Old Message: Compromise and Bipartisanship Are Super-Important
Mew Message: It's Okay For Democrats To Play Political Games With The Debt Ceiling

Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer are voting for the bill, but they're not whipping votes.

Enter the fightin' fightin' progressives:

House Democrats dont want to carry Republicans water, though. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., said every Democrat who votes for the bill takes a Republican off the hook he urged colleagues to wait until Republicans put at least 200 votes on the board before we give them cover.

I love it. Don't vote for it. Let's shut it down, then.

Allah guesses that as few House members as possible will vote "yea," and we might see some vote-switching based on whether it's safe to vote "nay" or not.

It's possible, still, some of these idiots might get a little too cute and vote it down.

And what will happen to the media's favorite value -- "compromise" -- then?

Oh, and it must be time for Sheila Jackson Lee to say something stupid. And maybe infected with unaware self-parody. Today she announced something awful to behold -- we are now witnessing "the tyranny of the minority."

28 The Dems -want- this bill to pass because that way they can stall the cuts mentioned in the bill in time for those "automatic spending cuts" can take place and lower defense spending.

Then they'll hop all over this commission and claim that the only thing that can be done is raise taxes.

What they're doing now is trying to make a big enough false stink about the bill that Republicans will think "Gee, the dems hate it, so we should vote for it." NO. The best thing they can do is shut the fucking thing down.

In this game of politics there shouldn't have been any compromise because it's not enough that we succeed, they must fail.

In Gifford's case, we pretty much know she has no idea what so ever what is in the bill. She is being used by her office staff and the Democratic Party. And why? They did not need her vote? Boehner is well-loved for his charm, his willingness to listen, and the fact that he rarely applies pressure on votes. He has built strong relationships with many of the freshmen and they appreciate him even with they disagree with him. The veteran lawmakers dislike some of his methods but they feel the same way because he runs a different type of operation than his predecessors. He does not scream or threaten them but rather ask how he can make major legislation better so that his members support it. It doesn't make him a good leader by any means, but he does what is necessary to keep them happy and he's mostly kind to them.

And in so doing, we took away the Democrats one and only talking point during the campaign - that Republicans were all crazy scary radicals ready to sell the country down the river. The last thing Democrats want to run on is their record for gods sake.

Is it all we wanted? No, but we were never going to get all we wanted. Does it do the next best thing - provide leverage for 2012? Yes it does. Does it motivate our base to GOTV so we can get the plan we really want after 2012? Hell yes. This is not a personality contest. Boehner is unskilled
at the job of Speaker, given this environment. He is the wrong man.
Even his best friend ought to tell him that. This is serious stuff. He
just screwed the pooch on the last of 6 MUST-PASS pieces of spending
(that the dems had to have to feed their machine) and we got NOTHING. I
like the guy, too. I'm sure he's a blast. But he sucks as Speaker.

Did I ever say it was personality contest? You said something about Boehner being ousted, and I expressed my doubts because of the things the rank-and-file members say about him. Note that I did not say whether I endorsed their feelings as an indication of whether he is a strong leader.

----------
This is my favorite sentiment of yours. This idea of "supporting the team and the coaches."
Then we might as well forget about primaries and just listen to our supperiors.
You're so concerned about this political game that you've lost site of actual policy. We boxed this guy into a corner, and this guy looks good, and that guy did this, and this bill changes the tone and a bunch of other shit THAT HAS NO ACTUAL EFFECT ON THE DIRECTION OF THE COUNTRY.
We are headed off a fucking cliff at high-speed and we just handed the train conductor another 2.5 trillion for what amounts to NOTHING. I don't give a shit about political theatre when we are about to crash and burn. Political theatre was for 10 years ago. We don't have time for this "long game" nonsense. It will be over before the "long game" begins. What is so hard to understand about this?
And explain to me how the Tea Party wanted to get everything all at once? Everything? The hell? Everything would have been entitlement reform, lowering taxes, a balanced budget ammendment and a host of other issues. We asked for some basic first step. You know, an actual cut. Not 34634573456 trillion dollars in year 1. Just something of consequence. Instead we get no cut. Let me repeat that, NO CUT. Next year at this time the federal government will be spending more than it is today. And yet you say we ask for everything. No, I just want SOMETHING.

338 Play long ball...

Ooohoh SO MANY CAPS. So I MUST TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY! You missed the introductory article on how *not* to sound crazy online didn't you?

My rebuttal.

1. The GOP is all long ball with no short game it's always about the next election. They would score a 160 on a par 3 because they were always setting up the next swing for the cup. When it finally went in, it would be by accident.

2. We are thinking long game. This long game we just bought into has much higher debt, almost certain downgrading, expensive interest payments, rising cost of money, and long term stagflation attached to it. Given the overall weakness of the economy the long game looks more and more like a real depression thanks to unrestrained spending and ultimately doing absolutely nothing about it. So by Nov 2012 we'll be fortunate to still have a Republic to vote in.

From here on out. It's better to get the crash done than to try to avert it.

1.5T out of the next budget. That's the extremist position.
500B that is the moderate sane compromise position and as about as little as you can possibly get by with and have any hope of averting DOOM!.

The Republicans can't manage to aim the overton window far enough to the right so that a solution that actually *might* avert disaster in within it; and suddenly that's our fault for being too extreme.

389 Well, that was fun....
Great news. Now, we can trim back spending with a machete during the budget process. And if our concerns aren't dealt with then, we can shut down the government. Well, we won't do that instead...
We'll wait until after the next election. And then we'll take the needed steps to reform government before everything crashes...
Unless we're close to midterms....
---------------
Someone isn't a team player.
I just wonder at what point we can actually do the necessary things to fix the country? Entitlement reform is NEVER going to popular. It's always going to put an election in doubt. Under these new rules of having to be a team player and think long game, at no point will it ever be acceptable to actually reform medicare and SS.

Houston, for the time being. My congressman is Judge Ted Poe.

That's how I feel too, and I was disappointed that the South Carolina delegation made a show of it and that Boehner's best friend cast the last vote (as a no). Yes, it's all part of the D.C. theater but McCarthy should make them vote and let the chips fall where they may. If it shows he miscalculated or that the no votes are showboating, then that's just the way it is.

Furthermore, I am much more willing to listen to a Republican lawmaker that who has detailed reasons as to why they supported/opposed because they felt it was the right thing to do. Then I can judge as best as I can whether they're being honest or not.

The fiends have gagged a generation of pacified fools
Bound by our greed a nation enslaved as corporate tools.
Arise and raze the legacy of their lies
To realize that this in itself is an ascension
Towards the day we revolt.
As the seeds you've cast away take hold
War will be born.
Rejoice, the age of the fall has begun
We'll dance as the palaces burn.
A shot gun blast into the face of deceit
You'll gain your just reward.
We'll not rest until the purge is complete
You will reap what you've sown.
My redemption lies in your demise.
In such a world as this does one dare to think for himself?
The paradox of power and peace will destroy itself
To know the truth and live in fear of no man.
To realize that this in itself is an ascension
Toward the day we revolt.
As the seeds you've cast away take hold
War will be born.
Rejoice, the age of the fall has begun

That means that the trigger would only be enacted to make up the
remaining $700 billion. Of that, $350 billion would come from defense

That's still unfair, but it's better than all-or-nothing. I also question whether Congress would really follow the rules on this.

548 In other words, let's say Congress can agree on $500 billion in cuts.
That means that the trigger would only be enacted to make up the
remaining $700 billion. Of that, $350 billion would come from defense
and $350 billion would come from Medicare."
That's still unfair, but it's better than all-or-nothing. I also
question whether Congress would really follow the rules on this.

sure, if one is not deploying anytime during the next two years, it's great.

sure,
if one is not deploying anytime during the next two years, it's great.

They have a section in there related to military personnel and the Republicans on the Armed Services Committee checked and doubled-checked before they signed-off on this.

But I have my doubts about the trigger mechanisms coming into play or even being enforced. Who's going to say they must enforce it when there is no third-party to enforce it? They never completely followed it before, so why would they start now?

Even if they did abide by the rules, the sequestration takes place over several years and the president would be able to protect their priorities.

572 5. Omerta

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward.
Whoever cannot take care of themselves without that law is both.
For a wounded man shall say to his assailant,
'If I live, I will kill you. If I die, You are forgiven.'
Such is the rule of honour.

Broken the paradigm an example must be set
Invoke the Siren's song and sign the death warrant.
This id what has been wrought for 30 pieces of silver
The tongues of men and angels bought by a beloved betrayer.
I am the result what's better left unspoken
Violence begins to mend what was broken
You've been talking, I've been all ears.
Words meant to dwell in darkness shall never see the light of day
Words can be broken, so can bones
Execute the mandate
Mouth full of dirt.
Your name is removed from the registry
St. Peter greets with empty eyes then turns and locks the gate.
I am the result what's better left unspoken
Violence begins to mend what was broken
You've been talking, I've been all ears
Omerta.
Cheaply venal, stupidly verbose
A slip of the tongue, a slit of the throat
Six feet under with no marker
Keep my name from your mouth forever.
Free speech for the living, dead men tell no tales
Your laughing finger will never point again.
Omerta.
Sing for me now.

Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at August 01, 2011 08:41 PM (Y5I9o)
Barky was not allowed to let the US default while ther was money available. The whole point of the 14th amendment was that debt service HAS to be given the highest priority - not that the President gets any idiotic ability to borrow money for the US on his own signature (that's just crazy) like the libs are all claiming. The fact was taht Barky THREATENED to being the US to default, in violation of the Constitution, and he should be impeached because of it. Now, of course, even Paul Ryan is talking about averting "default" (which is beyond silly) so that has quickly gone by the wayside ...In the end, the US would only default if Barky worked it out, intentionally, so that it happened. It is his job to make sure the debt is paid from what is available and to plan accordingly. But he told the world that he would be thrilled to forgo that responsibility and let the US debt payments lapse ... which then made the possibility of the US defaulting real - but not because of anything but an America-hater in the White House controlling the disbursements.

2) you can't turn Defense spending on/off like a water faucet. You have

(1) Since this process takes place over several years, it depends on who wins which election. But that assumes Congress actually enforces the sequester.

(2) I agree, and I think it's another reason why the cuts won't be triggered. If a situation resulted in which I had to choose between eliminating a few loopholes and gutting defense because the Democrats wouldn't agree to anything, I'd go with eliminating the loopholes.

(3) One of the best things for the Republicans regarding the joint select committee is to pick the most pro-defense, anti-tax hike conservatives as possible.

Posted by: 80sBaby at August 01, 2011 08:52 PM (o2lIv)

599 @584 Just to riff of of what you are saying: Hey, it's nice if the GOP checked and double checked, but if defense gets cut, defense gets cut and, even if military bay/benefits remains sacrosanct that's really not our number one daily priority, believe it or not.

My primary concern underway was whether or not I could do my job, and the maintenance and upkeep of equipment; funding for training ops and schools; and funding for actual operations so we don't have to spend three weeks in a box somewhere on one shaft puttering around in circles at six knots because its almost the end of the fiscal year had an awful lot to do with whether or not I could do my job. And that's where cuts come from.

Of course, the shore commands will still be able to indulge in their end of the fiscal year buying sprees. Not that I am bitter about that, or anything.

P.S. Ms80s, this is not really directed at you, as I think you already understand. This is for the twats sporting semi-boners from reading your analysis that defense would get cut if the committee failed to do its job.

If Boehner and McConnell pick Republicans who are actually intelligent-- which they at least did with the Rs on the Bowles-Simpson Commission-- the Rs can play the committee to their advantage. They can equally force the Democrats into a situation where they have to choose between cuts to subsidies or their trigger which cuts Medicare and other social programs. If the Dems are going to run on MediScare for 2012, they cannot be caught in a position where they agree to Medicare cuts or they lose the seniors.

602 484 [...] That effin commission that is supposed to come up with the cuts has to report by December iirc. If their recommendations aren't taken up, then defense gets guteed automatically by 50%. Posted by: Steph at August 01, 2011 08:17 PM (2rzsu)

Actually, I think the agreement is that 50% of cuts come from defense.

The problem is that the FY 2012 DOD budget is $676 Billion. If you eliminated all DOD spending next year, the corresponding 50% of cuts would only be $676 Billion, for a total of $1.352 Trillion.

I believe the $1.5 T in cuts is supposed to be over 10 years, so, even if it is spread over 10 years equally, we wind up with $150 B in cuts, half of which is DOD. That's an 11% cut next year, while the other $75 B comes from the other $3.33 T of the budget, which amounts to a .05% cut.*

*Please check my numbers; I have a B.A. in English from a 4th rate jock college.

Yeah, the Dems won this one. Big time.

The 50% cut is the trigger if the commission fails to find $1.2T in savings. Any other cut that comes from these agreements must be from overall security spending and it was set-up a certain way so that the Dems cannot gut security spending.

611 609 How many does McConnell get to pick. Let me give you the short list
of who he'll choose. McCain, Graham, one of the Maine Twins at minimum,
Scott Brown, Hutchinson.
Who won't he be choosing? Johnson (WI), Rand Paul, Marco Rubio,
Demint.

3 members. I'm guessing he'll pick senators somewhere on the spectrum between the Maine Twins and Marco Rubio.

613 I guess we do owe Gabby an apology--we've been as stupid as Biden.

. . . When Biden was asked about what he spoke with Giffords about, he joked,Shes now a member of the cracked head club like me.

614 "This morning on Worldwide Exchange, Nicole Lapin pointed out that the
apparent victory by Republicans in the debt ceiling debate will now give
the GOP ownership of the economy. Thats another victory for Obama
because the economic outlook right now looks very, very bleak."

615 We are witnessing how a completely insulated, class of people living in an echo chamber, act when they seek to enlarge and protect their power base regardless of the wishes of the people they are elected to serve and obey.

This is a completely corrupt government. More out of touch with reality than any government since the 1850s. But this is only possible because of the compete and utter degeneration of the media, the judicial system and our politicians as well as the special interests that serve to feed and enhance its power.
The worst of all are those who mean well but advocate measures that shred our liberties and nuture the beast through more taxes, power, and regulations. These are ultimately the most dangerous and vile.

619 The tyranny of the minority?

You mean like preclearance under the Voting Rights Act?

You mean like affirmative action?

Yeah, Shiela, we understand 'the tyranny of the minority'.

620 Terrible optics for the Dems if they let the bill fail because Republicans are just so icky. And Sheila Jackson Lee couldn't order a burger and a milkshake without sounding like she'd suffered catastrophic head trauma
