$200,000 in debt per family, my groovy babies. This is His Majesty's most lasting monument: a towering mountain of debt.

Obama's corporate tax plan is a total bust.

Obama had no experience in the private sector before becoming president. The free market is a sort of theoretical construct he learned about in college. But Geithner should know better. He’s had lots of contact with all sorts of executives, both at Treasury and when he ran the New York Federal Reserve Bank. If he has any doubts about this plan, he should resign. And if he doesn’t, he never should have gotten the job in the first place.

NPR's Prairie Home Companion is a high-brow Hee Haw, and Garrison Keillor has made a career out of his smarmy you-betcha radio persona. Less well known is Keillor's far-left politics and unpleasant real-life personality. He's also the foremost example of what a boring liberal mouthpiece NPR has always been.

He doth Reason Mistakkenly.

Sadly, the only difference separating Mr. Obama from the long-dead mistaken mercantilist quoted by Mokyr lies in how each spells and capitalizes words.

I am not an admirer of tattoos. Frankly, I find them vulgar, particularly on women. (Apologies to any of my beloved Morons who are sporting ink, but so it is.) Tattoos also have a lot of social signaling effects, many of which the tattooed person probably does not intend.

Teh Krugman once again fails to do basic research before spouting off, and gets called on it. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Teh Krugman to issue a correction or retraction.

To the Greek public sector: Er, you guys know that you're flat broke, right? (The fact that it involves workers in the Greek Social Security office would strike me as mordantly humorous but for the fact that it's long past being funny.)

"[F]rom here, bond market returns are about as attractive as following a plague of locusts across a field of corn."

Some background on the Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). (The "Kansas City school".) I think it's junk, but hey, what do I know: I follow the Austrian School myself, and it's been the butt of jokes from mainstream economists for decades. Arnold Kling isn't a fan either.

The Greek CDS argument may not be over yet.

Is the European crisis over or just beginning? It ain't nowhere near over.

Peter Orszag's new nugget of folksy wisdom: You should be glad the economy is in the toilet because you'll live longer! The longer to savor our misery, I guess.

ALL IS WELL! The ass-kissing and ego-stroking on display in this article may actually cause you to vomit, so have a bucket handy if you choose to read it.

You may soon have to drop a hundie to fill your hoopty's tank if gas keeps going up.

US Postal Service warns of "potentially adverse reactions" as USPS employees receive word of which facilities are slated for closure. Unionized public-sector employees causing a ruckus? I've never heard such a thing! (h/t Gabriel).

5 TODAY IN HISTORY:

During the bloody Battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines from the 3rd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment of the 5th Division take the crest of Mount Suribachi, the island's highest peak and most strategic position, and raise the U.S. flag. Marine photographer Louis Lowery was with them and recorded the event. American soldiers fighting for control of Suribachi's slopes cheered the raising of the flag, and several hours later more Marines headed up to the crest with a larger flag. Joe Rosenthal, a photographer with the Associated Press, met them along the way and recorded the raising of the second flag along with a Marine still photographer and a motion-picture cameraman.

7 I don't mind tattoos if a) they're fairly "modest" and directed (ie: a Marine with a marine tattoo) or b) they're part of a well conceived and executed collective (ie: people who really do use their skin as canvas, but who do it well. Note: these are very, very rare).

Other than that, I mostly think they range from silly to stupid. I'm pretty sure every Gaijin douche-bag who gets some kanji on his bicep is probably actually getting the Japanese for "Heh. Stupid American."

Who said we were judging? Do you feel a little self conscious?

We said we don't like them. Not that you were a bad person for having them, or that they meant you were uneducated and dumb. For me, most of them are silly or stupid (or somewhere in between), with very few exceptions.

That's not "judging," in any reasonable sense of the word.

Keillor needs to just fade gracefully away, but he should have done it about ten years ago. Obama, in his dotage, will be a lot like Keillor. He just won't be able to believe people don't love him like they used to.

21 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for unemployment benefits
were unchanged last week, holding at the lowest level since the early
days of the 2007-2009 recession and giving a fresh sign the battered labor market is healing.

Workers filed 351,000 initial claims for state unemployment benefits, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's figure was revised up to 351,000 from the previously reported 348,000.
A Labor Department official said there was nothing unusual in last
week's data, although claims were estimated for three states, including
California.

There's nothing unusual comrades, just like voting in Chicago

The improvements in the labor market have helped President Barack Obama's reelection bid because voters consider jobs to be the most important issue in the November presidential election.

23 Facial tats are not causal to low productivity. The correlation, however, may be extremely high.

This is true. The author's point, I think, is that they become cyclical. That is, someone who would otherwise be highly productive is prevented (to some extent) from being so because of their facial tattoos.

Face it, do you want your banker, lawyer, or insurance agent to have facial tattoos? Most people don't. So people with facial tattoos (or weird hair colors, or faces full of piercings, or whatever) tend not to get highly productive, professional careers.

Anyone see the problem that the Tesla cars are having?
If you ever let them drain completely, the battery ceases to function and turns the car into a "brick". You can't move it, even in neutral. It costs 40,000 to replace the battery and isn't covered by warranty.
That means if you leave it parked for too long without being plugged in, then it will potentially turn into a "brick". The battery drains itself whether the car is on or not(albeit at a much slower rate).
What a complete failure.
Oh and screw the people who sullied Nikola Tesla's good name by attaching it to this awful car company. How dare you.

37 I despise tatoos. The first thing I ask my sons when they say they are going out with or have a date with a girl is whether she has a tatoo or not. You can certainly tell a lot about a person who has one, esp a female. The Marine tatoo with possible caveats for Army ranger, Navy seal, etc. I can tolerate but that's it. My grandparents, my parents and I didn't study our heads off and work our butts off to raise ourselves out of a rural hardscrabble legacy to have my sons descend back into the dregs of society and then advertise it to the world. I know, right? I think of him when I think of The Greatest Generation. Just like them, he had his faults and some of them were pretty glaring. He was literally the poorson of a sharecropper in Mississippi Delta(no exaggeration), destitute, devastated even further by the flood of '27, and then the great depression. Picked cotton by hand for 50 cents a bale (which is a LOT of cotton), and lived in a shack and knew hunger. This was all he knew.

57 Several of the nearly two dozen employees at bankrupt solar panel maker Solyndra LLC who were approved for bonuses Wednesday had months earlier received pay raises as high as 70 percent, a fact the company never disclosed in its request for bonus cash.

The company’s bankruptcy attorneys sought permission for the bonuses in a court hearing, arguing that the extra cash is needed to keep key employees from fleeing only to be replaced by more expensive outside consultants.

With little chance of stable employment and officials moving to liquidate assets, the workers needed to wind down the company have little incentive to stay, the Solyndra attorneys argued.

But an attorney for fired Solyndra workers railed against the plan, saying several of the proposed bonus recipients had received significant salary increases even after the company went bankrupt.

The best part of that movie to me was the scene in the huey where Mel is talking to pilot Greg Kinnear. They show a forward looking shot through the cockpit that is absolutely harrowing. 67 Iwo - my Dad commanded A Co, 21st Marines, 3dMarDivfor 33 days. He was wounded on the last day of official combat along the northern cliffs. He replaced his company personnel roughly 3x over during the battle. These were jumbo rifle companies, not todays streamlined ones. He told me that after the first3 days of combat he replaced half his company's numbers with raw recruits who were cleaning the cosmoline off their new rifles on the beach. 72 Most tattoos are "unfortunate" and if you want to see what they look like after 30 years visit a VA hospital. One of the dumbest fashion trends ever.

I had dinner at a chinese restaurant with friends and their collegestudentdaughter who was showing off new ink on her upper arm;a butterfly with the supposed chinese symbol for LOVE. I asked her if she was sure that was an accurate translation since her "art work" was done by someone who didn't read chinese characters. Shethought ita silly question until the waiter wandered by our table and I asked him what hersymbol meant in chinese. Helooked closely and said she had theword "House" on her arm.

The delusions. Do they burn?

I know a number of professionals with tattoos, but you'd never know when you see them in a polo shirt and khakis. The designs range from stupid to unflattering to childish, but they don't interfere with making a good living. (They may interfere with other things; a picture of another woman's baby on a man's chest is not a turn on.)

We're back to Theodore Dalrymple's writings about how the rich can do stupid things, but when the underclass emulates them their lives get worse. If you've got a multimillion-dollar trust fund, you're not too concerned with getting that job at the Kwiki-Mart. Then again, you don't see too many people who grew up rich sporting facial tattoos, do you?

Yes, PN, we were judging all of those with tattoos based on the few we've seen with facial tattoos. We weren't at all using our own judgement having seen other people with visible tattoos and determining, in each case, that they're normally douche-bags.

We didn't come to the conclusion "tattoos (especially visible tattoos) normally indicate douche-baggary" by seeing that most people we know with highly visible tattoos (facial or otherwise) tend to be douche-bags. Not at all.

Of, first of all, you're relying on two of Romney's main weakenesses - his believability and his vulnerability in the election to RomneyCare. Lefties aren't going to buy that "replacement" bullshit, independents won't either because that's too nuanced for them, and conservatives aren't going to be excited about setting up 50 little socialist programs. This is just a replacement for Medicare and if you think it's going to save any money, I've got some nice, federally protected wetlands in Florida I want to save you.

I'm gonna vote for the guy, but the meme from the HMFIC and his cobs here are that Santorum is anti-freedom while they're ready to back Romney who is even more anti-freedom.

OT: I didn't watch the debate last night, but heard excerpts on the
radio this morning. When you just listen, Mitt sounds
horrible--stammering, jabbering, almost incoherent. He sputters.

I tortured myself and watched the whole thing. My thoughts at conclusion were: the only one that does not stutter, stammer and search for smooth sentence structure is Newt. Paul, Santorum and Mittens sorely lack that quality. Santorum being the worst. He caught several boo's. Not good.

If I had one lasting impression last night, I kept thinking in my head, Santorum carries himself off as such a total douche. I'm stumped at the recent polling that showed his likeability 10 pts higher than Mitt with women....because to me, RS does not come across as an affable person. He comes across as a dick. Who doesn't smile. Who has no innate charm. It's a valid worry...considering how about 1/3 of the country chooses its candidate.

Monty - Re MMT - is your disagreement with their description of money mechanics, or with the more philosophical side of the equation? I think the former is hard to dispute, but the later can be taken to a rather Statist kind of extreme by Libtards.
In my opinion the only major hole in how we manage the system, from an MMT standpoint, is the fact that we "borrow" to finance the deficit. (It is my view that interest rates can be controlled more easily and directly by the Fed simply settingthe ratearbitrarily.) The borrowing is done to sterilize the deficit by removing money from circulation. Because of that, it kicks money-supplyinflation (if any) down the road, and magnifies it by adding interest payments. So, when the notes come due you either print more money to pay off the "debts" or you have to tax more and take more money out of the economy. One other problem is that most people can't see the distinction between debt at the personal, state, and federal levels. Why complicate it?
If we simply printed to finance the deficit, any money-supply inflation effects would be nearly immediate. This would be a level tax across brackets, which is a widely accepted measure of "fairness." It would provide immediate feedback to tell us whether the government was spending too much, or in the wrong direction.

I think the Maldives lie close enough to India that they can be said to have a valid interest in peace and/or stability there. You might stop just short of calling India "our ally," but they have not yet made total asses of themselves, lately, in their own international arena.

I'd just as soon see them as the (obviously, dirty and back-room) peacemakers here, rather than, say, the Chinese, who certainly must see this as their Monroe-doctrine sphere, too. And they just might be more effective in preventing an Islamicist holocaust than we have been --- although I hear it's already too late for their National Museum, which covered the human presence there before the coming of the Sons of the Prophet. It's been destroyed.

So, what are your suspicions and objections to Indian diplomatic involvement in the Maldives?

401 with same institution/plan just paperwork @that ins. (maybe out of 1 plan and immediately into another but you shouldn't have to touch a check)

401 with different ins. (out of 1 and into another, they may be able to directly transfer, or directly mail check)

No 401 (have to roll into personal IRA/Roth)

I'm fairly confident that my "distract their advance with a piece of string" tactic will work. If not I'll deploy the Strategic Vacuum Reserve.

234 I was banned from LGF because when they referred to Cain as a fake black man I responded that he was much more authentic than zero as Cain came from the black community and zero is biracial with no background in that community.
I guess it's no longer historic when you point out that he's more white than black.

240 Monty,
I totally agree with you about tatoos. I find them distasteful on women. Don't they realize as they get older they won't.. .um...wear well?

I never understood using your body as a billboard (stolen from Tallulah Bankhead in Lifeboat.)

241 I think there is one excuse for a tattoo. You were a sailor; you were in port and drunk. You didn't have enough money for anything really good, but you had an hour to kill before going back to the ship.

242 "A taxpayer voting for Obama is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders."

The problem is that the JEF can get re-elected WITHOUT any votes from taxpayers:

HALF of Americans don't pay income tax despite crippling government debt

245 Sometimes I think women who get tattoos are closet "cutters". Would never mark myself up that way, and confess a strong prejudice against deliberate scarification of the body.
