "clown nose on/ clown nose off" defense.

Limbaugh always says he's an entertainer and uses humor in his show, he's also built his reputation and success as being a political thought leader.

Unlike Letterman, Limbaugh isn't doing a strictly comedy show (well, neither has Letterman in the last 20 years but that's a different story), he's doing politics and he knows and banks on, his words impacting the political world.

There's nothing wrong with doing entertainment and drawing the largest audience so you can charge confiscatory ad rates as Rush puts it but let's not pretend his interests and the interests of the Republicans actually running for office are always the same.

It's absolutely disgraceful. Her parents should be ashamed they raised such a piss-poor excuse of a "woman". She's an embarrassment to anyone with ovaries.

So again it's a statement. Only half-true though. Calling her a slut would insinuate she actually gets some. She is so hideous in so many ways that I'm suspect of her ability to find male companionship. And I wasn't even speaking to her looks, but sure, we could go there as well.

When liberals joke about conservatives - they mean it. Liberals want the "joke", or the false reality, to be construed as truth, so that the audience is left with an impression that ultimately leads themwith a negative impression of the "other".When liberals joke about other liberals, there is alwaysa soft landing. Have we learned nothing from Andrew Brietbart? Stop peeing your pants over the left getting their panties tied in a knot, because that is when we lose these fights. Not on the substance, but on the fear of potentially being politically incorrect.

Rush Limbaugh's entire monologue on this issue was hilarious and should be celebrated. There is no need to demonstrate that Sandra Fluke is a real slut (doubtful, have you seen her picture?), because she is certainly a foul and rotten minded creature even without being a genuine slut.

79 This is one of those things you just have to get about how Rush does things.

This is demonstrating absurdity by being absurd. He isn't saying "Fluke you ignorant slut" as a way to discredit her argument, such as it is. He took her absurd position and rode it all the way to its logical conclusion. Hey, lady, you want to go and argue that you can't afford law school because noone will subsidize your screwing around, that's just absurd, so let's just see how absurd. The screaming and hyperventilating proves that he stuck the pig.

This argument is NOT about whether Fluke can screw around or not. I don't care, and I would bet a zillion dollars that she doesn't actually need birth control. She's an activist and she is activating. And Rush is, too. It's not a "joke" per se.

Punch back twice as hard. And while we all sit around and say, man, Breitbart, he's the man, if we simultaneously act like a whiny bitch because Limbaugh said "slut" then obviously we never got Breitbart.

101 The hyperbole of Rush has magnified the fact that an activist (would we know that now if not for Rush's spotlight?) just testified in front of congress and said with a straight face that a law should be passed that trumps freedom of religion so she can have sex, using pills free of charge, paid for by either the Catholic Church against their religious values as interpreted from the Bible for 2000 years or paid for by a private insurance company under Presidential fiat against the United States Constitution. The joke is the fact that freedom of religion and the US Constitution is being replaced with free contraception paid for by others and Ace has focused like a laser on the messenger instead. I was jokingly gonna ask Sandra Fluke to guest editor as a mock apology but she must already have the job.

103 I think someone added up the cost of condoms and compared it to the amount of money she claims to spend on birth control. It worked out to be 3 condoms per day for an entire year. Even if you're generous and drop that down to 2 condoms per day for an entire year that's still pretty slutty.

So they held a "hearing" which had no purpose other than to give this committed feminist activist a platform so she could pretend to be a young, porr college student who is being oppressed by these evil Catholic men.

I don't see why this is not just desserts for Fluke to get whatever cabbages and rotten tomatoes our side can throw at her. I really don;t give a shit about the MFM's sensibilities and I don't care who is going to win the next news cycle as a result. That's why you see so many lesbians in the pro-abortion movement. They're all convinced that there are thousands of horny guys out there waiting to rape them and force them to have babies.

She wants help from the school in the form of free stuff so that she can continue to fuck 3 times a day, every day, for the whole time she's at Georgetown. She just asked/demanded that the school give her a subsidy not to help her fuck, but to completely pay for all her fucking!

So this is what strikes me about all this. .....The Institution Left has now screwed themselves with their new rhetoric to justify forcing us to pay for birth control and abortion.

187 >>> I thought the asking for video, since we are paying for it, was pretty funny.

yeah that works better. I don't think it's all that funny but it is a complete joke.

The problem with the other one, technically, is that it's too strained a connection between premise (she wants subsidies for birth control) to punchline (prostitute).

But that's a technical thing. if you sat there for a while I imagine you could doctor it up so it works, so it's not so strained.

Right now it's so strained that it just looks like he wants to call her a slut.

And there's not really a problem with that, except it's a very, very weak joke (I didn't defend Maher's pointless "c*nt*" comment, so I can't defend this pointless one either) and it continues to demonstrate that the right really does think that if you have more than one sexual partner, AND you're a woman, you're a whore.

Meanwhile, a lot of people on the right don't actually seem to believe this In the way they live their actual lives, so we have a whole hypocrisy thing going on, which isn't even fake or contrived hypocrisy, it's genuine, real, mockable hypocrisy.

I think as investors in this woman's actions, we should have a right to see if we are making something people are willing to pay for. Then we should sell it. If no one buys it, we should stop paying her.

Another thing, we have a new condom law. She must use only a condom in these movies. (Why would we pay for anything else then. That should be enough.)

I get your "It was a joke" argument. This was a hot topic, a tense debate, and Rush threw a groaner of predictable subject and flat unimaginative delivery, that played into every stereotype the left has about the rights feelings on sexuality.

I guess my thing is. He's a pro making $X7. He wasn't wrong to make a joke he was wrong to make a bad joke. 232 Excellent post, Ace.

Jokes are mean and nasty. We like them when done against people and groups we hate. We hate them when done against people and groups we like.

We hate them so much most people honestly don't find jokes against people the like funny.

Like everything human-related, a lot of jokes is about signalling and status. Mocking a person is lowering them in status. The crowd cheers when the comic lowers the status of people the crowd wishes had a lower status.

The crowd gets angry when a joke undermines the status of a person the crowd wants to have high status.

Jokes are mean because the purpose is to lower the status of the person being joked about.

Making Catholics pay for them, and for abortions, is a HUUUUGE deal to them. They care a shitload more about this than they do about same-sex marriage. Motherhood equals oppression to them; pregnancy is slavery. Yes, I have actually heard a woman say those words. And I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts Sandra Fluke has said them. 254 I listen to Rush everyday so I know the whole context. I will say I have never heard Rush calling himself an entainer, only others doing so. I think this falls under Rush's category of illustrating absurdity by being absurd; it wasn't meant to be a joke. In fact he said as much today.

His point was this. What do you call someone who you are paying to have sex [with others]? His answer was a slut, and then he corrected that by saying, actually, a prostitute. And we who are paying for her act are the pimps. And maybe we need to ask for compensation for paying for her activities - a sex tape perhaps? And he also mentioned that we aren't paying for wine or body oil, just the contraceptives.

The point was that maybe Ms. Fluke shouldn't be asking people to pay for her sex life, and he explained this explicitly. The illustration was dirty but effective, I believe, to those actually following it.

Now, at the end of today's show, he did make a joke (an unnecessar one IMO.)

Perhaps we should actually try to find out what happened instead of relying on the media's narrative. We all know how honest and accurate they are.

So now we're worried about too much of Rush's rhetoric offending the ignorant voting public. We're worried about nominating staunch conservatives because they'll offend the ignorant voting public with the prime example being the Goldwater nomination. Well, what about giving some credence to the notion that the public can learn about past mistakes? After all, you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Do people learn from being duped in the past or not? Didn't Johnson escalate the war in Vietnam? Aren't the people tired of being race baited? Do we really think people want to pay for other people's birth control? Yes, they might want free birth control, but they sure as hell don't want to pay for someone else's - especially when they're not getting any action themselves.
It's a new world, now. The stuff doesn't stick like it used to. Fight the pressure to just take the easy way out. If you can get voters to think for just a second about our point of view no matter how inflammatory it seemed, they just might learn something and we just might add on another sensible voter.

That is pretty much verbatim the broadcasted line that started the Righteous Indignation (tm). It really wasn't even an attempted joke, it was trying to put the situation into context of reality, rather than this made up world of "reproductive rights"

Posted by: Soothsayer at March 02, 2012 03:13 PM (jUytm)
Moot point. Even if a woman takes birth control for non-birth control reasons, payment for it should not be government mandated. Religious instituions shouldn't be forced to pay for it. Hell, citizens shouldn't be forced to pay for other people's medication. It's not an expensive product and the manufacturers usually have a discount program to make it even more affordable. There are also such things as generics, which are a lower cost solution.
If this woman is on the pill, the amount she takes does not corellate to how much sex she is having. If it does, she's doing it wrong. ... Unless she is (or her "friends" are) taking something like Plan B after every encounter.
They do exist, by the way. Women who use bc for non-bc aren't as rare as Bigfoot.

And have no fear, Rush will survive this controversy, and go on. Why? Because the stoopid Leftards that brought the contraception topic up again have had to take their shots at him, and remind everyone why this end run on the First Amendment's religion clause is a bad deal. So Rush is going to have the last laugh on this one, as the Social Cons (and some other religious/spiritual types who didn't feel that way before) come out in droves to affirm their support for the "I'm not Obama" candidate this year.

356 Actually, she doesn't strike me a slut at all. I've dated a couple. Sluts are, in my experience, slutty because they have a higher sex drive than normal and lower self-esteem than normal. They are slutty because they crave male attention much more than normal women. Being alone drives them, literally, crazy. So they do whatever they can to not be alone. And being a slut usually works.

I've also dated uptight, activist intellectual chicks. They tend to have lower than normal sex-drives and are much more likely to have a cooch that barely works -- I'm talking the involuntarily dry and clenched up type of cooch.

Slutty chicks are always ready for sex. Takes very little to get the juices flowing. Activist, intellectual chicks ... oh, man - takes some serious prep work if you don't want to be fucking sand paper.

Sex with uptight intellectual chicks is 1000x more of an effort than slutty chicks. Foreplay with slutty chicks is mainly pointing at your boner and grunting. Plus the occasional round of penicillin.

I do care about the *topic,* obviously. I always hear people say "Bill Maher isn't funny because he's so hateful."

No, Bill Maher isn't funny because he's so untalented.

Hate is actually a very useful thing in comedy and most top comics are loaded with it. If you know comics, they are psychological basket cases, largely, nothing but egotism piled upon envy wrapped around early childhood sexual deformation with a side of repressed antisocial and morbid impulse.

That's why they became funny in the first place! Duh! Super-together people with great childhoods and who were always popular tend not to be all that funny!

So, yeah, I think about this general topic. It interests me. And thinking about it, I can say, a "mean" joke doesn't make you a mean puprose. the whole point of most jokes is to be mean.

This joke was lame, is all. Which is completely separate issue.

The mfm is right on this. The whole post is explaining that all comedy is based on meanness, and so what then if Rush was "mean," but the only acceptable words are "Rush was Right, megatdittoes, long time listener first time caller."

I don't care. Look, some people are really not all that smart. They are crude of thought. Their brains only hold two categories -- Heroes, who are always right in all things, and Villains, who are always wrong in all things (and are sluts).

Sorry if this blog is pitched a little higher than that.

402 Here is the thing. People are talking about this now, and it is actually an important topic.

You might think this is simply a "old white guy calls women who have sex sluts" thing, but it isn't. It's how we get to the point of running a trillion dollar deficit. By making everyone's sad story a reason to cough up more government money.

Except this isn't some sad story. It is a stupid story, And the stupid woman pushing the narrative who was told by Nancy Pelosi how brave and heroic she is is now finding out what she really is.

You don't have to like that Rush approached it the way he did - you don't have to say megadittoes. You don't really have to do anything. But you should acknowledge that Rush got people talking about this, and it is because of how he addressed it that we are all talking about it.

409 Now, on the bigger picture that has been raised (mostly by Drew in the other thread), I strongly disagree that this is a distraction.

While Obama remains unelectable, this fact is not because of his economic cluelessness, but because the economy is the result of his arrogant anti-liberty policies.

As Allen keeps saying, he has the natural instincts of a Tyrant, and this situation (both the trampling on religious liberty AND the obvious pivot to try and pretend it is about Republicans denying access to contraception) is one of many necessary examples of his statist, tyrannical instincts. It is death by 1000 cuts, and they are self inflicted. His nature is that of the scorpion, and he can't help himself.

Tyranny, propaganda, bullying, and incompetence are all part of the fabric that guarantee that he will not be reelected. It isn't just about gas prices or the unemployment numbers. These topics are also appalling examples of his governing style the cause voters to recoil and vote for someone else. They energize us, depress the Dems, and destroy his support among independents.

This election is not just about the economy.

The difference between Rush (and me) and Boehner is that Rush can spend an hour explaining his comments.

I can spend 2000 words writing about them.

Both of us "buy ink from the barrelfull."

We can sit there and talk about this shit and people actually come to hear it/read it.

Boehner is not in that position.

This is what annoys me about Rush-- it's that he doesn't recognize he himself is in the enviable position of buying ink by the barrelfull. He has advantages that others do not.

I can explain why this is all dumb but it takes a while to explain things like "most comedy is predicated on cruelty."

Boehner cannot. Boehner's mission is to move on. He does not want to sit there at a podium and explain comedy to morons in the press who are, in addition to being dumb and biased in the first place, *playing dumb* and pretending that they don't "get it."

Boehner cannot win this. Do you understand? He cannot win this.

But the issue seems to be that many people are defending Rush's joke on the basis that because she's unmarried and on birth control (and having sex) that ipso facto she *is* a slut. I.e. it wasn't a satirical joke but rather a pure statement of fact.

479 But no, I don't concede she's Off-Limits, and neither should Rush.

1. She signed on at a Catholic institution knowing full well what she was getting into, and their position on birth control.
2. She suddenly appeared at 'just' the right opportune moment to try to buttress the Obama administrations war on the Catholic Church, fundamentalist Christians, and some forms of Judaism
3. She made herself available to Congress and gave testimony from which the rest of us would say TMI

Now, what I can absolutely predict is that the left will now create some imagined threat on her life and point their fingers at 'extremist' right wing elements -- when I would bet my left tit that some lefty will see what 'needs to be done here' and provide the ammunition with which we will all be hanged in the court of public opinion. It will be the slimiest, bottom of the deck move in political history. But it's coming.

Ace, I disagree entirely. I know the worst sin right now is to be mean, but if we cannot employ shame to enforce virtue, we are left with the law as the entirety of civil control.
Why should we cede shame to the left? This woman demands the police, ultimately, be used to extract money from the church so she can sleep around without consequence. Several perjoratives could be distilled from those facts, and frankly 'slut' is about the least offensive, except for the double standard it implies with respect to sex and gender relations, a double standard which has done more good than harm in history.

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the statement.I don't know whether she is or isn't a slut or if she is a nymphomaniac or if she limits herself to one sex partner or if she wanders aimlessly by naval vessels on the Potomac. However, it is undeniable that she is poor shopper given that she spends $250 a month for something which costs only $9. She is also a leech and a moocher who is too cheap to spend her nine dollars to get her own birth control but would prefer that you pay for it. Otherwise, unless you fork over your cash, her world as a student at a $43K a year law school would end tragically. No one can make it through law school pregnant.

539 How is calling this girl a slut any different from calling Mohammed a pedophile, which plenty of people on this blog have done? There is a reason to do so, because it attacks the underlying assumptions of Islam about the nature of Mohammed and changes the nature of the debate. Rush is doing the same damn thing.
People are going to be more receptive to the case against forcing businesses to pay for contraception, or any of Obamacare's other little tyrannies, if they associate it with negative behaviors. As long as the Left can use the "women's health" card with impunity, then they will constantly reinforce the idea that paying for contraceptives is on par with, say, mammograms or pap smears.
Ultimately, the problem is that we aren't aggressive enough. Everytime someone challenges one of these liars, the Left throws a tantrum and the delicate little 'independents' run crying to their room and we look like the bad guy because we made everyone angry. This leads to yet another round of recriminations, and more idiots in the Republican leadership deciding that those mean, nasty conservatives have to be shut away from the public. If you fight back, if you challenge the Left in it's assumptions and make people uncomfortable, then eventually they grow a thicker skin, and the Left loses one of it's favorite tactics.

Insofar as this issue relates to the Catholic Church it is an election issue. A huge swath of swing voters are Catholic, who while maybe not complying with Church beliefs, believe that their Church shouldn't have this shoved down their throat; this is a winnable issue that could easily net enough votes to decide the election, if we could agree to argue it from the stance of religious freedom, rather than allowing ourselves to get pulled into the morality of sex argument. Let the Church make arguments about morality if *they* want to, (and trust me, they have much better written arguments than we have) we just stick to defending *their* freedom to hold said convictions and not be compelled to act against them.

551 OT/

I and all of my coworkers just got laid
off at work for the second time in one week. I've been working in IT for
a Govt. contractor and we were told that out contract was cancelled
last Friday, only to find out it was extended on Wednesday and today,
"oops! Nevermind. Please turn in your badges and Laptops on your way
out."

*This post was made using a U.S. Government Issued Computer.*

552 We are falling for the same shit that the two conservative authors on Fox was talking about this morning. The left is ALWAYS on the hard attack mode, while we try to appease to get along.

We have to quit that shit. We on the right should be calling her a slut or a liar or both, and when people like Pelosi bitch about it we should attack the shit out of her.

As for advertisers cancelling Rush, fuck them. Remember the advertising hoopala at Beck. We now know that was orchestrated by Media Matters and they didn't get that many of them.

Posted by: Buzzsaw at March 02, 2012 04:22 PM (tf9Ne)

555 Yeah, I could see her really being a slut. She's not hot, but she's somewhat doable (personality not withstanding). She's the type of girl an average guy sees and thinks "yeah, I might be able to get that".

The first time I saw her pic; easy peazy.

Posted by: Soona at March 02, 2012 04:23 PM (eaQ7w)

556 And I'm not convinced that many commenters even see it as a pure joke. Some seem to be arguing that she's a liar about her birth control and a 'slut' and 'whore', and oh yeah she's must be an actual slut too.

It's OR. She's lying ( no one needs $1000 worth of pure birth control) or she does need it and she's a slut/whore.

It's really easy to understand.

Really easy.

Most are choosing to go with the "slut" meme since 1. It's funny and 2. Insulting to some activist twit.

Really, how stupid is it that anyone thinks their birth control should be paid for? I don't even want to hear about it. It should be completely private.

@351 She's lying, dolt. She's not having sex enough for it to cost 1000 per year. (The pill only costs about $130 per year and there is no additional cost needed per lay.)
Posted by: ace at March 02, 2012 03:43 PM (nj1bB)

Which is WHY it is so important to call her out. She wants people to pay $1000/year for her birth control - we want her to show us why it costs so much.

We already KNOW how much BC costs - she obviously doesn't - so we are letting her know that WE know that she is lying and that she is about to get caught in her own lie.

Either she is basing that number on cost per condom - in which case, somebody is having an AWFUL lot of sex; thus they might be considered a "slut" - or she is paying for some damn expensive BC pills.

OR somebody is taking a "cut" off of that $1000.

The most important thing is that she be called to defend her claims. If the left knows that they are expected to be able to do that every time, they are less likely to try and pull one over on us the next time.

606 tI think the joke is not only not worth it, it's counterproductive - for more than one reason, one being because it arms the "war on women" narrative O is trying to build regarding contraceptives.

Start implying that (exclusive of who is paying for it) that anyone, including married ladies who attend Georgetown, who want their insurance to cover contraceptives, or even just *use* them are not only selfish but WHORES SCRUNTS SLUTS who NEED TO KEEP THEIR LEGS CLOSED and people start to get the idea that are not joking, but that you mean it;

And while you may dearly enjoy a laugh and enjoy ridiculing the sex lives of *anyone* , but including said whores scrunts and sluts who sleep with their husbands while and avoiding pregnancy at the same time, it does paint an image of conservatives that conforms to the worst demagogued stereotypes. It takes the issue out into the weeds, away from more persuasive arguments that don't involve insulting perfectly normal people not just the wrongheaded WHORE SCRUNT AND SLUT who wanted to speak for them in front of congress.

It's harder to make a case for better ways to increase choice, access and personal responsibility - keeping the government interloping in third party private contracts and private benefits packages - when WHORE SCRUNT AND SLUT is the apparent political viewpoint deeply held by republicans. rather than the role of government.

It is a sad commentary that things have gone so far afield that is is risky to ridicule someone like fluke. she is an idiot, a liar, or both. even more, no one, not even liberals want to see daddy's little girl testifying that she has has more cock than colonel sanders. saying she is a bad person for it no, ridiculing her decision to brag about it sure.

considering some things as being off limits is a mistake made long ago and is a cornerstone of the whole pc speech foundation. it may be ugly but it is not wrong. i do not know any women that would decide to go on record to describe their bad behavior. Indeed I do not know any guys that would do it either.

the situation you're describing doesn't exist in the real world. it's the old liberal narrative that available contraception automatically means people will be responsible, two-child married couples and we'll have way less abortions, much like no-fault divorce was supposed to only dissolve the most unhappy marriages. then when things go the opposite way they either go "how could we know???," claim other factors (no doubt masterminded by those nefarious right-wingers,) or talk about how all our modern social pathologies are really A Good Thing, cuz, you know, Freedom.

That this was something people were more inclined to take as a probable statement or, potentially, fact regarding this person?

Isn't that more the problem?

Wouldn't a joke as you conceptualize it need to be something more along the lines of:
"And now, this new Mother Mary rises up for the Democrats; promising an immaculate conception for every house! After all, once you can't have sex without contraception; you know, from the next mandate, God is the only way."

678 Oooh, this poor baby is so incapable of controlling herself that she needs $3000 a year to pay for her birth control. That's a lot of sex, but if she wants to screw every male in the school from the students to the professors to the janitors, that's fine with me. But don't ask me to pay for it. Pay for it yourself, lady (and I use that term advisedly). If you can't pay for an optional activity, don't do it.

And don't tell me you can't control yourself. I'm a woman, and somehow I managed to control myself in college. In fact, I controlled myself so well, I was a virgin when I met the man who eventually became my husband. Incredible, isn't it?

This is a ridiculous controversy. This slut is offended at truth in advertising. Well, what would you call yourself, woman? You want to screw around and demand that everybody else pay for it. Exercise a little self control. Or is that a dirty word?

Posted by: Lee at March 02, 2012 04:48 PM (RtwOA)

679 Let's do the math here. Birth control at $9 - $15/month is $108 to $180 a year. Going with the higher number than leaves $820 for condoms. A case of a thousand condoms at Amazon is $225. $820 will buy you 3.6 cases, or 3600 condoms. At that rate you're going through almost ten condoms a day over the course of a year.Draw your own conclusions.

I think you are underestimating the value of succinctness.

Additionally, I think most women are able to appreciate the reasoning behind using the term in relation to this woman. I think there is a large gap between someone claiming to incur the expenses she does and the behavior that likely requires and normal behavior in America. No one is saying she is bad or wrong for having sex, talking about sex, or having sex before or outside of marriage.

It is also useful, and probably important to brand liars and useful idiots as such.

708 685 Since 2004, soona. I'm old here, like many other things.

I'm sorry to piss anyone off, but I hope it's ok to point out that OBVIOUSLY unecessarily pissing off ordinary people is not the way to win.

It's a joke he made, not the end of the world, but he's not the only one making it and I SINCERELY do not think it is going to help the cause, so to speak.
Posted by: Sarahw at March 02, 2012 04:51 PM (LYwCh)

way too concerned about pissing off people that are going to matter.

years ago, maybe ten, the wsj journal ran an article about women that would only date rich men. one woman was interviewed extensively about how an d why and mentioned that she expects a man to spend a thousand dollars or more on an evening out and multiples of that on a weekend away. anyway, perhaps because I spend a lot of time around numbers sorts, the jokes started flying about the difference between this woman and a hooker, how good she had better be, and the relative merits of her and a hooker. it would not have been nearly as much fun without her listing numbers. Similarly, this would not be nearly as much fun if she had not shot her mealy mouth off about numbers that were either lies of evidence of abnormal behavior. I am sure that more than a few women looked at those numbers and ruined their keyboards as they ran the numbers.

ridicule is good for the community.

I do think moderate/ swing voters might come over to the dark side if they could keep the female insults out when it comes to having sex or using birth control, and the good arguments in about conservatives offering people real control - plans or ways to provide for one's own routine or catastropic care without involving the federal government's boot, nor tethered to an employer. Such as, HSAs, or other tax sheltered account for expenses - or relief from fica and income taxes on money spent to buy insurance. Posted by: JewishOdysseus at March 02, 2012 05:59 PM (hRH92)

744 Ace: the original "dark and stormy night" sentence is derided because it is a mind-numbingly long and run-on sentence. There is a contest held to write a so-bad-it's-funny opening sentence for a novel, and it's named after the guy who wrote that sentence.

http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/

Other than that, it's just a bit of a cliche. Snoopy was shown typing that sentence a lot as a running gag, and I think it qualifies as a pre-Internet meme joke.

So yeah, there's nothing inherently wrong with starting a novel by observing that the night is dark and stormy, but if you use those exact words you are just asking for mockery.

P.S. I gather that in film school, it is quite common for students to start their student film with a shot of a ticking alarm clock. This is so common, that it annoyed FreddieW and Brandon.

http://bit.ly/wGSOvy

So again, nothing wrong in and of itself to start a movie with a ticking alarm clock; but it's been done.

763 The problem with the whole episode is not whether or not Fluke is a slut, or whether Rush should've called her something else or nothing at all. The problem is that the Democrats have tilted their hand so badly -- showing us that they are going to inject the issue of contraception into this race (even though it was of absolutely no consequence to anything the Republicans were doing!) -- and we've stepped right into the trap!

Pelosi wanted to use her insipid, inconsequential presser to declare that Republicans hate women and are backward neanderthals -- and Rush grabbed the ball and ran with it! UGH! Now, anyone with a brain knows this is all theater, but we're giving these dolts all the soundbites and fodder they need to make a non-issue a MAJOR issue straight thru November. Stephanopoulos' asinine question will now seem prophetic. Our guys will be assaulted with this issue for the next 6 months, while Obama the Smooth dances around unscathed, telling us all about how he loves him some women-folk.

782 About the "dark and stormy night" line, it's not made fun of because it's bad. It's made fun of because of how much it was used.

783 779 "Some people you're "allowed" to be nasty about -- Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, etc."

It cuts both ways. Breitbart did quite a dance on Ted Kennedy's grave. I think some of the vitriol poured out on Breitbart is because of his own crass behavior on that occasion.

****

Kennedy was a piece of shit traitor who tried to sell us out to the Soviets for his own gain and, btw, knocked up a chick outside of marriage and managed to drown her. He thoroughly deserved having his grave pissed on by AB and a host of others. So, no, it doesn't cut both ways, in that Breitbart's politically incorrect behavior that so offended you did not have a body count.
