He should have delayed a month, or a month and a half.
Was it the decision to schedule back surgery on July 1, putting Perry’s physical recovery on a collision course with a grueling schedule of fundraisers and campaign events? Was it the failure to prepare better for debates that soon turned disastrous? Was it simply a matter of getting in the race too late? Perry’s own string of verbal goofs, probably some of the worst in modern American political history, were so crippling that it is questionable whether any paid professionals could have pulled him out of the ditch. At one point staffers were so desperate to keep Perry’s energy level high during debates that they discussed putting M&Ms in his coat pocket for use during commercial breaks.More on that:
But the real problem, from Perry's perspective, was his schedule. Experimental back surgery in July had made it difficult for him to exercise, and exercise helps him sleep. Perry's brisk fundraising pace and lack of sleep left him and first lady Anita Perry — who was much more vocal in the presidential campaign than she had been in past campaigns — to conclude that his schedule should be better managed.You can read the articles for the Johnson and Carney v. Joe Allbaugh stuff. Doesn't seem that interesting, as obviously fingers get pointed, and who knows. So what was Perry doing in October? Apparently not all that much:
Politico reported, "In a blistering indictment, sources close to the operation describe a new team that was stunned to arrive in October and find a campaign that wasn't executing the most rudimentary elements of a modern presidential campaign: no polling or focus groups, no opposition research book on their own candidate to prepare for attacks, and debate prep sessions that were barely worth the name."So now you know. Although the articles make a case for this guy or that guy failing Perry, of course failure begins at the top. It might here have also begun at the back. By the way, now that he's out of the race: Yes, that was a horrible, horrible campaign. And yes, he showed up for the debates half-asleep and unprepared. Perry should have done a much better job of debate prep than this is indicating.
His health problems... I can't fault the man for that. That sucks, and it sucks for this country more than it does for Perry, and we are left with candidates who aren't nearly as conservative.
But the debate thing... he should have worked on it. He got a LOT better at it late in the game, so I think he was trainable.

Agreed. Perry could have done a lot better, but for the most part, it was the bad judgment of the "heartless" comment and a few other soundbites that really got the ball rolling.

It's one thing to promote your own guy and cover over his flaws--that's how the game is played. But when you jump all over people like in some of those Cain threads, well...that's just a bit raw, esp. when people were saying, "just give him a chance and see if he pulls through", just like Perry's campaign and debate performances, tv spots, etc.

I'm repeating myself, but Perry didn't skeeve me with his "heartless" comment. I actually agree with that, much to the detriment of my popularity around here.
What ticked me off about it was that I felt like he was trying to preen, or to play up to the media. A hard and fast rule ought to be Never sell out your base in hopes you'll get media love. If you have a bone to pick with your base, do it when the cameras of the enemy aren't rolling.

The point isn't about the candidates' ultimate worth; it's about how you treat people who are showing tentative support at an early stage in the primaries. When Cain surged in October, you had people here going full-blown apeshit over anyone who said, "hang on, let's see what he's got". Yeah, you all got to say "I told you so", fine. But that's not a very persuasive or endearing stance.

Now, I don't want to fault ace too much, since he was ultimately rigth about Cain's flakiness. I dont' think ace was tearing down Cain because he was "in teh bag" for Perry. There's a difference between attacking as defense of your own candidate, and attacking because you think the candidate sucks.
It's kind of like the subtle difference between liking Gingrich because he forcefully pushes back against media narratives (thereby indicating a willingness to do so for all issues), and liking Gingrich because you're some stupid angry wingnut who just wants to see the media burn.

I've always contended the Tea Party is not a cohesive thing. It's basically a conglomerate of protest votes. In fact, a lot of people in the movement are/were Democrats who were/are fed up with Obama and the libs in Congress who were going along with the Obama plan.
They may very well abandon the Republican Party if it doesn't seem to be responsive to them, and certainly there are some more liberal Repubs, like Christie, who appeal to the movement precisely for the reasons you suggest.

I think that's a good poitn. It's kind of tiresome to hear everyone rip on the Tea Party, since it often turns out that "tea party" just means something like "whoever disagrees with my masterful grand plan". I guess if the primary aim of the coalition is just to be left alone and not to have to participate in the inside baseball of politics, then it would make sense that they seem like inconsistent, incoherent, irrational brutes to people who are trying to win political victories by careful consideration and pundit-oriented gamesmanship.

But I don't understand all the vitriol after the fact. I thought perry's exit speech, like his entrance speech was fabulous. I thought he gave a lot of clues as to what's coming and what he believes and thinks. I mean Michelle Bachman and Herman Cain left and endorsed no one. Perry left and he endorsed Gingrich. He must have some very very good reasons for doing so. And then having Sarah Palin come out and say "hey, it ain't over dummies" and thinking they are friends. Makes you think that to them what is important is, how did perry put it, greater than one man (woman).
As time goes on I wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the republicans are eating one another alive in front of the entire nation. Will the last man standing be able to be effective once this is all over knowing the penchant the present occupant has for being lucky enough to have often run unopposed.

I still think that on paper, Perry was the best candidate. He should have waited one more month to fully recover from his surgery.
