Sunday Morning Non-Book Open Thread

As I was getting ready to watch a parade of leftists and the MFM (BIRM) on the Sunday shows blame the S&P downgrade on everyone but the actual parties responsible, I went back and refreshed my memory of the timeline.

  • February 14 - President Obama releases his FY12 budget. While making the usual false claims about "responsibility" and "shared sacrifice", this budget did nothing to address our long term fiscal problems. This is the budget that would ultimately be rejected 97-0 in the senate.

  • April 5 - The House GOP "Path to Prosperity" budget is released and met with howls from the left.

  • April 13 - Obama gives that awful, partisan speech castigating Paul Ryan and the House budget plan. A sample:
[The House GOP plan] is a vision that says up to 50 million Americans have to lose their health insurance in order for us to reduce the deficit. And who are those 50 million Americans? Many are someones grandparents who wouldnt be able afford nursing home care without Medicaid. Many are poor children. Some are middle-class families who have children with autism or Downs syndrome. Some are kids with disabilities so severe that they require 24-hour care. These are the Americans wed be telling to fend for themselves.

  • April 15 - Jay Carney, in reiterating the administration's call for a "clean" debt limit increase, said it is "imperative" that a debt-limit vote not be "held hostage to any other action, because of the consequences of not raising the debt ceiling."

  • April 18 - Standard & Poor's warns of a potential downgrade stating, in part:
We view President Obama's and Congressman Ryan's proposals as the starting point of a process aimed at broader engagement, which could result in substantial and lasting U.S. government fiscal consolidation. That said, we see the path to agreement as challenging because the gap between the parties remains wide. We believe there is a significant risk that Congressional negotiations could result in no agreement on a medium-term fiscal strategy until after the fall 2012 Congressional and Presidential elections. If so, the first budget proposal that could include related measures would be Budget 2014 (for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, 2013), and we believe a delay beyond that time is possible.

Standard & Poor's takes no position on the mix of spending and revenue measures the Congress and the Administration might conclude are appropriate. But for any plan to be credible, we believe that it would need to secure support from a cross-section of leaders in both political parties.

  • July 19 - The House passed the "Cap, Cut and Balance" act (CCB) and sends it to the Senate where it is tabled. CCB is the only legislation ever introduced in this process that may have prevented S&P from downgrading US sovereign debt.

So as you can see, the downgrade was clearly due to GOP intransigence, especially the tea party caucus in the House. I don't think I even need to watch the Sunday shows now.

GOP jobs plan targets federal regulations

By
Erik Wasson - 08/06/11 11:50 PM ET

After
focusing for months on the deficit, Republicans are preparing a jobs pivot of
their own in September by moving to roll back and limit new
federal regulations.

The GOP never starts out on
the right foot. Just like their negotiation strategy they always start with a
half-assed lose and negotiate into a full loss. Instead of roll back this
head line and lead paragraph should be screaming about the evil rethugs who are
pressing legislation to eliminate whole agencies and ALL of their associated
regulations and employees. There is, however, one small bright spot in this
thing they are proposing.

The GOP will make a major push this fall for the REINS Act,
which would require all major regulations to get a vote in Congress.

That would be good, but they
will negotiate it away. In addition, when a commie is in the WH it doesnt matter
what the law is. He will rule by executive fiat and Congress will do nothing.
The rest of the stuff they have already tried like the supposed cost benefit
analysis. The numbers the bill sponsors put in their bills were, at best, pure
fantasy.

She wants him primaried but
one thing she doesnt mention here. He is on the short list to go on the
infamous super committee. Supporters will point to his high ACU rating last
year. For some odd reason all the Republican RINOs had good ratings last year.
However in 2008 he had an 80. Keep in mid, all it takes is one R vote on this
committee and we will have tax increases and phony cuts or huge cuts in
defense.

9 CCB is the only legislation ever introduced in this process that may have prevented SP from downgrading US sovereign debt.

That can not be repeated often enough or loud enough. Throughout this entire debate the MFM media (including Fox) only quoted "part" of the rating agencies wording on the debt ceiling debate, and NOT the major portion which said get the spending under control or else. In short, they lied bu omission.

The common story from EVERY news agency was Republicans will not compromise.

Yes it would be nice if we did have a free press.

12 --As I was getting ready to watch a parade of leftists and the MFM (BIRM)
on the Sunday shows blame the SP downgrade on everyone but the
actual parties responsible,

There's only 1 party "responsible" for downgrade (other than the ratings agencies and their asinine political bullshit) and that is the Indonesian. The downgrade, if taken seriously, says nothing more and nothing less than the fact that th US is not a AAA nation as it has an active, aggressive traitor holding the power of the Executive branch (and seemingly unrestricted by any silly, old laws that America might have made or make) who can, singlehandedly, drive this nation to default. The Indonesian intentionally and directly caused this downgrade by threatening to have the US default on its debt if the debt-limit wasn't raised (as if finding $30 billion/month out of receipts of over $200 billion/month would have posed any problem, whatsoever). Barky kept on with this un-Constitutional threat of defaulting on our debt (a threat he was prohibited from even making because of the 14th amendment), the pussies and retards in the GOP did nothing about it (not even explaining how un-Constitutional that sort of speech from the White House was) and the downgrade then became the obvious case that the US' neck was under the boot of the Indonesian Imbecile and that that meant that this nation could not be trusted in its debt - even though there was no possible way, given the assumptions the ratings agencies were using, that US would not have been made in a timely fashion UNLESS Barky intentionally set out to have us default.

The downgrade was nothing more than a comment about the America-hate spewing from the White House, whether S+P understood that point or not.

13 CCB is the only legislation ever introduced in this process that may have prevented SP from downgrading US sovereign debt.

That's not exactly true, since S+P just makes thier bullshit ratings up on the spot. It's all about what S+P FEELS - as they said so many times in their release. These sovereign debt ratings are not objective assessments. They're just the ratings agencies' opinions, and opinions with absolutely awful past performances, at that. I don't think any of these ratings agencies ever caught any major move before it was on top of everyone.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at August 07, 2011 08:44 AM (G/MYk)

14 Back when I learned English, "compromise" meant that two parties would each make concessions to achieve a shared goal.

So, for example, the Republicans agreed to raising the debt limit in exchange for the Democrats agreeing to cut spending.

But apparently the Democrats have redefined compromise to mean "we get everything we want" and any complaints mean you're being intransigent.

21 SP said yesterday that the House budget would have prevented a downgrade, but it (and the few other plans mentioned) would have to be accompanied by economic growth:

If you get to $4 trillion mentioned by the President in an April 13
speech, by the Bowles-Simpson commission and by Congressman Paul Ryan,
that along with economic growth wouldve done the trick to preserve the
triple-A, [Managing Director and Chairman of SP's sovereign ratings John Chambers] told Cavuto.

He doesn't mention CCB-- which he should have but this deals more with that $4T. Bowles-Simpson and the House budget also (obviously) have the other aspects of reform which SP said was necessary to prevent a downgrade, though Bowles-Simpson has some unobjectionable aspects as well.

23 But apparently the Democrats have redefined compromise to mean "we get
everything we want" and any complaints mean you're being intransigent.

That is the way it has been since the modern Democrat Party with FDR. And the Republicans simply do not negotiate. Your example:

So, for example, the Republicans agreed to raising the debt limit in exchange for the Democrats agreeing to cut spending.

That is what the Republicans STARTED with. You never start a negotiation with your end target. The Republicans should have started with we are not going to raise the debt lmit and we are going to cut spending until the deficit is zero. We are starting with the Obama pork bill and working our way down from that. If you don't like it, tough, we will shut down the government including cutting the money for WH budget.

And they should have acted like hardcore union goons during the meetings.

Instead, Boner cried and whined and gave up. McConnell never even got in the picture.

Remember, the 2012 budget and the debt limit WERE the hill to die on when the CR was debated. Instead, we gave up again and got our bag of magic beans and another shit surrender committee.

26 I can't stress enough that S+P's ratings (and the other agencies, too) have very little to do with the actual budget numbers. They aren't running any algorithms or models (with any accuracy) or anything - outside of trivial analyses that anyone with a calculator can do in ten minutes. They don't much care about any of the numbers and they can't reaonably forecast what's going to happen more than a year into the future, either. They are just making their ratings up based on their FEELINGS and their political bent.

Anything S+P says about what would have stopped the downgrade and wouldn't have is bullshit because they just decided on a whim to downgrade the US, anyway - which, as I've been pointing out over and over, is utterly meaningless in that the dollar is the very foundation of the global financial and trade systems. A yardstick must always measure a yard. After all, if the US were to default, who around the world would be left standing? The US would be fine - as we wouldn't be paying out trillions, but the rest of the world would collapse and be for sale for pennies, literally.

There's a lot of apocalyptic planning on yesterday's threads, but no one mentioned adopting a dog. Sure, you gotta feed them, but home invaders hate dogs and you can go out in a flash mob with a properly trained pit bull and nobody will come near you.
You can feed an adopted dog virtually any type of human, alive or freshly killed. Their relatively short digestive tracts allow for consumption of foods that might not otherwise meet the smell test.
Adopt an abandoned pit bull and assure your survival through the coming Flash Mob Apocalypse.
And great job, Andy. Bookmarked.

that centrist voters like centrist politicians. Unfortunately,
reality is more complicated. Centrist voters prefer honest politicians
who help them solve their problems. A second possibility is that he is
simply not up to the task by virtue of his lack of experience and a
character defect that might not have been so debilitating at some other
time in history. Those of us who were bewitched by his eloquence on the
campaign trail chose to ignore some disquieting aspects of his
biography: that he had accomplished very little before he ran for
president, having never run a business or a state; that he had a
singularly unremarkable career as a law professor, publishing nothing in
12 years at the University of Chicago other than an autobiography; and

issues.

I don't think that's overly dramatic anymore. He wants it all to go bad. He wants it all to go to hell. And that's an amazing thought.

It was ridiculous that a country with a $14 trillion deficit had a triple A rating. It would be like if I were flipping burgers at McDonald's, had a mortgage for a million dollar home, had 10 maxed out credit cards...and an 800 credit score. It was ridiculous.
I say we because I'm an American, and I voted for some of the crapweasels that did this to this country--George W. Bush and John McCain, for example.
The United States in no way deserved a triple A credit rating.

70 There's nothing more irritating than for a person who feels insulated to deliver the judgement of who deserves what on frugal, hardworking middle class people scraping by who had nothing to do with bringing down utter destruction of any nation.

The only people who deserve to be downgraded are the fucking spendaholic political leadership who sold us all to the global corporatists unsatisfied with raiding businesses, having taken on monopoly of nations in their ber-corporatist authoritarian game of RISK. There is no greater crime against our nation and against humanity than the destruction of the US Constitutional Government. Send the spendaholic politicians to a GITMO to repay society for all the corruption and fraud they've imposed as officials. That's "deserve". And since it ain't gonna happen, quit with all the "we deserve" shit.

When the public again votes for any politician whose record has already exploited powers beyond constitutional limitations, constitutional conservatives do not deserve what comes of more authoritarian abuses from our "INO Party" government, from the White House Dicktator, the Judicial Branch, and from the "special congress" Congress.

73 We're fucked until we kick President Petey out in 2012.

Most people labor under the false impression that WWII got us out of the Depression...mostly because the left and the media (but I repeat myself) use it for their Keynesian rationale.

The economy didn't start to get back on track until we stopped spending on the war. Three things happened that sparked our post-WWII economy 1) The war ended. which stopped the drain of resources and labor out of the economy. 2) The Bretton Woods agreement which ended the tariff war and the disastrous Smoot-Hawley Act 3) Most importantly FDR DIED!!!

Businesses sat out investing during FDR's reign of terror because they had no clue as what the fuck he was going to do next. He took the "throw the spaghetti against the wall" approach to policy. Polls at the time showed that business would not invest because of high taxes and policy uncertainty. Sound familiar??

When Truman came in, top corporate marginal rates went from 90% to 38%, and top individual marginal rates went from 94% to 86%, and the economy took off.

We keep hearing from the left and the media (again, I repeat myself) that the Bush tax cuts added to the deficit. That is absolute fucking nonsense. We had record revenues to the Treasury. it was the fucking spending that was out of control.

Does this sound familiar too?

Along with this AA+ rating SP should rate politicians by name, one by one so that the blame can be properly distributed. It wouldweigh theiramount of power and the time they've been in office. It would take into account the cost the passing of programs creates, the authorship of a program, and the votes that enhanceor diminish solvency and sustainability: Examples:
Ron Paul: AAA
Rand Paul: AAA
Michelle Bachman: AAA
Rick Perry: AAA
Allen West: AA+
Paul Ryan: AA+
Mitt Romney: AA
John Boener: A+
Mitch McConnell: A
George W. Bush: A
John McCain: A
Jimmy Carter: C
Harry Reid: F
Barney Franks: Z
You may ask why isn't Jimmy Carter an F? He may not have been able to fix the problems started byJohnson (F) and made worse by Nixon (B) but he never caused the nation's to lose it's perfect rating. Two years from now we'll think stagflation wouldn't be such a bad deal. That's how bad Obama (no rating, that would be racist) is.
And this rating is using SP's metric that is neutral on how to reduce the debt, whether byincreasing taxes or cutting spending.
Myself, socialists should be shunned as charletans and thieves, and people like Nancy Pelosi should get a rating of TnF, for tar and feathering.

I will leave the chatter regarding the advisability of employing Special Operation men aboard a singular unit to the on-site commander making the decision.I will comment about the use of National Guard pilots in an operational unit. I flew this exact same helicopter, the CH-47 Chinook with the 1st Cavalry from Bear Cat, Republic of Vietnam.
Numerous guard pilots were called to active duty during this era, and as the company SIP (standardization instructor pilot) I certified them qualified in various operational requirements. On balance, the overwhelming majority of the pilots were well qualified, and conducted themselves on par with full-time active duty pilots.I assume the present day training requirements were as rigid as those during the Vietnam conflict, and have no reason to suspect a National Guard pilot was any less capable of successfully landing a crippled Chinook damaged by an RPG than the active duty pilot.
Surviving an RPG hit is problematic at best, and the best way to get past the sorrow is knowing the men aboard the machine were doing what they love to do, and that is soldier to the best of their ability.

Seriously. Have you ever seen him shed a tear? Laugh in an unforced, unself-conscious way? He gets angry, yes, and peevish, but other emotions are simply beyond him.
If he didn't have the fortunes of the world in his hands, his plight would be pitiable. As it is, it's something a media that's worth something should have picked up 4 or 5 years ago.

133 So after church this morning, we're having coffee in the fellowship hall. A retiree from NYC starts talking about the down grade with me (my husband had walked away) and what a mess we're in.

I mentioned I'm a member of the local Tea Party, and before I could say another word, he glared at me and said, "You and your Tea Party are the cause of the mess we're in. Until we raise taxes on corporations and businesses, things will never get better." I replied, "Do you see my husband standing over there? He's a small business owner, who only in the past few months has been able to turn his company around and begin hiring again. If you raise taxes on his business, he'll have to begin letter employees go."

The guy sneered, "I'm retired from Wall Street. I think I know a thing or two about how the economy works."

I'm still angry. My husband said later he'd have given anything to have been with me when the guy went after me. At least now I've identified another lib in the church.

Her blouse sleeve keeps falling down, revealing a black bra strap. She pulls up the sleeve, but it slips back down right away.

I keep hoping she'll pull a Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance", and just unsnap her bra and take it off under the blouse while talking to the interviewer.

Is that too much to ask?

The Don Surber challenge! He wrote a check for $100, sent it to the Treasury and then challenged people like Barky and others who advocate higher taxes to make a similar voluntary payment, a 'put your money where your mouth is' call-out. So far the only thing where their mouth is, is their mouth.

I love to have these conversations online. Because I'll the link the Treasury's gift link where our Know-Betters can make a generous gift if they're oh-so-concerned about not being taxed enough. This usually shuts them up. If not, they get piiiiiiised and start going off on how I'm 'distracting from the issue'. Why's that I say? Because they can't put their money where their mouth is? That's usually followed up by how I, like all conservatives, lack compassion. At which point I discuss Arthur Brooks' book....but not before I give them a little rope to hang themselves. I tell them that conservatives give more by way of time/money to both secular/non-secular causes. I leave it at that. Without fail the response is always the same..."well that's because conservatives make more money". At which point I get to point out my favorite statistic of that entire book....conservatives makes six percent less than their liberal counterparts yet they still give more

1. Government Data dumps both weekly and monthly (as recently and "unexpectedly" demonstrated, interest conflicted, contrived road apples)

174 Hoo boy. You guys are going to LOVE this (from the Sunday fish wrap):

Obama proved his love for country

Remember the story of Solomon who, in his wisdom, ordered that the baby be cut in half?
Two
women, both claiming to be the babys mother, came to King Solomon so
he could adjudicate the issue. He ordered that the baby be cut in half
and divided between the women.
One woman said that was fair but
the true mother, knowing that her child would be killed with this
solution, immediately offered the whole living baby to the other woman.
Seeing this act of love, Solomon recognized who the real mother was.
I
was reminded of this story during the recent debt ceiling controversy
in Washington. It was clear that many opponents of the president were
not focused on keeping the baby, our country, alive and healthy.
They
wanted to win, to fight against anything President Obama proposed,
regardless of the outcome, even if that meant dealing a severe blow to
our economy and ruining our standing in the world economic community.
Some
people have said that Obama caved, that he is not a strong and
principled leader. I think that, in agreeing to compromise, he showed
not only wisdom but his love and commitment to the health of this
country.

181 As a palate-cleanser to Gail Scarbrough's idiocy (from the fish wrap):

In Kathleen Parkers Aug. 4 column, she rails against the Tea Party, but the lady doth protest too much, methinks.
She
calls the Tea Party a gang and compares them to kidnappers. Their
ransom? The terrorist-like demand that the federal government live
within its means.
Horrors! Ms. Parkers real worry has nothing to do with kidnappers but with her beloved big government.
Ms.
Parker then dons a cloak of reasonableness and compares runaway federal
spending to a familys purchase of a home. Both involve assuming debt,
do they not? She seems unaware of just how poor is that analogy, and
shes hoping her readers are just as clueless.
When a family
assumes a mortgage, they borrow from an independent source, generally a
bank. The bank will not loan to someone who annually takes on more and
more debt.
When the federal government borrows, it essentially
loans the money to itself by issuing treasury bonds. The federal
government has been taking on more debt, increasing the debt ceiling for
many years.
Does Ms. Parker point out these dramatic
differences? As every conscious taxpaying adult is now well aware, our
governments debt is into the trillions, amounting to over $30,000 for
each of us.
The Tea Party is not the evil gang the liberal press paints it to be.
Their
mission is simple and true. They expect our federal government to
abide by the Constitution and to conduct the countrys affairs in a
fiscally responsible manner. Wheres the fuss in that? Indeed, I think
the lady doth protest too much.

They basically got paid big to move money around. Contributing absolutely nothing to the economy. That movie amuses the hell out of me cause its so true to life. I suppose thats an entry point job, and past that point I don't know what else they do, but it seems to me places like Goldman sachs are full of floors of worthless overconfident people who do nothing but screw people all day. TOTUS said a couple years back (apparently when TOTUS was malfunctioning), that he thought we'd be thanking him. Well, we need an RNC ad comprised of small business owners where there's just a continual loop of them saying, "You have it backwards, we think YOU should be thanking US. We employ. Permanently. Unlike 3 month construction jobs"

197 The Christie article in the sidebar is really worth reading. It's long, but points out the dangers of a personality such as Christie. And, he IS a personality. He says things that we'd all like to say except that, when he says it...when he says "It's none of your business" it really IS our business.

He has allowed himself to believe his own PR and his ego has grown proportionately so. The trouble is that much of his PR is based upon, as the article calls it, his "bluster".

I like some of the stands he has taken but others I do not. I do not like that he has become somewhat of a bully. I stated that thought here a few weeks back and some jumped all over it with "That's exactly the type of person I want in the White House!".

Really?

Because I'm not being clever or ironic with the word "bully". I mean he is somewhat brutish.

He's perfect for NJ, but he is not perfect for entirety of this nation.

202 For those who would like to respond to people who bash on Texas' expanding debt under Rick Perry. Texas' debt increases have not been on a 'general unsecured obligation' basis like the federal government, but have been revenue/infrastructure bonds for highways, universities and the such

From the Texas Bond Review Board 2010 Annual Report

State DebtFor the fiscal year ending August 31, 2010 Texas total state debt outstanding increased by 10.9% to $37.82 billion compared to $34.08 billion at fiscal year-end 2009. This increase is primarily attributable to increased issuances of Revenue Finance System (RFS) debt by various colleges and universities, $1.50 billion issued by the Texas Transportation Commission and $1.02 billion in conduit debt issued by the Private Activity Bond Surface Transportation Corporation.

So Texas has been spending on infrastructure for a large, rapidly expanding state, and these issuances are secured by the projects/universities, and are not guaranteed by the state itself. Additionally, it has been only in the last 10 years that the State of Texas could finance highway construction with debt/bonds, which means that Texas' debt was unusually low due to this restriction prior to Perry taking office.

204 Oh My God.

Over at HA, they've got a piece from Maureen Dowd surprisingly upset about a movie Hollywood is making about Barky killing bin Laden, scheduled to come out....October 12, 2012.

In light of the loss of our SEALs in Afghanistan, take a deep breath and read this:

The moviemakers are getting top-level access to the most
classified mission in history from an administration that has tried to
throw more people in jail for leaking classified information than the
Bush administration.

It was clear that the White House had outsourced the job of manning
up the presidents image to Hollywood when Boal got welcomed to the
upper echelons of the White House and the Pentagon and showed up
recently to the surprise of some military officers at a C.I.A.
ceremony celebrating the hero Seals.

I felt the same way when he announced that he was meeting with them and where. Sure, he didn't use their names, but he was oh-so-happy to say when he was meeting with them. How difficult would it be for someone to wait nearby and watch who came and went from the meeting and identify who amongst them were SEALs and who were not?

I did just read, a moment ago, that there is some question as to whether those killed were the actual members who took out bin Laden. If that is the case, then they might be willing to tell their story if when Obama's pals spin it into his magic carpet ride.

I'm at a party and left to come in and post this. The folks here are saying that we could really be hurt if the currency is changed to the chinese currency or worse if the ECB insists that we convert our debt into another currency. Right now, if inflation comes we will be paying off our individual debts with cheaper and cheaper dollars. But if somehow our debt goes out of the dollar, folks are saying we'd be screwed. I'm thinking of the volume of my student loan debt but there are other people who not only have both their student loan debts but also a mortgage and some have the loan to start practices.

I'm curious what Monty and you think? Please don't make fun of me, the people here are seriously upset and making me a nervous wreck. I mean I said to them well you voted him in but somehow if we are all screwed it doesn't seem to matter does it?
