Claim: Infrared Thermometers Relied Upon To "Prove" Greenhouse Gas Warming... Actually Are Specifically Calibrated To Not Measure Greenhouse Gas Warming

They are calibrated to essentially ignore background radiation due to CO2 and H2O re-emitting heat. This is apparently what permits them to scan long distances-- they need to be set to avoid that sort of thing in order to take the temperature of a large mass of air.

But Global Warming scientists have long claimed the additional heat detected by IR thermometers must be evidence of greenhouse gas warming.

Not so, says the largest maker of such thermometers. The technology specifically excludes the measurements AGWers claim are being made.

Climate scientists had long believed infrared thermometers measured thermal radiation from the atmosphere and assumed it was ‘proof’ of the greenhouse gas effect (GHE). Their assumption was that infrared thermometers (IRT’s) were measuring ‘back radiated’ heat from greenhouse gases (including water vapor and carbon dioxide). But damning new evidence proves IRT’s do no such thing.

Now a world-leading manufacturer of these high-tech instruments, Mikron Instrument Company Inc., has confirmed that IRT’s are deliberately set to AVOID registering any feedback from greenhouse gases. Thus climate scientists were measuring everything but the energy emitted by carbon dioxide and water vapor.

One of the researchers involved, Alan Siddons, has analyzed the GHE for over six years. He has long condemned the practice of using IRT’s as a means of substantiating the increasingly discredited hypothesis.

"Science is the process of crash testing ideas: a scientist does not coddle an idea, or design tests to make it work. The scientist rams the idea into a brick wall head-on at 60mph, and knowledge is gained by examining the pieces. If the theory is solid, the pieces are from the wall."

EPA CO2 Endangerment Finding goes down the chutes …In response to a report that could lead to questions about the credibility of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, is calling for hearings to investigate. The report — from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the EPA — reveals that the scientific basis, on which the administration’s endangerment finding for greenhouse gases hinged, violated the EPA’s own peer review procedure.

In a report released Wednesday (at Sen. Inhofe’s request, dating back to April) the inspector general found that the EPA failed to follow the Data Quality Act and its own peer review process when it issued the determination that greenhouse gases cause harm to “pubic health and welfare.”

59 I'm lazy (so sue me), but does anyone happen to know what field of science the big pushers of global warming are from? I mean, are they "bench" scientists or are they modelers? Because in my field, there were always a bunch of clever computational types who would suck off of experimentalists' data and come up with ideas that really made little sense (because they didn't really understand the nature of the data they were playing with) but were slickly presented and got lots of play. Then it would take the serious bench scientists - usually biochemists - to clean up the mess afterwards.

But the modelers always got the high impact pubs and then would move on to model the next biological phenomenon that they didn't understand.

Depends. If the thermometers show the same temperature rise as more conventional devices, it actually slays the AGW myth, since the greenhouse gases have caused no impact. Then it would mean there is "global warming" (though likely just normal climactic variation, see Little Ice Age, et al.), and not a damn thing that we do (or at least can identify that we have done) makes a difference.

Yes, but the disconnect is that the AGW models appear to rely on these components of increased temperatures (as discriminated from background sources) to measure the effects of so-called AGW. The makers of these instruments specifically disclaim that these instruments can measure what the proponents of the models claim to have measured.

So regardless of what temperatures they measured, the measurements cannot be used in these models with any expected reliability.

This and the recently linked video progression of charts (ice core data IIRC) that shows that the classic hockey stick chart is but a mere blip in the history of data that extends well before humans could have had any possible impact on temperatures (well before the age of industrialization), should be about all that is needed for even the most scientifically challenged mind to understand that, at best, the question is not settled.

89 I would like to propose a solution to the Fermi Paradox.

A friend of mine sailed on nuclear subs while in the Navy. He said something very interesting about submarines "Anyone on a sub can kill everyone on the sub." In other words people have to cooperate on submarines because they are all vulnerable to each other. Sub crews are carefully selected to insure that they don't self destruct. The fact that one crew member can kill the whole crew comes from the technological multiplier of being on a vessel with critical vulnerabilities; open the wrong valve and the entire ship sinks below its crush depth. Everyone on the sub knows what the critical valves are, and anyone could open one.

If you graph the power of an average individual over the history of mankind you see that power rising with civilization. What happens when the power of an individual becomes great enough that "anyone on the planet can kill everyone on the planet?" Governments cease to be effective at that point. The 'power' of a government is really its ability to coerce individuals into behaving the way the government wants. When individuals are too powerful to coerce governments cease to work.

I suspect that this is the real problem which befalls intelligent species and why the Fermi Paradox exists.

91 OK.... don't get all excited here folks...
Every gas molecule gives off IR Radiation in very specific bandwidths. As they contain more energy (are 'warmer'), this radiated energy increases.
IR thermometers are calibrated to measure very specific wavelengths... in bands where there is NOT a lot of absorbtion of the intervening Air Mass...
Now, as the bands for CO2 and Water Vapor overlap, they absorb all the energy in those specific bands... so you CANNOT use them to measure, as the radiation from a distant source, isabsorbed by the closer molecules (and this is also why adding more CO2 will do nothing, all the energy in those bands is already absorbed by existing CO2/Water Vapor... to add heat you would have to add energy...).
HOWEVER... molecules ALSO transfer energy though conduction... so a CO2 molecule absorbs energy, and passes it through CONDUCTION to other molecules it 'rubs' against... transfering energy to that Molecule... which eventualy gets to the Molecules giving off the wavlength the IR thermometer IS measuring...
ergo... these IR's are still acurately measuring the temperature change of the atmosphere... just not the CO2 IN the atmosphere...
Don't do what the Left does... and scream about a 'proof' that does not really exist.

How do you square this,

"ergo... these IR's are still acurately measuring the temperature change
of the atmosphere... just not the CO2 IN the atmosphere..."

with this,

[n]ow a world-leading manufacturer of these high-tech instruments, Mikron Instrument Company Inc.,
has confirmed that IRT’s are deliberately set to AVOID registering any
feedback from greenhouse gases. Thus climate scientists were measuring
everything but the energy emitted by carbon dioxide and water vapor."

It seems you are saying that these instruments can measure temperature effects of CO2/Water Vapor (not CO2 by itself) in contradiction with what the article claims (that the instruments were calibrated to avoid IR measurements of CO2).

Posted by: Flounder at September 28, 2011 02:40 PM (Kkt/i)

96 @ 91

Your argument doesn't lesson the issue. The point was that they thought they were measuring CO2 warming affects directly and inputting that into the models. Even if the atmosphere is warming there is no way they could have linked it to CO2, thus CO2 can not be said to have impacted global warming in thier models, ergo the models and the theory is based on total fiction.

IOW AGW'rs are peddling snake oil

Posted by: sol at September 28, 2011 02:44 PM (Kkt/i)

100 So we've got thermometers, showing warming.

The Thermometers are special ones to avoid seeing any warming from CO2 and water vapor.

Therefore, the only answer is this warming can only be from CO2 and water vapor... because that is what the Global Warming theory requires to be true.

Hey, this is no more faulty than their other "science" they're just throwing out the data points that don't fit their theory; why can't they do this again when they've done exactly this for decades?

"Science is the process of crash testing ideas: a
scientist does not coddle an idea, or design tests to make it work. The

knowledge is gained by examining the pieces. If the theory is solid, the
pieces are from the wall."Posted by: Drumwaster at September 28, 2011 01:41 PM (vBWRl)

Posted by: No Whining at September 28, 2011 03:13 PM (0AClR)

108 I advise caution on this one. I don't see a definitive source in the links that proves that the thermometers are being mis-used by climate scientists. All I found was a pamplet from Mikron Instrument Company that saysIR thermometers can be set for particular spectralrange to avoid interference from atmospheric gases, not that they are all set to avoid atmospheric gases.
And what exactly were the climate scientists actually claiming to measure? I don't see a source on that either.
It is an extraordinary claim. It may be true, but I would like to see better sources.

110 Now the flat earther climate changers will claim that climate change is much worse and the world much warmer BECAUSE the IRTs DON'T measure greenhouse gasses.

Posted by: eaglewingz08 at September 28, 2011 03:44 PM (na8r5)

111 @108 - Good points. The linked article is a somewhat sensationalist summary of the more in-depth discussion of the points raised in the links in the linked article (not necessarily for general consumption).

However, as a point that AGW is not settled science, the ultimate discussion (if you follow the links) raised more important and compelling points than what the thermometer manufacturer's brochure merely does.

Posted by: Flounder at September 28, 2011 03:45 PM (Kkt/i)

112 Like the statistical flaws that led to the "Hockey Stick" graph, this shows that climate scientists are not trained broadly enough to understand the tools they're using to explore their field. Aside from showing the false arguments that are laced through AGW theories, it also shows the weakness of the peer review process in this area. This sort of technical flaw should have been caught long ago if the review panels were staffed by a wide variety of scientists instead of just by other climate scientists. It's emblematic of the hermetically-sealed discussions that goes on in the AGW crowd that automatically discounts any contribution from anyone outside their clique.

114 Re: The NPR sidebar article

The author is so hopelessly inured to the belief of CAGW that, even though he admits confusion, even though he admits the skeptics are well-prepared, well-educated, knowledgeable and bring many facts to the table, the *core assumption* that CAGW is true is so strong that, in the end, he can only weakly propose a *new angle* to try to get those dirty deniers to toe the line and "Do What We Want," the ultimate battle cry of the left.

It's actually kind of frightening, in a way, looking at someone holding an irrational, unchallengeable belief that they aren't even *aware* is questionable.

The comments are, of course, dull-witted echoes of the same principle, shot through with spittle-flecked hate.

Note a detail we've seen before. Both the author and one of those he covered who studied this bizarre phenomenon of people who think for themselves, when faced with the cruel reality that these "deniers" are in fact rational, intelligent, and have the facts at hand - throw their hands up in confusion that such things can be.

What possible kind of life can you lead when you aren't even *aware* of the possibility that you may be wrong?

These guys are an embarresment.
They have data they won't share and let be reviewed. Somebody might find something wrong and hurt somebody's feelings - what a joke.
Global Warming should be called a hypothesis, not a theory, because frankly there isn't enought conclusive evidence that the whole deal is even close to being true.
And the science is never "settled", regardless of what that fat oaf Al Gore thinks.

It used to be that those who couldn't pass a science or engineering degree took a teaching degree. Those who failed in a teaching degree then took a journalism major. Now apparently thosewho fail in ajournalismmajor now take a climate 'science' degree because we can't train them to consistently say, "Would you like fries with that sir?"

119 Do these guys check anything?

No. I think I've told this story.

I was working with a group quality controlling surface marine observations from research vessels. The IMET instrument package provides high time resolution meteorological data to a data logger that records the data. This raw data is than converted to the proper units (speed, temperature, etc) when a calibration profile is applied.

We get the post-calibration data, and were working a particular ship, and things looked good. But on the next cruise, the temperature data looked odd, a little wonky. We inquired if there where any changes, and they discovered that the temperature sensor had been replaced, but that the calibration profile in the data logger had not been updated.

They went back to the raw data and applied the calibration and the data checked out.

Another IMET story involves a port in India, and an entire IMET mast being stolen right off the dock. An IMET mast is big. It's heavy. It takes some serious moxy to steal one off a dock...
