Odd: Newt Hits Romney On Attempted Insensitive Cuts To State Budget

Baseball Crank observed, with regard to Romney's changeable politics, that if we ended up with him as a candidate, we'd wind up defending him and nothing else. Because we'd have to contort ourselves so to champion him that there wouldn't much much of conservatism left, apart from Mitt Romney himself.

I cited that as a good observation, and I still do think that's a problem.

However, I'm getting the same feeling about Newt.

First, it was that leftwing attack on equity funds. Which I joined, of course, as I thought it was pretty important we have a genuine, instinctual conservative as a candidate. Even though that candidate was joining in this Hail Mary stuff about "vulture capitalism."

Anyway, now it's that... Mitt Romney attempted to cut the state budget by ending expensive kosher kitchens in state-supported nursing homes, and instead called for kosher meals to get prepared off-site and bused in to the locations where they were needed.

Would have saved the state $600,000 a year. The Democratic legislature put the kibosh on it.

Anyway, that plan to save money has turned into Gingrich's new attack:

“Romney cut off kosher food to elderly Jews on Medicare. Both of them have the same lack of concern for religious liberty.”

And a Newt 2012 radio spot (listen here) goes a step further and declares that Romney...

vetoed a bill paying for kosher food for our seniors in nursing homes -- Holocaust survivors, who for the first time, were forced to eat non-kosher, because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents to eat kosher.

Yeah, it was never the plan they'd eat non-kosher, just that the kosher meals would be prepared in a central kitchen.

Eh, it's politics, I guess. But I suppose that must be the end of all the whining about negative attacks (as Rush Limbaugh terms it) from Newt.

I mean, honestly. Surely we won't be hearing any more about maliciously false claims after that.

Any and all cuts will be attacked by the left in this way-- there is always some inconvenience or change we're supposed to be outraged about, some protected constituency we're supposed to rally behind to keep those budget dollars a-flowin'.

If I thought Newt believed an inch of this crap, I'd be worried about him on that score. But I don't, really. Just any club in the bag.

I think in the end neither Newt nor Mitt is offering much except themselves; there is no Gingrism, like there was a Reaganism, and no Romneyism either. (And there was no McCainism.)

There is no central idea animating either campaign, just the man himself, and since we're really not discussing ideas, but rather men, the negative attack on the opposing man himself is the only game in town.

For both candidates.

4 Mitt wins this one. Of course, Newt can't get any slack for his various errors, particularly when they are inconsistent with conservatism.

That's how it is for conservatives. Gotta be perfect, or conservatives should support the guy with little more than a pretense of being a true conservative.

Romney can pander all day long and criticize conservatism hysterically, and it means nothing because no one trusts a word he says anyway.

10 Someone on HotAir last night got this one 100% right, and why it's so disgusting an attack. Remember, this is the "true con / Tea Party" candidate in the race (or so Sarah Palin tells us):
*****

The worst and most revoltingly hypocritical aspect of the “ZOMG ROMNEY HATES THE JEWS!” argument coming from Gingrich now, in his final despair, is that he is criticizing Romney for attempting to cut wasteful government spending. That’s right: Newt Gingrich, True Conservative Tea Party Hero, is attacking supposed Big Government Spending RINO Mitt Romney for trying to slash government subsidies and spending…and attacking him as a crypto-anti-Semitic religious bigot, no less.
Newt just can’t help attacking from the Left. That’s just how he rolls, b*tches.

11 You've pointed out the problem here a few times, R's used to think that government was fine as long as it was being used for things we approved of, these days conservatives just want government gone, problem is, there's no one representing that new mindset of conservatives. Mittens and Salamander are the last gasp of old guard Republicans, D's went through this with Obama and Hillary, Hillary was the old gaurd, Obama is the outright commie they really want, it's going to be interesting to see who steps up as the new guard of conservative thinking in the next 4 years, if anybody does.

91 Lame analysis, and lazy. It's intellectual passive-aggressiveness.

What we have is an all out, no holds barred, internecine fight, where both side are using attacks they think will work locally, regionally and nationally, and where false attacks and complaints about false attacks are virtually the same thing.

Pretending to divine future presidential policy moves or deep philosophical long-plays from either campaigns' tactics is retarded.

169 Ace, this is pretty much a fact free post. Alana Goodman has done some actual research and he was not CUTTING money for a kosher kitchen. He was vetoing a NEW special budget item, and of course the state mandated that the KOSHER kitchen be able to serve all of the home's residents while on a fraction were Jewish and Kosher. Money paragraph:

In the end, the veto was overridden by the Massachusetts state
legislature, and the facilities kept their kosher kitchens after all.
But Romney’s decision was not, as Gingrich claims, a choice to
“eliminate kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare.”
First of all, it was a choice made by the nursing homes themselves, not
the Massachusetts government. Second, it was never actually going to
prevent kosher residents from accessing kosher food. And third, Romney’s
decision wouldn’t have cut anything – he simply vetoed additional
funds, keeping funding at the status quo during a budget crisis year.
Which means Gingrich’s comments have little basis in reality.

incentives for business....would inspire kids to get into Math, Science

areas. .....So, what is wrong with that?

Let's see- it would be massively expensive, "incentives" is just another word for "taxpayer money", and private industry has no profit motive (other than massive amounts of taxpayer dollars) to build a moon base.

Other than being a stupidly expensive undertaking with little tangible benefit, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

Mitt Romney:

"I have always been willing to strike the Earth at a speed of approximately 27000 km/sec wiping out all life as we know it.

In Massachusetts, we set up Romneysmash as a model for other states to follow if they wish."

Newt Gingrich:

"SMOD has many good idea which deserve closer study.

However, I believe that we should enact these fundamental changes proposed by SMOD not with a meteor strike but with one of those water-park wave-pool generating thingies...a giant one surrounding the coast of Antaractica in order to generate continent drowning tidal waves."

Rick Santorum:

"SMOD is right. But while he's been simply flying around space, I've been fighting for a meteor strike since 1994.

A meteor strike which in no way engages or even approaches the Earth's cornhole."

Ron Paul:

"Is it possible for the SMOD to selectively strike the Federal Reserve?

....No?....

Well, then how about selectively striking the Joooooooos?

For comparison Newt is only a little ahead of him, and Romney only a little ahead of Newt and in the dead even category with Obama. If Romney gets the nod he HAS to pick a conservative for a running mate.
He has alienated the base so much he doesn't have a choice.
---
But who will fall for it? The VP does nothing, right?

For it to work for me it'd have to be someone who clearly did not need Romney's connections or money, someone who was such a force on their own that their willingness to serve was really a sign that they'd have some sway in the administration. Rubio wouldn't cut it for me. He's too green.

I dunno. Maybe a Palin type (although she's really lost me this past year) or perhaps a Fred type.

Actually, "conservatives" already did this - with Bush Jr.
After Romney, we might as well just go and call ourselves the "We'll follow him because he has an "R" next to his name" party. Not catchy - but more accurate.

"If Tim Thomas hates the government so much, why did he play for the US hockey team two years ago?" to

338 Look at it this way. George Bush was most assuredly NOT a conservative, yet most Conservatives and Republicans would scream "troll" and worse if anyone criticized their precious W.

The phrase "compassionate conservative" was a scam, but the scam part was not the first word (as Conservatives were duped to believe) but the second (as Conservatives mistakenly assumed to be true).

Mitt or Newt will govern just like W, so the sole question is who has the better chance to beat BO, and the answer is Mittens, as Newt's current behavior demonstrates. Newt will get himself hated by most of the country, who will despise the smarminess essential to his character and personality.

Mittens will not get himself hated. Mittens will focus on the bad economy and BO's mishandling of it. Mittens can focus on the economy because he has the capacity to step outside himself, to be objective.

Newt will make everything about Newt, because Newt is a solipsistic asshole who cannot help but make everything about Newt.

Once at the convention, it will be determined that the scorched earth campaign has damaged all the present candidates too much and since there will be hard feelings on all sides, the only option will be a shiny new candidate.

Without all the time for the media to destroy whoever it turns out to be, our candidate can be the one everyone projects their best attributes on, just as Obama was the enigma in 2008.

The SC returns were anticlimactic (they announced the winner with 0% reporting) so I'm hoping for some drama.

348 Winning a state at 39% ought to give you the willies about what would happen if either Newt of Santorum drop. You ought to be praying the trailer gets a Huckabee hair up his arse cause that's the only way McCain rolled over Mitt, and the only way Mitt is going to overcome the base's ardent dislike of him. In either event it's far from Mayan Calendar says "ROMNEY 2012. "

I voted for Santorum today.
He laid out a great case for how having a supporter of individual mandates as our candidate takes Obamcare off the table, and how we can't give up that argument.
And he rose above the Mitt/Newtmudfest to look like the adult in the room.
I know it's a real long shot for him to capture the nomination, and it's a shame he hasn't caught on. But his message on Obamacareneeds to stay in this race front and center for as long as he can afford to stay. And who elsein the race is going totalk about it so plainly and without nuance?
Regardless, itwas a great feeling to vote FOR someone in a Presidential race, rather than AGAINST the other guy(s) as a strategic measure. That doesn't happen too often.
However . . . I will crawl through broken glass to vote AGAINST Obama in November. I don't care who his opponent is. SCOAMF must be defeated.

My first venture out into the real world after begin sick was to go vote. I cried when I saw my ballot-Cain, Perry, etc. were still on it. I was so angry with those two, Cain, for letting me down with his immorality, and Perry, for not thinking before he speaks. Because of that, we have Mutts, Newt, Santorum and that whack job to choose from. I hope we have a prayer in the general next November.

I don't mean to sound maudlin, although I will blame the drugs. But really? Doing the dirty work for the Dems during the primaries? Not focusing on the real enemy? How can all these factions come together at the convention, brush off the dried mud and link arms and fight the Dems? THere is so much bad blood now, it's no wonder we can't win stuff. I don't know how Hillary did it after what Obama did to her, but I guess SecState was a nice balm. Would Mitt or Newt have either one in their cabinets?

I guess I want some grown ups to come to work, but there don't seem to be many. And I think Santorum is a genuinely good man, but what he believes personally will not fly throughout the US. He was doomed before he threw his hat in.

Itmay not looklike it at the time, but most election cycles, if you do an after action report, you can see where there was little (if any) way to have gone in a different direction. So yeah, this time in '08 there were people talking about how to beat McLame, but he got 30something percent in Florida, and it started creeping (pun intended) up into the 40s, and before too long the steamroll was down the path.

It's just the way it is. The R party is conservative in that it selects the obvious front-runner, whether that person's views are conservative or not (which obviously, they usually aren't).

H1-B employees by law have to be paid what US citizens are paid; they can't be paid less, so they aren't cheaper than Americans. Plus they have to prove there are no other qualified US citizens or residents that can fulfill the job requirements. (I suppose that can be gamed.)

Industries that have lots of H1-B employees are like that because there aren't enough Americans in those fields. For example, when I entered grad school (chemical engineering), half or more of us were furriners. About 4 years later, the entering class had only 1 white person, and he was Canadian.

Also, a lot of companies (even including some in science/engineering/technology) won't even look at you if you need an H1-B visa because it's expensive and a hassle to apply for.

When a crucial portion of your electorate is voting on who they think is a "cool dude with his heart in the right place", regardless of what he says, well...

Anyway, I originally supported Newt back in his mr. positive phase because I heard him say clearly on Fox that when you have a Conservative candidate come out and clearly delineate the difference between Liberal and Conservative principles, the Conservative will win. I think he was right, but then he started doing and saying everything against that.

So now we're left with a choice between Newt and Mitt over who we think is lying to us the least. Ugh...the meteor never lies.

426 H1-B employees by law have to be paid what US citizens are paid; they
can't be paid less, so they aren't cheaper than Americans. Plus they
have to prove there are no other qualified US citizens or residents that
can fulfill the job requirements. (I suppose that can be gamed.)

Yeah, that's how the law is written, but it's gamed beyond belief. Employers know that H1-B employees will work at a lower wage and are less likely to quit. It's been an open secret for years.

Back in the late 90's when tech workers were in genuine short supply the H1-B program made sense, but now it exists only to placate employers who enjoy hiring foreign workers at a lower wage.

Posted by: Muslim girl

Uhm, no, no, no. Mormons have a ceremony in their temples where you symbolically return to heaven and God's presence. The room that symbolically represents heaven is called 'the celestial room' and its usually used for contemplation and prayer. You can contemplate whatever you like, usually problems in your life that you need divine guidance on.

Mormonism isn't nearly as strange in reality as it is if all you know about it is cherry-picked fragments in a distorted form. If you really must act as an expert on Mormonism on the internet, read up on it at mormon.org or visit your local Mormon church, which is open to the public.

Indeed, it's really easy- you just pay all of your {engineers, developers, whatever} the same relatively low 50K/yr (or whatever). Then the only ones who will take the job in the first place are the H1Bs, but you have the paperwork to "prove" that it's the standard rate you're paying.

yeah, he also missed Hawaii by 40 pts. Nate Silver did an analysis of it and Rassmussen came in last. Silver is biased and he used the 40 pt. mistake in Hawaii to add to the average he missed by but it still happened.
