| And Now, The Recriminations: Perry Staffers Tell Tale of Turmoil, Infighting, and A Back-Surgery That Came At A Very Bad TimeHe should have delayed a month, or a month and a half. Was it the decision to schedule back surgery on July 1, putting Perry’s physical recovery on a collision course with a grueling schedule of fundraisers and campaign events? Was it the failure to prepare better for debates that soon turned disastrous? Was it simply a matter of getting in the race too late? Perry’s own string of verbal goofs, probably some of the worst in modern American political history, were so crippling that it is questionable whether any paid professionals could have pulled him out of the ditch. At one point staffers were so desperate to keep Perry’s energy level high during debates that they discussed putting M&Ms in his coat pocket for use during commercial breaks.More on that: But the real problem, from Perry's perspective, was his schedule. Experimental back surgery in July had made it difficult for him to exercise, and exercise helps him sleep. Perry's brisk fundraising pace and lack of sleep left him and first lady Anita Perry — who was much more vocal in the presidential campaign than she had been in past campaigns — to conclude that his schedule should be better managed. You can read the articles for the Johnson and Carney v. Joe Allbaugh stuff. Doesn't seem that interesting, as obviously fingers get pointed, and who knows. So what was Perry doing in October? Apparently not all that much: Politico reported, "In a blistering indictment, sources close to the operation describe a new team that was stunned to arrive in October and find a campaign that wasn't executing the most rudimentary elements of a modern presidential campaign: no polling or focus groups, no opposition research book on their own candidate to prepare for attacks, and debate prep sessions that were barely worth the name."So now you know. Although the articles make a case for this guy or that guy failing Perry, of course failure begins at the top. It might here have also begun at the back. By the way, now that he's out of the race: Yes, that was a horrible, horrible campaign. And yes, he showed up for the debates half-asleep and unprepared. Thanks to @bdomenench, who has a great daily news briefing called The Transom. CommentsPosted by: ShreddyK at January 23, 2012 03:42 PM (7GE2R) 2
Which is too bad. Maybe if he and his people had done a little work it might have been different, but it shows a lack of seriousness.

Perry truly disappointed me. The debates shouldn't be the end all be all... the performance on record should be... but we all know that you can't look like an idiot on TV and get elected.
Perry should have done a much better job of debate prep than this is indicating. His health problems... I can't fault the man for that. That sucks, and it sucks for this country more than it does for Perry, and we are left with candidates who aren't nearly as conservative. But the debate thing... he should have worked on it. He got a LOT better at it late in the game, so I think he was trainable. Posted by: Dustin at January 23, 2012 03:46 PM (8RL8E) 12

I wish Perry had waited al ittle longer to get into the race. When he hopped in I had a feeling it was because everyone had been calling on him to join the race, not because he felt any real urge to run,and I think that showed in his debate performances and his campaign missteps. It was shoddy management up and down the campaign power structure.

Always felt Perry's intentions were pure. His heart was in the right place. I don't think he planned to run for president at all which is why he had his back surgery at a time when he probably thought he could still perform his governmental role but a little more limited since it was the summer. But, someone came along and sold him on the idea of running for president probably couching it on "the country needs you" and perry doesn't seem like the type who would shrink from that kind of responsibility.

As I said in a recent thread here about Perry. I still like Perry the governor, and I still like Perry the potential president, but Perry the candidate sucked. Big time. (shrug) See also Thompson, Fred, another guy I supported and thought would make a great president but who apparently had better things to do with his time.

Blaming the debate prep team -- I don't think that flies. Perry hired them, or hired the guy that hired them, after all.
And that sort of judgment in personnel, and ability to delegate to the right people and monitor their performance -- those are some of the most important parts of the job that is the modern presidency. He probably would have appointed Chuck Norris to Secretary of Defense, if someone forgot to fill his pocket with MMs that morning. Posted by: Pastafarian at January 23, 2012 04:00 PM (p7jpu) 138

Good grief.. I thought my Governor was going to pass out. While everyone laughed and mocked, I was praying for Perry's recovery.
Plus, ince surgery included stem cells, we googled it and found that healing from that procedure causes sever headaches. <-- (what can I say, my daughter is in nursing school to be a RN and we were curious.) @227: But when you jump all over people like in some of those Cain threads, well...that's just a bit raw, esp. when people were saying, "just give him a chance and see if he pulls through", just like Perry's campaign and debate performances, tv spots, etc.
Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at January 23, 2012 04:08 PM (Y5I9o) Actually, considering that Cain just made a joint bid with Colbert, I feel perfectly comfortable with Ace's judgment of his candidacy vis-a-vis Perry's. Posted by: Yoshi, Aggrieved Victim of the White Man at January 23, 2012 04:10 PM (E7NVC) The point isn't about the candidates' ultimate worth; it's about how you treat people who are showing tentative support at an early stage in the primaries. When Cain surged in October, you had people here going full-blown apeshit over anyone who said, "hang on, let's see what he's got". Yeah, you all got to say "I told you so", fine. But that's not a very persuasive or endearing stance. Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at January 23, 2012 04:16 PM (Y5I9o) 257

@278:But when you jump all over people like in some of those Cain threads, well...
That got ugly fast. Those of us trying to point out that sexual harassment suits are largely crap were accused of being in the bag for Cain. All the while our host was so far in the bag he had to look up to see the baloney sandwich. Now, I don't want to fault ace too much, since he was ultimately rigth about Cain's flakiness. I dont' think ace was tearing down Cain because he was "in teh bag" for Perry. There's a difference between attacking as defense of your own candidate, and attacking because you think the candidate sucks. It's kind of like the subtle difference between liking Gingrich because he forcefully pushes back against media narratives (thereby indicating a willingness to do so for all issues), and liking Gingrich because you're some stupid angry wingnut who just wants to see the media burn. A brief inexpensively-produced post mortemdocumentary of this and otherfailed campaign clusterfucks would be interesting. I would like to see the interviews done with a reddish flickering glow in the background, plus alow-volume audiotape playing of the wailing of doomed tortured souls.
But of course, nobody in their right mind would cooperatewith a documentary. The'professional staff'only whisper and leak anonymously/off the recorddefensively totry and save their political hack careers. (See:Aftermath ofMcCain/Palin ticket.) So maybe find people not in their right minds. Yeah, they'll talk. A lot. And you just know any campaign isloaded withthem. Well here's a point that's worth considering: Look at why people in teh Tea Party like Chris Christie. By all accounts he's not a True Conservative (TM), and he's a huge supporter of Romney. So what gives? They like him because he came out and forcefully "spoke truth to power" to the teachers' union. And it worked. And while it's debatable how similar Newt is to Christie overall, the fact is that their strategies of calling out common Liberal tropes and punching back twice as hard are pretty much the same.

I've always contended the Tea Party is not a cohesive thing. It's basically a conglomerate of protest votes. In fact, a lot of people in the movement are/were Democrats who were/are fed up with Obama and the libs in Congress who were going along with the Obama plan. They may very well abandon the Republican Party if it doesn't seem to be responsive to them, and certainly there are some more liberal Repubs, like Christie, who appeal to the movement precisely for the reasons you suggest. I think that's a good poitn. It's kind of tiresome to hear everyone rip on the Tea Party, since it often turns out that "tea party" just means something like "whoever disagrees with my masterful grand plan". I guess if the primary aim of the coalition is just to be left alone and not to have to participate in the inside baseball of politics, then it would make sense that they seem like inconsistent, incoherent, irrational brutes to people who are trying to win political victories by careful consideration and pundit-oriented gamesmanship. A treat today, listening to mark levin without many interruptions. But, the thought occurred to me today while re watching governor christie and annie go all out against newt gingrich yesterday that the republican party is going to split. There is no way they can fix this divide. If a republican governor like christie is willing to sell another republican who could possibly end up being his party's nominee down the river as effectively as he did, I don't know if that is reparable. I don't know if Christie could ever walk that one back. The same is probably tree for the attacks on bain capital which were perceived as attacks on capitalism itself. Now they have mitigated this but not completely, it's still in the back of everyone's mind. But Christie's comments were really volatile for a sitting governor. It's one thing for beck and annie to mouth off, they are allegedly journalists, but a sitting governor? And you know I like Chris Christie. The only thing I can think of is that he was promised the VP slot if mittens is the nominee otherwise why else would he have done that.
I mean even Jeb Bush decided endorsing any of them right now wasn't worth the political capital. Posted by: ambrosia at January 23, 2012 06:28 PM (oZfic) 545
I'm reminded of President Bush the elder's campaign when he was really, really sick most of the election season and spent it at home in the White House. That's the year he puked on the Japanese Prime Minster. he was a shoo-in for reelection and just didn't even try really.

Obviously whoever wrote this has never seen Joe Biden in action. Or Barack Obama, for that matter. Or Nancy Pelosi. Etc. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at January 23, 2012 06:47 PM (i0App) 555
I was never big on Perry cause he was from Texas. I took everyone's word that he would make a good president. He seems like a good person. But coupled with the back surgery which I mentioned and the fact that he is another texan I thought it wouldn't fly.
But I don't understand all the vitriol after the fact. I thought perry's exit speech, like his entrance speech was fabulous. I thought he gave a lot of clues as to what's coming and what he believes and thinks. I mean Michelle Bachman and Herman Cain left and endorsed no one. Perry left and he endorsed Gingrich. He must have some very very good reasons for doing so. And then having Sarah Palin come out and say "hey, it ain't over dummies" and thinking they are friends. Makes you think that to them what is important is, how did perry put it, greater than one man (woman). As time goes on I wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the republicans are eating one another alive in front of the entire nation. Will the last man standing be able to be effective once this is all over knowing the penchant the present occupant has for being lucky enough to have often run unopposed. Hmm I didn't even think about the business of wanting to run in 2016, you are probably right. I really like Christie but I was really disappointed in him yesterday. I know he jumped on the romney band wagon early and wants to save face. But sometimes it's better to just be "otherwise engaged" when the media calls. Posted by: ambrosia at January 23, 2012 06:58 PM (oZfic) 557
It's pretty bad when a conservative blog has to use articles from a far left wing rag like the Austin American-Statesman or a George Soros funded publication like the Texas Tribune without a caveat explaining both to the readers here. And no, Ace, Perry did not show up at the debates half asleep. He showed up in great pain from back surgery because hey, soldiers buck it up and make the best of a bad situation. But never mind that we are now saddled with a Northeastern statist or a man who rails on the "elite establishment" that he was part of for two decades. We are soooooooooooooo screwed. Listen up, chumps, if someone don't have the word "former" before their title there's no way in Hades that I'll support him. If you're holding public office that just means you're part of the problem and not part of the finalsolution. I'm tired of losing slower. I want to win never.
