Friday Afternoon Solyndra Document Dump: Obama Fundraiser Turned Department Of Energy Official Pushed For Deal That His Wife's Law Firm Profited From

Just yesterday at his press conference, Obama said this about the Solyndra loan guarantees.

...But the process by which the decision was made was on the merits. It was straightforward. And of course there were going to be debates internally when youre dealing with something as complicated as this.

But I have confidence that the decisions were made based on what would be good for the American economy and the American people and putting people back to work.

Apparently "merits" is code for "companies who hire law firms connected to big time donors who work form my administration.

There actually is a line between crony capitalism and illegal corruption. It looks like the Solyndra story is getting closer and closer to the latter.

An elite Obama fundraiser hired to help oversee the administration's energy loan program pushed and prodded career Department of Energy officials to move faster in approving a loan guarantee for Solyndra, even as his wife's law firm was representing the California solar company, according to internal emails made public late Friday.

"How hard is this? What is he waiting for?" wrote Steven J. Spinner, a high-tech consultant and energy investor who raised at least $500,000 for the candidate before being appointed to a key job helping oversee the energy loan guarantee program. "I have OVP [the Office of the Vice President] and WH [the White House] breathing down my neck on this."

Many of the emails were written just days after Spinner accepted a three-page ethics agreement in which he pledged he would "not participate in any discussion regarding any application involving [his wife's law firm] Wilson [Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati]."

...

Recovery Act records show Allison Spinner's law firm, Wilson Sonsini, received $2.4 million in federal funds for legal fees related to the $535 million Energy Department loan guarantee to Solyndra. That ethics agreement said his wife would forgo pay "earned as a result of its representation of applicants in programs within your official duties."

Spinner's firm says she didn't directly profit from the Solyndra billings but this stinks to high heaven. The fact that this was released on a Friday afternoon of a three day weekend shows the White House knows this.

Below the fold, a John E. (who was actually on this angle before anyone else it seems) special info-graphic showing the Solyndra timeline.

No we acknowledge the world is largely corrupt. But, in order for our ideology to be valid, we have to believe in some sort of absolute morality, which implies there are means which cannot be justified by the ends in at least some cases. Does the left exploit this? Yes, they know that as soon as they act that morally justify a means for us we will use it. They know where the lines are and usually stay shy of them. So our limits in many ways also limit them. I think they are getting ready to make the big bet soon though and push past those limits. May you live in interesting times.

I don't know; a possible (if incomplete) way out for the Obama admin might be to blame fraudulent accounting practices by Solyndra. They'd claim that they wouldn't have given the loan had they not been deceived.

It would be a lie, but an almost un-falsifiable one if they could make the charges stick.

I disagree. While FF has a body count, it would be difficult to show that it was motivated by malicious intent. I doubt the beneficiaries- the Mexican drug cartels- were big campaign donors. At worst, it would be found to be the result of incompetence with perhaps a coverup in the form of lying after the fact by Holder.

With Soylndra there's the obvious corruption angle. Obama handed over a half billion dollars of taxpayer money to well connected big campaign contributors despite the request once having been denied by the Bush administration and warnings by his own staffers.

130 @104: "No we acknowledge the world is largely corrupt."
Acknowledging the corrupt nature of the world has nothing to do with my post. Both sides acknowledge it, but only one makes much use of it. The Right doesn't even do much to guard against it.
"But, in order for our ideology to be valid, we have to believe in some sort of absolute morality, which implies there are means which cannot be justified by the ends in at least some cases."
Again, that misses the point. Ideology doesn't matter as a practical matter - winning does. Unless you can force your opponent to accept that the same means are off-limits, voluntarily limiting your own set of options is basically suicidal. No one is going to remember the well-mannered, principled losers in a Socialist Worker's Paradise (or an Islamic Caliphate, for that matter.) I don't mind that much if you, or anyone else, voluntarily consigns themself to slavery or death. I do get somewhat annoyed when they volunteer me to join them.
"Does the left exploit this? Yes, they know that as soon as they act that morally justify a means for us we will use it. They know where the lines are and usually stay shy of them. So our limits in many ways also limit them."
Tell you what - let's have ten fights with an agreed list of rules. You must abide by them all, I can ignore 1/3 of them at my chosing in each fight. Care to make a wager on who wins?
"I think they are getting ready to make the big bet soon though and push past those limits."
Agreed, becausethey've accurate concluded that it ispretty clear that there really isn't any real cost for doing so. The Right has never actually staked a position and refused to budge.
"May you live in interesting times."

Under heavy pressure to find real cuts, Navy officials are seriously considering decommissioning a nuclear aircraft carrier halfway through its planned lifespan, two Pentagon sources confirmed.

George Washingtons three-year-long refueling overhaul, scheduled to begin in 2016, would be canceled under the scheme, and the ship would be decommissioned as its reactor fuel ran out.

Along with the carrier, the Navy could also disband one of its 10 carrier air wings a move which would save roughly as much money and people as cutting the ship.

Decommissioning GW would leave the Navy with a 10-ship carrier fleet, a move which would need to be approved by Congress. U.S. law currently mandates an 11-ship force.

You didn't mention the most damning fact of all. In February 2011 with Solyndra visibly on the verge of collapse (it had already defaulted on a required payment), the Department of Energy agreed to subordinate the taxpayer-guaranteed loans to new loans from the existing private investors that were -- wait for it, ...politically connected to the Administration.

A liquidation in February would have wiped out Solyndra's influential investors and embarrassed the hell out of Hard Hat Barky (who had made Solyndra the very symbol of his Green Jobs bullshit) but it would still might have paid back a significant portion of the taxpayer-guaranteed loans. The Administration weighed all of this and decided it was less important to protect taxpayer funds than to protect Solyndra's campaign-friendly private investors. Accordingly, the Obama Administration threw the taxpayers to the wolves by agreeing to subordinate the taxpayer guaranteed loans in a reckless bid to protect Obama's campaign contributors.

Sad, because we old fucks realize that inside of three years (if they make it that long) they will be broken down shells of their former selves; Having come to the realization that the world isn't fair and no manner of hard work and/or intelligence will get you anywhere in a crony system.

279 Reading over yet another of John E.'s striking infographics/timelines, I cannot get over the tone and and sense of entitlement of Chrs Gronet who thought he deserved that loan. How dare they keep his money from him!

And I really love John's next entry where Seward kills it outright.

When I was a pricing contracts manager I used to have customers pull the ol' If you don't put me at the front of the queue I'll take it to your competitor bullshit and my response was always "If you can get better service over there, then I certainly can't fault you for it. I'll go ahead and kill this request. Please don't hesitate to send over a new request if you change your mind."
Usually, they come back with their tales tucked between their legs but this Gronet guy apparently has no shame. AND, he found a willing accomplice in Obama.

Is anyone keeping an eye on how Obama's personal wealth has been growing since in office? I'm just wondering because I would guess that he will return to Chicago a very wealthy man.

Or...perhaps he doesn't return to Chicago. Perhaps he'll retire to the islands with his money, and his girlfriend.

McCain and Graham, thechampion GOP Liberals from the West and the
South, did everything in their power to destroy Romney in 2008. Result:
McCain loses to Obama. Obviously the shitbag racists, regionalists,
neo-Confederates. etc. that make up the Evangelical base will never vote
for a Mormon American, but who the fuck wants them anyway?

1. Romney would have lost to Obama too, and not because Christians would have sat it out. He'd have lost to Obama because he would have been seen, like McCain was seen, as a squish who didn't offer much of a choice. God knows who Romney would have chosen as a running-mate; probably Jeb Bush.
2. I am leery of Evangelicals myself, but they are not "racists, regionalists,
neo-Confederates". They are evangelicals because they evangelise... they go out and convert other races, other regions and presumably even the odd Yankee here and there.

Posted by: chemjeff cardinal fan at October 07, 2011 09:44 PM (rzpYg)

I like LaRussa, just hate the Cards. But since they are in the Central and I really hate the Phillies, I'm rooting for an all NL Central NLCS.

368 BTW I hate Les Miles too.LOL.

Posted by: steevy at October 07, 2011 09:47 PM (fyOgS)

369 That said, I'd like to see the Cardinals take this series so I can hate them a little longer this season. I like to nurture my hate and make it really flourish.

LSU will lose at least 2 football games this year.At least.Count on it.

One in the conference and one in the Bowl.

371 Yawn. The same useful idiots who will vote for a career politician like
Perry will decry a proud capitalist perpetual candidate like Romney as "an establishment
tool".

Fixed.

372 Doc grew up in Denver, is around my age, and we played baseball around the same time in the area so I root for him a bit. Other than that, I don't care.
Glad the Brewers won though.

374 I heard Perry once used a racial slur at a spelling bee.

375 Its funny to see the guy bitching about the Liberal Republicans from the South and the West to view the solution as going with the Liberal Republican from the Northeast. And to hear complaints about how the guy is viewed as an "establishment tool" when the RNC (you know the Establishment) are, uh...., the ones pushing hard for him.

Posted by: MissTammy at October 07, 2011 09:57 PM (SsG4J)

384 Big shout out to all the Perry supporters, particularly to Y-Not who has been flat out saying that the only reason people like Jeff Flake have come out for Romney is because they are Mormons. You got what you wanted.

Congratulations.

You got the religion card played by Perry. Don't dance around it. You knew this shit was coming. Particularly when Perry's candidacy was cratering.

A Straw poll win for Romney. Now if he can just win an actual primary with actual Republican voters he'll be on his way.

Agreed. Perry had better disclaim this idiot quick, as in, first thing tomorrow. I for one am going to notice and remember if he doesn't.

409 Spinner's firm says she didn't directly profit from the Solyndra billings
_____________________
Hahahaha. No, of course she didn't profit "directly." The money from the taxpayers first went into Solyndra's bank account, from there, millions of itwent into the law firm's bank account, and from therehundreds of thousands of itwent intoSpinner's bank account.
Clearly an "indirect" profit. So it's all okay. No corruption here. Nothing to see, just move along, folks.
