CBO Director: Yeah, Obama's Budget Reduction Speech Was Meaningless To Us. Also Biden Debt Reduction Talks Falling Apart?

CBO Director Doug Elmendorf is testifying at the House Budget Committee today and is pretty much ripping up the administration's approach to the budget and economic policy.

You may remember that the Senate voted 97-0 to not take up the budget Obama submitted. The excuse Democrats gave for not supporting their President's budget was that it was superseded by Obama's deficit reduction speech.

Well, today Elmendorf said, "just words".

Ouch.

Jim Petholoukis is live tweeting the hearing
. A couple of more nuggets from Elmendorf:

Boom Boom Pow! CBO's Elmendorf: "Higher marginal tax rates do reduce economic activity ."

Ka-Blam! CBO Elmendorf: Raising tax rates on rich hurts more than raising tax on everyone else. (Dem wasn't expecting that answer)

I'm going to guess the liberal won't be so quick to call the CBO the "Gold Standard" of budget analysis anymore.

Related: Looks like the GOP is pulling out of the Sheriff Joe led debt reduction talks. It's almost as if this was simply a stalling tactic by the administration or something.

Calamity recently had Luntz's Dunces on to "grill" two repubs, two proglodytes and one bidnessman for a focus group. When Jim DeMint was asked if he thought these budget talks would stop our flying leap off the cliff, he sighed. For about 10 solid seconds.

32 OT/Sum thoughts on government as constrained vs unconstrained.

Conservative - constrained at home / unconstrained abroad
Leftist - unconstrained at home / constrained abroad
Libertarian - constrained at home/ constrained abroad

Bush and Obama = unconstrained at home/unconstrained abroad

un/un doesnt work because there is no known form of economic/tax system of even very wealthy resource rich governments that can support both for any real length of time. Always ends up bankrupt having failed at both. See the Soviet Union/Maos China/N Korea... oh wait you cant.

Even un/con or con/un while lasting longer, again is not long term sustainable because an unconstrained government foreign or domestic grows and consumes and quickly its own momentum becomes unstoppable until it has simply consumed everything in reach and starves to death. See British Empire, French Empire, Roman Empire... oh wait ... you cant.

Painful trade deficit?

Soaring energy prices due to under utilization of domestic resources?

A threatened and uncertain tax and regulation policy that makes investment in the US risky and potentially very bad?

Government hostility against corporate profits?

Bernake there are a lot of ships out on the economic ocean. Right now there is a very real chance that we are going to go down fast. Why would you put more stuff on that ship Bernake? Wouldn't you choose one that wasn't in quite so precarious shape?

To be fair though, the fact that the US economy is soldiering on even if only limping is testament to America. O has done everything possible to outright kill this economy and send it into collapse and depression and yet it still keeps going.

The FAA is supposed to both promote and regulate the air industry. Those are two conflicting goals. As such the FAA has often allowed unsafe crap to go on for years in favor of the "promoting" side of the agency.

It could easily be abolished with the NTSB handling all safety regulation. The people whom figure out all the accidents are going to know best how to avoid them.

71 All federal agencies should be abolished and all the regulations with them. All employees fired and the "bosses" all forbidden from working in a government position ever again.

The congress should start over from scratch. With every meeting in determining agency status and regulations subject to public scrutiny.

Organization that control industry safety should not be reauthorized. What should happen is the major players should form an industry working group to develop standards (ASME codes are a fine example) and best practices that all should follow.

It has been my experience that nearly every government organization does not perform the function it was originally designed for and at best the regulations do not work.

79 Their "promote" part is supposed to be ensuring an aviation
transportation infrastructure exists and meets the US' needs for
commercial and private air transportation. The same way State's make
roads to ensure an automobile transportation infrastructure exists.

You mean the same subsidized road infrastructure which is now almost always overbuilt at a low quality with taxpayer money to keep construction unions bought?

Subsidizing roads has gotten us nothing but routes to nowhere, endless sprawl, and huge maintenance liabilities. Small towns and industrial areas used to be very efficient with their land use to avoid all the local property taxes and operating funds being eaten up by road maintenance. Now that the Feds are always picking up the tab for roads, there's no incentive for efficient land use.

This isn't to say that some highways are very useful for transportation and trucking. However as with all government projects with good intentions, it has really gotten out of hand.

If every McMansion had to pay appropriate taxes to maintain the far flung roads to provide access to them, we wouldn't be loosing a lot of our good farm land. Industrial areas would be closer to rail hubs for long distance shipping, which would dramatically cut diesel usage and wear on our highways by heavy trucks. It ridiculous that as a country we are bankrupting ourselves to pay for road construction, maintenance, and gas, because it's now impossible in some areas to get to a store or a job without driving a long distance. Yes, snob zoning is part of the problem, but government intervention with road subsidies has been a big part of it too.

80 I need to rebut my lefty aunt's scorn about the Palin comments regarding Paul Revere. Links please.
It was a muddled comment from Palin, unlike the Party like it's 1773 one, so I wouldn't take my stand there.

82 But, in fairness, the rest of the post was right on. But it's nothing that High Speed Rail can't fix.

Posted by: The Grammar Nazi at June 23, 2011 02:32 PM (YmPwQ)

83 #81 Sorry, government subsidized high speed rail would be just another boondoggle encouraging even worse land use.

84 I know. Sarcasm doesn't translate sometimes.
