Okay a sudden business trip to Germany came up so I've had zero time for the ONT. So that means you get the minimal lo-cal lo-res skeletonesque ONT. Enjoy.

Oh and I'll be traveling for a while so this'll be my last ONT for about two weeks or so. See ya in a few.

And on a completely unrelated note....

Obama: Above Carter But Below the Mendoza Line

Sarah Dutton of CBS News crunched the numbers from the latest CBS/New York Times poll and found that of the last 6 presidents, only Jimmy Carter had worse CBS/NYT polling numbers at this point in his presidency. His approval is 7 points below his disapproval numbers — a minus 7 overall.
Only Jimmy Carter had a negative number at this point — minus 18.

I've missed the ONT the past couple of nights but I remember when air travel meant that you dressed nicely and you were treated like you weren't simply cattle being hauled to the next destination. Nowadays, if the upgrade isn't too expensive, I opt in. It's worth it just to be treated with a little bit of respect.

Back when we were first married, my husband bought me a Coach purse. It was a big effin' deal - I didn't have anything that nice.

Well, anyway, one of my cats had a thing for leather and he chewed on it. Not as badly as a dog would, but still bad enough.

I decided to never get such an expensive purse again.

Well, I was staying in a "guest house" at this research lab and I had to do my own cooking. I don't speak (or read) German (I tried, but it just didn't stick for me) and I was doing research in the day time. Then I'd run to the store trying to catch it before it closed, but I never had the Deutschemark you needed for teh grocery cart so I'd only be able to buy what I could carry in my arms. And I didn't understand the ordering system. And it seemed like all they had there was pork. Plus, it was hotter than Hades that month and I was relying on public transportation and walking.

I lost a lot of weight, actually. I think it was probably 15 or 20 lbs and that was despite the fact that I was drinking beer like a sailor scientist.

I always joke that the best part of my trip to Germany was Strasbourg,
France.

98 Mom had a pocketbook, but her handbag was bigger, for those trips with all five kids. Pocketbook was for evenings out with just dad.

Also, we had a Frigidaire, but we also had a Kelvinator at one time. We also never used a tissue, always a Kleenex. I think maybe product placement was more acute back then.

That article on Britishisms was pretty good. Didn't hit the ones I thought were the most obvious and hit some I think the writer was confused about. Overall, I think he was right on that Britishisms have been slowly but steadily working their way across the Atlantic. I've picked up a few thanks to the magic of the intarwebz.

The old idea that America and Britain were two nations seperated by a common language is, I think, increasingly less relevent. Now we aren't talking exactly alike, and their accents range from pleasant to fecking unintelligible, but overall I think the seperations in the language will narrow.

taken of him looking like a manly man. The guy might be compensating

He's ex-KGB and a ruthless Russian politican and thus he knows the importance of keeping up appearances. Lord only knows how many bodies he helped bury in East Germany while he was stationed there or how many journalists died under mysterious circumstances during his Presidency.

Trunk = Boot. You don't store stuff in a boot, you wear it on your feet. Trunk (a portable container) makes sense, boot doesn't.

Bonnet = Hood. OK, they're both head coverings, but hood is both shorter and manlier. Hood wins.

Wing = Fender. It's a car. It doesn't have wings because it's not a plane.

Petrol = Gas(oline). Gasoline is a petroleum product, but so is diesel. Gas (short for gasoline) is more specific. Gas wins.

Then there's the whole driving on the wrong side of the road thing...

Isn't "Cah Pahk" also a New Englandism? Anyway this one we'll grant to the Brits as less pretentious than the standard for non-Yankee Yanks. Same with gearbox. "Transmission" to me means a Joy Division song.

"Windscreen" works for a convertible, where some of the wind will get you.

I prefer headlights to lamps though.

315 My undeniable, indisputable proof that the right side of the road is the correct side of the road upon which to drive:

Most of the time spent driving is in a relatively straight line with the steering done using one hand, usually the side facing the door.

The free hand facing the center console is left free to do tasks normally associated with a commute- drink coffee, fiddle with the radio, adjust the climate control, load your handgun, etc.

For those who drive on the right (and correct) side of the road, this means that the right hand is free to perform these tasks; for those driving on the left side, their left hand is free.

The vast majority of the population is right handed. Therefore, those driving on the right will have little trouble performing non-driving tasks and thus will be more likely to have an event-free commute.

Those driving on the left will be forced to use their non-dominant, clumsy left hand, resulting in hot coffee being spilled on their crotch, the radio stuck on the Celine Dion tribute station, a 100 degree car interior, and accidentally shooting themselves in the leg causing a horrific accident. This assuming the Celine Dion music, burned genitals and unbearable hot car don't lead to suicide first.

Q.E. fucking D.

From the Politico article Drudge is headlining:The Obama administration chose not to ask the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to re-hear a pivotal health reform case Monday, signaling that it’s going to ask the Supreme Court to decide whether President Barack Obama’s health reform law is constitutional.[...]
“This confirms what I had already concluded: That the government is
confident that it’s going to prevail in the Supreme Court and would like
to have a decision sooner rather than later,” Dellinger told POLITICO.

[...]
But a Supreme Court ruling in the middle of a presidential election
could carry serious political risks, since a decision upholding or
striking the mandate has the potential to galvanize either Republicans
or Democrats.

Dellinger has it wrong. Obama thinks SCOTUS will strike it down. He wants the issue for the election to get his own base to turn out and to take the fire away from his opposition, most of whom are running on repealing Obamacare.

That reminds me, the last time I was at a pro game was the Oakland A's about 6 years ago. Only place you could have bottled beer was if you were up in the boxes, otherwise it was in a plastic cup.

So yesterday, forget which football game I was watching, I saw people in the stands with beer bottles. Thought it was some kind of a "law" or something that bottles could not be in the stands. Anybody know?

Really? I missed that...

About Vic, *sighs*. Actually, I was willing to give him a chance. Yes, his dog-fighting ring was deplorable (especially since I'm a dog person - I think they are better companions and friends than humans at times), but he served his time and the Iggles thought he was worth the effort to have on their roster (100 million dollar contract at that!). If he could have kept his nose clean for a few years and not engage in bitchy rants at the refs for, I don't know, doing their jobs, he could have rehabilitated his image. But now, even that is in doubt.

So sad to see people with such talent do these kind of things. Alas, success can ruin a man just as much as misfortune.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at September 27, 2011 12:24 AM (c0A3e)

533 Not counting character issues, Vick is deficient in many other facets of quarterbacking.

Like many athletes gifted with a ton of natural talent, he thinks the hard work is done. He doesn't seem particularly good at reading defenses, doesn't seem to know how to move in the pocket, and for his laser arm he makes some really bad throws.

Vick can be a one man highlight reel, but there's a lot of stinkers in between

I think we should still burn out the places that the Viet Cong are hiding.
Ok, starting at a north-south line now known as MLK Avenue, start the burning at a point near Central Ave south and north till the intersections of Ninth St and Lawrence Rd. Proceed burning East of that line till Mahoning Rd or Young Ave, whichever comes last. South of 3rd St N, the Eastern edge of the burn would be either Hartford Ave or Belden Ave if we are going for the big burn.
No one who now lives in those areas besides the elderly or the Greeks or the few Pollacks who remain would even care.
Commence burning

544 Joe Montana was small for a QB, had mediocre arm strength and wasn't blazing fast. The 49ers drafted him in the 3rd round in 1979, and when he reported to camp a lot of his teammates thought he was one of the kickers trying out

He did have a quick mind, great instincts, and a shitload of confidence. Bill Walsh's new West Coast offense was taylor made for him as it required brains and accuracy more than distance and velocity

There was once a QB also with all the tools and an arm that was matched only by Bret Favre. But Jeff George is forgotten because he was a total pussy

548 Here’s another sign of the stalled economy -- New Yorkers are ditching their coke habits.Cocaine-related emergency-room admissions, overdoses and requests for rehab have declined since the economy started its 2008 decline, according to data obtained by The Post.“It is sort of on a slight but steady downward trend,” said Dr. Stephen Ross, director of NYU’s Langone Center of Excellence on Addiction. “I treat patients in private practice. Many cocaine addicts tell me stories they don’t have enough money to buy it anymore.”There were 478 “accidental” deaths in which cocaine was a factor, typically overdoses, in New York City in 2006, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. That number plunged to just 274 in 2010.This has got to be hurting the drug cartels, which may explain the current wars in Mexico

My first 25 years were spent in Dallas. Much has changed. I grew up among farms and ranches inside the city limit. Used to walk to school and back down cowpaths at times, and came out to recess looking at all the longhorns on the other side of the fence. Plano, TX was a quaint little place in the middle of nowherethatpretty much had a feed store and a gas station going for it. 2010 census listed 260,000 people living there.
But Dallas remains a great town. They still have Fletcher's corn dogsat the State Fair,Blue Bell ice cream, amazing pecan pies, beautiful women, the Dallas Cowboys, good deals on real estate, and business-led attitude bent on success. It's still a town that's going places.

Evening MM's from Calibonya,
Since the election cycle (aka: The Socialist Death March) has begun as of today, I am thinking under the orange tree of ways in which we can keep from tearing each other's hearts outwith the ticking of the count-down clock. If possible, we can mark down key traits we (meaning just you and I) want to see developing in the mainplayers for the ticket nod. Serious, just make your list of the major points that you believe will get this country back on the right course, then watch thedebates, listen to the way they present themselves, profile the body language if you must and then assign value to how well they are alligned to your major points, and then....VOTE!!!

Everyone on this site for the most part is on the same page, front AND back.
I do not want us to devolve into bitter in-fighting over the nuance of this or that. We ALL!.. after all is said and done want a candidate that will crush and I do mean CRUSH the SCFOMF with a force that will put the anti-American Soc/Comm hippy/dippy crew below ground for the remainder of the 21st century. We all want that, and we should ALL work towards that end....dang....where did that come from...now back under the orange tree...

Austin has another one that's not so awful. A "Cesar Chavez", too.

I predict that as people understand that King was more pro-Communism, oops, pro-"democratic socialism" than pro-black, MLK streets will become more prevalent amongst the tony suburbs where black people simply aren't to be found. The MLK Streets in the black neighbourhoods will be left to rot, quietly, like so many blocks of old Detroit.

but the first time i saw him was for back pain. we finally figured out i had broken my back 4 years earlier, when i had assumed I'd thown it out, babied myself a little, and then hadnt come in for an x ray till i was remodeling the old farm, and was sleeping on the floor. evidently my back hated it and started screaming and we discovered that the bad wreak i had been in years before had been so much worse than i imagined.

No, the Cartel War has been going on much longer. Felipe Calderon ramped it up when he came into office in 2006 and I believe the current theory is his administration is under the influence of one of the cartels (I forget which one...either the Zetas, Sinaloa or Gulf cartels) using the government to sweep away their enemies.

572 I don't think there is an MLK Drive in the whole country where you could take your kids for a walk.

And there's damned few places named "Cesar Chavez"-anything where I'd care to spend much time.....

.....and it's not because I hate and/or fear blacks or Hispanics. It's because of the damned leftists. I wouldn't wan't to hang out near Alinsky Plaza, or Che Guevara Street, or 'Uncle Joe' Stalin Boulevard, either -- but those are obviously problematic.

It's when you get to people like MLK, Republican, who "had a dream" that his "four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of
their character," that things get surreal. Why his namesake thoroughfares are planted in the most segregated, dangerous, xenophobic parts of town should be a public shame.....and they're put there by race-baiting leftist "community organizers" and separatist politicians in order to exalt judgment by color, rather than follow MLK's dream of rendering such distinctions immaterial.

We tend to snicker at the "Kum-ba-ya" aspect of many lefty movements, even if in our hearts we might agree with them.....because we well know that such impulses are easily perverted. We've seen it. We've seen a political party who embraced an Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan who filibustered Civil Rights lead its Congress to institutionalize racism in the laws of the United States in the name of a preacher of the opposing party who called for a world beyond racism.

MLK Drive, Avenue, Road, Street, or Boulevard could be a safe and pleasant place as a marker of how far we've come as a nation; thoroughfares with the same name could be a safe and inspiring way to mark how far we aspire to go; but the current places named for MLK curdle in the hypocritical perversion of those who would rob while claiming to help. It's no wonder that they are centers of violence and crime, stemming from the violence and crime done to the ideals for which they purport to stand.

Posted by: RovingCopyEditor at September 27, 2011 02:02 AM (gdlLS)

587 Since it's late at night and I'm not quite ready to shut up quite yet....

Had an odd experience in Atlanta some years back. I was there for a convention, and my belt went "spung". So I'm trying to find a new belt in a strange city.

Now cities of all sorts have "good parts" and "bad parts", and even with a car, I didn't want to accidentally drive off into some "bad part". So I'm using local searches and come up with a Macy's nearby. "Cool," thinks I -- "Macy's is a tad upscale, so it's not going to be next to 'Kracevic's Drug Shack', 'Salvatore's Murder for Hire', or 'Paddy and Mick's Attempt at Fine Grub'."

I drive to the mall, and there's some sort of "Unity Carnival" going on at the end I originally was going to enter, so I pulled around and parked by another mall entrance and went in. Found a map, started trudging toward the Macy's. Was so distracted by keeping my pants from falling down that I went about two football-fields' worth of distance before I realized that I was the only white guy in sight.

Only. White. Guy. In. Sight.

I'm enough of a Californian (AKA "clueless") that my initial reaction was bemusement. I've been the only white guy in sight in Taipei; I've been the only white guy in sight in Fiji....it's not like I'm a local, duh.

Found the Macy's, found a belt that would work, paid for it at a cashier's station where there was just a bit more amusement than you'd expect and put it on in a dressing room. Walked out feeling a bit more confidence than when I'd walked in.....except for that odd bit about the only-white-guy-in-sight. It wasn't that anyone was unfriendly or hostile or rude, but I stuck out.

I checked out a few things on the way back to my car. Some styles were different, some pitches were different. Everything in the mall was 95% the same as a mall in California.....but only 95%. I'd been in malls in Minneapolis, Seattle, and Miami that were 99.44% the same.....

And it hit me. Malls in California were upscale or downscale -- if the mall had a JC Penney's, it might be in a white area, a Hispanic area, a Vietnamese area, a black area, on the border of a couple, or in the middle of a bunch. Similarly, a Macy's would pull more upscale patrons from a wider area, but they'd have a mix of their own. I'd never been in a place before where there was an upscale-segregated mall. The locals probably think of "the White Macy's" and "the Black Macy's" -- however bizarre this may seem.

Since I didn't get into too much trouble and wasn't injured along the way, it's easy for me to say that this was an interesting and rewarding experience. Fundamentally, though, it's a wake-up call that race relations are not always what you'd expect from what you experienced growing-up.

Can you believe Sly Stone is homeless?

Yes. Anyone interested in the music industry 1950-90 must have Frederic Dannen's Hit Men on his / her shelf. His account of Motown is particularly wrenching. The music labels boned their artists hard.

Posted by: Boulder Toilet Hobo at September 26, 2011 11:43 PM (6GvAC)
Try William Knoedelseder's Stiffed. It gives you the real reason why the music labels boned their artists. Both books tell you just how sleazy the music industry is, and after working in radio, yeah, it is teh sleaze.

Seriously, everything went very smoothly and everyone was very nice. Another way of looking at it might be, "why weren't there any other white shoppers at this perfectly normal Macy's store?" -- but, then, there were many other stores in the mall that showed a different aesthetic. Rastafarian-type berets; formalwear with odd flourishes (lilac cummerbund?); ornate feathered hats for women.....There wasn't anything wrong, it's just that I was a stranger in a strange land.

Morning all (jeez, I said goodnight at 10:00PM).

That is one sick "commercial" (what's the product/service?). Reminds me of something you'd see in "National Lampoon" circa 1974.

By the way, one of the commenters noted that the husband looked exactly like the neighbor. Really don't have the strength to watch that again to confirm it.

It was the neighbor. She was fucking around. Notice that husband and wife had seperate beds.I laughed my ass off. And those tits were literally to die for.

652 Thoughts on Bookface.

But since when did Google become the good guy? And since when did Google+ get any praise? Google+ is a giant piece of shit.

653 And am I the only one lacking a "newsticker"?

Do I have it turned off?

It sure as hell isn't on my profile.

656 Guess I'm going to have to hold off on buying that Transformers 3 DVD since apparently it's a bare bones release and the "loaded with extra crap" version won't be out util later in the year.

658 I shall have to pick up a bag this weekend in tribute.

659 Oh, and the new Superman #1 from DC Comics comes out this Wednesday.

If you want to buy ten copies of some piece of shit that's not going to gain any value whatsoever from a company that's just looking for any old cheap gimmick to goose sales for a couple of months.

660 Speaking of comics, Chris Muir's women in Day By Day are starting to look weird again.

Posted by: Robert at September 27, 2011 07:21 AM (4ixH5)

661 I'd love to see a comic that combined Chris Muir's right-wing libertarian streak with 9 Chickweed Lane's Brooke McEldowney's eye for hot beyotches.

671 And if I can make one observation, in the New Tone Bake Sale item on the side bar? Asians are supposed to pay the most.

The pricing should be...

Asians - $2.50
Whites - $2.00
Latinos - $1.85 with a sliding scale depending on complexion and English language skills.
Blacks - $1.50
Indian - $1.25
Women receive an extra $0.10 cents off.
