10 It actually is a pretty serious question as to how a Muslim chick like Huma could have married a Jew who hadn't converted to Islam.
Technically speaking, if Weiner really didn't convert, then Huma should have been beheaded by now.
Unless maybe the Muslims think that Huma is such a good intelligence asset that they don't want to blow her cover.
[BTW, most people who have studied the matter believe that Grover Norquist secretly converted to Islam when he married his Muslim wife.]

I don't think this country needs a president with a poorly balanced head that requires a giant pillow to sleep on. I want a well proportioned president that doesn't need a larger than average pillow. I want to look at my president and think, "Hey, if he ever showed up at my house and needed a place to crash I got the perfect sized pillow for him." And he'd be like, "This pillow is so soft! Dude tomorrow, just for you...tax cut!" That shit would be so cash.

65 Let's go tin foil hat. He's a Chinese mole that has gone native, a la Tom Friedman.

Posted by: mark c at June 22, 2011 09:57 AM (SBIko)

66 "why did the virtually unknown ambassador to China for a demCINC decide to run for president as a republican?"

I really think it was for three reasons.

1. Personal ambition - I don't think he really believes he'll win the nomination. I think he thinks that he has a shot at being given the VP slot. This is a guy who may have won the governorship in Utah (although my bet is that was primarily owing to the esteem Utahns feel for his dad), but for the most part he has had made his career off of appointments (ambassadorships, WH positions), not elections. To give you insight into the guy's personality, his hatred for Mitt stems from Jon Jr. expecting the SLC Olympic Cmte to hand the reins over to him, without him applying for the job. Mitt beat him out for the job which is why the mom and Jon Jr. hate Mitt.

2. Hatred of Mitt - see above. This will not work, imho. The people who know him best (Utahns) chose Mitt 3:1 over Huntsman in a head-to-head POTUS poll a few months ago. His Lt. Gov., Herbert (now our governor), has made it pretty clear he's not endorsing Huntsman.

3. Desire to push the party to the left - I think he finds the conservative/tea party crowd "distasteful." He was quite comfortable settling into the Obama administration. He would be more upset if Bachmann won than if Obama won re-election.

72 Yeah, he increased his support 100% from the previous poll. But that is the latest Zogby (see my post on the headline thread).
So, in about 60 days, Huntsman has doubled his support from 1 to 2%. So by August 22 he is at 4%, October 22 8%, December 22 16% and...well folks, when New Hampshire happens, he is at 32% and it is over.

Posted by: Minnie Rodent at June 22, 2011 10:06 AM (S3rrR)

74 @68
I'm keeping my tinfoil hat on for this one.

It's not a very good strategy by Soros et al, if that's what it is. I would think they'd have groomed some governor with no direct connections to the administration as the plant. That could have worked. If they picked some "moderate" (read: liberal) Republican governor, the admin could have spent the past couple of years helping out that state so the gov would look good. Annointing that person as the Great GOP Hope (only to know that the person would run an even more anemic campaign than McCain) would have been a great strategy. Perhaps that's what they'd planned to do with Charlie Crist.

I'm sure they're happy Huntsman is running, but I don't think they planned it.

77 Convenient the way he discovered that Obama isn't a foreign policy genius. It only took him two years

Yup!

When his name was first floated, several months ago, I was willing to consider him. I thought a candidate who had been a successful governor and had left the Obama administration could have conducted a powerful campaign against Obama. It seemed like on paper Huntsman had the foreign policy bases covered that our other governors/former governors lacked.

But after reading up on him and talking with a lot of Utahns and seeing that Salt Lake Tribune (complete liberal rag) is pushing his candidacy... well, he is clearly a cravenly ambitious prick.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 22, 2011 10:21 AM (Rlz/P)

87 Why does he hate Mitt? Two peas in a pod.

He hates him because of the Olympics. There was an in depth profile of Huntsman in some place like Vanity Fair (I know!) a while back explaining the animus. I wouldn't take it seriously except that I've spoken with several people in the know here in Utah who confirm the basic points. The mother is apparently a nasty piece of work as well, so she may be egging Junior on. The sad thing is that the father is by all accounts a wonderful man. He's given away $1.2 billion to charity (not just to the Church, but to schools, hospitals, and the like) while his net worth is a bit under $1 billion.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think that Romney is a person of basically sound character. His policies may be wrong, but I basically respect him as a person (doesn't mean I want him to be President). I think Mitt has handled the personal attacks on him over his faith with dignity. Unlike Huntsman, Mitt doesn't spend tons of time back-pedaling from being a Mormon. (If I were a Mormon, I'd be utterly disgusted by Huntsman Jr's behavior.)

Huntsman, in contrast, is a really opportunistic weasel. I've spoken with folks who worked on his campaigns who really felt betrayed by Huntsman over changes in positions that he made after being elected. The school choice issue was one in particular that really lost him support.

Romney is really well-respected here because of what he did with the Olympics. I've only met one person who did not sing Mitt's praises over how he brought them back from the brink of disaster.

93 Jon Huntsman loves him some Barry O. Oh wait, he was just trying to be nice:
In an interview after his presidential announcement Tuesday, former Utah governor and ambassador to China Jon Huntsman tried to downplay a letter he wrote to President Barack Obama in August 2009 calling him a "remarkable leader."Huntsman told Fox News that he was only alluding to the fact that the president would appoint a Republican to "a position as important and sensitive as the U.S. ambassadorship to China."
"You are a remarkable leader," Huntsman wrote in the note, which was leaked to reporters earlier this year. He underlined the word "remarkable."

94 In the last season of The West Wing, Alan Alda played a RINO
presidential candidate who the writers created as a Republican who could
really win the nation over with his "moderate" policies.

On the
show, he lost big time to a Latino congressman whose big winning issue
with the voters was to massively jack up education spending played by
Jimmy Smits

95 This guy is not so stupid that he doesn't know he can't get through the Republican primary. This whole effort is the start of a third-party run. I smell John Anderson all over this mofo.

Book it.

96 @95
But when that fails, what will he do for a job? I mean, most of this guy's career comes from his family connections (from Jon Sr's global chemical company). I'm sure that's why he got the various WH trade appointments. If he runs as a spoiler, he loses all support from the GOP - possibly even loses his dad at that point as I'm pretty sure Jon Sr is a conservative (Sr's business partner, Bob Gay, certainly is). No more sweet appointments. He'd be a pariah in the GOP, in Utah, and possibly in his own family and his usefulness to the Democrats would be over.

The guy's psychological make up is that he never wants to have to work for anything.

I still think his primary motivation is for the VP slot.

I think the "Rich Kid" psychology play right into a third party run. He is NOT going to be the Republican nominee, he never has to worry about where his next vacation home is coming from, and the media attention (especially the way the MSM will fawn over him as a "reasonable" Republican) will turn this guy on. Families rarely ostracize to the point of disinheriting a son or daughter over politics. He will couch this as an attempt to appeal to the centrist and attempt to paint the Rs as outside the mainstream with all of the heavy lifting done by the press. They will LOVE him, solely as a means to protect their boyfriend. And beleive me, he will have myriad opportunities both withe the Dems, and as a pundit or "statesman". The MSM adores "Republicans" who show disdain for conservatism.

111 Better than ZzzzzzPaw's Iowa commercial. Huntsman has deep pockets, and can go further in the race. Money can't buy you a personality, though. Ask Mitt.

Palin's more electable than this whole pathetic crowd. Bachmann and Perry are no substitutes. Santorum and Gingrich are running, for fuck's sake. Cain in the race throws out the experience argument altogether.

Cain, Santorum and Gingrich should drop out. Perry and Thune should get in. Maybe not Palin, but she's still better than anyone else in the race. Huntsman at least makes you cavedwellers look like you give a shit about the economy and foreign policy. This is romper room politics so far.

Perhaps the stupidest tripe I've read all week- and that's an accomplishment. O's Ambassador to China, and he speaks fuckin' Mandarin- there's credentials for you. Any one who is not all over federal spending is not serious on the economy, and this guy wants to be the "reasonable one" as defined by the MSM. Serious about the economy? Hardly. The folks who are serious about the economy are the ones who will look directly into the camera and say tougher times are coming, particularly if you depend on the government for your bread.

118 Y-not, always love your posts, I love hearing another moron who is versed in Utah politics. (I too am a transplant to Utah.) And you are spot on.

I mentioned this in a thread a while back, but Jon was a horrible businessman; I have no clue why he keeps touting business credentials, he almost drove his dad's company into the ground and slunk off into politics instead, using his dad's coattails and rep to get into office. Governors Leavitt and Walker did a brilliant job of running the state, giving us a giant surplus during Jon's reign, and so he got to spend it and look like a big hero. (The way the repubs threw Walker under the bus and fell behind Huntsman for Governor instead made me switch from Repub to Independent; it was truly disgusting.)

He is jealous of Romney because Romney has something he doesn't: actual accomplishments in the business sector and in being a leader. And the way he said in that interview that he basically isn't Mormon, probably to pander to lefties; way to flip flop on your religion, bud. In Utah he bathed in those Mormon roots to get elected, but once gone from the state disavows them. Yeah, it's great he knows Chinese, but that's not enough to make him worthy of a presidency.

103
Darklord, Glenn ripped Jon Jr. a new one last year I think, just let go on his radio show one day, it was brilliant. He got a call from Jon Sr. about it, the man was way disappointed he would do that. He actually apologized on his show the day after (I think more for how he said things than what he actually said.) I'd love to go back and find audio of that but I can't remember when it was. I get not wanting to piss off your idols, but Jon Jr. chose to throw his hat into the ring of politics; his dad needs to respect that the process means people will say crappy things about his kid. And heaven forbid, those crappy things might even be based on facts!

Surely some of you were that age at the time, or had kids that age. Youtube it, morons. It works real well in context, so I can't guarantee you'll find it funny if you just watch the shorts that are available now.
Anyway, I think (unless there are copyright infringement issues) the theme song should run every time Jon Huntsman's name is mentioned. It already does in my head.

121 118 - Damn. I'd pay good money to hear that. It was kinda obvious yesterday that Glenn really, really wanted to say something, but wanted to stay in Sr.'s good graces. (His comments about being used against either way sounded weak--in hindsight that should've been a clue I guess...)

Obviously I don't know what's going on in that family, but it's not just politics. Junior spends a lot of time proclaiming how un-Mormon he is.

His dad is a respected member of the LDS Church (maybe even an Area Seventy or something). Junior clearly is not. I think the double whammy of enabling an Obama victory and being an asshole anti-Mormon to boot (don't forget, this guy just hired someone from Huck's team for pity's sake), knee-capping the favored candidate [Mitt], might be enough to do serious damage to his relationship with his dad. His mom: probably not. But I'm guessing Jon Sr. controls the purse strings.

It'll be interesting to see whom Bob Gay (Huntsman Sr's business partner at Huntsman Gay Global Capital) supports. I saw Gay speak recently. He seemed really conservative. And, he was Mitt's mentor, I think.

I'm a little farther up north, in cow and cheese country, so when the apocalypse and/or zombie invasions begin I'll be in a good position to survive. I've been here, wow, 14 years now; love it but as a city transplant it took some getting used to. A big culture shock, but I love the laid-backness of it all.

Yeah, I was surprised by the immigration bill too. As someone who is LDS I can kind of speculate as to why, my two cents. I think they support it because they think it will help with missionary work. In the church's mind a convert is a convert, it doesn't matter where they come from, and having them come to the US and Utah makes it easier for the missionaries here to find them. I know there are a ton of Spanish speaking US missions now, especially in CA, and the bulk of new converts are often latino/hispanic. So the church sees that as a demographic they want to pursue.

However, a ton of Mormons in Utah are hard core tea partiers, which I'm sure you know, plus one of the Articles of Faith of Mormonism is to "obey, honor, and sustain the law," and the bill kind of flies in the face of Federal law. So a lot of LDS members are torn about that. I always suspected Uchtdorf (one of Monson's counselors in the church presidency) of being a Dem, actually, and Monson being conservative, but they keep their political beliefs really close to the vest so I honestly have no idea.

Have you ever listened to Rod Arquette on 105.7 FM? He's definitely conservative/has tea party leanings, but he is fair, and he gets great guests on. One of my faves on my drive home in the evenings.

Unfortunately, Voinovich (from the Serb, meaning "pale green pants with no one inside them") is too old, and screwed the pooch besides with the whole tearful breakdown thing. The press loved to paint him as a "deficit hawk," though: his answer to deficits was to raise taxes, every time.
