Mitt Romney, Weasel

Over the weekend, George Will came out in his column critical of Mitt Romney's constant flip-flopping. Will's opinion itself is a flip-flop, leading Ramesh Ponnuru to wonder why. I think the answer might be that Will never realized just how much of an empty suit Romney is until now. And he hit his tolerance limit:

Obama, a floundering naif who thinks ATMs aggravate unemployment, is bewildered by a national tragedy of shattered dreams, decaying workforce skills and forgone wealth creation. Romney cannot enunciate a defensible, or even decipherable, ethanol policy.

. . .

In May, in corn-growing Iowa, Romney said, “I support” — present tense — “the subsidy of ethanol.” And: “I believe ethanol is an important part of our energy solution for this country.” But in October he told Iowans he is “a business guy,” so as president he would review this bipartisan — the last Republican president was an ethanol enthusiast — folly. Romney said that he once favored (past tense) subsidies to get the ethanol industry “on its feet.” (In the 19th century, Republican “business guys” justified high tariffs for protecting “infant industries”). But Romney added, “I’ve indicated I didn’t think the subsidy had to go on forever.” Ethanol subsidies expire in December, but “I might have looked at more of a decline over time” because of “the importance of ethanol as a domestic fuel.” Besides, “ethanol is part of national security.” However, “I don’t want to say” I will propose new subsidies. Still, ethanol has “become an important source of amplifying our energy capacity.” Anyway, ethanol should “continue to have prospects of growing its share of” transportation fuels. Got it?

Will goes on to wonder whether conservatism has come this far, surmounting many obstacles along the way, "to settle, at a moment of economic crisis, for this?" After it first appeared, the all caps "THIS" was replaced with italics. He should have stuck with the original, since it better communicated the revulsion many conservatives feel. The thing is, I think Will would continue to give Romney the breaks like he did during the time Ponnuru cites--back in March of 2007--if there was anything at all identifiably, solidly conservative about him. There's just nothing there. He's a pure politician, a Republican of convenience.

Perhaps that is why Romney has been snapping up advisers from the George W. Bush administration. Politico writes that conservatives are up in arms about it:

The Republican right cringes at some of the high-profile people Romney is leaning on for donations and advice, including three former Bush-era officials whose recent records include lobbying for Solyndra and advocating on behalf of cap-and-trade legislation and carbon taxes.

. . .

Most environmentalists don’t have pleasant memories of the Bush administration, but Republicans also recall how Bush signed into law a 2005 mandate requiring the nation to use billions of gallons of renewable fuels, or his buckling as a lame duck to the Democratic-controlled Congress by signing a 2007 law raising fuel economy standards.

Near the end of Bush’s second term, he’d even embraced a national goal for halting the growth of greenhouse gases.

The solution, of course, is to hire Frum. Go the whole enchilada. Kill the Tea Party forever.

Actually I don't blame Bush for that. He submitted a rel energy plan in 2005. By the time it had made it through the damn senate where RINOs like McCain blocked drilling in ANWR and crossed the aisle to side with the Dems on the "green" shit the bill became a POS.

It would have been nice though if he had vetoed it, but he never once vetoed a bill while the Republicans had the majority. That was his downfall.

75 In my own weak mind, there is a reason why the establishment wants to keep the corrupted mess of a political system intact. There is a reason why they don't want the debt dealt with in a meaningful way. There is a reason why they want to keep the current abomination of a tax system in place. We know some of it; They want to keep power in the hands of who they decide should wield it and they want the ability to easily enrich themselves and their friends. But I think there is more to it now. This corruption is on a global scale. I think that this election is more critical to the political establishment in this country than we can possibly know. 95 As for George W Bush...well, he has some admirable qualities as a human being, but he was an utterly atrocious president for large chunks of his two terms. Without him and the recklessly spending faux Republicans in Congress, the conditions under which President Petulant got elected would never have existed. I have a hard time not completely despising W for that. It gets harder not to with each passing day of the current administration.

123 If anyone needs to see whether or not TARP and the stimulus programs actually worked or whether or not they actually prolonged the economic down turn, all you have to do is look at Iceland. It's small, I know, but they were crushed by the same economic mess that the west is caught up in now. The thing that saved them was that when they wanted to be bailed out, nobody came to their rescue. Many of their banks failed. They took their medicine and now their economy is growing again. The bailout was just another way for politicians to transfer wealth to themselves and their friends. When the pundits say that the bailout kept the economy from going over a cliff, where is the proof of that. There is none. Too big to fail was bullshit too. The biggest banks are bigger than ever. We were, and continue to be, snookered by politicians.

We've got all this Natural Gas that we're not tapping.....as well as oil resources. ....It makes no sense whatsoever for us to be burning food.

Posted by: ConservativeMenAreJustHotter at October 31, 2011 01:59 PM (XkwIi)

128 We couldn't have scripted this any better.
Perry was the guy we really feared for the general election, but throw a vaccine and tuition breaks for brown Catholics at the John Birch Society Retread Convention and they flip their lids and begin foaming at the mouth. Of course we knew that all along. Now we've already preempted that candidacy. Phew.
Romney is a good general election candidate, but we always knew we could cut off his legs during the primary. I mean, come on, a liberal Northeastern opportunist who's part of the LDS Church!? Yikes. If Romney gets the nomination we think Barack can win by a margin about equal to the number of conservatives who'll stay home and not vote to send their messages and to prove their points. TYVM, folks.
If Palin had run we'd have done backflips, but since her rubes have switched their allegiance in lock stop to Cain, like the robot mannequins they are, we're basically getting the same benefit. Now we've got a true empty suit who couldn't win a major election in his home state sucking away poltical oxygen from the only two guys who possiblycould beat our Barack next year. The only way this could get any better for us is if your rubes are so dumb they actually nominate Cain, in which case Barack could spend the next 12 months reading Alinsky books in Indonesia and still win reelection. Seriously.
To top it off you've still got awhole bullpen full of freaks and nuts -- Bachmann, Paul, Gingrich -- making waves and turning off the middle.
Stay classy, conservatives. We're measuring the drapes in the Oval Office for Barack's next four years. Heh.

Also, even some who are considered solid Republican Establishment do not take David Frum seriously. His claim to fame is that he coined a few memorable phrases, wrote some good but ultimately forgettable speeches, and penned one pretty good book. That is it.

Hershey's bars, mini-snickers, packages of MMs and skittles. These are all approved Halloween candy. Those nasty "taffy" things? No. Peanut-butter crackers? Oh, hell, no. Granola bars? Do I look like I want my lawn forked and toilet-papered?

178 OT reply to laceyunderalls, I feel your pain and wish I could share with you the caramel apple lollipops I bought for the non-existent kids who supposedly trick or treat here on my dead end street of 4 houses that is pitch black at night and distinctly uninviting. But, you know, I had to buy the lollipops "just in case."
I would applaud your sacrifice....but. I just got done remortaring 2 bricks on our walkway to the house this afternoon. Why? Cause Mrs. Mallamutt discovered the 2 bricks were loose yesterday...and today is Halloween. We will have a grand total of 4...yes...4 trick or treaters tonight (and 3 are the kids that live next to us) but, my Gawd! according to Mrs. Mallamutt, the massive hoard is coming tonight and someone could get hurt by those 2 bricks. So it has to be done RIGHT NOW! Doesn't matter what I had to do today. Those 2 bricks had to be resecured PRONTO!
Now, the better question, what the hell am I gonna do with the other 50 lbs of mortar I still have (its dry....not wet.....I'm not that home repair impaired yet).

I would sympathize with that position - maybe even agree with it - except for one huge factor...federal judiciary appointments, especially to the Supreme Court, that Obama will get to make during 4 more years in office. At least 1 and maybe as many as 3 or 4 slots filled on the SC with hard left doctrinaires who are also young and will be there for decades. Yes, Mitt Romney may suck but he's surely preferable to giving that change to the SCoaMF. Romney or Perry or Cain or Ron Freakin' Paul is better than giving this bastard the chance to do that to our federal courts. New Republican majority in the Senate or not, they'll never come up with the 'nads to deny him his SC picks. So, we can't afford to leave him in office to make them, no matter how much we may detest the GOP nominee.

No shit. I cannot believe the Cain supporters refuse to see just how weak he really is. And just how happy Romney and the Democrats are at his rise. The GOP will forever lose any chance at a black vote if Cain stays in too much longer. Maybe you all have some black friends, maybe you just say you do; if you did, you would know just how much a joke he already is to the black community. We will buy zero good will by nominating him, in fact, it will force a lot of outright anger because they will (rightly or wrongly) view it as the GOP making fun of them, mocking them.

Just to repeat (until is sinks in): Cain will--WILL--endorse Romney by March 31, 2012, or sooner, no matter what. Cain will never endorse anyone else, no matter what.

Cain is Michael Steele for President.

212 I have wondered what would destroy the Tea Party as a viable political movement (not that I wish it so)

Obama in the white house another 4 years? = Tea Party would thrive and expand. (what would America look like in 4 years?)

Rino like Romney in the white house? Facing Romney would they have to change targets like the Anti Bush/War protestors who morphed into the OWS crowd? Or would they keep up same principles but targeting Romney instead of Obama (like Amnesty and Bush, which I believe were the first embers of the tea party) = not sure how it would play out.

If Cain were elected, and went the mixed bag Bush route, but alynskied by a frenzied frothing media? I think the Tea Party would survive but a weary skeleton crew thus divided and diminished factor for awhile.

If Cain were to end up like say a Christine O'donnel. Constant foot in mouth, odd stuff in their history, and firestorm of Palinization by the media. I actually think if Cain were to get elected and become the worst fears of his detractors would be the one thing that would fairly or not turn the tea party into a tiny group of pariahs.

I think we can all see that the real problem is the media needs more of its power checked. There needs to be a half dozen smaller Fox News that fill the spectrum from from conservative-center right- far right. Collectively they would have the power to interrupt the leftist media from being able to pull the degree of outright fraud they do now.

Really, how does it feel to know that you and the many like you are happy to see The US go down the shitter?
You say you're waiting, you say not to blame you. You say you want to hear the right message. Sit home and let The SCFOAMF destroy my childrens future with exectutive orders and appointments to the SCOTUS? 237 Here's the thing:

Romney is such a giant crap-sandwich that it's going to take a LOT of political ketchup to get people to get it down. He is a terrible candidate and all of that magnificent red wave we saw in 2010 will be in danger of being rolled back if we elect someone as squishy as him.

We had plenty of other candidates to fill in that gap, but because we are FUCKING MORONS we've now create a vacuum that threatens to consume all of the momentum we built.

Can't like Palin because she's "stupid". That was a left meme, but it seems we adopted it along the way.

Can't vote for Cain because he isn't experienced enough or something. Even though he probably has more business experience than all of us combined, but that's o.k. We'll just disqualify him because of abortion gaffes and taxes. Remember though, you're now arguing in FAVOR of our shitty progressive tax code.

Newt? Yeah, he is an awesome candidate and a master debater (hurr), but OH NOES! HE HAS BAGGAGE! Still trying to figure out when I'm supposed to give a shit about his divorces.

Santorum? Uh huh.

Huntsman? Really? Why is this guy even on our fucking ticket?

Bachmann? CAH-RAZY. We can't possibly vote for her because she's nuts! BONKERS! WACK-A-DOO~

Perry? We're really going to be upset because he used the term heartless? Grow the fuck up. I don't give a fuck how tired he looks during the debates. All I know is that in comparison to the SCOAMF in the White House he's fucking phenomenal. At least his head isn't on a permanent swivel like the comrade-in-chief.

Paul? Why in the fuck does anyone take him seriously? We all know what kind of people follow him, and lets not get him started on the Jews.

Look at that list. What. The. Hell. All of the candidates that we "like" seem to be so fundamentally broken (allegedly) that we can't take them seriously. The others are bat-shit insane, and then we are left with Romney. UGH.

The bothersome thing here? The fact that the MEDIA is less of an issue than the rest of the GOP establishment. The MSM doesn't actually have to work hard this time to discredit us. Hell, we're doing it to ourselves.

Geez Dave, why don't you just save some time and load those sticks of butter and the gallons of frozen Haagen-Daz into a cannon and fire'em directly into your chest?

No comparison btwn McCain and Romney. Romney will run an actual campaign to begin with.
He isn't my first choice, but my first two choices are not running.
Ronald Reagan isn't walking through that door.
I'm on board, as pretty much always, with WFB. Vote for the most conservative candidate that can WIN.
