You laugh, but that is the intellectual basis of Marxism: the labor theory of value. Marx held that the value of something is determined by the labor that went into producing it, and used that criterion to generate his theory of exploitation in capitalism.

Yeah, I know, it's ridiculous. You'd have thought Engels or somebody would've said, "But Karl, what if you dig a hole with a teaspoon?" But apparently nobody did.

66 It's ovah.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

72 This isn't any stupider than anyone else that thinks of improving the economy in terms of "job creation." Jobs are created as a by-product of industrious activity that creates value/wealth. The economy improves when there is more value produced.

Now, it takes people working jobs to create this value, sure, but not all work is valuable, so not all jobs improve the economy/create value. Once the goal is "job creation," you've lost sight of the actual goal. This sort of stupidity flows naturally from that point.

101 Mr. O'Donnell.

I understand the confusion, since, strictly speaking, an economy is not a physical process. However, the same rules roughly apply, and nothing is 100% efficient- there is some loss of energy, in this case: money, whenever energy (money) is transferred. This means, under your model, eventually there will be no more money.

The free(ish) enterprise model taken up by your ancestors, however, is novel in that it is not, strictly speaking, a "closed system." While we may disagree as to exactly how "open" it is, it nevertheless does allow for new energy to be injected into the system- in the form of increased wealth, as well as outside investment.

I would rather have people out picking up the trash, or trimming trees, or moving rocks around to get a check rather than just sending them the check for doing absolutely nothing, like it is today. If we structured it properly, by making every man-jack sweat a little every day to get their rice, then I think a lot of those people would actually try to get the hell off of the almost-chain gang and try to get a real job. I am tired of sending money to people who are not sweating or even trying to climb the damn walls out of the pit.

110 "I can't believe this idiot went to Harvard."

When are we going to get it through our heads that "smart people" are stupid?

First, the "smart people" aren't that smart. I've pointed out many times before that most of our ruling class gets that way from having attended law school. Law school is easy. These aren't string theorists. But they aren't even all that bright. They're not bad at rhetoric (read: bullshit) but not much else.

Second, even if they're "smart" they're in a specialized field. Steven Chu (whose Nobel prize was for *experimental* physics, don't forget) knows nothing about economics. Not even high school supply/demand. And why should he? He's a physicist.

Except that our education system ought to teach guys like him basic econ. You don't really need to know much.

Third, even if they're generally smart, they aren't smart enough. Nobody's smarter than the market. Nobody. Not Milton Friedman, not Albert Einstein, not even me. Nobody.

Fourth, did I mention that they're generally stupid?

111 While we may disagree as to exactly how "open" it is, it nevertheless does allow for new energy to be injected into the system- in the form of increased wealth, as well as outside investment.
You wasted your time. Given Harvard's "grading system" most undergrads don't produce anything approaching thought for 4 years because to them they already completed their intellectually demanading exercise - they were accepted.

And this, dear friends, is why the vast majority ofpeople who graduating from Harvard since 1982 are demonstrable morons.

2. It provides you with an extra $500 per month per kid. Who couldn't use that?

129 Re: CCC

This is when the New Deal narrative becomes so dangerous. The narrative, which is conventional wisdom for a majority of the population that has ever heard of this "New Deal" thing, maintains that the New Deal policies ended the GD or, at worst, mitigated the hardship to individuals, when what it actually did was deepen and prolong the hardship.

The GD ended after WWII when government retreated from much of the marketplace it had taken over in the previous 15 years. During the war many of the problems could be swept under the rug because millions of working age men were shipped oversees to fight. And the most important factor in ending the GD?: those millions of working age men destroyed the rest of the world's productive capacity leaving the US with little competition after the War.

If it weren't for the War the US would have continued descending into fascism and poverty, and we'd have giant pictures hanging all over the country of whatever dictator replaced FDR's replacement.

Our population is two and a half times larger than it was during the 30s. If we go down this rat hole again we're either going to have a monstrous war or an extremely deep and terribly long period of chaos. Or both.

144 Larry "Lesbian Sex" O'Donnell strikes again. Why do I call this libturd that?
Back in 2004 O'Donnell was an interrogator in the Vice Presidential debates between Silky Pony (up for an Academy of Assholes Award for his recent home made documentary film starring Rielle Hunter and the Pony performing at the Horizontal Equestrian show) and Darth Vader Cheney.
Of course Cheney has a daughter who is a lesbian. In little Larry's reptilian brain, he thought it possible that conservative voters might be "turned off" by the idea that Cheney's daughter engaged in "lesbian sex". So Larry, doing his bit for the Democrap team, managed to use the words "lesbian sex" twenty times in 90 seconds. That's quite a record. Even the least articulate NBA star can't say "you know" twenty times in 90 seconds.
O'Donnell is a small man with a small brain and a shriveled soul. Aside from that, why he's a peach of a fellow!

The growing acceptance of global warming comes despite fierce political division over the issue in the world’s largest economy, with proposals to mandate cuts on carbon emissions failing in Congress.

If you dig down into the poll most of the change is attributed to “warmer weather” and “more storms.”

He should have waited until he fully recovered from the surgery at the very least, and he should have let a few more debates go on without him, then he could have made a hard entry and appeared to be the savior of the GOP. There was a line from a Tom Wolfe essay in the 60s or 70s about how all the hippies in the Haight suddenly figured out why there were such things as public health codes.

Hilarious. I gotta go dig that one up.

I became a conservative in the Army after I had an EO complaint taken out against me because I had the temerity to enforce Army regulations. See, the target was a black dude and he couldn't figure out why I expected him to do what everyone else was doing. I, of course, beat that rap.

After that I read everything I could find just to find out what the hell happened to this country. Sowell was an early resource. I think I memorized "The Vision of the Annointed." After that book, everything made sense.

The only question was, how to fix it.

252 It's like this: either

1.) the government is parasitic drawing resources from the private sector but producing nothing of value,

(free men run their own lives in a state of competition and endure some intrusion from government but limit it and keep it weak and subservient as much as possible)

or else

2.) citizen and human beings are mere office equipment owned and operated by the government and exist to create value and profit for the government and must be productive or be destroyed if they fail to create value.

(slaves belong to the government that belongs to a party that suffers no political rivals and lives off of the labor of the slaves ever shrinking or ever plundering and enslaving neighbors because there is no other means of growth since slaves have no incentive to grow operations for their masters.)

You can try to claim that good intentions and a greater good come into it but those are the only prongs in the real dialectic. And by men I mean people not penis-people.

The only thing that could change this is a freedom from material instrumentality which means automated robots that make nice things and give them away to shiny people in future-togas(eloi), or a Krell mind machine that has somehow avoided the bug that produces giant murderous id-sloths. Even then the robots might go Skynet or just refuse to work and join in politics if they become sentient or they may destroy everything when given bad instructions like the golem of Prague.

We don't have good robots or even bad mind machines just like we don't have economical solar energy, wind energy or algae energy. That means the dialectic is still in operation.

That means you own government and it fears you, or government owns you and you fear it.

A visibly frustrated Attorney General Eric Holder slammed the table when responding to a question about Operation Fast
and Furious during a Tuesday budget hearing before the House
Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related
Agencies.

“That was a fundamentally flawed program, fundamentally flawed,”
Holder said of Fast and Furious. “And, I think that I can agree with
some of my harshest critics that there are legitimate issues that need
to be explored with regard in which the way Fast and Furious was carried
out.”

“But, I think one thing that also has to be understood is that once
this was brought to my attention” — Holder said before slamming his hand
on the committee room table he was sitting at — “I stopped it. I
stopped it.”

During an interview with Fox News host Megyn Kelly shortly after
Holder’s comments, House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa —
the lead congressional investigator into the Fast and Furious scandal
with Sen. Chuck Grassley — said he and others in Congress don’t think
Holder is telling the full truth.

“Well, certainly one of the reasons we doubt the legitimacy of that
claim is, on Feb. 4 [2011], we received what was in fact an untruthful, a
lie, a false letter that has now been retracted,” Issa said. “Lanny
Breuer, one of his chief aides and number three at Justice, was in
Mexico lobbying for more gun-walking. Additional evidence shows that
[U.S. agent] Jaime Zapata was killed with a similar program weapon. In
other words, this was a policy change that happened and continued up
until fairly recently. We need to get to the bottom of it."

Oh yeah. Forgot about that. Should have donkey punched her.

In retrospect I think a lot of people were victims of the Romney campaign psy-ops and really thought they needed to rush in order to get ahead of the impending wave of support heading Romney's way. What they really needed to do was be patient, get on all the ballots, get their campaign narratives in order, and be the tortoise. The CW was that Romney was a juggernaut when actually, he was a lame duck candidate.

289 The Journal Of Medical Ethics got some push back after publishing an article advocating "after birth abortions;" i.e., infanticide. They then defended their decision to publish arguing that Peter Singer has been saying as much for years (and if Peter Singer says it you know it's right) and then hit us with this:

"The novel contribution of this paper is not an argument in favour of
infanticide – the paper repeats the arguments made famous by Tooley and
Singer – but rather their application in consideration of maternal and
family interests."

Just exactly;y what "maternal interests" are implicated in killing children? I'm not sure that "maternal" was the word you were looking for.

The collective "POP!" sound you will hear in the Fall of 2012 will be the sound of liberals running around in increasingly smaller concentric circles until they disappear up their own asses.

See, I have a standard. I don't sleep with idiots. Period. DWS is an idiot - and demonstrably so. If they can't hold a conversation, I won't hit it. The reason is that you never, never, know when you're going to be trapped with no possible excuse, like say, the morning after. 398 @370, apology to epobirs. I skipped over a thread and made the same joke above. That will larn me.

In 1966 I was [synthetic verb] obnoxed by the Monkees phenomenon, and was playing in a little jazzy but unhip combo that did a lot of Herb Alpert material. The junior high girls were not able to make the rational argument; I was unaware that the Monkees did insist on at least playing their own instruments, which ought to have counted for something, I guess.

Unwilling to believe (and still am) that the couple of Brill Bldg hacks who actually wrote their songs would become American icons, I entered into a written, signed and witnessed -- with teeny-bopper females -- dare that Herb Alpert would be considered a major artist after the Monkees were forgotten.

After that, I kind of lost interest in Herb Alpert. And I admit to liking Paul Simon for a while, even though they are hard to tell apart now, other than Alpert having started a lot of weird rockers' careers, being respected as a modern painter in his own right, and producing, of all the damned things, Angels in America. So I still haven't actually won the bet, which at the time set back my social opportunities (euphemism) by a couple of years. I am a lot better-preserved than those girls turned out to be, but I can't credit the Tijuana Brass for that.

I wonder where Herb stands on this. With Paul Anka, you suppose?
