Allen West: Obama's Jerking Us Around With Falsified Unemployment Numbers

West said:

"Can someone tell me how employment in the black community has improved at a rate three times the national average in just a few months?? With numbers like today, urban communities should be well on their way to economic recovery then! There is something suspicious about the job numbers released today and it has me very concerned," West wondered Friday. "Is this dramatic supposed decrease in black unemployment a result of job creation or is someone playing around with the census numbers??"

But economists immediately shot his suspicions down as "unfounded" and "paranoid."

Wait, no they didn't.

Economists reached by The Hill for comment couldn't fully explain the unemployment rate change for the black community. William Darity, a professor of public policy at Duke University specializing in African-American studies and economics, wrote in an email to The Hill that the decline could have been due to a smaller labor force. He called the drop an "unbelievably dramatic drop" but didn't rule out the possibility of someone tampering with the numbers; he said there was no evidence one way or the other.

49 All should keep in mind one thing when these numbers are released. If they don't break it down into categories, it takes at least 300,000 new hires just to break even. So if the "new jobs" number is less than 300,000 then real unemployment went up. If they break it down between government jobs and civilian, then they need at lest between 150,000 and 200,000 civilian jobs.

Turn women and

131 >>>They are trying to screw Allen West right out of Congress. Rumor has it
the Rs are complicit. I hope he jams it a yard back up their asses.

You're a week behind the times, you realize?

1.) The changes to West's district weren't part of some conspiracy. They had to happen, because of the stupid "anti-gerrymandering" ballot proposition that passed in 2010 -- West's district (FL-22) is one of the most gerrymandered in the country as things stand, drawn that way to carve out just enough GOP-leaning districts to make it competitive for the GOP Congressman who held it for 20+ years, Clay Shaw (who lost in 2006). With the new rules, it HAD to become more Democratic. The fact that it only got 4 pts more Democratic (and still may violate the new law) suggest, if anything, that the GOP tried really hard to make it as winnable for him as possible.

2.) It's moot anyway. West announced he's not going to run in FL-22, he'll be running in the more GOP district immediate north of it, Tom Rooney's old district. Adam Hasner, who dropped out of the Senate race and is a state Senator from the area encompassed by the current FL-22, is going to run in West's district instead.

But sure, better to think of it as a GOP conspiracy or something like that.

Posted by: ahem at February 04, 2012 05:46 PM (zmP+2)

134 Awesome of West to point this out. I hope people look into it; I'd really like to know what's going on with those numbers. And if it's as fishy as it seems, I hope this gets some circulation.

The O administration has already demonstrated a willingness to tamper with numbers and documents, willing to spout the most brazen lies with a straight face. And an MSM mostly willing to go along (or enthusiastically assist). We'll see much more of that this year.

The vast majority of people don't have the data or expertise to judge stuff like this-- they have to rely on what the the experts say, as reported by the MSM. Same goes for AGW-- that's why the Climategate emails were such a big deal. (It's true that actual personal experience, what people see with their own eyes going on around them, counts for a lot. But it's not everything; an MSM narrative can override a lot.)

It's going to be important, for the coming election, to hit O his administration on their total lack of credibility. The problem is to keep the focus on fundamental topics (e.g. economy) and not to go over-the-top off track, in such a way that O can neutralize and take advantage of his disbelieving critics (cf. birthers). Stuff like this (hockey stick or "hide the decline") moments are gold.

That's why, in a way, Romney's cautious response to Ingraham recently wasn't stupid: if he'd gone with an unqualified "right now the economy is getting worse", and these numbers are trumpeted by the MSM shortly after, Romney would've lost credibility-- and (if he turns out to be the nominee) it's important that his credibility stands in stark contrast to Obama's. The Dems MSM so would've beat on him for that. Romney did stress that *Obama's* not helping the economy, and is in fact suppressing any recovery-- but he has to do better in stressing that part of the story, because the MSM sure won't help. (They'll put the accent where they like, as we've seen.)

So, good on West.

STRONGLY AGREEIt's been my opinion that-- at least to a certain point-- a long nominating process is better than a quick coronation. If Romney had won everything easily, he wouldn't have any conservative pressure on him, or get much actual experience. The longer Team Not Romney keeps up the fight (again, to a point), the better a platform and nominee we'll get. Now, it's possibly that Newt could go all scorched-earth/kamikaze on us, but I'm wishcasting really really hard that he won't.And anyway, while the Presidency is important, so's Congress. President Romney with Dem majorities in both houses would be bad with a capital FFFFFUUUUUU. Republican majorities would be much, much better.Like the man said, you don't go to war with the army you want, but with the army you have. Even if they're a bunch of pantywaists who could get trounced by a second-grade soccer team.

Posted by: chemjeff at February 04, 2012 06:54 PM (7FadD)

181 "he said there was "no evidence one way or the other"

Here's a clue:
1. Obama needs to have the unemployment numbers come down or he hasn't much of a chance for re-election.
2. Black unemployment is worse than the general figure so it has to come down faster.
3. The MFM and others (especially those in government) will do and say and print anything to help him get elected.
4. *******
5. Unexpectedly unemployment is down (because more people have given up looking but let's not point THAT out.)
6. Unexpectedly more jobs are listed as being created.
7. Voila!! Mirable dictu!!! The recovery is HERE!!! ALL HAIL THE MESSIAH!!! ALL HAIL OUR GLORIOUS LEADER!!!

How can you tell if a politician is lying?

Their lips are moving.

182 It should be, "They look funny, therefore everything is just fine".

It doesn't necessarily mean "everything is just fine", either. Sheesh.

The numbers COULD have been tampered with. Sure.

The numbers COULD merely represent a statistical anomaly, but accurately computed.

I think people WANT to believe that the numbers were tampered with because it helps their case that Obama is a disaster.

183 The economy is recovering? It can't possibly be! If the numbers aren't what you want, then they must be falsified! The lack of evidence proves that the conspiracy is real!

That's why some people are thinking about West, Vic, and with good reason. In an ordinary world (that is, a world without an America-hating incompetent like Osama Obama), we would all say: "West? Good dude. In a few years he might be ready for higher office." Instead, he's looking more and more like someone who just might be able to straighten things out this year, and never mind his lack of experience as a political hack.

In short, he has the instincts and the moves, but not the practice. Compare that to The Mutt, The Newt, or RuPaul (or the SCoaMF), and West looks ready for the major leagues, right the hell now.

186 My referece to ace was with regard to a debate we had about utt's response to the economic numbers and Mutt saying the economy was getting better. Not the unemployment numbers which had not even been released yet. This West of thing was an example of how Mutt should have handled it.

As for the unemployment numbers anyone who can add and subtract knows the numbers are more phony than a three dollar bill. And yes, there is ample evidence of that. All you have to do is open your eyes.

Posted by: Vic at February 04, 2012 07:07 PM (YdQQY)

191 I believe that it was pronstar David "Axel" Rod that stated several months back that people don't care about the unemployment figure. They care about their personal situation and what they perceive the future is going to look like if current conditions remain the same.

SCOAMF/T and his horde of intellectually and emotionally deformed freak squad minions can spin the numbers any way they want. The economy is stagnant. It has no dynamism and people as a general rule aren't optimistic about the future. B+rry pushed socialized medicine and burned through a trillion bucks the first chance he got. He's a joke and his supporters are getting behind him now by default.

You think Mitt lacks inspiration for us? Imagine being one of the young dolts that elected this clown back in 2008. Now you're back in with your parents with 50k in college debt and no job prospects because a bunch of out of work 50+ers have taken the jobs you would normally have filled.

Look, there's two issues.

- Are the numbers accurately computed?
- Do the numbers tell the story that they are supposed to tell?

I think the answer to the second question is definitely "no", because we both know there are a lot more than 8.3% unemployed, because that official figure does not include the discouraged potential workers who have given up. (We know this, incidentally, because of other BLS statistics.)

But Allen West seems to be implying that the 8.3% figure itself is not correctly computed because the BLS people "cooked the books". I don't think there is any evidence of this. If you have it then please provide it.

Umm, he actually has executive experience? (Along with Jindal, Daniels, Perry, Palin, etc., etc....) I thought at one time we valued executive experience quite highly. In fact, I seem to recall an entire line of argumentation circa 2008 where we derided a certain first term Senator for having no experience....

Posted by: chemjeff at February 04, 2012 07:15 PM (7FadD)

197 How might one go about manipulating the GDP numbers? I'm asking because I wondered last year, after repeated and rather significant revisions to reported GDP numbers, if they might be manipulated. There was a one quarter, either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011 that was drastically revised downward. So, if the traditional measure of recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth, and in one particular quarter the numbers are bottomed out, would that make it less like for that necessary second negative growth report to take place?

Or am I COMPLETELY off in my line of thinking?

Problem is that was the argument used to defend Palin as Veep (when placed in the context of McCains age). It didn't convince. A significant portion of our side (and the middle of the road squishes) want an experienced individual (as in experienced in something akin to the presidency). The O-bots didn't give a shit because Hope n Change was more important that real experience. It's the same reason Rubio isn't ready to be the Republican nominee for president no matter how ultra-orgasmic he would be.

Posted by: Wonkish Rogue, Mutt Musher and optimistic about the future at February 04, 2012 07:19 PM (789+D)

201 Wonkish, based on my own, admittedly limited, research, there was no argument that would have convinced the anti-Palin crowd. Their dislike of her was not intellectual, it was visceral. There was just no touching it. And I found that in people who would have normally voted Republican as well as the dingbat majority in my area.

202 ChemJeff et all

One factor to be considered in the changes in unemployment statistics is that methodology was changed - this being January data, the changes went into effect with this report.

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

An article that discusses the benchmark and post-benchmark revisions,
the change to NAICS 2012, and the other technical issues, as well as
all revised historical Current Employment Statistics (CES) data, can
be accessed through the CES homepage at www.bls.gov/ces/. Information
on the revisions released today also may be obtained by calling (202)
691-6555.The actual implications of these changes will require some study, but the short answer is that the data is NOT directly comparable to prior years.

So "cooked"? Not exactly, but no way to know without someone doing some serious analysis. Like nobody in the MSM will do.

Posted by: chemjeff at February 04, 2012 07:35 PM (7FadD)

204 This entire process of how to calculate unemployed is a joke.
If someone who is considered unemployed, cannot find work after a while does not figure in the mix.
Is he employed ? Nope
Is he unemployed? Nope
What is he ? Nonexistent. That person is not counted as unemployed. Why ? to fudge numbers.
What about the self-employed , they usually don't qualify for Unemployment compensation.
Are they counted ? Nope, again to fudge numbers.
How do you know that people who max out their unemployment compesation, are not still looking for work? We don't, but we have numbers to be fudged.
I could continue, but I think you see a pattern......

205 Some of you's fellas should get out more. I first ran into it at zero hedge. There was a comprehensible explanation of what BLS had done to come up with the sun-shiny numbers. That was a few days back. Then it spread across blogs. NOW it's linked from the middle of the Drudge page, Santelli gives a coherent explanation too. this is going mainstream even if MSM doesn't want it to. I expect to see the market react badly on Monday.

206 Peaches, Go Pats! Oh yea! Anyway, I agree with you about the visceral hatred of Palin, I have that same exact hatred of SCOAMF. Posted by: Jaimo at February 04, 2012 07:53 PM (dBND+)

207 I don't buy the bullshit false choice argument that Mitt either has to grin like an idiot and agree that the economy is improving or accuse the BLS of fraud. A simple "these numbers show how out of touch Washington and this administration really are" and then launch into a list of the bad numbers (shrinking workforce, rising food and fuel prices, housing market still in the toilet, etc...) gets you where you need to be. If what you say reflects the reality on the ground better than the numbers coming out of Washington people will figure it out.

210 Peaches, without question a certain amount of the hate of Palin was a visceral reaction. But it was a visceral rxn that was intensified by the idea that not only might her personal qualities be annoying (from the view of some, not all, and certainly not me) but that she did not have enough experience to undertake the duties required of a Veep and consequently a president. When you combined those two elements it made Palin toxic to middle of the road types.

IOW when given the choice between inexperienced SCOAMF/T and inexperienced Palin those middlers choose Obama. The rationale being, I would suppose, well he might be inexperienced but he seems like a nice guy that gives soooper soaring speeches and will probably grow in office. That Palin woman? Well she's annoying and I don't want someone like that as Veep let alone president.

I suspect that Lt.Col West may have some of the same type of response.

Posted by: Wonkish Rogue, Mutt Musher and optimistic about the future at February 04, 2012 08:44 PM (789+D)

211 I actually hope that rising conservative stars like West and Rubio will think twice before considering a VP slot with Romney. A reasonable suspicion is that they would get the same treatment that Palin got from McCain's campaignstaff.
Remember that she was resented as an outsider to the GOP establishment, viewed as a threat to the hacks' comfortable and predictablecareers as establishment mediocrities who viewed theirtaskas "running a candidate for office," not "victory." Many of the knives in her back came from inside the McCain campaign.
There will be other chances. The possibility of V.P. should absolutely not be viewed as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

These numbers are not really that stellar, so I think someone is fudging something somewhere...
The ADP National Employment Report January 2012 Report Employment in the U.S. nonfarm private business sector increased by 170,000 from December to January on a seasonally adjusted basis. The estimated advance in employment from November to December was revised down to 292,000 from the initially reported 325,000. Employment in the private, service-providing sector rose 152,000 in January, and employment in the private, goods-producing sector increased 18,000 in January, while manufacturing employment increased 10,000.

“total non-farm payrolls rose by 243,000 in January and the unemployment rate decreased to 8.3 percent."
Those 243,000 jobs are the total after seasonal adjustments.
The question you should be asking is, what’s the un-tampered-with number before the adjustment?
Glad you asked. The Labor Department reported a loss of 2,689,000 jobs in January.
