The Libs and know-nothing Obama lovers that claim they would vote for Paul have always puzzled me. Do they not know what they themselves stand for? Paul is smaller government, free market economy, fewer entitlements, etc., while most libs claim they are for "good" big government programs, they kinda like socialistic style governments in Europe and want to model American after them, etc. So how do you just switch over from Big Gov. Big O to small government RP ??????

Mitt Romney has raised the issue of Newt Gingrich's "work
product."

Wow.

Intended to prod the former Speaker on the issue of his
work for Freddie Mac (Gingrich last night released his contract
with Freddie), the question, as seems to be a Romney
characteristic, has clumsily backfired. It raises an all-too
obvious question that is becoming increasingly
revealing.

What is Mitt Romney's "work product" for the conservative
cause?

The closest Mitt Romney ever got to the Reagan Revolution
is apparently because he reads about it 30 years later.

BENGHAZI, Libya — Moammar Gadhafi loyalists seized control of a
Libyan mountain city in the most serious challenge to the central
government since the strongman's fall, underlining the increasing
weakness of Libya's Western-backed rulers as they try to unify the
country under their authority.

The taking of Bani Walid, one of the last Gadhafi strongholds
captured by the new leadership late last year, was the first such
organized operation by armed remnants of Gadhafi's regime. A
simultaneous outbreak of shootings in the capital and Libya's second
largest city Benghazi raised authorities' concerned that other networks
of loyalists were active elsewhere.

And it just means we go with someone who is not "vetted." But that doesn't mean that there wouldn't be stuff pulled out in the general.

I guess I believe all of these guys have things that can be used against them in the general. So short of it being a guy like Dick Cheney, who is fully vetted in a national election and about whom we know so much, I don't know who I'd feel comfortable about. Either they would be proven to be less substantive than we thought (hoped) they were - I could see this happening with a green guy like Rubio; or they would turn out to have positions we didn't actually like - I could see this happening with Bolton; or they could wind up having done something in their past, either political or personal, that a lot of voters find objectionable - basically the case with any politician who's been in office any length of time.

It's all a risk.

This may just be my irrepressible optimism (...think about it...) but I don't think him stepping down will make it any better. 1) he's not the only tax cheat the administration hired. 2) he's been there from day one, and it's only in the election year itself that he's stepping down.

I think, "Yeah, we didn't use Turbo Tax to file our taxes," is going to have enough legs to get through the election.

According to the poll, which was conducted online by Knowledge Networks immediately after the president's address, 91 percent of those who watched the speech approved of the proposals Mr. Obama put forth during his remarks. Only nine percent disapproved.

238 My criterion for a candidate is more based on the question: does this candidate grasp how serious our situation really is? I'm less concerned about ideological purity. I was willing to consider Cain because he clearly got it, but he showed he wasn't interested in foreign policy, and that was a deal breaker. Perry sort of got it, but he tends to view the world through a 10th amendment lens. Santorum may be OK. Right now, the Newtzilla is my best fit. MechaNewtzilla (aka the Mittbot v2.0) just doesn't seem to show that he gets it. Or his programmers haven't yet got to that subroutine.

Mitch had a nice reply, but I don't see him having the intestinal fortitude to go for the job. Ryan certainly grasps the problem, but he's not soup yet. My preferred candidate ('Cuda) decided to pass this time. But we really need someone with big ideas plus guts. We need a Churchill, not a Halifax. Sure Newt goes crazy, but at least he fights. Mittens just seems to cautious, too safe.

So, for a brokered convention to work, the delegates would have to be willing to vote for the late entrant on the second ballot. My understanding is that the delegates are obliged to vote along with their state's Primary winner on the first ballot.

Thanks, that certainly answers my question, namely, that it's essentially not possible for somebody to come in and take over the race at this point. Brokered conventions and 2nd ballots and all that, sure, but not a new candidate who could catch fire and run away with it by winning primaries.

Posted by: BurtTC at January 25, 2012 05:09 PM (TOk1P)

299 33% would like a new candidate. Wonder what that would mean for voter turn out in the general? Maybe this IS a "different than any other year" election, and ANY candidate can win. Best hope so, because that 33% could easily translate into staying home. And that would be it.

Down ticket is as vital as winning the Presidency, without uncontestable majorities in House and Senate, nothing worthwhile can be accomplished. Can't even let the Dems be spoilers, this time. And from what I see here, it doesn't look too promising.

300 Cool. I'm in with the majority on this one.
I'm ready to embrace the Mitt. And I don't feel good about it.

Okay, here's my new hope for the future scenario:
Mitt picks someone decent for the number two slot and wins the election.
A republican congress picks apart the healthcare bill, wrecking it little by little.
Businesses, seeing the SCOAMF leave office start hiring and expanding, and the entire economy improves.
Romney, after a first term of being battered by the liberals in the media, decides his job is done and passes the mantel to the v p, Rubio, perhaps.

Now, I'm going to have a drink and dwell in the fantasyland I've constructed.

nominate someone on a second vote that never ran in a state's Primary?

My understanding is "yes." The problem, then, becomes selling such a maneuver to the base. It would be much, much easier to select someone who had at least shown up on a couple of primary ballots- and easier still to select someone who'd stayed in for quite a while.

365 One story the Two Partys do NOT want to talk about... is the growing amount of UnAffilated voters out there... State voter rolls show them at 1/3 or more of the Electorate..
.
Repubs try to spin themas Moderate Independents... but they really span the entire spectrum of philosophies... including those of us who have (small l) Libertarian leanings who see the GOP as Statist.
.
If you ask most Americans, they tell you they want smaller government, with NO Government being able to tell people how to live... yet niether party adheres to that principle...
.
Imo its been time for a third Party for a long time... one which Goes back towards the founders vision for this country... one which fights for the America we were all Taught about in school (or at least until the last generation)... one that is there to Protect a Free People... not to enslave them... not to tell them how to live.
.
So... as far as the Repub or Democrat Candidates? The ONLY thing which may get me to vote for the horrible Repub candidates, is that Obama is worse...
.
But it sure does not say much for the current Two Partys, that these are the only choices...

I think we should all just lay back, and think of England.

***************** **************** ************* *******************

This raises an issue I've been struggling with lately? Is conservative government as much of a pipe dream as communism (only with a longer start-to-fail time span)?

It remains ever true that once the citizens of a democracy discover they can vote money to themselves, the jig is up. Is the idea of a government that remains limited inherently impossible, then?

I mean, look as the shit BO has done, UNCONSTITUTIONALLY, and no one has batted an eye. Sure we bitch and gripe, but BO's still there, gay and happy. And appointing officers while the Senate's in session (under the Rule of Law, there are no "gimmicks," adherence to formality is a prerequisite), he's simply open in his disdain of our system of government.

This is a problem now, while it's just some jug-eared fool doing the bidding of his moneyed backers. But what happens when we get a true Caesar? A man both painfully ambitious AND politically ruthless/immoral. There will be such a man in our lifetimes, and then we will have lost it all. A new Pax Romanum except with a globalist leadership.

Great, just great. How can Rule of Law even survive when you have people unwilling to even obey the simplest of rules? From our leaders dow to us, we are spiraling the moral drain.

Yeah, yeah, I'm a fundie loon. Great. But there's no doubt that we are not "free" in any sense of the word. We can't do what we want on our own land (just like the king's forests, except we pay taxes on them ourselves), and we can't even stop criminals from looting our possessions (se VDHs columns).

We're fucked.

And it happened despite the fact that some of the most brilliant political minds in the history of the world devised a system that was supposed to check ambition and limit government intrusion. But nothing can hold up unless people are willing to enforce the rules, not only on others, but on ourselves. Chucking the entire raft of social mores --the Judeo-Christian ethos -- because a few malcontents can't act out their deviant impulses (whatever they are, not singling out any one group here) managed to fuck the entire system in less than 4 generations.

There isn't a "conservative" candidate because it is impossible to conserve something that's gone. Trying to rebuild traditional values gets you sidelong glances from the "hip" who think you're a snake handling fundie, without recognizing that the "fundamental" rules are what kept us free as a nation. I'm guilty of this as well, despite being pretty damn traditional. We have license instead of liberty, and because license is so much more fun (and easy) the hard work of liberty drops away. It will ever be thus.

Once Rome's morals started to decay, they lost the Republic. Here we go again.

373 Identity politics are liberal except when they're not I guess:

Mitt Romney said Wednesday at a “Meet the Candidates” forum sponsored
by Univision that though his father was born in Mexico, he didn’t
consider himself Mexican-American — but he wouldn’t mind if Floridians
thought he was when they cast their ballot in the GOP primary Tuesday.

“I would love to be able to convince people of that, particularly in a
Florida primary,” Romney said when the forum’s moderator Jorge Ramos
asked if the former Massachusetts governor would consider himself the
first Hispanic president if elected, considering that his father was
born south of the border.

“But I think that might be disingenuous on my part because in my case
my dad was born in Mexico and I am proud of my heritage, but he was
born of U.S. citizens who were living in Mexico at the time and was not
Hispanic. He never spoke Spanish nor did his parents, so I can’t claim
that honor. But he lived in Mexico until he was 5 or 6 years old and
then, with revolution in Mexico. his parents and he as a young boy came
back to the United States and settled in the western part of the
country.”

Pressed again by the moderator, who said Romney’s father would be “by
definition” Mexican under that country’s constitution, Romney said he
didn’t think voters would buy it if he went around claiming to be
Mexican-American.

“I don’t think people would think I was being honest with them if I
told them I was Mexican-American but I would appreciate if you would get
that word out,” Romney said.

That John Tyler error has a big ol' factual error in it: Canada became a nation in 1867.

***You're right, Heather. The date the article cites (1841) is the year that Britain changed the former colonies of Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec) into Canada West and Canada East. And 1867 is the year that those colonies and Nova Scotia and New Brunswick formed a confederation as Canada.

390 Those pining for a brokered convention might regret getting what they asked for - especially if a non-establishment candidate is your choice.

123 of the delegates at the convention are chosen from each state's party leaders - folks that have put in the face time and sucked up enough, over time, to rise in the party. At the convention, these folks are non-pledged - they can vote for who they wish.

The remaining 2200 or so delegates are pledged - meaning that for the first vote they must vote the way their state voted in the caucus or primary. If after the first vote no candidate obtains a majority, all delegates are released to vote for whom they wish.

Delegates, as opposed to the average voter, are much more likely to be long-time establishment Rs, and much less likely to be TEA Party folks, given the latter's recent emergence. My guess is that the delegates, left to their own devices, are much more likely to select the "next in line" type of candidate.

Isn't he the only one that has ever defeated the Afgans?
More like "suppressed", but it worked for me."

Suppressing Afghans was sort of like suppressing my farts. The longer I did it, the more the place ultimately stank.

@462

Wouldn't that be a novel thing for Obama to sign.

468 463 It depends on whether the Senate Dems think it will help them in the campaign or not. As for the House, they will be voting on their budget.

469 It's great Seal Team 6 rescued those Americans in Somalia, BUT: WTF are civilian Americans doing anywhere near Somalia?

Posted by: CoolCzech at January 25, 2012 06:06 PM (niZvt)

470 Cool- That's what I thougt too. Same stupidity as those idiots who were "hiking" on the Iraq/Iran border. They should have been Darwin award winners.

471 As a Dittohead and true and pure conservative hero, I feel proud that I've stood inflexibly by my principles and thus for the past couple of decades have helped to elect liberal Democrats to major public offices. As a values voter, I'm proud that I've allowed petty pet peeves to dissuade me from participating in the electoral process, only then to support in other contexts various moral degenerates with vast amounts of my time and attention, thereby putting advertising dollars in the latter's deep pockets. Most of all, as a totally irrational political malcontent I'm proud that no matter how often I beat my empty head against the same brick walls I never learn a single lesson about politics. Consistency is a virtue and I'm consistently an ignorant fool. Palin-Angle-O'Donnell, '16.

472 I don't understand how we got from November 2010 to here. I mean does every prominent conservative politician in America have more skeletons in their closet than Newt Gingrich or were they all just too intimidated by Mitt Romney and his piles of money to give it a shot? In any case do I qualify as dead inside if I spend my quiet moments yearning for the return of Tim Pawlenty? Just last night I tried to make a deal with God, I said I'll give up Thursday drinking (except during football season on weeks when there are NFL games on) and going to Shop-n-Save and sucking the gas out of all the cans of Reddi-Wip if he would just replace Romney with Pawlenty. A pathetic pipe dream I know but I just can't face reality right now, not with all the whippets and xanax in the world.

Ha! Well he did promise last night to sign almost anything Congress slapped on his desk.

That raises the question of what won't you compromise your principles over? And how would anyone know when you'd stand, and when you'd run in the future?

477 soothsayer, why are you not finding an ampersand? There's one in #325 mike "I signed up for AT&T."

478 That primary debate against the generals who had turned on their tribal chiefs and told Genghis about their treachery was a classic. They never expected to be asked what it felt like to die boiling in oil. They had no response! Not an intelligible one, at least. It was a like just a long, "Aaaargggghh ...", which is not really responsive.

479 Because we needed Mike Castle, rock-ribbed RINO, to vote with Scott Brown and the Maine twins against their own party. That would have helped the brand!

484 How about, he's a Republican and he's a decent guy, and he's the most competent?

Is there somewhere a "Conservative Check List?" Maybe Rush can help us there. But I'm pretty sure neither Barry Goldwater nor Ronaldus Magnus would pass todays's test.

....And whatever happened to Rick Savonarola? Is he finally gone?

Posted by: Bobby Ahr at January 25, 2012 09:10 PM (bBAmx)

485 Yep, the libs/dems who are "disappointed" in the president are saying out loud that they would vote for Ron Paul. I don't think he'd go third party because he will think of Rand's future. But he would make a great VP and cause a lot of the libs/dems to have to think about their vote.
