Obama Ups Subsidy For Chevy Volt to $10,000 While Cancelling $8000 DC Voucher Program

Question, by the way.

Obama talks a lot about the rich paying their fare share. And suggests it's patriotic to overpay taxes.

That being the case, why do the rich not purchase the Chevy Volt without the subsidy? Sure, it'll cost $7500 more (or $10,000 more, according to Obama's new budget).

Is that not patriotic? Why do Obama's rich minions need to be bribed into (supposed) virtue?

Anyway, the rich win, the poor lose.

That's not a surprising outcome in socialism.

In case you haven’t been shopping for a Volt — and odds are, you haven’t — the vehicle carries a hefty $41,000 price tag. So what kind of person benefits from that tax credit? General Motors says the average income of a Volt buyer is $175,000 per year. And according to Bill Visnic, senior editor for Edmunds.com, “The Volt appeals to an affluent, progressive demographic.” In other words: rich yuppies.

The Daily Caller reports that the subsidy “would cost taxpayers $100 million each year if it is approved by Congress, presuming only 10,000 new-technology autos are sold each year.” And if the President reaches his goal of putting 1 million of those kinds of cars on the road by 2015, the subsidy could cost $10 billion.

Why is the subsidy necessary? It’s no big mystery. Despite the slick marketing, high-gas mileage, and environmentally friendly cachet that comes along with them, the cars just aren’t selling. In January, General Motors sold 603 Volts — almost twice as many as in January 2010, but less than half of its total sales in December. And in 2011, GM missed its projected sales volume for the vehicle, shipping 7,671 of the vehicles — well short of its target of 10,000.

...

To be clear: $10,000 in taxpayer funds to subsidize the purchase of an electric car versus $8,000 to give a child a choice in education. We know what the President chose. Which would you pick?

During the ObamaCare debate, there was some question whether Obama would choose to lose his progressive base or the independents who hated ObamaCare.

Not a question at all, I thought. Progressives give you money and votes; Independents, at most, will give you votes (and they'll tend to split votes fairly evenly besides).

So, forced to choose, you go with the people giving you the money.

As Allah noted last night, Obama also chose to kill Keystone. Sure, tens of thousands of construction workers would have had jobs. But they don't donate money -- and the Sierra Club and other progressive "environmental" groups do.

Now, as between poor people in DC, who are voting for Obama no matter what, and the green lobby, or especially the cash-rich Teachers unions -- who does Obama side with?

The ones with the money.

Not really all that hard to explain. Odd thing about socialism -- while some of the rich claim they want a socialist society, they want the costs of their preferred mode of government to fall on others, too.

Which itself isn't surprising, either. Once you've got the socialist frame of mind, why shouldn't your preferred socialist mode of government come out of someone else's pockets, too?

38 The average income of a volt buyer is $170,000. Why are we subsidizing a second car for people who probably already drive a BMW.

My friends who have a Leaf (same concept as the Volt) live in a beautiful house on the lake. He is a mucky muck at Microsoft, and she is a scientist. They both make 6 figures each, and the Leaf is their third car (because you need to have 2 reliable cars in order to own an all electric car). She told me it takes 5 hours to charge the thing, and it only goes 80 miles at most! (Less if the heater is on, etc.) She has never complained about how much their electric bill has increased because they can easily afford it. Subsidies for electric cars are direct handouts to the wealthy. I asked her how much the charger cost and how much it cost to install it (you need to upgrade your electrical in the garage). She said it was free! I thought "wow, I'm paying for this crap." Luckily, I didn't say that outloud!

44 The real motivator on the D.C. voucher issue is pandering to the teachers' unions. My sister in law is one of those teachers who at one time cared more for kids' education, but she has been completely turned by the union. You listen to these people and it is just mind-boggling that they don't see how self-serving they sound.

They hate, and I mean hate with a passion, the existence of any schools that employ non-union teachers. The new governor of Michigan is going to take over a few districts that have been extremely badly run, and failing miserably for decades. The Detroit Public Schools and a couple of others.

The unions of course oppose this. And I have yet to meet a white union teacher that would ever, in a million years, consider sending their own kids to a disgusting mess like the Detroit Public Schools. If these teachers were honest, they would admit that these schools are good enough for ghetto kids, but not good enough for their own kids.

The fact that black leaders, such as Sharpton and Jackson, go along with Obama's dumping poor kids in D.C. for the teachers' unions, says everything we need to know about their own lack of loyalty to their own people.

52 If these failed pieces of junk are the choice of affluent people, it would indicate by sales that there are far fewer rich folks than has been advertised. If that isn't so, the rotten sales numbers would have to mean that affluent people aren't as stupid as the the WH Communists think. Really. Who would want or need a Volt? Just more of the "green"scam. Have a look at this:
ELECTRIC cars could produce higher emissions over their lifetimes than petrol equivalents because of the energy consumed in making their batteries, a study has found.
An electric car owner would have to drive at least 129,000km before producing a net saving in CO2. Many electric cars will not travel that far in their lifetime because they typically have a range of less than 145km on a single charge and are unsuitable for long trips. Even those driven 160,000km would save only about a tonne of CO2 over their lifetimes.
The British study, which is the first analysis of the full lifetime emissions of electric cars covering manufacturing, driving and disposal, undermines the case for tackling climate change by the rapid introduction of electric cars. The study was commissioned by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership, which is jointly funded by the British government and the car industry. It found that a mid-size electric car would produce 23.1 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime, compared with 24 tonnes for a similar petrol car. Emissions from manufacturing electric cars are at least 50 per cent higher because batteries are made from materials such as lithium, copper and refined silicon, which require much energy to be processed.

GM is a classic "Reverse Midas" Obama success story:

*

GM’s turn-around hinges on a market share above 19 percent, board
member Stephen Girsky said at an industry meeting in October 2009. “The
public plan is 19 percent and change. That is what everything is being
based on,” Girsky said during a panel discussion at a conference at
Columbia Business School.

In the 3rd quarter of 2009, GM had a market share of 19.5
percent. The share climbed to 21.8 percent in January 2011, and eroded
ever since.

155 nobody deserves the JEF and his bullshit.

If America can't reject it after 3.8 years of it. Than yes, yes we do.

I mean really a $10,000 kickback on a car? That is a huge market advantage. The American people should see that tipping the scales this far on a market product cannot be justified in any way. It is structured society BS. What competitive automobile would not be instantly sold out if it suddenly had a 10K rebate on it? The 10K is to cover up the boondoggle which was a car that never should have went into production.

BFD. Not only that it looks like a Corvette that got sodomized by an damn Edsel - ugly as a shit wall. Plus Obama rained a half billion on the company, and they have nowhere to go but down, taking their Swedish (and American - those poor saps are getting laid off from Fisker's US operations as we speak...) jobs with them. Not to be mean to you LM, but, really? Formatting has been purely manual and linking hasn't worked at all for the last few weeks.

And it's not so much aimed at you, but I still see some of the most reliable Morons asking these same questions.

So, for the record: some weeks ago one or more troll douches massively broke the blog via HTML in the "Name" field of the commenting box. As a result of the necessary fix, Pixy has disabled formatting and linking from inside the comments (which was precisely not the problem, but whatever). Some basic formatting is available by enclosing b, u, i, or s in square brackets [] instead of angle brackets <>, but no one has successfully gotten linking to work at all.

Shorten the URL (tinyURL, Bit.Ly, whatever) and paste it directly into your comment.

Well since the lunch was legally the property of the parent and the school destroyed it. I would have charged them total cost of materials plus time to prepare it, (at my usual employed rate) then reminded them that a minor cannot legally enter into a contract wherein they become indebted, or enter into an agreement that causes their parents to become indebted.
