Pelosi on Komen/PP: "When Women Speak Out, Women Win"

Grinning like an imbecile about her "big victory," as she termed it, Pelosi nevertheless went on to threaten that the money just might not be flowing to breast cancer as it once did.

“We certainly will be able to support them as we have in the past,” Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. But the extent of the public backlash, she added, is “a question of what other people in the country think about it.”

I'm glad that this is a victory "for women." I'm not sure what to make of all those pro-life women I know, though. I guess the implicit, and sometimes explicit, message is that they're not really women.

Did Komen cave? It's unclear. I think they did, but it's hard to tell, because Komen is spinning in both directions.

As a Komen Board member told Life News, the reversal is not really so much a reversal as a clarification of Komen’s grants procedures, which will still impact Planned Parenthood’s future funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Daniel Foster writes that it's pretty repulsive that Planned Parenthood is behaving like a mob "protection" racket. They seem to believe they are entitled to dip their beaks into any money stream that vaguely involves a woman's issue, even if they're not actually providing the services that would qualify them for a voluntary contribution.

They're not doing mammograms. Period. But they and their allies have got it into their heads that if they're "pro-woman," as they define "woman" (and as they define "pro"), they're just entitled to that breast cancer money.

And they're willing to actually threaten breast cancer treatment, prevention, and research over that.

6 There is an automatic assumption that women's health issues are more pressing then that of men. Yet heart disease is the biggest killer of Americans, and more men than women are affected. Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer, and more men than women are affected. I could go on and on. But the real statistic that everyone carefully ignores is that women have a life expectancy several years longer than men.

Why are we focusing on women's health?

And have you ever noticed that PP centers are clustered in the inner city? Are they, like Margaret Sanger, in the business of killing off miinorities in the womb?
Would that make this a victory for women, but a defeat for non-whites?
And are now non-whites in competition with women?

Until recently, all of the research on heart disease was performed on men. Men and women are not the same biologically (odd that consevative men pretend they are); so not all strategies that help men do help women.

But yes, let's stop funding medical research to improve the lives of half the population, so the other half doesn't feel left out. Nothing emotional about that at all.

The 'give 'em the benefit of the doubt answer may be because historically research was done using adult male volunteers. Therefore differences women had were not noted. I think that hasn't been an issue for awhile.
The cynical me says that women make most health care decisions - what doctor, what hospital, etc - so getting the women's approval means more dollars flow into the system.

Susan G. Komen update

[redacted], the Susan G. Komen foundation just released an "apology"
for its decision to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood breast
cancer prevention programs. However, Komen is still refusing to commit
to future grants to Planned Parenthood, so nothing has really changed.

The right-wing crusade to shut down Planned Parenthood continues
unabated. Not only are future grants from Komen not guaranteed, around
the country, state governments controlled by Republicans are cutting off
funding for Planned Parenthood as part of their war on women.

In order to make sure that Planned Parenthood can continue providing
essential health care services for low-income women, including breast
cancer screenings and prevention education, we have to give them our
direct support.

Please, chip in $5 to Planned Parenthood.

94 It makes me sad that I have family who only get political motivated when it comes to the right to kill their unborn children. Slightly over 50% of black children are aborted in America, the Margaret Sanger planned ethnic cleansing of darker skinned people has gone so well. Obama and his fellow liberals should be so proud to support planned parenthood.

I am not sure why you think that conservative men pretend that men and women are biologically identical. But when twice as many women die of lung cancer as die of breast cancer, yet the pet disease for most of America is breast cancer, that's a problem.

Could it be that because breast cancer is a women's disease it has been co-opted by the feminists as one more weapon to use against "male dominated society?"

The point is not to cut all funding for breast cancer, rather it should be funded based on some rational criteria -- just like all of the other research.

166 Hey. Where did everybody go?

Posted by: Jimbo at February 03, 2012 04:40 PM (O3R/2)

167 Let's just admit that no matter what happens in Nov '12, this nation will still be sliding down that slippery slope to chaos and ruin.

The liberals (Democrat, Republican, Rino, Dino, Green, Libertarian, Socialist, Communists, (insert Group thirsting for power here) et al have won.

Their numbers are overwhelming, their zealotry is intense, their reasonableness is non-existent, their arrogance is Pharonic their ignorance is abysmal and their blindness to history is total.

The continued fight for just a little slower slide is tiring and has gotten us nowhere and seems that it will get us nowhere. They're like T2's: they will not stop, they will keep pushing for their perceived utopian ideal and they won't entertain any arguments to do otherwise until they kill free enterprise and freedom itself.

Time to retrench, buy ammo and food. Find somewhere where you can make a stand and that allows you to still maintain contact and obtain resources with civilization (while it lasts).

Let them have the country. Let them bury it so deep in debt that when it finally hits bottom and they actually are forced to face the facts that THEY are the ones responsible for it's demise, then and only then will there be a hope of restructuring and reconstituting the United States (in whatever political boundaried shape it takes in the future).

If you've ever read ALL of Frank Herbert's Dune Saga then you'll remember the part concerning the God Emperor of Dune. Where the ultimate long lived benevolent despot enslaves the Galactic Empire so thoroughly and so subtly that it lasts thousands of years. The ultimate aim and result was to instill in the human psyche a final and fundamental rejection of humanity's apparent inner drive to create Kings and Emperors to worship and be enslaved by with the inevitable violent and bloody revolution caused by their eventual and inevitable rejection by the human spirit craving for freedom and liberty.

Liberalism is a mental disease and mental diseases mostly don't have cures just band aids. That's all we're doing and have done; putting band-aids on the destructive and restrictive tendencies of a group infected with a disease of perception.

The only way to ultimately stop them is to give them their way and let them ultimately pay for their stupidity and insanity on a personal basis. Too bad we'll be there with them.

Until then they'll continue to fight and struggle against conservativism. Convinced that if only conservatives would go away their utopian dream would come to fruition and any seeming past rejections of utopias were just the result of a lack of vision or interference by others.

Their counter to those who point out the countries that have fallen due to socialist/communist/collectivist idealism:
"WE'LL DO IT CORRECTLY!!!!!"

Time to stop wasting our energy holding them back. It's a shame and we all know that lives will be lost and pain and suffering will be experienced by the innocent but conservatives apparently don't have the nerve or the strength or the persuasiveness or the commitment to halt the seeming inevitability of their goals.

@97 mpfs
I think people should print up a little piece of paper that explains... I'm sorry but since PP main goal and "business" is abortion, and PP and the Girl Scouts are in a partnership, I will no longer buy girl scout cookies. I will begin to buy them again after PP has been shown the door. Maybe include afew statistics on how many abortions a year arearranged by PP. And maybe include the info on how young girls are getting around parental consent with the help of PP...
Or something to that effect. Otherwise, you try to explain it to the young girl at the door and you're just gonna get a whatever or blank look. The real "target" of the non-sale should be the leader or head of the girl scout office who will be certain to pass on a bunch of similar pieces of paper to the national president of the girl scouts. As a side effect, the mom of the girl scout sees it, the head of that girl scout troop sees it and the president of the girl scouts sees it. It might just wake enough people up to realize PP isn't that important to the friggin girl scouts.

173 Komen is mostly about agitprop and making the morally superior feel even better about themselves than they already do. Yah, yah, sponsor a "Cancer Walk" and beat the drums for a cure!
Meanwhile, back in the real world, all of the top drug companies are investing billions of dollars in cancer research. It's not like the research isn't already being done. They've been at it for decades, and the effort (and competition) is extremely intense.
That's where the curefor breast cancerwill come from, if it comes; not from do-gooder Baby Boomers on the march and definitely not from Uncle Sam.

I'm sensing a lot of bitterness here........ And strawman construction.

175 What I find funny is that people who were upset with Komen were declaring they would withhold support and money. Which is great. Freedom. They should get a say in where their money goes. Unfortunately, if you are upset with Planned Parenthood, well, er, um,... you still have to support them with money under threat of law.

176 Once againI have to ask the question. How many black babies have been killed by PP over the past year? Just a simple number from Boxer, Pelosi Bloomberg et al will suffice. Margret Sanger's plan is working, there is no doubt in that.

178 I hope that Komen gets its wings clipped over this, because the pink sh^t everywhere is ANNOYING, not to mention, politically correct. Anything to give money to an organization which only benefits women. And it's ALWAYS being rubbed in our faces - pink this, pink that, pink on NFL players for goodness sake.

Now maybe people's money will go to other organizations like the American Cancer Society, which benefit everyone.

If you gave money to Komen yesterday, dispute the charge on your credit card, or stop payment on your check.

Another thing to do: You know all the annoying pink appliances you find in many stores? Get a sticky label (Post It note) and write on it: "Komen Kills Babies", then stick that to the appliance. Be careful to not damage anything though.

It's something I've been doing for a while now.

182 Want your donation back?
Found this on another site:

I am not advocating one way or the other, but if you donated and wish to
reconsider, the following info came from a friend of mine who did so
successfully. She spoke to Komen, and they told her to do the
following.
Send email request to donorinquiry@komen.org
Include:
Name
Address
Date of donation
amount of donation
Reason you are asking for refund.

185 86Komen is profit-drivenBut Planned Parenthood is "for the children", right?

I wasn't implying anything about PP. I was just pointing out that anybody who jumped on the Komen bandwagon then jumped back off because of this whole fiasco shouldn't have been supporting them anyway because there are better cancer charities.

Posted by: not the mama at February 03, 2012 09:32 PM (96Kco)

186 55 Got a link? You've seen their balance sheets? You know this as fact, how? Got numbers?

If logprof's analysis isn't good enough for you, just go to the Komen website. They post all their annual reports and audited financial statements there.

http://ww5.komen.org/AboutUs/FinancialInformation.html

see how much goes to "research," "health screening services," and "treatment services," then compare that to how much goes to "public health education," "supporting services", and "direct benefits to sponsors and donors." I'm not even sure why that last category is separate from the "fund-raising costs" subsection in "supporting services," but it is a separate line item.

Posted by: not the mama at February 03, 2012 09:44 PM (96Kco)

187 103 I've noted several people who are giving numbers relative to how SGK spends the money they have. Relatively little for research ... where are you getting this info?

see post 186

Posted by: not the mama at February 03, 2012 09:48 PM (96Kco)

188 Can we lay off attacks on SGK itself? It is an organization dedicated to finding a cure for Breast Cancer. Why do we
assume they should be expert in the ins and outs of left wing Commiecrat, scorched earth
political attacks.

Posted by: Curmudgeon at February 03, 2012 11:10 PM (w7K7d)

189 "Pelosi nevertheless went on to threaten that the money just might not be flowing to breast cancer as it once did."

Spoken like someone that doesn't have to worry about sickness beyond a botox-created infection.

"And they're willing to actually threaten breast cancer treatment, prevention, and research over that."

Which is why if any of them get breast cancer, I will not be surprised. I would not mock them for it, but I also would not show them one damn bit of sympathy.

Posted by: SpideyTerry at February 04, 2012 09:22 AM (0eyhw)

190 If breast cancer didn't exist SGK would have had to invent it. I think they should make a thriller about the team of scientists who cure breast cancer being systematically offed by the SGK hit squad who can't let their sweet, sweet money teat go. One of the lines could be, "Cure breast cancer? Fuck that! We ain't goin' down like EASTER SEALS."

I realized years ago what a fucking racket this shit is. And the Planned Parenthood connection solidified my disgust. The Girl Scouts? That makes me sad. I forced my daughter to go...she hated it with every fiber of her being. Good instincts, there.

The local SGK breast cancer walk goes right past my house and the neighborhood association encourages every one to put out signs and pink bows and crap, or have a water table, etc. Think I'll have a "Walk for the Kill" sign next year.
