Ron Paul In 1995: Hey, I've Got These Awesome Newsletters That Explain My Philosophy!

Video and transcript at Hot Air.

Paul's story has changed on the letters, of course. First he defended them and offered the standard "taken out of context" defense, but did not hint that anyone apart from the signed author calling himself "I" ("I," as in "I, Ron Paul") wrote them.

In 1996, Paul told TheDallas Morning News that his comment about black men in Washington came while writing about a 1992 study by the National Center on Incarceration and Alternatives, a criminal justice think tank in Virginia.
Paul cited the study and wrote: "Given the inefficiencies of what DC laughingly calls the criminal justice system, I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal."

"These aren't my figures," Paul told the Morning News. "That is the assumption you can gather from the report."

Nor did Paul dispute in 1996 his 1992 newsletter statement that said,"If you have ever been robbed by a black teenaged male, you know how unbelievably fleet of foot they can be."

Now, Paul says he had nothing to do with the contents of the newsletters published in his name.

"Why don't you go back and look at what I said yesterday on CNN and what I've said for 20-something years, 22 years ago?" Paul said on CNN Wednesday. "I didn't write them. I disavow them. That's it." Paul then removed his microphone and abruptly ended the interview.

Later more of this stuff (which had not been extensively archived; these were 8-page conspiratorial newsletters) emerged, and the new claim was that he hadn't written them at all -- he hadn't even read them! -- and he said some nonsense like "Of course I couldn't admit I didn't write them last time, that was during a campaign."

Oh. So, if I have this right, Ron Paul admits he lies about the newsletters in the midst of a campaign in which he cannot tell the truth for political reasons.

So I guess I'll just take this new claim to the bank and use it as solid gold collateral for a ten million dollar loan which I will use to invest in silver and gold mines.

Here are 50 scans of Ron Paul's newsletters. Scan down a bit and a 1990 Ron Paul Political Report will inform you that this handsome, dashing young upstart, name of David Duke, lately of the Klan and the Neo-Nazi movement, has some good political chops and is worth keeping an eye on. Kid's got a future in the Republican Party!

UN assembly plans moment of silence for Kim Jong-il
Published: 12.22.11, 21:38 / Israel News

The UN General Assembly granted a request from North Korea to hold a moment of silence Thursday for Kim Jong-il, the country's former leader who died Saturday, though Western envoys said they would boycott it.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the 193-nation General Assembly, said the moment of silence would take place before a meeting of the assembly. (Reuters)

39 To be fair, I believe that some of his newsletters probably did include material written by others; Lew Rockwell has been credibly mentioned.

That said, his claim that he didn't know who was writing them, what was in them, and bears no responsibility for them is beyond ridiculous.

He could've simply apologized back in 2007. At the very least, he allowed such views to be printed under his banner through lack of judgement or oversight. Had he done so, this would've been a non-issue by now.

But no. Ron Paul- like all cult leaders- can never, ever admit being wrong about anything, for they are infallible truth tellers incapable of error.

This whole thing is a non issue. Dr. Walter E.Williams supports Paul, and that's well enough for me. To call Paul is a racist can't be called anything other than a lie.
1) It's highly questionable whether Paul authored this matherial to begin with.
2) Even if he did, the material isn't racist, but rather politically incorrect.
3) This was 15-20 years ago, what about the stuff the other candidates are saying NOW.
It's shameful that "conservatives" would be lowering themselves to these types of liberal tactics. Don't agree with Paul, fine, bring substance. Argue against his position on the economy, spending, the fed, foreign policy, whatever. Give a substantive reason for why X position is wrong. This nonsense is just pathetic.
Let the voters honestly decide based on positions. The problem is the establishment is deathly afraid of Paul. Paul's foreign policy positions are gaining traction and even though admittedly he has a very small chance of actually winning, his message will carry on. They know this, it will haunt them. So, instead of debating with substance they have to attack the messenger. No better than the Democrats and ACORN running around.

Couple weeks ago after one of Ace's anti-Paul blog posts I sent him an email. He replied and we have a little bit of a private exchange about Paul. The best argument he could come up with against Paul is to give me a video where Noam Chomsky was a guest on some political talk show discussing the concept of blowback in response to a GOP debate where Paul brought up 9/11 and blowback. My response was along the lines, "So if Noam Chomsky likes to eat oranges I'm sure you'll boycott them." No response.
Still, do date, not a single substantive argument against Paul. NOT ONE.

Paul refuses to do so. Only some of them are still findable -- these were trashy 8-page newsletters. And those who are his biggest fans might have them saved, but they won't turn them over, because it could hurt him.

The ones that have been found were archived by a Kansas library and a Wisconsin historical society.

Show me the racism, jew-hatred, etc... show me. Please, show me, show the world all of this. If you can actually show these things, I WOULD AGREE WITH YOU. What about that don't you get?
Foreign-aid is either constitutional or it isn't. Which is it? Show me where in the Constitution or any of its history foreign aid is authorized?
Are you for or against the Constitution and the rule of law or not? Yes or No.
If you think we should be engaging in foreign aid then pass a constitutional amendment that authorizes it.
REGARDLESS, being against financially supporting the State of Israel isn't racist. How in the world is that racist? What kind of fascist even says something like that? "If you don't support me then you're a racist" You can't even make the argument Paul is against the State of Israel itself. He was the one defending them in the 80's against Iraq, lol.
Chamberlain-on-steroids? Again another remark with no facts to back it up. Chamberlain was an appeaser. Paul is non-interventionist, not a non-repelling-other-interventionists. You don't seem to grasp the difference. Where has your intervention gotten you? Where is Mubarak that we invested all those tens of billions of dollars in. Oh, that's right, he's gone, being replaced by Islamists, great job. How is that intervention working out for you? I highly doubt you've even passed through airports in that part of the world as a tourist. You don't have even a basic fundamental grasp of what's going on over there... so how in the world can you claim to know matter-of-factly the intricate ramifications of our involvement?
Go lookup the defintion of SUBSTANCE... that means something must be there. Your statements are HOLLOW. All you've done is say what you think about Paul without any facts to back it up whatsoever.

164 I cannot be expected to know the contents of all the term papers I wrote in college that bear my name.

You do realize those term papers were regularly 5-10 pages, right? I was a one man media empire. I churned out several of those a semester. That's easily 20+ pages per semester.

To be honest I have no idea who even wrote those. Was it me? It had my name and was in my handwriting, but that's not definitive proof. Maybe it was me, maybe it was somebody using anecdotes from my life and putting out creative writing pieces in my name.

And this was years ago. And I disavow anything that should be disavowed, like when I said the Portugese are a mongrel race who deserve to be exterminated. I didn't mean we should start doing it immediately. It was just a conversation starter. Plus, I didn't even write it.

I don't see why people keep harping on the things written in my name, with my handwriting, where I discuss details of my life. It's old news, I disavowed it, and it never happened in the first place. Come on!

In summary. Liberty, constitution, Ron Paul. I win the debate!

"Thanks for your service, but sometimes people who say they served and seem to be pumping that up, are not believed. Unfortunately, some people steal valor."
And those people should be rightly dealt with, and always are. I have only brought up my experience in the Middle East as a context for related discussions. I have made no specific claims, won't, and don't mean to puff anything up.

Paul aside, all the other candidates and GOP at large are extremelly anti-Muslim and paint a very (incredibly, wildly)ignorant picture of the Middle East. In that regard, I think it's highly relevant whether one has actually been there and seen it for themselves. I've got some internet clown (who I'm also probably one) telling me all Muslims are evil and we should genocide them... ok, has that person ever been to the Middle East? 99.9999% of the time, no.
Paul's position is characterized as anti-American and "blaming" America for 9/11, which it absolutely isn't. All Paul has said is that it's important to understand who the enemy is and what their true motives are. We have been told they hate us "because of who are are" and "because of our freedoms," which is absolute poppycock.
If you think the intervention is a good thing, fine, but that discussion, if an honest one, should also include the realistic consequences. Al Qaeda didn't attack because we are free, they attacked because of our involvement in the Middle East, specifically our support of the despotic regimes controlling it. And that's 100% completely true.
That in of itself isn't to saywe shouldn't support X despot. Maybe there is a valid argument for supporting them... but what is that argument? What is the reason? And the on-the-ground consequences should be considered. Is the possibility of terrorism worth supporting the House of Saud? Or the countless other regimes?
To simply dismiss the whole thing as anti-American is fatuously dishonest.

170 First off, I wanna give a kudo's to Ace for not selecting choosing which comments he allows on this site, unlike some other previously thought-of conservative free-speech sites (conservativenetwork to name one). That's why I've followed this site for years and will continue to do so.

That said, until recently the only times in my life I my blog comments were responded to with cruel ad hominem attacks were on leftist blogs. Now, it's all the rage on all of the major "conservative" blogs if they suspect you have any sympathy for Ron Paul or his supporters.

Have we not learned that screaming racist/anti-semite/retard is the last refuge of the liberal scoundrel?

Continue down this path my friends, and you will have lost all moral authority to discredit the left when they inevitably scream the same racist jiberish about the eventual Republican nominee, whomever it may be.

220 Question to the more reasonable posters, both pro-Paul/anti-Paul:Why
do people generally have such a hard time believing a minority could
fervently be against identity politics and political correctness? Do
they think we are incapable of realizing it is not in our long-term
self-interest? WTF?

All right, I'll try simply answering your question and see how that goes.

They don't hard time believing that. Not here. I know this because I've been reading here for a long time.

What they're reacting to is entirely different: a perception that Ron Paul's supporters are not worth engaging with, because so many of them literally cannot process counter arguments to the pro-Ron-Paul case, which makes for a very dull conversation. Many of them defraud online polls, which is dishonest.

Therefore anyone coming here with that particular Paulite gleam in their eye is not taken seriously, and is initially judged merely for their amusement value. This skepticism has a very substantial historical justification, but I fully grant that it may be unfair in any particular case. The path to overcoming it is to maintain politeness, really listen and respond to what people are actually saying (one way to test this is to see if you think you can state their argument in a way that they would agree with), and be patient enough for people to figure out that you are exception.

Even by asking the question, though, you sow the suspicion that you are not sincere, and are therefore capable of imposture. Your question was of the form "why do people here believe X?" Most people here do not believe X, as you would know if you had been reading along, so it looks like just another quickie pro-Ron-Paul drive-by, not worth much investment of time.

At least that's what I think is true. Of course I can only infer, not speak for anyone else here.

221 Thank you for the thought-out response Splunge.

While I do not entirely agree, I cannot entirely disagree either and thus, appreciate your analysis.

And just to be clear, I never said "people here," but rather, "people generally" (referring to both right and left blogs, as evidenced by my previous posts). But that's neither here nor there, as your response was otherwise on point.

Thanks again for the serious response, as I look forward to addressing your concerns.

A perception that is partially true I'll admit, but it's carried way out of context. I feel that's a separate subject though.
I'm going to have to disagree with you because this recent anti-Paul wave of attacks has nothing to do with what you describe. Campaign season has been going for a while now.How do Paul's supporters warrant a character attack on Paul, and why now?
Nobody is blind to the fact that Paul has very, very little chance of winning the nomination. Paul is there simply to add to the debate with the long-term hope of his message growing even bigger and down the road someone else taking that torch. There's no reason for this wave of anti-Paul, except, except, it's the establishment reaching out to try and save its preciously corrupt electoral system.
A lot of time and money has been invested in this two-party system where effectively the GOP gets to hand-pick the guy they want and all the rest of us are stuck with whoever that is. We may get a few choices, but come on, it's smoke and mirrors. And the early primary states are an essential part of that. As a Texan I really don't even know why I vote in the primaries? By the time I get to vote other states have already chosen the candidate. While not "technically," that attitude is so pervasive that it amounts to the same thing. The outcomes of early states influences all the other states that follows.
Paul has managed to turn that whole basket of eggs on its head and people are freaking out about it, and it's frankly hilarious, the true conservative colors are coming out.

225 "Oh. So, if I have this right, Ron Paul admits he lies about the newsletters in the midst of a campaign in which he cannot tell the truth for political reasons."

Yes. You have that exactly right. Back in August 2010 in the midst of the elections and the Ground Zero mosque fight Ron Paul said, " any opposition to the project was "all about hate and Islamaphobia." But see, Rand Paul did oppose it and Rand Paul was running for Senate. Guess what Ron Paul said when he was asked in a pair of CNN interviews..."Rand's opposition to the project did not suggest he's bigoted toward Muslims. "I don't put everybody who's a candidate in that same category -- you'll have to ask him for his reasons." and, "I think he's in the category of most of the people who are running
for office who get pushed, rightfully so, by their opposition, or by the
media, who say, "What is your position, do you want it or not?" He's
taken a different position." Ron said politicians like Rand are falling into a trap set for them
by bigoted conservatives in the blogosphere who have turned what Ron
says is a simple debate about property rights into a fomenting
anti-Muslim sentiment on the right."

Read the rest at: talkingpointsmemo dot com Ron on Rand: My Son Is Not Islamophobic (w/Video)

Back then I thought either Ron Paul just lied on his son, or Rand Paul is a liar. Now? I still don't know if Ron Paul lied on his son or if Rand Paul is a liar, but I do know that Ron Paul is a liar, and I also know that a lot of times, not all the time, rotten trees have a way of producing rotten fruit and that it doesn't fall far from the tree...

226 Will you people grow up about Ron Paul please. If he was in any way responsible for those letters, give the guy credit for the fact that people (except for maybe people like you) actually grow up and learn the errors of their youthful ways. He's not a racist now. He's got a credible campaign with ideas that more and more Americans are finding some value in. OK he sometimes talks like your crazy uncle, but he's not dangerous and his ideas are mainly a very logical extension of the Constitution. He knows way more about monetary policy than anyone else here or in Washington, and the distortion of the economy through corrupted monetary policy is the rotten thread that has run through every administration since Jefferson. It underlies the creeping power of every Congress since the Revolution. The guy is really on to something and it's maybe just a bit too complex for you guys so you call him nuts rather than actually read up about it. You sure as hell haven't got anything better to offer the country.

Posted by: ladyhawk at December 22, 2011 09:41 PM (y87Fw)

227 The main reason this is such a shame is that it delegitimizes the very accurate Austrian critique of our monetary policy. Ron Paul has done more to popularize Keynesian fallacies than any other public figure in recent history despite being opposed to them intellectually.
