Another 1.17 Million People Leave the Workforce-- In Just a Month

Hot Air highlights Zero Hedge's big find in the new numbers:

A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that's not a typo: 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month!

So, all it took to budge the unemployment rate down to 8.3% is taking 1.2 million people out of the workforce altogether.

43 Let's be realistic for a moment.
- The economy is improving and people are seeing it and feeling it. - Obama is liked by most Americans (see his favorables) - Romney is disliked by most Americans (see his unfavorables) - Obama's campaign has a lot more money than Romney's
Add that all together and you've got a pretty high degree of likelihood that Obama gets re-elected.
It's interesting, every four years the conservative wing of the Republican Party talks about "now we're going to nominatea true conservative!" and instead you just keep nominating middle of the road guys. You people can't get your shit together and get behind one conservative candidate. You split your votes between several such candidates, leaving the moderate to take up all of the moderate votes and people who are just focused on perceived "electability." Apparently the GOP really is a moderate, right-of-center policy, that just has a very vocal right wing that talks a good game but doesn't really get anything done.

48 The Ray Fair model, the one that ignores the unemployment rate and focuses on GDP growth instead, is showing Obama getting 47.8% of the two party vote.

Like I said yesterday, keep your eyes on the "right track/wrong track" polls from Rasmussen and Gallup. Those are the true indicators of Obama's re-elect numbers. 8.3% or the more accurate 9.8% or 11.8% (if you use proper workforce participation and quit messing with the denominator) are not the predictor of reelection that the DNC would like it to be. They are hoping that they can get the number magically into the 7's and win the election.

I don't know if anyone else noticed on the official GDP numbers (did Monty point this out?) but the 1.9% growth is based on an unrealistic inflation number.

They also changed downwards the amount of White Males in the workforce... while increasing ethnic participation for both Black and Hispanic Males.

I'm filing for retirement momentarily. In '08 I made low six figures. In '09 I made nearly 80k. In '10 I made 60k, and last year I made a whopping 40k (including funemployment). Deduct 600 bucks a month for gas to get to work and back, several grand for dues....I've decided that this year I can *hopefully* make what my retirement would pay and have to get up @ 5 every morning or...I could just say the hell with it and be a lazy, fishin' on the riverbank bum.. I'm leaning towards bum...........

91 A whole lot of those 234K jobs may or may not actually exist, the BLS weighs heavily with the "Birth/Death" model. What they do is guess how many new businesses started up and hired, and how many went under.

In other words, they torture the data until it confesses

93 Finally that elusive hockey stick graph I've been hearing so much about over the last few years... hmmm not sure what this has to do with global warming however.

I have been feeling the same way lately. I'm not even sure what it means to be a conservative anymore. Seriously, people seem to want the fetters of government, so why should we stop them? How can we stop them? Conservatism appeals to individual aspirations; progressivism to individual interests. When push comes to shove, an amorphous aspiration cannot withstand the rush to the feed trough. Ever.
