Marines May Face Prosecution For Peeing On Corpses

The real crime was the felony stupid of videotaping it.

A lot of people seem upset by this. I think it's upsetting that now these guys are probably going to get cashiered over a stupid act. But the act itself doesn't really upset me.

The whole point of a rule against corpse desecration is that you show respect and honor to the fallen one. But what if that fallen one had been trying to kill you not ten minutes before, and in fact you had killed him before he killed you?

It's not that suddenly you're permitted to pee on the corpse. The point is that they natural sympathy for a dead person that most people would feel is entirely absent in this case -- in fact, you feel something pretty close to hate; I'm not sure there's any other way you can feel about a terrorist dirtbag who was just trying to kill you and your friends -- so you're not naturally going to feel that you should treat the corpse with respect.

Your training and discipline should kick in to supplement that and keep you from doing this, but your natural moral sense isn't there. Because, seriously, the hell with this terrorist.

In addition, people who don't see corpses very often are naturally reverential about them. Awestruck to see what death looks like. Those who see it frequently lose that, almost just as a coping strategy. The first dead body a medical student sees might be cause to contemplate the mortality of man; the tenth dead body and jokes start occurring to him, like spinning around in surprise and accusing the corpse of grabbing his ass.

This happens, and yet those guys aren't monsters. They're just dealing with dead bodies every day.

Likewise these Marines aren't monsters. They don't have the advantage most civilians do, of being unfamiliar with corpses and hence a little awestruck by them. They see this a fair amount.

Nonetheless, this was certainly stupid, and bad for their fellow troops, both in terms of exciting the enemy and disrespecting the uniform of the Corps. They'll probably be ejected from the Corps, which is probably a good thing, since their discipline and judgement seem to be lacking. They also seem to have put their own hijinks above the Corps and their fellow Marines.

I don't have a huge *moral* problem. I have a practical problem. What they did was stuck on stupid, and they should pay a price on those terms. No criminal sentence, because they didn't do anything wrong. But cashiered, probably.

I can walk and chew gum at the same time:

1) These marines should not have done this. They also should not have video taped it.

2) Let's not freak out over this. They are in a very high stress environment, let's cut them some slack.

Watching the left go bonkers over this is ridiculous. This is warfare and things like this happen. It is unfortunate, but get some damn perspective.

13 You know what? When you're an "ambassador" for your country (and that's what they always told us in ROTC, Sig Officer school, etc.), then you have a fiduciary duty to your country. That means, if peeing on corpses is going to negatively reflect on your country, YOU DON'T FUCKING DO IT, no matter how many of your friends the subhumans killed. Why? Because it's going to make your country look bad (or at least have to do damage control).

Yeah, and videotaping is proof that you are too dumb to serve.

17 I think you're right about the Conservative reaction to this- what they did was stupid and they shouldn't have done it, but to get cashiered for it? Really?

OTOH: If they don't get disciplined (and since they were stupid enough to video tape this and post it, that discipline MUST be public), I'm not sure what else the military can do.

Anything less will seem like a "don't get caught, next time" response- which is not a terribly helpful reputation to have when attempting to deal with the indigenous population, I'd imagine.

27 Another point is that people under the acute stress of combat who are surrounded by so much death and carnage tend to develop a pretty macabre sense of humor as a response to the horror they are immersed in, and will naturally do things like this that people not in their position will not understand or interpret as inhumane and horrific. They are if they are products of a flawed personality, and there are people like that. These marines are not among them however. They are victims of acute stress which will develop into PTSD if not treated. This kind of behavior will happen regularly if they are not adequately supervised and treated for their stress.

31 dan-O, Empire,

That's my take, pretty much. I don't want to form a Shame Circle to ritually denounce them, or to make them some kind of Internet Villains.

But yeah, if you're Felony Stupid enough to videotape propaganda for the enemy, and evidence of your own court-martial-level misbehavior, you probably don't have the judgment and sense to be an effective trooper for the Marines.

That said, I get it. People who are all upset about disrespecting a corpse are, I'm pretty sure, people no one's attempted to kill. I imagine this is a difference chiefly of *experience*, not morality.

It's not that they lack morality. It's that they have an experience we don't, and that makes them think about things a little different.

But they fell down on the code, so, as a professional matter, they need professional discipline.

I guess that's my feeling here, that there's a difference between professional discipline and a kind of personalized shaming and crying out "Oh what monsters have we become?"

Because seriously if anyone attempts to kill me, and I somehow manage to kill him in return, that guy's getting pissed on, for starters.

I don't have training to restrain me. If I somehow make it out of that situation by some asshole who tried to kill me, there's going to be some abuse of corpse going on, at least unless I can start thinking about how it will look in front of a jury.

nonsense. "Respect for the dead" isn't some absolute. None of you guys respect Osama bin Ladin; why should a marine respect one of Osama's henchmen, who just tried to kill him?

There is no inborn sense that a scumbag killer ought to be respected in death. There is only an ethic -- a man-made code imposed upon the psyche -- that says so.

Vietnam forever changed the way in which we have to conduct warfare because it brought the war home in a way-to civilians-right in their living room.

There's an old saying:

War is ugly.

Essentially you are asking young men to break the social norms...

Anyways-we've had to change the methodology of warfare to conform with that reality.

Some ask the question:

Why can't we just carpet bomb the hell out of _____ ?

Well because of the very real change that media has brought to warfare.

It's necessitated "precision" bombing and the like.

Now let's multiply that effect-

the camera and video is literally everywhere and it's going to exasperate the above ten fold.

It would have been okay by me. Unwise but not morally blameworthy.

You know I worked in a hospital and occasionally had to move corpses in high school. The first couple of times you're all reverential and asking people "Is it okay to do x?" Because your inborn sense is to treat the corpse with some kind of special respect.

By the eighth time you're just moving a mass and being grateful it's a thin old woman rather than a fat man.

I went camping with a group once and one of the campers was a local cop.
He was telling us a story how desensitized to death they become.
He gave us a story of a man who was run over, got caught on the bottom of a car, and was dragged and torn apart for over a mile. Just a man out walking. A father, a son, a brother, etc. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The guy who was telling this story said he was first on the scene and that the first thing the second cop to arrive said to him was, "who ordered the pizza."
It seemed heartless, cruel and sad to me, but I don't see that stuff daily. It's new to me, but a weekly occurence to them.
The point being it's hard to judge someone in that situation, because I have no experience. I have no evidence of how I would act if I were in their shoes. In all likelihood, I would probably end up the same way.

My old man was a Marine Combat Vet in Korea. This incident pales in comparison to the stories he used to tell me of what happened in that war. I once asked him, how he felt at the time these things were going on and he said that you can't view what happens in combat with the same eyes that you look on things in a safe and structured environment like we have here in America.
He told me that making judgements while setting in your favorite chair in the peace of your fully climate controlled home is an entire other universe from the nightmare of war. He ended with the statement that in his experience in combat, an individual must develop moral flexibility in order to operate, even though his entire upbringing and culture would direct the oposite. My old man was a hard ass but he wasn't evil. Either are these Marines.

I dont' think it's the era that's PC. Patton got heat for slapping that soldier, right?

Well, I'm just speculating, but to me it is partly the PC era. The folks in the chain of command have to seem all outrageously outraged because (as you point out) there's a video out there of the stupid act. I doubt that they would have made a big issue out of it had there not been a video.

Of course one could also argue that it is really a serious thing for them to broadcast what they did in terms of increased risk to marines by pissing off the enemy. (I'm not sure how much I believe that in this case because the enemy seem to need no provocation to act like savages.)

I don't know the details of Patton and slapping his soldier, but it seems to me there are good reasons that the military has (and had, I think) rules of conduct between officers and enlisted that have to do with maintaining effective command, not political correctness.

I see the difference. Do you see the difference between a corpse who never did you wrong and a terrorist motherfucker who not ten minutes before was trying to kill you and your friends?

Virtue untested is no virtue at all. I tend to discount statements that begin, "Well if *I* were in this situation--" yeah you're not. You can only tell me what you'd hope you'd do or not do.

The point of respecting a corpse is to show honor to the dead person, and his family.

Okay -- what if you actually have absolutely no respect for that dead person and probably not his terrorist-breeding family, either?

There's another line in law: The rule exists for a reason. Where the reason ends, so does the rule.

Now in this case the rule continued extending -- but as a matter of ethics (the Code), not as a matter of respecting a terrorist scumbag out of innate reverence.

No, cops don't whiz on dead bodies. But those dead guys weren't trying to kill them. Still, they make jokes about the dead, sometimes the innocent dead.

They're not giving the bodies the "respect" which is urged. Is that because they're immoral scum? Or is it more likely that people in professions that deal with dead bodies frequently quickly lose the taboos about death?

Most people have never seen a corpse who wasn't a family member, and those (thankfully) rarely. If you're dealing with them every week, the taboos just aren't there. Thus the med student who puts a dead body's hand on his junk and says "This corpse is trying to grab my shit!!!"

Agree, normally I wouldn't think twice, but for some reason the urination was more off putting to me than if they had say, spat on the bodies, kicked it, rolled it down a hill or cut the head off and used it as a beach ball. All of which I would have been fine with.

O/T but kind of related. Last week we had a terrible thing happen in Ogden, UT where a warrant was being served on a suspected drug dealer. It was supposed to be routine, but the guy opened fire on the officers. Killed one and seriously injured 5 or 6 others.

Amazingly, the perp is not dead and not even all that seriously injured. That's some tremendous self-control on the part of the officers.

190 I don't give a damn about dead terrorist and in general prefer a more aggressive war which would mean more collateral, innocent deaths.

That said, one of the reasons for strict enforcement of rules like this is not to show honor to the dead, but to convince the still living Afghans that we have respect for them so they are more cooperative with us.

To be honest, I don't think that's completely necessary for Afghans since they live by the code that allows you to do anything to your enemies. So I think the average Afghan totally understands what the Marines did and would do something much worse to somebody who tried to kill them.

But I think, practically, rules like this are to prevent giving the enemy propaganda material they can use to turn the civilian population against you.

I saw this nonsense yesterday at Andrews Sullivan's site:
"Debra Cassens Weiss compiles evidence suggesting that the episode qualifies as a war crime." Andrew Sullivan, What War Does To Soliders, 12 Jan 2012 06:40 PM
Really? A few Marines (who probably lost buddies to the Taliban) doing what they did constitutes a war crime? Are people mad? To even suggest such a thing is a war crime is insane.
I am not condoning it. It was a stupid thing to do. It could potentially disrupt the mission (and filming it?). But people need to react appropriately to something like this. This is, at worse, a situation that warrants some discipline action at a unit level (such as an NCO telling them "don't do this again or you will be charged.").

210 I'm having a hard time getting worked up over this. Stuff like this has been happening in war as long as there has been war. Yes, they exercised poor judgment in video taping it. Yes, Americans think we should be better than this. But, I'll be damned if I'm going to judge these guys over it from the comfort of my nice warm office where I work everyday with nary a person trying to shoot me or blow me up with a fucking IED. I can't even imagine what that's like and neither can the media pansies who are manufacturing outrage about this.

So yeah, it was wrong. It was even stupid. Is it enough that otherwise good Marines should be discharged or court martialed over it? I don't think so. 90 days of peeling potatoes and cleaning latrines? Maybe.

250 The only reason that any of the Muzzies or the Liberals are outraged over this is because we on the conservative side - who do have a sense of morality - are outraged and they are playing up to it.

Remember when The Cleric Al Sadr in Iran killed a bunch of women and children in the hope of blaming it on us? Neither the Muslims or the Liberals cared about that at all. Do you really think they care about some Marines peeing on dead Taliban? Please - it is just "Never let a crisis go to waste".

It really does depend on how it gets processed. Someone up thread said he's in a JAG unit, I don't want to suggest I know how automatic it is, but I would think if they're court martialed and discharged, that's a completely different classification than if they are given a medical discharge for psychological reasons.
I think you could have a situation where, say a guy slugs an officer. In one unit they prosecute him and he's screwed for life out of VA and other benefits. In another unit they send him to a shrink, then the full force of military/VA medical evaluations take place, and we give him a discharge with 100% disability benefits.

273 You're right on about the training and discipline. I have a son in the infantry, and I am sure that training and discipline were key factors to his survival in several instances. I also know that part of his "training" included humilating and unnecessary mistreatment by his lower level "leadership". I have seen the photographs that show this, and was informed that JAG officers showed up to investigate. Nevertheless, perhaps the seeds had been planted by that poor leadership, because it was during his last tour that soldiers from his former platoon were lead (literally) to commit murders for which they are currently in prison or are being prosecuted. I thank God that my son was not part of that, but if he had followed the career "advice" of that leadership, he would have been.

Muslims:
1. behead living captives, combatant or not;
2. practice female genital mutilation as a generally accepted practice;
3. stone rape victims for adultry
4. promote and perform regular honor (oxymoron here) killings for a plethora of reasons

American:
1. Don't kill captives at all (well generally)
2. Give captives food, water, shelter, medical care, a FRIGGIN Koran
3. Build roads, schools, hospitals, and power generation with American DEBT

Tell me. Who is the barbarian, and who cares about pissing a dead guy.

Posted by: haavamaal at January 13, 2012 12:58 PM (3032/)

286 First, some disclosure: I served in the Army, but I had a desk job.
"The whole point of a rule against corpse desecration is that you show respect and honor to the fallen one."
This is a Western concept, and a rather late one at that. Some other cultures may show respect to corpses, but in their own way; examination of heads in Feudal Japan comes to mind.
But other cultures The Taliban, Al Q., and other Islamic terrorists; what respect do they show corpses? I remember Mogadishu, and an incident involving a bridge in Iraq, Christian girls in Indonesia, ... these actions were meant to send various messages tarious audiences.
"Your training and discipline should kick in to supplement that and keep you from doing this, but your natural moral sense isn't there. Because, seriously, the hell with this terrorist."
This might be true; I no longer remember. But at some point, sending a reciprocal message to the enemy is needed.
I suspect that there was no outrage by the Taliban and accomplices when this news broke, because they understood the message, as did all of the other players in the area. It worked, and only when Leon Panetta took action did the message fail, and the Taliban start whining.

294 As to war crimes.

The Taliban are committing war crimes since they are combatants in a war - not wearing uniforms on the battle field. It is legal to summarily execute them when captured because of that.

Did it ever occur to any of you that maybe the Marines thought the Taliban were thirsty - so they tested the water first by drinking it and making sure it was safe before they gave it to the enemy?

The rest of the platoon eventually caught the sniper. Turned out to be a German kid about 16 years old. They skinned him and then pissed on him before they put one in his head. The old guy telling the story wasn't bragging, just telling the story. He didn't seem proud of what they had done, it was just something that happened. 315 ugh.

The stakes are so high for these guys. They are asked to kill or be killed. The emotions that creates are powerful. They know friends who are dead. They know the friend's daughters and think of their own sons.

And still show up to kill or be killed because we ordered them, as a country to do it.

And so when they make a mistake, sometimes it's a very ugly mistake. How do you communicate your disgust with a terrorist who wanted to kill your friends? If you're in control of your emotions and military discipline, you can't do it and you just deal with that.

These guys should be punished, but not in the dog and pony way that is BS foreign policy. Their lives shouldn't be ruined just so Obama and Hillary can prove a point. They should be permitted to continue doing their jobs. Take rank, take pay, put them on extra duty, and allow them to continue being Marines. Don't put these guys in prison or kick them out of their jobs for what amounts to a lapse of discipline.

THIS IS WHEN A LEADER CAN PROVE SOMETHING ABOUT HIMSELF. Standing up for the armed forces right now would earn President Obama respect. He'd be paying a price for those who are always paying the price.

And he doesn't have it in him to do that, I imagine. This is where the difference between the weaker, more ruthless, less principled leaders comes into play.

We are fighting a 7th century death cult with strong superstitions about the cleanliness of burial rituals. If thinking they may get the eternal golden shower makes them hesitate or choose a different course of action then it would be a job well done.

In fact I think we should hire prostitutes to fill bottles with urine that we can ship overseas to make sure that each of these little benighted little cretins get their own special ration. If they are going to ascribe to these ridiculous and barbaric beliefs we should at least use it against them.

320 Honestly whizzing on Taliban corpses doesn't concern me much. They shouldn't have filmed it and they ought to be punished for being that damned idiotic, but like others have said: shooting and exploding people to death = fine, but pissing on them = unforgivable?

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at January 13, 2012 03:26 PM (r4wIV)

321 The pissing troops should be punished. Now USA is even more hated. Pissing on dead bodies? USA is supposed to be a civilized nation. This is barbaric. We now have more people who HATE the USA.

332 The point is that they natural sympathy for a dead person that most
people would feel is entirely absent in this case -- in fact, you feel
something pretty close to hate; I'm not sure there's any other way you
can feel about a terrorist dirtbag who was just trying to kill you and
your friends -- so you're not naturally going to feel that you should treat the corpse with respect.

Terrorists, which is what the Taliban basically are, are fighters without honor. A lack of honor deserves no honor in return.

334 This is bullshit and the commanders not supporting their Marines is bigger bullshit. The Taliban behead people, fer cryin' out loud.

What an f'n lack of perspective.

Posted by: Arms Merchant at January 13, 2012 11:09 PM (+XVQe)

335 I would support punishment for these Marines if our enemies were held to the same standard. But they're not. Not even by they're own cult members.

So I suggest we start dumping every drop of piss made in America all over the Muslim world, on a daily basis. When they complain, we can just say "Hey, you quit pissing on us, and we'll quit pissing on you." Ironically, this is exactly how the Democrats feel about international trade, or "fair trade" as they call it.

337 Peeing on the tubes to cool them off so you can keep putting rounds on the enemy - innovative

Peeing on their dead bodies after you killed them...

338 I won't watch any suck video. On the other hand, that's exactly what I would have done. Moreover, before loading my mags, I would have dipped each and every meplat in lard or the next best thing. They cut off our heads, marry their cousins, and have temporary "marriages" with little kids. In contrast, when ya gotta drain it, ya gotta drain it. The political action as a result may be the most important indicator of who's in charge in our country, us or them.

340 Was the photographer a mole, monitoring troop actions?

This comes after Biden's, 'not necessary our enemies' comment.. And don't forget, Libs run Media Propaganda.

Liberal/Marxist's dynamic is never letting a crisis go to waste... And (to me) this looks like triangulation (bad them/good us) as BO Admin faces a collapse in negotiations with the Taliban.

342 “Dear Taliban,

We, the Armed Forces of the United States of America, sincerely apologize for the incident in which Forces of the United States Marine Corps desecrated the deceased bodies of your comrades in arms. It is a desecration that we do not condone or authorize. All of our armed forces are trained to respect the dead, even the dead of the enemy, and to, if possible, give them a proper burial as befitting the deceased’s culture and standing.

We stand ready to give each and every one of you a proper and respectful burial upon your demise, and foreswear, now and forever, that we will not desecrate your dead after we blow them to itty bitty bits. We promise.

Of course it would all be much easier for us to give you a proper and respectful burial if you would all put your guns to your heads and pull the trigger. Repeat if necessary.

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

The Armed Forces of the United States of America.”
