Surprise! WaPo Embellished Sen. Rubio's So-Called Embellished Family Story

Earlier today, the Washington Post ran a breathless story claiming that Sen. Rubio embellishes his family story when he says that his parents fled Fidel Castro to come to the United States. According to the Post, Rubio's parents became LPRs two years before Castro rose to power.

The only problem? Rubio apparently never said that his parents fled Castro to come to the United States. WaPo embellished that little detail. Miami Herald does the legwork:

But the top of the [Washington Post] story suggests Rubio himself has given this "dramatatic account:" that "he was the son of exiles, he told audiences, Cuban Americans forced off their beloved island after 'a thug,' Fidel Castro, took power."

However, the story doesn't cite one speech where Rubio actually said that.

To back up the lead, the Washington Post excerpts from a 2006 address in the Florida House where Rubio said “in January of 1959 a thug named Fidel Castro took power in Cuba and countless Cubans were forced to flee... Today your children and grandchildren are the secretary of commerce of the United States and multiple members of Congress...and soon, even speaker of the Florida House.”

The catch: If you listen to the speech, Rubio isn't just talking about those who specifically fled Cuba after Castro took power. He doesn't say that his parents fled Cuba. Instead, he was talking about "a community of exiles." That is: He was talking about all the Cubans who live in Miami.

The Washington Post story has all the classics: elided quotes, vague assertions, and even vaguer sources. And, of course, multiple layers of painstaking editorial fact-checking.

Rubio issued this response:

“To suggest my family’s story is embellished for political gain is outrageous. The dates I have given regarding my family’s history have always been based on my parents’ recollections of events that occurred over 55 years ago and which were relayed to me by them more than two decades after they happened. I was not made aware of the exact dates until very recently.

“What’s important is that the essential facts of my family’s story are completely accurate. My parents are from Cuba. After arriving in the United States, they had always hoped to one day return to Cuba if things improved and traveled there several times. In 1961, my mother and older siblings did in fact return to Cuba while my father stayed behind wrapping up the family’s matters in the U.S. After just a few weeks living there, she fully realized the true nature of the direction Castro was taking Cuba and returned to the United States one month later, never to return.

"They were exiled from the home country they tried to return to because they did not want to live under communism. That is an undisputed fact and to suggest otherwise is outrageous.”

When Rubio says he did not know the exact details until recently, what he means is that some Birthers intent on somehow proving that he's not a "natural-born citizen" dug up his parents' adjustment and naturalization paperwork. That's where WaPo got the dates for his parents' arrival to the United States.

Manuel Roig-Franzia - Reporter

Washington Post executive editor Marcus Brauchli found himself in the middle of an altercation Friday evening between Style reporter Manuel Roig-Franzia and editor Henry Allen, but will not say whether the two have been reprimanded by the paper.

Reports that Allen punched Roig-Franzia surfaced Monday morning on FishbowlDC, Washingtonian and City Paper (which reported Brauchli was traveling).

Multiple Post sources independently confirmed to POLITICO that Roig-Franzia got hit while defending colleague Monica Hesse from harsh criticism leveled by her editor, Allen.

Allen, according to the Washingtonian, had told Hesse that a piece she had written was “the second worst story I have seen in Style in 43 years."

Roig-Franzia, also working a story with Hesse that ran Saturday, told Allen not to be such a “c—sucker."

Allen swung twice, with one punch hitting Roig-Franzi, according to sources. Next, staffers on the 4th floor —including Brauchli, whose office is temporarily across from the Style section — jumped in to break up the altercation.

59 Someone at Hot Air linked a HuffPo (I know, I know) story about Rubio and the GOP and immigration. Maybe I'm wish-casting, but I think he's leaning Perry. Also, I thought the article was surprisingly fair, correctly characterizing Rubio's and Perry's positions on the Federal DREAM Act.

Excerpt:

Rubio also offered his party a cautionary note on immigration, saying
it had to be careful not to focus primarily on targeting undocumented
immigrants.

"We cannot be the anti-illegal immigration party. We have to be the
pro-legal immigration party," he said. "We have to be a party that
advocates for a legal immigration system that's good for Americans, good
for America and honors our tradition both as a nation of immigrants and
as a nation of law."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has taken heat from many of his fellow
Republicans for signing a law in 2001 to provide in-state tuition to
some undocumented students. Fellow presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a
former Massachusetts governor, has likened Perry's position the one held by President Obama and other Democratic leaders.

In 2003, as a member of the Florida state legislature, Rubio also backed legislation -- which ultimately failed -- to provide in-state tuition rates to some undocumented students.

Rubio refused to take either Perry or Romney's side on the issue,
telling reporters after the event, "Rick Perry had a bill in Texas. We
had a different bill in Florida."

In the end, it probably won't prove career-ending - not at all like Scott Brown's fantasy about growing up a young girl in the Carolinas.

Okay, so Rubio isn't going to be the first Latino president, or vice-president. Is being a Senator so awful?

81 "8 The WaPo is all in for O'Stumblefuck and future democrat candidates. It's business as usual to demean and destroy any conservative with malicious and false claims to ease the run for liberals."

You can make an argument that it's proven more-or-less reliably pro-incumbent, but look at that op-ed page line-up: you can't conclude that. There are a few ineffectual libs, Robinson, the guy with the lisp, Milbank depending on the time of month; the rest is pretty reliably conservative. Plus, the owner, the publisher, the manager of the editorial section - all Republicans.

This sort of thing really only happens in the news department (which I think is still under Woodward, but I could be wrong). They all want a chance to go deep, grab a Pulitzer, write an expose, then off to the lecture circuit and MSNBC. This guy broke his cherry badgering Edwin Edwards like a paparazzi on hot sauce. You look at his name, it's seems clear they expect us to think Cuban - but he's not even really Latino.

82 I'm glad that the Washington Post was so concerned that a sitting US Senator with presidential aspirations might not be a natural born citizen that they sent an investigative team to delve into it, just in case that horror arrived and we ended up with a person not eligible to serve.

Wow, glad we dodged that bullet...

84 "83 The Wapo scum will make a big deal about this but never spent a freakin' second looking into where the fuck O ever came from. They know the exact day Rubio's parents came to this country but can't tell you the first time Zero met Bill Ayers."

Actually, we do know, on both counts. Ace can tell you the evidence is compelling that Obama was born in Hawaii, of an American mother and a Kenya father, having met with both were attending University of Hawaii as students. The amazing thing is this guy was born out of wedlock, to a white mom and black dad, who abandoned he and his mom when he was very young, yet look where he is now. This is America, man.

On the second one, apparently no one considered at the time it might be a momentous occasion, so there are no videos - plus no iPhones in those days - but according to both they met the first time in the living room of a mutual friend who wanted to introduce Obama around to help get him support to run for public office. Also according to both they served together on a voluntary board on a Chicago education initiative, which is hardly surprising given both were teaching and Ayers is a quite prominent theorist in public education organization. Also, both say they never went beyond being acquaintances, though Ayers has said, and confirmed, that given all that happened after they both left that board, Ayers would have liked to have known Obama better.

Now, you can say all that is bullshit, and there's a cover-up, at least one, buried in there somewhere. But it's not as if there aren't millions and millions of dollars at stake in proving that, so it's very hard to argue that no one has tried.

I don't worry about all that. As Dick Cheney says, everything leaks out; if there was more and it mattered, it likely would have come out by now. Instead, I worry about own problems being essentially unrooted from any particular American tradition but while able to adapt to and mimic so many American traditions somehow unable to commit to any. If he was an old-fashioned liberal, or what's called a progressive, or a Bernie Sanders type, fine, we all could deal with that. But he none of those, and neither is he any sort of conservative. To me, he's a mediator, one of those types you get to meet to see if there's a way around a dispute or a fight. But a lot of times the parties have to have their showdown, and mediation's a waste of time. So far he's tried to pass himself off as Reagan and Lincoln, while his opposition is trying to turn him into Carter or Clinton. None of those are a fit. Now he's flirting with becoming Roosevelt, and there's no reason to think that will fit either. I think he's a bunch of historical accidents, and his presidency is one of them; if he'd not run for president when he did, and was coming up in 2014 for re-election to the Senate, I think he'd be having trouble seeing himself being re-elected, and very possibly would not be, which would do to his White House aspirations pretty much what's happened to Santorum, and he'd be headed back to Chicago to maybe run for mayor or return to teaching, this time for real.

He won't go down as the worst president in history, because hasn't been; instead, he'll get ranked in with the forgettables and regrettables like Fillmore, Hoover and Carter, where he belongs, consigned to a special section of hell where he has to spend the rest of his life explaining why he failed to live up to the challenges of his times.

85 Seems like the MBM has concluded the openly, brazenly partisan MSNBC model is the way to go.

Pathetic.

92 OK ... I have to chime in here.
My father is another person who escaped Cuba. He was 15 and didn't speak a lick of English. He has not been back to his homeland for decades.
Like Rubio's parents he actually left right before the fall of Batista. (He really did have to escape. My father is responsible for the shut down on the Havana Military Academy. Yaaay, Dad!)And like Rubio's family he went backafter Batista's fall. My grandmother quickly sent him back to the US because she knew what was coming.
Sadly, she thought Castro was to be a temporary dictator because there was no way that the US would allow communists so close to them. Certainly the US was going to help save them. Sigh.
People don't understand how it all went down. Cubans were told that Castro was going to restore the Cuban Constitution. And most believed it.They were thrilled to be rid of Batista. There was a lot of hope and change in the air.The communist change didn't happen overnight either. It happened quickly, but in increments. Theyrealized too late what was going on.There weren't too many people who knew, or more importantly ACCEPTED the truth that Castro was not the great liberator but a tyrant who would make Batista look like a saint.
So, I get exactly what Rubio is saying and think Roig is a douchebag. And this is why we in the Cuban-American community tried to warn people about 0bama. We've seen his kind before.

98 ROUNDS COOKING OFF

The Democrats have this "enemies list" --- denominated in epithets aimed at the people whose wallets they wish to hijack and take up residence inside. You can be a “Racist!” and you can be a “Terrorist!” and you can be a “Dictator” and you can be a “Hostage-taker!” and you can “Wear a tinfoil hat!” and you can be a “Homophobe!” and you can be a “Teabagger!” --- a homosexual man taking his partner’s scrotum into his mouth. You can be “Selfish!” and you can be a “Wacko!” and you can be a “Hick!” and you can be a “Rube!” and you can be “Uneducated” and you can be an “Extremist!” You can be a “Right-wing-nut!” and you can be “Mentally Ill” and you can be “Deranged!” and you can be a “Flake!” and you can be a “Warmonger!” and you can be "Unenlightened!" and you can be a “FatCat!” and you can be a “Nazi!” and you can be a “Fascist!” --- although no one more closely approaches the precise description of “Nazi!” or “Fascist!” than the usual Democrat propagandist --- either official, or self-appointed.

Lies, after all, are the heart and soul and the sword and shield of the Democrat party.

So all you have to do to occupy multiple epithets on the Democrats’ enemies list is to insist that they take their hands off yourself, off your wallet, off your property, off your kids, off your diet, off your healthcare, off your household appliances, off your car, off your bank account, off your weapons of self-defense, off your liberty, and off your freedom of speech. Insist on all these good things - and that qualifies you to be spat upon by nasty, mean-spirited scum --- by The Friends of All Mankind --- by a gang of lying, thieving, dope-smoking, pill-popping, coke-snorting, sticky-fingered, bloodsxcking, tax-eating, gun-stealing, predatory humanitarian thugs --- by the Democrat party, in other words. No political party in the history of America more profoundly deserves absolute and outright destruction.

99 THE FLEA PARTY ---- OHBUMMER'S "WALL STREET OCCUPIERS" AND OTHER OHBUMMER STREET GANGS
A couple of months ago I began referring to OhBummer as a pathological flea, inasmuch as the majority of Americans see him as a bloodsucking fraud and a dishonest propagandist.
About a week ago I bumped into a blog comment referring to the Occupy Wall Street gang as "the flea party" and I warned the author that I would STEAL his ingenious reference and use it wherever it could inflict the most damage on the enemies of the American taxpayers.
More recently still, my favorite columnist, Ann Coulter [she a Christian and myself an atheist], published a column entitled "WINGLESS, BLOODSUCKING AND PARASITIC: MEET THE FLEA PARTY!" at her anncoulterdotorg website.
Clearly, things have gotten out of hand. This prairie fire of flea-mongers is raging out of control, wherever you turn. ~:<
It's a lot more people than just "the rich" who despise OhBummer and his rioting foot soldiers.
The Fleabaggers in OhBummer's Flea Party [Occupy Wall Street and its metastasized little cancers in other cities] are the ideological blackshirts, brownshirts, redshirts and no-shirt thugs tasked and directed in their riots by OhBummer allies Michael Moore, David Astroturf Axelrod, and Van Jones, by MoveOn.org, the SEIU, the Huffington Post, and OhBummer's former employer, ACORN --- and, naturally --- by Barak Hussein Hushpuppy Hoover OhBummer, himself --- with a cameo appearance by dopehead rugmuncher Roseanne Barr-The-Beheader.
Oh, the corporations! Oh, the banks! Oh, BOO HOO! Most of these demonstrators and rioters have a wind-up key sticking out of the middle of their backs with OhBummer's fingerprints all over it. He pooped all over their brains and they LOVED it, crying, "Oh! Oh! More poo, please! More poo!"
This so-called "spontaneous, leaderless civil unrest" is a White House operation, conceived in the bowels of Barak Hushpuppy OhBummer's fetid little mind --- while he sat ruminating in the bowels of the White House --- and enacted by OhBummer's chosen proxies, surrogates, cronies, and confederates.
OhBummer and the OhBummer Wrecking Crew have been promoting envy [mental illness] and trying to shift blame to "Greedy Wall Street" and away from themselves --- they who are what novelist Ayn Rand called "greedy for the unearned."
I advocate that the police shoot and kill every one of OhBummer's rioting troops who obstructs traffic or trespasses on private property or in any way threatens or attempts to intimidate any of their critics or their intended victims.
Yes. These are the lying, arrogant, GREEDY-FOR-THE-UNEARNED, bloodsxcking, tax-eating Democrat hoods, thugs, and gangsters. I advocate and I seek their destruction.
There are still approximately 120 million privately-employed nongovernment taxpayers in America today, and while this pathological flea, Barak Hushpuppy OhBummer, and his minions, are promoting street riots, I advocate that all 120 million of these privately-employed taxpayers stage a riot on the bridge of OhBummer's nose. That skunk wants race riots and class-warfare riots --- and he should get a riot that will make history.
$ $ $ $ $
Meanwhile, back at the hacienda.... In 2008, the top 1% of earners paid more than 38% of all Federal income taxes. Check this out at ntudotorg, "who pays income taxes."
And so to the President of the United States of America and to the so-called "99-percenters" in OhBummer's street-gang Fleabaggers who claim victimhood --- go blow smoke up your own asses.

100 THE AGE OF OHBUMMER

OhBummer is a b00b and a fool for attacking the American Tea Partiers. Heck, he thought that he had all of us hoodwinked, hornswoggled, and bamboozled. He’s annoyed that the Tea Partiers are not grateful to him for hijacking the American healthcare system --- the greatest act of vandalism perpetrated upon the American people since a gang of jihadi frootloops and loonytoons hijacked some planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center towers --- and the Pentagon, and made a failed attempt to crash into the White House --- and instead drilled a hole in a Pennsylvania farm thanks to some very courageous American passengers.

And --- now widely seen for what he is --- the president presents a problem for the Democrat-captured media. They pump out his propaganda for him --- and, like the opinion monitors in Ayn Rand’s novel, “Atlas Shrugged” --- they are dodging brickbats and rotten vegetables.

He’s pompous, pampered, and pretentious --- a pseudo-intellectual fop. He’s a glorified, smooth-lyin’ dandy, and slicker than Sick Willie Clinton. He’s a dictator-on-the-make, a bloodsxcking, predatory humanitarian thug, and a low-down skunk.

He’s a fraud and a swindler. He lies when he inhales and he lies when he exhales; his oxygen is the falsification of reality. He lies, placidly and laconically, as if deception were a soporific drug.

He’s a friend of the poor and the downtrodden --- indeed, you can hear the milk of human kindness sloshing around inside of him when he walks.

He declares himself the post-racial leader --- “Let me be clear!” he intones --- and he hides behind his race, daring his critics to put their reputation for fairness at risk.

He pauses to ponder the portent of his propaganda --- and it is fakery; he smiles and his mendacity comes shining through. Shake hands with Barak Hushpuppy OhBummer --- “The Mistake of ‘08” --- the illegal alien squatter in the White House until his “papers” have been lab-tested for age and chemicals, etc --- the King of The Republic of Lies --- and America’s first and last Arab president. Now count your fingers.

101 SPARKS FROM WYATT’S TORCH
What this country needs is a truly LIBERAL president and congress and judiciary! And I forgive the reader for suspecting that this must be some kind of bad joke!
But the Democrats believe in "statism" --- not "liberalism."
Strip them naked of their “liberal” camouflage and behold their ugliness.
They benefit from the imprecise American political terminology ---- we say "the government" here in the USA ---- rather than "the state." And that's a dangerous problem.
Famous brands of statism in recent centuries have been Nazism, socialism, fascism, communism, and welfare statism ---- this last is a mixture of fascism and socialism.
Liberalism, on the other hand, is a political philosophy of small, cheap government ---- it is a constabulary ---- and the job of a liberal government is to enforce human rights within its own jurisdiction.
What "human rights?" I speak of the unalienable and perfectly-natural and universally-valid human rights of life, liberty, private property, and the pursuit of personal happiness.
A slave is owned by someone other than himself --- but a free man owns himself. The first article of private property is "the self" --- and all other rights are derivatives of and flow from these cardinal rights.
These rights ---- The Rights of Man ---- are the gift of nature or of nature's god ---- and they belong to all human beings, everywhere.
Show me a Democrat who subscribes to all of the above, without qualifications or weasel words.
The words "liberal" and "liberalism" were hijacked by the Democrats and socialists and fascists long ago ---- and it was the mistake of conservatives and libertarians to let them get away with it.
It is long past time that liberalism be reclaimed, defined, and explained by its rightful owners ---- by the champions of freedom, i.e.: not by Democrats.
Well, how about "progressivism?" Whuzzat?! “Cancer” is “progressive,” too.
Isn't “progressivism” just another statist cancer?
It chews you up, piece by piece, in the name of Da Peepul? Eat Da Rich? Moral cannibalism, anyone?
Friends of freedom! Friends of peace-through-strength! And friends of prosperity!
Declare yourselves to be "liberals," then ---- and kick over the bloody coffee tables --- and overthrow and trounce the Democrats in 2012!

102 SAM ADAMS IS MORE THAN JUST A GREAT YANKEE BEER!

TAX HATER SAMUEL ADAMS, ON A ROLL AND ARMED TO THE TEETH, AUGUST, 1776……

"You darkeners of counsel, who would make the property, lives and religion of millions depend on the evasive interpretations of musty parchments; who would send us to antiquated charters of uncertain and contradictory meaning, to prove that the present generation are not bound to be victims to cruel and unforgiving despotism, tell us whether our pious and generous ancestors bequeathed to us the miserable privilege of having the rewards of our honesty, industry, the fruits of those fields which they purchased and bled for, wrested from us at the will of men over whom we have no check.

"Contemplate the mangled bodies of your countrymen, and then say, What should be the reward of such sacrifices? Bid us and our posterity bow the knee, and supplicate the friendship, and plough, and sow, and reap, to glut the avarice of the men who have let loose on us the dogs of war to riot in our blood and hunt us from the face of the earth? If you love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom – go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

“Courage, then, my countrymen, our contest is not only whether we ourselves shall be free, but whether there shall be left to mankind an asylum on earth for civil and religious liberty. Dismissing, therefore, the justice of our cause, as incontestable, the only question is, What is best for us to pursue in our present circumstances?”

“It does not take a majority to prevail….but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.”

“Among the natural rights of the colonists are these: first a right to life, secondly to liberty, and thirdly to property; together with the right to defend them in the best manner they can.”
“The Constitution shall never be construed… to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.”

105 ...you made it to Drudge via Erik Erickson, Gabe. congrats.

During the 1950s, how long did Cuban immigrants to the US usually wait before formally applying for US citizenship? Particularly those Cubans who fervently wanted to see Castro's departure from power? Most particularly regarding the lowest income least educated Cuban immigrants such as bartenders and maids, what official US government "program" educated that segment of our American population as to their legal rights, obligations and status as to becoming official US citizens or remaining Cuban citizen residents of the USA? Birthers concerns should be laid at rest since Rubios parents DID officially become US citizens, denouncing Cuban nationality, before Rubio reached the age of an adult; and Rubio was born and raised an exemplary loyal US citizen.

Is the glass half empty or full? The self-described Birthers attempting to verify that Rubio would
qualify constitutionally under the same scrutiny as they require of
Obama the Deceiver?

When Rubio says he did not know the exact details until recently, what
he means is that some Birthers intent on somehow proving that he's not a
"natural-born citizen" dug up his parents' adjustment and
naturalization paperwork. That's where WaPo got the dates for his
parents' arrival to the United States.

The natural born citizen POTUS requirement text exists within the Constitution. Given Obama's deceits and abuses, the text should be respected all the more so as not to lose the protection it provided the sovereignty of the USA through the office of the POTUS.

I find it fascinating, coming across so many "letter of the law" provisions exonerating whatever "doubts" cdr Kirchner wanted to lay at rest in his own research.

Our two nations have been substantially intertwined through trade and treaty and possession since early 18th Century European colonization of the Americas, prior to the national inceptions of both the USA and Cuba. The Cuba-US history provides many opportunities for Birthers to get off their dubious Rubio legal standing case, even given that Rubio's father didn't formally request US citizenship until after his son's birth.

Gabe and readers including Birthers should at least reference Wikipedia's entries to locate further references from the following subject headings.

Cuba-US Relations: Plans for purchase of Cuba from the Spanish Empire were put forward at various times by United States. As the Spanish influence waned in the Caribbean, the United States gradually gained a position of economic and political dominance over the island, with the vast majority of foreign investment holdings and the bulk of imports and exports in its hands, and a strong influence on Cuban political affairs. Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959 relations deteriorated substantially, and have since been marked by tension and confrontation. The United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Cuba and has maintained an embargo which makes it illegal for U.S. corporations to do business with Cuba. U.S. diplomatic representation in Cuba is handled by the United States Interests Section in Havana and there is a similar Cuban Interests Section in Washington D.C; both are officially part of the respective embassies of Switzerland. The United States imposed the embargo because of the nationalization of US corporations' property during the Revolution...Historical Background: During this period [early 18th Century] Cuban merchants increasingly traveled to North American ports, establishing trade contracts that endured for many years. The British occupation of Havana in 1762 opened up trade with the British colonies in North America, and the rebellion of the thirteen colonies in 1776 provided additional trade opportunities. Spain opened Cuban ports to North American commerce officially in November 1776 and the island became increasingly dependent on that trade. After the opening of the island to world trade in 1818, Cuban-United States trade agreements began to replace Spanish commercial connections. In 1820 Thomas Jefferson thought Cuba "the most interesting addition which could ever be made to our system of States" and told Secretary of War John C. Calhoun that the United States "ought, at the first possible opportunity, to take Cuba." In a letter to U.S. Minister to Spain Hugh Nelson, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams described the likelihood of U.S. "annexation of Cuba" within half a century despite obstacles... By 1877, the United States accounted for 83 percent of Cuba's total exports... English traveller Anthony Trollope observed that "The trade of the country is falling into the hands of foreigners, Havana will soon be as American as New Orleans". North Americans were also increasingly taking up residence on the island, and some districts on the northern shore were said to have more the character of America than Spanish settlements. Between 1878 and 1898 American investors took advantage of deteriorating economic conditions of the Ten Years' War to take over estates they had tried unsuccessfully to buy before while others acquired properties at very low prices. Above all, this presence facilitated the integration of the Cuban economy into the North American system and weakened Cuba's ties with Spain.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the US policy towards Cuban immigrants during the 1950s (when the Rubios arrived) was to encourage them to NOT apply for US citizenship, but to remain Cuban citizens, being used as political pawns as Castro revolutionaries destabilized relations and rights.
