| BREAKING: Anwar al-Awlaki Killed By Crushing Disappointment in NBC's Fall Lineup, Drone-Launched Hellfire Missiles, But Mostly Drone-Launched Hellfire MissilesSeems pretty confirmed now: even U.S. officials are saying they have "high confidence" that radical Islamic cleric al-Awlaki has been killed: U.S. officials consider him a most-wanted terror suspect, and added his name last year to the kill or capture list - making him a rare American addition to what is effectively a U.S. government hit-list. A statement from Yemen's foreign press office said the al Qaeda suspect "was targeted and killed 8 KM (about 5 miles) from the town of Khashef in the Province of Jawf, 140KM (about 80 miles) east of the Capital Sana'a." There have been previous reports claiming al-Awlaki's death which turned out to be erroneous. Al-Arabiya television network cited local tribal sources as saying suspected U.S. drone aircraft - which are known to operate in Yemen - fired two missiles Friday at a convoy of vehicles believed to be carrying al-Awlaki and his guards.A very good start to the weekend, I think. Al-Awlaki met personally with two of the 9/11 hijackers and his sermons were attended by three of them. Nidal Hasan was also one of his pupils and al-Awlaki corresponded with Hasan in the months before the Ft. Hood attack. The Christmas Day Bomber, Umar Abdulmutallab, says al-Awlaki was one of his trainers. The cargo plane bomb plot in October 2010, in which PETN explosives were sent from Yemen to Chicago was allegedly masterminded by al-Awlaki. His online sermons inspired other attacks in both the UK and the U.S. Al-Awlaki's father, along with the ACLU, filed suit to get al-Awlaki off the CIA's Kill on Sight list. According to his father, al-Awlaki is just "misunderstood." I'd say the case is moot. Comments1

Although he was born in NM he grew up in Yemen and had dual citizenship. Something that was illegal until fairly recently.
The dual-citizen status needs a history update, whoever remembers the administration that changed legal status. The Yemen strongman President Saleh made Drudge headlines this week with his sneaky get-away home from Saudi medical treatment. Gregory Johnsen seems the Yemeni online expert. Just out of curiosity, would Anwar al-Awlaki have been raised in the tribal northern region that has been Saleh's stronghold these past decades, or in the Marxist southern former Soviet basketcase marked by civil war demanding secession from the Yemen which Saleh forced them into through war? Wouldn't This specific person actually be a case that should have been in an american court? No,that would only be true if there was a Republican President. One of the many layers of hypocrironyin AmericanDemoacademediatainment sectoris the fact that while America's enemies are comparatively safe with acomfortable Democrat Presidentlike Clinton, or early-honeymoon Obama, when things go south like they did for Clinton post-Monica and Obama post-inauguration, the equation changes.
Then the American pussycat's claws can come out instantly, because Republicans will always support America's interestsand Democrats will always support a troubled Democrat's interests. This is the protection racket thatourDemoacademediatainmenteliteshave beenrunning for years: elect a Republican and we will hamstring him, but elect one of us, and we wil let him do pretty much anything he wants, and if heneeds to be seento protect America and destroyits enemies that particular day, well you're in luck. Of course, if he needs to destroy his personal political opponents andprostitute theAmerican justice system for that purpose, you are pretty much SOL. There are two ways to look at this issue.
First was he really an American citizen? According to the current anchor baby interpretation yes he was. But he was also a dual citizenship citizen. Secondly he was involved in a declared war against the United States. IOW he was in armed insurrection. When George Washington went after the Whiskey Rebellion people he did it with an armed militia. When MA went after Shay's rebellion they killed them with a cannon, not a law book. This is not new contrary to all the hype we are hearing. Posted by: Vic at September 30, 2011 11:41 AM (M9Ie6) 189

Vic, in a hopefully more tumor than healthy cell killing tweak. I'd like to point out the irony of a Virginia president leading militia troops to Pittsburgh in crony capitalist support of an oligopoly of which he was part as a vertically integrated (corn to still to bar) producer retail seller ( thus passing the tax directly to his drinkers).

That's not exactly true in all cases, however for him it probably is. However, once he becomes activly engaged in military operations against the U.S. he is no longer in courts and legal territory. He then comes under the territory of the military under rebellion. As I posted earlier to one of the other posters, when the Whiskey Rebellion occurred George Washington didn't suppress it with the law. When Shay's rebellion occurred it was a canon that responded to the crowd, not a law book. This is not anything new. Posted by: Vic at September 30, 2011 02:42 PM (M9Ie6) 215

LOL, I never said that the people involved in the Whiskey Rebellion didn't have a point. The U.S. has made it a point to shit on some segments of the population with taxes while supporting others with the money since its inception. The Tariffs of Abomination were the same thing and were one of the leading causes of that war of 1861. Posted by: Vic at September 30, 2011 02:45 PM (M9Ie6) 216
This is going to be great weekend. They should wrap theSOB (or whatever is left of him)in pig skin to send a message to other Al.Qs wanna be terrorists.

"Kill-on-sight" is how a rational world would treat ALL pirates, and ALL jihadis.
No matter what country any of these outlaws might have been born in, once they turn to piracy or jihad, they have demonstrated themselves to be "enemies of all mankind" who refuse to subject themselves to the mutually-agreed standards of conduct that civilized countries abide by. I absolutely agree with President Bush's decision to invade Afghanistan to wipe out the terrorists who had taken refuge there after 9-11. His mistake was in NOT carpet bombing the areas known to harbor Bin Laden, instead deciding that he had to "nation-build" and "win hearts and minds". Screw that. Whether going after pirates or jihadists, the civilized world has to demonstrate that it's a *MASSIVELY* DISASTROUS choice for ANY nation to give them safe haven. Wherever these "stateless soldiers" go to ground, we who defend the interests of the civilized world must make it SO PAINFUL for the host country to shelter these bastards that they will NEVER allow them in; and if the presence of such "enemies of humanity" is discovered in their territory, THE HOST COUNTRIES THEMSELVES will clear them out rather than risk having us do the job. (Also, THAT would have a very civilizing influence on Islam, in my opinion...) Posted by: A_Nonny_Mouse at September 30, 2011 03:43 PM (hq0VE) 218
Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable failure.

In the Suit brought by awlaki's father and aclu.
Judge John Bates; Here’s what the court said about that, on page8: The United States has, however, repeatedly stated that if Anwar Al-Aulaqi “were to surrender or otherwise present himself to the proper authorities in a peaceful and appropriate manner, legal principles with which the United States has traditionally and uniformly complied would prohibit using lethal force or other violence against him in such circumstances.” so it looks like he was offered due process and didn't avail himself of it. again ripped from Volokh
Or, as Justice Scalia put it more recently:“Where the Government accuses a citizen of waging war against it, our constitutional tradition has been to prosecute him in federal court for treason or some other crime. Where the exigencies of war prevent that, the Constitution’s Suspension Clause, Art. I, § 9, cl. 2, allows Congress to relax the usual protections temporarily. Absent suspension, however, the Executive’s assertion of military exigency has not been thought sufficient to permit detention [or, by extension, execution] without charge. No one contends that the congressional Authorization for Use of Military Force, on which the Government relies to justify its actions here, is an implementation of the Suspension Clause Posted by: willow at September 30, 2011 05:00 PM (h+qn8) 222
"I credit him with not changing the apparatus put in place by his predecessor. The same apparatus that he complained about before he was elected and the same predecessor he blamed for pursuing the war on terror.
In short congratulations to President Obama for not fucking up something that is already working, even while being a hypocrite about it." He didn't change policies, but his administration is a lot better at executing them. (heh heh) Bush was a poor decision maker, or at least seemed to be getting bad advice w/r/t pulling the trigger on terrorists. Knock on wood, but we seem to be doing much better on offense and on defense. I'm glad to see, however, some enthusiasm here for trying terrorists. We need to do something with KSM, even if it's a perfunctory military tribunal followed by flushing him down the toilet beard first. Posted by: Jordan at September 30, 2011 05:41 PM (XJYf4) 223
I'll be really happy when they drone that fat guy from California, the American. What a doofus. The only way he could get a woman is to have his "soldiers" kidnap her from her tent in AFghanistan.

I am confused. We just killed a terrorist/citizen and the democrats are high fiving each other. Four years ago we couldn't even listen in on his phone calls because it was a violation of privacy, but dropping a jdam on his head is perfectly ok.

What is interesting is that overnight it has become accepted that the terror at Fort Hood executed by Nidal Hasan is now an al Qaeda plot of Anwar al-Awlaki.
The Army (or this Administration) never seemed to accept it before, but now it is accepted as fact. Posted by: Barney Frank at October 01, 2011 11:13 AM (e8kgV) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0517 seconds. |
