DOOM: So it's like that

DOOOOM

The horrifying chart-fu that doomed the Super Committee. This is the unpleasant math that the Democrats don’t want to face: in order to sustain the welfare state at anything like the current levels indefinitely, tax rates would have to skyrocket for everyone, not just the rich...and the programs would bankrupt us anyway, just a bit later. (Just consider this thumb-sucker from Eugene Robinson of the WaPo that excoriates Republicans for their "stubbornness" -- Robinson refuses to even countenance cuts to the entitlement state, because apparently that's just crazy-talk, and hence Democrats are the very souls of reason for refusing to discuss it.)

The Euro and the Austrian business cycle.

XKCD on Money.

Dividend stocks are becoming popular again. People tend to forget that, back in the days before the 401(k) changed the investing landscape, dividend stocks were the whole point of investing in equities from an individual point of view. The 401(k) rule that turned millions of people into investors drove a demand for ever-higher share price rather than the slow and steady returns of dividend stocks, and consequently drove many businesses into a very short-term, quarter-to-quarter mindset.

In the Eurozone, the perfect storm looms.

Corzine is staying true to form, at least: the "missing client cash" in the MF Global meltdown has just about doubled to $1.2 billion. I'll be interested to hear Corzine and his defenders explain how this was all an honest mistake rather than outright fraud. (Corzine's defenders in the Democrat political-media complex seem to be saying that a little fraud is okay as long as you hold good progressive principles.)

UPDATE 1: The Internet undoubtedly can help many small businesses to grow in ways they couldn't otherwise, but it can also turn a bad business decision into a catastrophe. The word is amplification, and it applies to both good and bad ideas.

UPDATE 2: Jeb Hensarling publishes the coroner's report on the Super Committee.

Monty, they never intended to do anything. This entire ploy was a scheme by the Dems for election 2012. They knew very well the Pubs would not go for a $1T tax hike.

I have been recommending this to Morons here for years. I have been retired since 2005 and have been living off of dividends alone since then.

I don't think that. I simply think they are buying the votes of people so that they can stay in offices. They're simply too stupid or don't care that one day they tab will have to be paid. I think they're grasp of economics leads them to believe that they'll put the Republicans in a position where taxes will have to be raised.
What they don't seem to understand is that high taxes can't pay off the amount of debt we have.

I keep going back to Native Son written by the black author Richard Wright in the 30s. He was a communist and even worked as the communist party chair in Harlem in the 30s. The book is about using the black population to bring about a power shift to the communists. BTW, Obama's favorite book and set in Chicago. It even has elements of Black Panther philosophy in it where we are led to forgive a murderer and rapist because of how the man has set up society.
It's all right there and has been for 80 years.

The reason I don't ascribe the democrats policies to some nefarious plots is because I think a lot of them are actually idiots.
Look at Hank Johnson, John Kerry, and the rest of the bunch. They're idiots. Privileged idiots. Do you think John Kerry is smarter than your average American? Do you think Barney Frank or Chris Dodd are any different than the NYC huckster stealing from the easy marks that are tourists?
The only difference is the level they are doing it on. The type of intellegence and skills needed to become a successful politician do not alwaysoverlap with the type of intellegence and skills needed to be a successful businessman, doctor, or other useful profession.
Cunning and banal speaches don't work as well when you're running your small business as they do in the halls of Congress or at political rallies.
I think these people simply don't understand what they're getting us into. I'm sure there are thouse of them that do get it, but I think they've decided that they'd rather hold onto power than try to fix it. Plus, they've convinced themselves they will be out of office or dead when the butcher's bill needs paid.

I mostly agree. The privileged fools who haven't had to work for a living, but have either lived off others (like Kerry) or have made a career out of feeding from the public trough don't have the intelligence to realize that the Free Lunch© always comes to an end. There has always been someone else -- that would be the American taxpayer -- to clean up their messes.

But the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure does actively seek to destroy America, IMO. His actions are deliberate, and are part of a carefully considered plan that ends with a totalitarian communist state paid for by confiscation and the printing of endless quantities of money.

To ascribe his deeds to stupidity is shortsighted and perilous.

And the rest, even if clueless, are co-conspirators and accomplices.

62 If I could opt to privatize any part of my SS "contributions" I would do it in a heartbeat.
The 401(k) rule that turned millions of people into investors drove a demand for ever-higher share price rather than the slow and steady returns of dividend stocks, and consequently drove many businesses into a very short-term, quarter-to-quarter mindset.
Okay, see, there's a reason so obvious that it whizzed right past me. It's been bugging me for ages why companies do things that are obviously totally idiotic from a longrange perspective just to get the quarterly bumps. Add the 401(k) stuff alongwith tying bonuses to quarterly performance and bingo bango thereyou go.

When we do reach the explosive inflation stage make sure you pay off all your debt with cheap crappy inflated dollars - if you wait until the dollar gets recycled banana republic style - by a factor of a hundred or a thousand to one you'll still owe a hundred thousand on your house - but instead of a hundred thousand dollars being a weeks worth of groceries you'll owe a hundred thousand real dollars after the recycle.

74 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy grew at a slightly slower
pace than previously estimated in the third quarter, but weak inventory
accumulation amid sturdy consumer spending strengthened views output
would pick up in the current quarter. Gross domestic product grew
at a 2.0 percent annual rate in the third quarter, the Commerce
Department said in its second estimate on Tuesday, down from the
previously estimated 2.5 percent.

But don't worry comrades, it's spin time!

Data so far suggest the fourth-quarter growth pace could exceed 3 percent, which would be the fastest in 18 months. Despite
the downward revision, last quarter's growth is still a step-up from
the April-June period's 1.3 percent pace. Part of the pick-up in output
during the last quarter reflects a reversal of factors that held back
growth earlier in the year.

That's right comrades, even though everything but unemployment is revised down Minitrue continues to assure us that things are getting or will be getting better and if it doesn't it's the Republicans fault

76 BTW, for anyone interested in dividend stock investing, there are some good articles now and then on Seeking Alpha in the 'investing for income' section. A good place to start is to look at companies that allow you to join their dividend reinvestment plans directly, avoiding a broker, and several companies even absorb the reinvesment fees. A few companies to look at: AEP, T, XOM, JCI, KMB,MRK, PG, PM, SO. If you plan wisely, you can ladder your dividends to get a relatively even monthly payment when you are ready.

Hopefully, they are increasing their dividends over time though. There was a great articly I read recently, showing that during the downturn, most dividend stocks (ex. financials) increased their dividends, even as the stock prices decreased. If the dividend stays the same too long, you will start to lose to inflation, and might be forced to sell shares to maintain cash flow.

89 That xkcd pic is cool. Suggest looking at the upper left of the "thousands" section where it compares 'net worth' in 1984 and 2009 by age groups. What is interesting and telling is the switch over. The '1984', younger groups have more net worth than the '2009' younger folks. But for older folks, the '2009' groups are richer. It makes sense. The younger groups in 1984 are now the older groups in 2009. Cause? Current younger generation doesn't understand 'worth' or is it they just haven't earned any? I guess the former based upon the section just above the net worth one showing wages nominally even for production earners.

96 But at some point you must start putting aside and unfortunately a lot do not.

In former times, people started getting serious about saving when they had children, and accelerated when they reached their peak earning years (generally in their 40's or 50's).

The problem is that these habits have been deteriorating in the past few decades -- too many people are consuming too much of their current income. Some of this behavior is a bad side-effect of the two-decade bull market that ended in 2001: Boomers assumed that 9-10% "safe" returns were a fact of life rather than a historical anomaly, and thus did not save enough of their own money. Their Gen X/Y children (and their children) also took a lot longer to "launch" -- many did not start careers until their middle 20's or even early 30's. Thus we are compressing the working years at both ends: starting later and retiring sooner. And in the middle, we fail to save enough of what we earn.

99 I think our biggest problem right now is 95% of the "leaders" of the GOP and 100% of the Dems see very clearly what is coming and have made the decision to manage the decline--they are pulling up the ladder and are leaving us to fend for ourselves. They are going to bust out the US and loot as much for themselves as they can while they can.

I said it a long time ago about the War on Terror and why so many of them really acted like they didn't give a shit if a few thousand Americans were killed--because they really believe that those types of acts will never, ever kill anyone they know or love. It's really not their problem. And so we got the TSA and lawfare.

112 Wish I was smarter on strategies and my understanding of risks,
rewards...is there some simple explanations and realistic advice out
there?
My usual advice is: don't listen to the Internet People (even me). Find a good financial adviser or a banker you trust, and lay out what your plans are. You need to have targets in mind, not just some blind idea of "saving money". Are you putting away money for a house? For the kid's college fund? For retirement? All three? What are your income expectations in retirement? Do you plan to work at least part-time in retirement? Do you plan to own your home by then? Do you or your spouse have any chronic health issues that you will take into retirement? (Health costs are always a shock to retirees, both because as a person ages they need more of it, and because costs keep going up.)

The key is to find someone you can trust. Bankers get a bad rap these days, but in my experience there are far more good ones than bad ones, especially at the smaller regional banks. With financial advisers you have to be a good judge of character, obviously. FAs are like lawyers: good ones are a pearl of great price, while bad ones can bankrupt you in short order.

Oh man this. A few years ago I was doing some briefing work on a spoliation motion that was based around the other side's claim that hey we didn't destroy the records on purpose, the computer did it automatically, it's not our fault, honest! I more or less had to use puppets to explain to the lawyer handling the case on my side that a computer doesn't do anything at all unless someone programs it to do so and that the questions that she needed to be asking the other side's IT people were a. what was the default setting for destruction and b. how did they change that when directed to do so. I also pitched a fit until I got her to allow me to include in our brief that computers are stupid and do not act independently thus making it the fault of the people who programmed it, not the computer. Sadly, I was forced to take out the footnote that said that this was assuming a lack of HAL, Skynet and/or the singularity. Luckily the judge hearing the issue was moderately computer savvy and did not appreciate the computer ate my homework defense.

This is free advice, and worth every penny you paid: If your employer has a match, set your contribution to get the entire match, usually that is 6% of your pay. I would put most of that in whatever the company offers that is a broad equity fund (your company should have a relatively clear description of each fund they offer). Additionally, I would also invest after tax - select a few dividend reinvestment stocks to start - go to Compuserve web site and BNY Mellon web site; they have lists of companies that you can invest in directly instead of using a broker. You can also go toa company website to access information on how to invest, and whether they allow direct investment. Again, free advice - you might look at ExxonMobil, Procter and Gamble, and Southern Company as decent picks, and set up an account with each, then set up monthly withdrawals of money from your bank account to buy $50 or $100 per month in each stock. You will be surprised how fast your holdings grow.

They note that many polls time and again show Obama has a solid floor around 45%. Combine this with a scorched-earth campaign conducted by his surrogates and the weakness of our potential Republican candidate, and this paints a picture of painful sobriety. It will be very difficult to beat Obama, if at all.

Too often as we pound our keyboards, we assume anybody could defeat Obama, even a ham sandwich. This is far from the truth. We need to consider how we will get along under a second term of a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

136 Daryl Issa says they are very close to contempt proceedings against Eric Holder on Fast and Furious. He also says, sadly, that there is zero chance of impeachment proceedings against a cabinet level official.

Is Fast and Furious a criminal conspiracy? Of course it is. Was it about advancing gun control in this country? Of course it was. Were Holder and Obama involved? Of course they were. Can anything be done about it? No absolutely nothing. Monty is right, we are doomed - just not for the reasons he thinks.

As long as nobody has any video of Obama and Holder roasting and eating small children there is effectively zero constraint on what they can do. And I'm not sure anyone could do anything about even that.

There is the answer to your question Ace: "How could these people think that they could escape the gallows?" The gallows was never an option they had to worry about.

I wish to apologize to everyone for completely wasting their time by pointing out the truth about Fast and Furious. Silly things like facts and truth and 200 counts of depraved indifference felony murder no longer matter in this country.

Posted by: Jean at November 22, 2011 10:53 AM (WkuV6)
have yet to see anything that says he loses big except maybe electorally w/ a certian candidate. FL is def. leaning GOP, OH is looking good but not good enough. CAC and me both agree OH may be trending more blue in the future as NH, PA, WI start trending more red. Afterall ace does say this could be a re-alignmment election. MI is a tossup but a certain candidate is better postioned then others to beat Obama there. CO i've seen no polling from and I'd love to see that. NJ I see no sign of going red even w/ the certain candidate in the picture.

He wasn't that beatable in '08. And he'll still have an extremely friendly media environment. He'll still have white guilt on his side. (You would turn out our first gay, African-American, Muslim president after only one term, you racist bigoted homophobe!)

I can't fathom that notion. Clearly he was not beatable in 2008, as reality proved. He could only be defeated by McCain and people voted for Dickless Soetero.

We ought to start considering Romney's weakest points. People at large will have to want him more than Dick. At any rate, just listen to that podcast. For extra doom. Their conversation yesterday was alarming.

Beats me. The only strategy I see is a replay of the end of Bill Ted's Excellent Adventure. The music of BT's band, Wyld Stallyns, is supposed to be the basis for utopian government in the future. The final scene has them producing a cacophony of sound with no evidence of talent whatsoever.

George Carlin say about them "They get better. Really they do."

160 Politicians have long known that fiat currency is a subtle form of slavery to the State. Here is why. It is the only thing that you can use to legally pay your taxes. If you are a farmer, try giving one of your pigs to the County assessor. Not gonna work.

The fiat currency is designed to gain or lose value depending on the whimsical needs of the politicians. It is then the State which decides the value of your labor or of your trades by currency manipulation.

165 Obama's three day mini -campaign:

President Barack Obama’s trip to Nevada, California and Colorado is a compressed version of his own 2012 campaign strategy.
The president is hitting several Hollywood fundraisers, showing sympathy with distressed Hispanic households, eating at a soul food restaurant, giving a speech on student loans, smiling through swing-state Colorado, and rolling out a new slogan that paints him as a concerned, effective leader.
He’ll also jet over to Colorado on his way back to D.C. That state is becoming increasingly important for him as his poll numbers fall in Midwestern states and in Virginia and North Carolina.
He’s down, but not out, in Colorado, according to an August poll by Democratic group Public Policy Polling. That poll showed he had a 46 percent approval rating and a 50 percent disapproval rate, down from a 51 percent-45 percent split in February, which matched Obama’s victory in 2008.
Monday night, for example, Obama hit two Hollywood fundraisers, where he picked up a maximum of $35,800 per guest for his campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
The first event highlighted African Americans in Hollywood, and was attended by fans such as actor Will Smith and basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson. He made sure to name-drop a famous African-American restaurant, Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles soul food. In 2012, he’ll need a high turnout by African Americans, despite their record unemployment rates.
He also held a fundraiser in Nevada for 240 people, held two in L.A. Monday night, and is holding three more in San Francisco Tuesday.
Tuesday’s fundraisers in San Francisco will bring him up to 60 this year.
The initial stopover in Nevada allowed the president to to show middle-class voters his concern for real estate prices.
He won the state 55 percent to 42 percent in 2008, but he’s down to 45 percent approval now, with 52 percent disapproval, according to Public Policy Polling. That’s bad, but not yet lethal.

I was once allowed to add a footnote saying that upon request we would provide the formulas proving that the space-time continuum moves in a forward direction at sub-light speeds. That was replying to a motion trying to preclude an expert report for being late that we provided one day ahead of the deadline. I got to do that mainly because everyone was so ticked off because it was the first time in years that we actually got something there a day early instead of the poor office guy/girl having to speed across town to deliver it at 4:59 p.m. to the other side's office. The judge who heard that was so ticked off at the other side that we actually got sanctions for a meritless filing.

The scheme was packaged with a new Obama slogan — “We Can’t Wait” — that seeks to paint Republican leaders as surly obstacles to progress. The slogan compliments another element of Obama’s stump speech: Republicans put “party before country.”

Oh-and here is the "reason" he had to fly out there-

Tonight’s appearance on Jay Leno’s late night show will hep him reach that demographic. But the the real pitch starts tomorrow, when he‘s slated to announce a new policy that will help students better manage their students loans, White House Communications Chief Dan Pfeiffer said in a Monday press conference.

You are too kind to the enemy.

Your second group is losing members to the first group. Not all, but a large percentage of the jackoffs in the second group held middle-class-welfare jobs when times were fat. These jobs are gone for now, and that is why the OWSers are pooping in the parks.

The third group doesn't "cash out" so much as "cash in." They are pure evil. They use the first group as a bludgeon to rationalize stealing from the rest of us.

BTW, somebody commented yesterday that power is only a means to an end. I cannot prove it since it is a psychology question, but I think that is bullshit. A significant percentage of the human race would go to great lengths to gain and defend their hold power. Everyone knows several people who get their jollies making other people jump through hoops regardless of whether there is any other gain in it for themselves.

When somebody steals money, what he plans to do with it doesn't enter into the argument when determining if there was a crime.

AP Exclusive: Report links wildfires to immigrants

Yet this is the first paragraph:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- A study by Congress' investigative arm shows investigators have linked 30 fires that erupted in a five-year period in Arizona's border region to people who crossed into the United States illegally - a finding Sen. John McCain said backs up earlier statements he made about illegal immigrants and wildfires.

Notice how that word, illegal, is missing in the headline. The whole article is about illegal immigrants starting fires. Frankly, I'm surprised they reported it at all.

203 Nancy Pelosi's fundraising email from 201:

We have the smoking gun.

If you need further proof that Congressional Republicans are
putting big Wall Street banks before middle class families, look no
further than an explosive memo prepared by former John Boehner
staffers-turned-banking lobbyists.

This just-leaked memo details an $850,000 “message war” plan
to attack and discredit grassroots citizen movements working to hold
special interests accountable...

Why are Republican lobbyists panicking? One of the
overriding concerns of the memo’s authors is how it will look for their
executives to collect multi-million dollar year-end bonuses at a time
middle class families are struggling to make ends meet. This is just
another example of the misguided priorities of the Republican Party.

The memo goes on to describe a Democratic victory in
November as detrimental to Republican special interests. They know a
Democratic Majority in Congress will fight for middle class families,
and make sure that millionaires pay their fair share and close corporate
tax loopholes.

But, we need you. Stand with us and contribute today.

Thank you for your generous support.

For the after-tax investments, your taxable income will grow gradually, so you probably won't notice too much until your total annualdividend income reaches $1500, when you have to file schedule B. The IRS treats reinvested dividends as if you received the cash and then wrote a check for more sharees.

279 "Contribute a little bit more..." = "I just want to put in the tip".

Okay Mr. President, who are these "well-to-do" people telling you that they want to be taxed more?

280 I'm addicted to politics and it's such an utter waste of time.

Let me know when you find the cure...

There's a debate tonight....

281 275 I'm addicted to politics and it's such an utter waste of time. Let me know when the shooting starts, I think I'm done with all this, seriously. For all the time I spend staying informed I'd be betterofdoingjust about anything else.Government needs to be whitewashed. All the GOP candidates are a joke. The real problem isn't Obama or Congress or any of that, but all the idiots that elected them.

You should spend your time wisely. Like me...Play video games, golf and drink beer..lots of beer.

282 Why does this make me feel uncomfortable?

I know I've never like the sound of "Home land" anything. Makes me think of phrases such as "Father Land", "Mother Land" etc.

Those are phrase one hears from, well, from dictatorships LIKE Egypt.

There's may have some minor element of Democracy to it but under Islam it's a Theocracy. That's a dictatorship by committee and places that have them usually have ruling Junta or Council or some such.

So should we rename OUR Homeland Security the Secret Service?

A compilation of all of Obama's victory laps would make a great ad.

At the end, screen goes black.

Voice: "Are you better off now than you were before Obama?"

284 There is a news story out there I tipped Ace about but he hasn't picked it up.

Probably because it's more of that "icky conspiracy" stuff: http://tinyurl.com/792xx77

287 For the NYT's survey of those who would willingly serve as the audience in the background for another Barky Bark-A-Thon comes this reaction to the failure of the Superfriends' Super-Dooper-Chili-PooperCommittee: “This makes me scared.”

Pathetic...

When they madeVirtus training mandatory a few years ago for those teaching or in the general vicinity of weekly religion classes, I quit. I always volunteered for office duty while classes were in session: ringing the starting bell, ringing the ending bell and doling out office supplies or band-aids from the First-Aid kit. If I encountered one lone kid in the three years I was there, that was a lot.
I spoke to the asst. dir. of the program and said, "Why is this coursemandated for volunteer moms/grandmothers when somepriests were the ones doing the molesting? (She had no answer.) I told her I wouldn't be returning the next year as I hadanything better to do with four hours of my time than that!

290 The Kerrys and the Corzines and the rest of the Lefty fucks know exactly what they are doing. They believe they are insulated from the consequences. Bottom line is that they just don't give a fuck. They will do just fine.

291 I'll be interested to hear Corzine and his defenders explain how this was all an honest mistake rather than outright fraud.
