Great White Buffalo Returns

Born during a thunderstorm in Greenville, Texas, his name is Lightning Medicine Cloud. The Lakota Sioux have a legend that the return of the great white buffalo will signal the dawn of a new age of limited government, fiscal responsibility, greater individual liberty, an end to judicial activism, a strong Tenth Amendment, and peace and love and stuff like that. I think.

Because of his unique colour, the two-month-old calf, still unsteady on his feet, caused over 2,000 Native Americans from across the U.S. to flock to the Lakota Ranch, in Greenville near Dallas, for yesterday's celebrations.

White buffalo are considered to be sacred signs in several Native American religions, and thus have great spiritual importance in those cultures and are visited for prayer and other religious ceremonies.

. . .

The Lakota Sioux believe that Whope, the goddess of peace, once appeared in the form of a white buffalo calf, and the belief is that the goddess will return once four such calves are born, bringing in 'a new age', which some reckon could be the end of the world.

'He's the hope of all nations,' said Arby Little Soldier, upon whose land the calf was born on May 12.

'That night it started to rain and thunder and lightening and hail. But now the red man, black man, white man and yellow man; we've all got to come together as one.'

Lightning Medicine Cloud is only the third of it's kind known and the first male in 150 years. The frequency of a white buffalo birth is estimated at one in ten million. More here and here. Video from KDFW in Dallas below the fold.

The Nuge is said to be even more energized than usual.

(I think Sporting News is the only one I've seen on the rack, and I won't buy any until I know the full season is on.)The NFL and players are idiots if they think everyone will come back, no harm done, if games are lost. A lot of NFL fans who are indifferent about college football will almost surely tune in to the latter product (even if out of sheer boredom) and a few of those may even get hooked. Hell, the NFL Network even shows games from another league (the CFL) that may help fans in general realize that the NFL is not so indispensable after all.

115 105 C. Anthony is a psychopath.

Well, that much seems certain. I suppose it's not beyond impossible that she is a sociopath that is actually innocent in this case (unlikely, I know). Nevertheless, there can be no doubt that she certainly IS a sociopath fully capable of killing anyone inconvenient without skipping a beat or wasting a single second feeling remorse over it. Even if found innocent... she needs to be put on notice that she WILL be watched closely.

No one close to her better pass away under any suspicious circumstances, she must be made to understand. Sociopaths may not understand morality or sympathy, but they are utter slaves to self-interest. That would be the only way to keep this particular human monster "safe" to be around others.

If her defense attorney had half the brains God gave my cats, that would have been the defense: If you punish this woman for killing her baby, you're opening the door to removing the right of all women to kill their babies.

Mind you, she's not on trial for the killing. She's on trial for lying about it. If she'd just admitted it and worked up some tears, she could have gotten a plea deal for negligence. Happens 20 times a year in Milwaukee when women get drunk and kill their babies.

But the circumstantial evidence is just too damning and people have been convicted for far less.

$1,695 to be a bridesmaid. The estimate was based on a 2010 Real
Weddings study that surveyed more than 20,000 brides nationwide."

New York State Police say 55-year-old Philip Contos of Parish was part of a protest against motorcycle helmets.

Police
say several motorists from the group ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for
Education) of Onondaga County had come together to make a point that
they didn't need their helmets.

The group was driving south on Route 11 in Lafayette around 1:30 p.m., headed toward Lake Como, just south of the Finger Lakes.

Police say Contos suddenly hit the brakes and lost control of the motorcycle.

285 Waffle House, chemjeff? Are you traveling?

Have you moved yet?

Man tried to impress me - and did, because I'm easily impressed - by moving some of our furniture on his 49th birthday (his first of many). We've got a Queen mattress (box spring was too much for us), a full bed, two chairs, and a dining set, plus TV/DVD. Most importantly: air conditioning (the rental house is not air conditioned). Woot-woot!

No internet yet, but we're back at the old place. Mr Y-not is happy though because we have fiber optic super-fast something or other for our internet (as soon as it's activated). The old owner was an IT guy.

'Hope everyone is having a great Independence Day holiday weekend. July 4th is a big big deal here in Utah. Huge parade tomorrow. People were already lining up on the street this morning and it is hot here today, so that's pretty hard core. We had a nice view of fireworks in the Valley from our master bedroom. Next year we'll try to brave the crowds and catch the parade.

Yeah, that's a Ribbon Controller. They may have just filmedthat, since you couldn't get much more accurate of a pitch with that than the Theremin.
Keith Emerson was among the first to take a Mini-Moog on tour. He had a ribbon controller too, complete with a roman candle attached to it for effect. He was know for a certain scatalogical action with it that I shallrefrain frommentioning in order not to offend our delicatesensibilities.

Of interest--we're doing a family weekend with appropriate food, and suddenly it has grown. There are 4 service connected families coming to this mess, thanks to my superb daughters. Good possibility that it will grow some more after today, not sure. We have done this on a much smaller basis for some time, always at our former house. This year is the first for our new home.

Should be a fun time.

And if you want a hoppy beer, but not so hoppy that it's bitter, try something called Exit 4. It's pretty strong (9.5% alcohol), to boot.

That's entirely possible. Having played a Mini-Moog before, I can tell you that there's not much in the way of theatrics in doing that kind of portamento (IIRC)on the keys. Press down on left key to establish the starting note, then press down any key above it to glide up to that note.
Fascinating. Especially if you're into round, shiny objects like I am. For an audience, not so much.

Since this is Independence Day weekend...

A mere 14 months after graduating, my son got a Chemical Engineering job. He moved out Friday and starts on Tuesday. I guess our economy really is expanding.

He moves from our Rust Belt home in Ohio to South Carolina. I guess Ohio's initiatives to keep skilled graduates at home didn't work in his case.

Anyway, we're very proud of him. 5 down and 2 to go (and an as-yet-to-be-determined number to come back again.)

I can relate. The doc keeps giving me weirdo meds -- the current ones make changing some light bulbs a chore.

But I'm gonna force myself to empty out the back of my hatchback to check the spare and jack. Then I gotta clean up a bunch of stuff out from under a boat trailer that I have to get towed on one of those trucks with a ramp.

Getting the boat back into the water is my big project right now. There's plenty of other stuff that needs to be done, but not in this heat/humidity. At least I can do the car/garage cleanup stuff in the shade.

So Maher--get with the program asshole! But I'm still scratching my head as to why the Lakota Sioux--Northern Plain's Indians after the Chippewa kicked the Sioux's ass out of Minnesota--have a Lakota Ranch near Dallas. Did they get a donation from J.R. Ewing?

314 There used to be a white buffalo in Jamestown , ND and a sign on the freeway. We stopped to see it.

They've also got one at the penitentiary up by Sante Fe in the buffalo herd they have there. I catch glimpses sometimes when I'm driving by. They also have Yaks. I have not a clue why they have Yaks, but they do.

315 It's very interesting that the calf is the first male in 150 years. If the trait is sex linked somehow the gene for a male white buffalo might be an entirely different gene than for a female with that color. If that's the case it probably wouldn't even help to breed the white ones together. Or the gene might be associated with a weakness in the male chromosome so that male white buffaloes are likely to die. That sort of thing happens sometimes.

Otherwise you'd think that it wouldn't be that hard to concentrate a recessive color gene in a herd. We know how to do this and have been doing it for a very long time, clever monkeys that we are.
