Patterico, Part 3: Why Was Weiner DMing With a Dirty-Talking 17-Year-Old Girl Who Kept Telling Him She "Loved" Him?

Before the link: There are two charges possible here. Let's call them Murder and Manslaughter, because I don't actually want to talk about what the real charges are.

Murder: You know what this charge is.

The media doesn't want to talk about this charge. Let me drop my media-hating for one moment and say, "I get it." I know. It's a huge charge. The likelihood you will ever be able to prove Murder is rather low. And you'd sound overzealous even talking about it.

Plus, let's talk about the real reason: We all want this girl, who is 17 and a child and just starting her life, to be innocent here. No one is eager -- not Patterico, not me -- to write stuff that shines a girl in a bad light.

And look: Sure, he'd be crazy to do that. Crazier than even he's been acting.

So let's talk about the charge that's easier to talk about. We don't have to say anything about the girl, or think too much about uncomfortable things, or even propose a single action not already admitted by Weiner, to get to Manslaughter.

Manslaughter. That his private communications were not criminal and not sexual, but still wildly inappropriate.

What was Weiner's pattern? He tended to cruise social media looking for cute, often young women flattering him with crushes and favorable comments about his looks. If you said Weiner was hottt, and your picture showed you to be reasonably attractive, click, you got a follow.

If you said you wanted a "sexual relationship" with him, you got a follow.

If you bragged about him being "my boyfriend," you got a follow.

And, in the case of a 17 year old girl who had a bit of a habit of talking like a 30 year old sailor, if you said you "loved" him, you got a follow.

Why did that happen?

Again, let's not talk about Murder, and let's not think about it. Put the Murder charge out of mind. Let's think about lesser offenses.

Let's assume this girl was not, in fact, propositioned with anything that the police would have an interest in.

But yet still: Why did he follow her?

Because she "loved" him? Let me propose that if a 17 year old girl, with a history of some frank, Cinemax-at-night public tweets, says she "loves" a 46-year-old Congressman, under no circumstances should he follow her, and create the possibility of a private DM.

What's that? He just followed everyone who hit that #YesWeiner thing?

1, you know that's not true. He was only following 91 people in April, and only double that in May. He had 45,000 followers. Surely more hit #YesWeiner.

2, it turns out some people who hit #YesWeiner didn't get that supposedly-automatic follow.

guynotfollowed.png

Why didn't that guy get followed?

Oh, right. Because he's a guy. He's... somehow not interesting to Weiner. And yes it is a guy; I have clipped his name. No pretty picture; no flirty banter. Just hit #YesWeiner, as he was told, but didn't get a follow.

The magic words were not #YesWeiner.

The magic words were hott, sexual relations, my boyfriend, and love. Coming from an attractive, usually young, girl.

So why did he follow a girl that he should never in a thousand years have even been acknowledging?

Let me quote Alec Baldwin's disastrous defense of Weiner. I think he does actually offer a good point -- at least, a good one for the Manslaughter charge. I don't think we need to strain our minds for the other charge.

My thought on Weiner is that he is a very busy man. Like most, although not all, politicians, he probably spends a great deal of time going to meetings, raising campaign funds and seizing upon every opportunity to remind people of how great he is as a public servant and a human being. It's exhausting. He exists under a constant pressure cooker of self-analysis and public appraisal. Like other politicians, he needs something to take the edge off. For some people, regardless of occupation, that could mean booze, drugs, gambling, food or shopping. For high functioning men like Weiner and other officials who have lived through such scandals, who are constantly on the go, that leaves one tried and true source of a reliable high. The affirmation that comes when someone lets you know they want to sleep with you. Or even cyber-sleep with you.

That is an exilerating feeling. Alec Baldwin isn't lying. It's a good question whether it's the First Sex that's actually good, or it's the incredible excitement, the buzz, that comes in anticipation of the First Sex. Christmas, or Christmas Eve?

From Anthony Weiner's embarrassing declaration in that Cosmo interview, we know he's a bit of a love-junkie, chasing that high. As he said, he wanted to be "sucked into the throes of love," and you can tell he means it, because that makes no damn sense. So he means it.

And so here's a 17 year old. Likes to talk about sex publicly on Twitter. Pretty cute. Kind of girl you'd like if you were yourself 17 years old, and not a particularly handsome sort of 17 year old, but an awkward, skinny funny-looking kind of guy. Girl that that awkward, skinny, funny-looking 17 year old never could have gotten.

But now she says she "loves" him. And he does enjoy the validation of infatuated women.

Who doesn't?

But she's not a woman. She's a 17 year old girl. She is, for legal purposes, a child.

In the Manslaughter theory, he never says anything legally actionable in his private communications with her -- and yes, he seems to have had them. Rather, he just enjoys the crush-vibes he gets from her, flattered that a pretty young thing could be in "love" with a still-not-confident-and-mature boy-man like him.

Sure, he deflects away her serious protestations of love, but he doesn't say anything legally actionable. He just... enjoys the flattery of a pretty 17 year old who's in love with him.

Perfectly innocent.

Except it's not innocent. It's not innocent.

Because there is no one reading this right now who, if I were to suggest a similar scenario with an adult just seeking out their daughter's private attention, doing nothing actually illegal but just enjoying the fact the girl had a major league crush on him... well, there would be problems. Real problems.

You don't have to prove someone's a criminal to know he's a creep.

Why is Anthony Weiner having private communications with underage girls clearly infatuated with him at all?

Let's assume it's not Murder. Let's assume he deflected any of these lovesick girl's stronger declarations of affections.

Why was he contacting them?

To talk politics? To talk shop? To ask a 17 year old girl, "What do you think we should do to back the Republicans off their debt-limit no-negotiation stance"?

Or to engage in some creepy, weird indulgence in the crush-vibes of that girl?

There's no crime in the Manslaughter theory, but there is serious offense.

So that's my theory.

My theory is that it's Manslaughter because I don't want to think about it being anything more.

But read the evidence yourself.

Yes, he did indeed DM her, unless it's a coincidence that she referred to him as "cape and tights" just like he referred to himself as putting on the "cape and tights" in a chat with the Blackjack Dealer.

Sure, that could be a coincidence. If you still believe in "coincidence" in this matter, and if you still do, you haven't been paying attention.

And yes... she sure seems to indicate a little private mutual admiration society was going on behind the scenes.

You don't have to think something criminal happened here to say that a 46 year old man should not be seeking this type of "frivolity" and romantic validation from a starstruck 17 year old girl.

Just perfectly innocent. A married 46 year old Congressman private messaging a smitten, hero-worshipping, bad-girl-talking 17 year old girl who "loved" him.

What could be more innocent than that?

2 I said something like this on Patterico's Part 2...

"""""

I’m not sure if “talking dirty”(unless Patterico has more in Part 3)
is the right term… “getting flirty” is a more apt description. He’s
definitely using the same techniques, but he may be holding back a bit.

While only “getting flirty” would probably keep him from getting arrested, it should get him tossed from congress.

4 Let's not forget that the biggest reason she'd have for wanting him to follow her is so she could DM with him.

You think a girl THAT in love/lust with him WOULDN'T send him DMs?

I'd suggest that the reason he unfollowed her in the first place was not because of Wolf's pestering, but because he had a moment of clarity after getting some DMs from her. Then in a moment of unclarity, decided to follow her again.

Either way, his word should be taken for NOTHING from here on out. If he wants to clear his name with regards to this underage girl, let the evidence speak for him. He won't. It won't. Because he's guilty.

No.
It's like he gave her a backstage pass and she went backstage when the ONLY PEOPLE THERE WERE Weiner and the underage girl. And Weiner both knew that nobody else would be there and that there could NOT be anybody else there.

Here's another way to took at it.
You're home with your 17 year old daughter.
Weiner shows up. He wants to visit your daughter in a room with the door closed and nobody else present. You strap the lie detector on him and ask if he's going to anything of a sexual nature. He says no and the lie detector backs him up. But he won't say what he will do.
Do you let him in the bedroom?

(assume the lie detector works 100% of the time)

35 By following (and re-following) underage girl(s), Weiner allowed them to send DMs to him. He schose girls who publicly expressed admiration and sexual desire for him. Rep Weiner was soliciting them to send inappropriate material to him, even if he never sent a DM to them (which is unlikely). His conduct goes beyond questionable judgment, it is the conduct of a predator. And that's only what we can prove.

But in the case of Lisa Weiss, it wasn't just private messaging. She gave him her phone number and at least once tells him in a casual sense to call her. Contrast that with the constant begging of him to come to Vegas. In real life, against someone who has (social) immunity from (metaphorical) prosecution, only a 'tard-level sub-syllogism convicts. "This cock on the internet that got here via Weiner's twitter account is Weiner's cock that he put on the internet." No inference necessary. Dick-pic ipsa loquitur.
What you have here instead is a pattern-minus-one that, because one from a list of inferences in the Big Man's disfavor is required to close the pattern, the (metaphorical) jury won't pick one. They'll look at you and wonder what's wrong with you that you're throwing all this shit at the wall to try to take down the Big Man, if you don't have straight goods.
It's an OJ. Everyone always knew he did it, but it's not OJ who was judged. His accuser—who- or whatever the jury understood to be his accuser (living racist-cop stereotype, "history of _____," whatever)—was.
The understood accuser of Weiner is righty puritanism, partisan desperation, wounded betas whose TV crush he fucked, jealous outside-the-loopers, etc.
If you have the dirt, dump it. All of it. No cliffhangers. Time is all his.
If you don't have it, down to the no-inference just-look-at-his-fucking-cock level, bail. It'll backfire.

67 FBI has jurisdiction to investigate this matter, the activity was interstate. There's sufficient indicia to investigate criminal sexual predatory activity of Weiner pursuing a minor in the twitters posted. If DOJ blocks the FBI . . . woe to Holder.

105 I'm not hoping for political reasons, I'm hoping because I think she and her parents need to get some professional help.

I was drugged and date raped as a virgin back in the days when it was not
"socially acceptable" to be date raped. It was always the girl's fault. No matter what.

No, I'm not hoping for political reasons at all. I'm hoping it will get her the help she needs and some kind of charge against her parents if they tried to cover it up.

I doubt her parents realize any need for help. I suspect her parents are running the hush with Weiner's people. The girl's brazen talk at 17 is a reflection of her home, one way or another. She is recoverable at her young age but it doesn't look like that's coming down the pike for her.

That is a civil wrong (a tort) not a criminal wrong (a crime), but it is defiinitely illegal. His mea culpa is indistinguishable from Richard Nixon's, "I am not a crook".
We also know he is not a gentleman, for he has effectively forced Kirsten Powers to admit her awful taste in men with a prediliction for "bad boys".So in that vast middle ground between gentleman and crooklet us settle on calling him a "worm".

140 I'm just not getting the wall to wall coverage about this. The public certainly knows that Weiner is a scumbag of epic proportions by now. Heaven help the next GOP congresscritter that gets caught (and they will) doing similar things.
If there is anything further to be learned I think it would be this: If you have teenage kids you REALLY need to see what they are texting and telling one another on facebook.
If you have a daughter be afraid - very afraid. If you have a son be sure that he knows that the police don't really care if he is 46 or 19 - they will bust him for talking dirty with someone under age. Only difference is that you probably won't have to money to get a good lawyer and you will see him wearing the sex offender label the rest of his life...

Meanwhile in "lighter news" /sarc, the SecDef and the President are talking about cutting troop pay as they suck up 400 billion in defense cuts the next few years. That story kind of slid past everyone as the Weiner pile on fest continued.
But hey its all about priorities isn't it?

148 There have been quite a few words written about it already on the inner-tubes, but I think it still bears repeating.
I really think that he needs to both stay in office, and remain in the news as long as possible.
And....I think it needs to be emphasized that the only reason Queen Nancy wants him to step down is that it distracts from their agenda.

It's not because what he did was wrong....it's because it is making it harder for them to push their goals.
It has nothing to do with him bringing disgrace upon himself, his family and the Democratic party.
It has nothing to do with passing moral judgement on his actions.
It has nothing to do with quite possibly violating several state and federal laws.
It has nothing to do with anything except slowing them down.
And that needs to be made abundantly clear to the American people.

It's not about the actions.....it's about the bad optics.

150 Once, in my late 20s, I was waiting in a packed big city train station to pick up a college buddy. He was in town for a job interview and was too broke to get a cab, so I agreed to pick him up. I had taken time off work and was dressed in coat and tie.

Traffic was surprisingly light and I got there way early, so I had a lot of time to kill. I got some food and a paper and sat down at a table.

After 10 minutes this attractive, young girl asks if she can share my table. She looks like a college girl, maybe even high school. The train station is crowded, so I mumble, "ok". I go back to reading my paper.

The girl kept interrupting me. Asking the time. Asking what I was reading. Complimenting my outfit. But something about the whole interaction freaked me out, so I would just mumble and keep reading my paper. She was being .. flirty. Touching her hair, that sort of thing.

The whole thing was odd, so I ignored her. But she wouldn't shut-up. She kept trying to offer details about her life, and get me to talk about mine. She mentioned school. Trying to get me to pay attention to her.

I was thinking, What kind of girl does this? Randomly talks to strange men at a big, public train station. Didn't her parents tell her not to ever do this?

Then it occurred to me -- oh my god, she's a hooker. But she was so pretty, and healthy looking. My image of hookers was more drug-addled and sick looking -- but I'd never seen a hooker in real life.

Then thought #2 occurred to me -- oh my god, it's a sting. She's a young looking cop. And this must be some well-known hooker-john meet-up area that I've stumbled on.

At that point I immediately got up, excused myself, and walked away. The whole interaction was less than 5 minutes. I hung out at the Starbucks until my friend's train arrived.

To this day I don't know if she was just some talkative girl, a hooker, or a cop. I do know it only took about 5 minutes to freak me out. And she didn't say anything inappropriate. But something about how she said it. Or her body language. It was just ... weird. And none of the possibilities were good - crazy hot girl who talks/flirts with random men in a train station, or hooker, or vice squad.

151 There is legal precedent for defending this. Most likely, this involves product liability.

In the case of Tone Loc v. Medina Beverage Group, Inc. It was shown that the plaintiff was unknowingly endowed with sexual attractiveness that not only drew desirable women to him, but indeed indiscriminately attracted those outside the targeted demographic, up to and including a transvestite named "Sheena."

Certainly, Rep. Weiner did not intend to present himself as a sexual match to an underage girl, and yet, you see repeated assertions of love from "Ethel" on her Twitter feed.

Unfortunately, it is too late for a toxicology test, due to the product's short half-life, but I feel confident in exonerating the Congressman and placing responsibility at the feet of the true perpetrator:

Funky Cold Medina.

Her parents are every bit complicit in this.

157 Well here's to hoping my wife "murders" me this weekend.

She didn't "murder" me last weekend - we were having an argument about some stupid shit. Actually, I think it was me withholding and not allowing her "murder" me ... because she pissed me off and I thought I would get back at her by not allowing her to "murder" me the whole weekend - when it's pretty much a given routine that I'll allow her to "murder" me.

But ... what a stupid dud I am. I only wounded myself, of course, because I'm a guy ... I NEED THE "MURDER". Women don't need "murder" ... sure - they enjoy when it comes along ... and you'd think it was the most important thing in the world to them when they are hot and sweating in the middle of the "murder" act - but in actuality - women are like fucking camels and water - they can go long periods of time without "murdering" anyone. No, they aren't happy women they aren't "murdering" some poor schlub - but they can survive.

So I hope she murders the shit out of me this weekend - and does it several times.

164 I'm going to play Dr. Phil for one comment:

I think what was going on with Weiner was, his old High School pics show him to be the quintessential picked-on, unpopular nerd no girl would have looked at once, never mind a second time.

He was picked on savagely for his last name, we can be sure of that.

So for decades he's been carrying this psychological baggage around, that I'll wager included cruel taunts and humiliations, beatings by bullies, and a good deal of sexual frustration coupled with a crushingly crippled sense of self-esteem. For that, I feel pity for him.

So now, comparatively late in life, he suddenly discovers girls like him after all: even if, realistically, it's just because they see him on TV and know him to be powerful (always a potent aphrodisiac for female nether regions). A well-adjusted male with memories of being the High School football hero that screwed the entire cheerleading squad under the bleachers after practice probably can't relate how much that would mean to someone like Weiner. Healthy adult women probably can't begin to realize how much their rejection and taunting of a nerdy boy like the young Weiner really did to him, and how much the sudden interest of attractive women... porn stars, even, and the very same High School-aged girls that before always not only eluded, but actually emotionally derided him, would emotionally impact him.

The emotional vindication, the mental release of all that mental baggage, the incredible boost to his ego and chronically damaged sense of self-esteem, would be incredibly intense, like the rush from a snort of cocaine. And just as addictive...

So I think THAT is probably the most likely explanation of why he did what he did.

Now, about the subject of it being a 17 year old girl:

1. In this country, the age of consent is 16; she's 17.

2. I can remember people snickering at Brooke Shields way back when for saying she was still a virgin... when she was still in her teens. It was like there was something wrong with her for NOT having had sex by age 16.

3. There are 14 year olds out there nowadays with far more sexual experience than their own Moms.

No, I don't advocate having sex with kids. But let's put the whole "Oh my God! She was only 17, she's scarred for life!" in perspective, folks. There are 17 year olds with several kids out there. There are 13 year olds shaving their vajajays - which I think is gross, but that's not the point. The point is: Weiner HARDLY took away anyone's "innocence" away.

That's not to say he didn't do anything seriously wrong: he betrayed his wife, he destroyed his life, he potentially created a national security risk. But I think that this particular tramp's age is the least of it.

Well, that's my Dr. Phil's Analysis of what drove this guy to do what he did...

167 Weiner is a pervert. Plain and simple.

As to the child angle, I would remind people that leftists always go after kids. For complicated issues, they do this because children are the only ones who will buy their idiotic arguments. For sexual issues, they do this because children are among the only ones who are impressed with them.

Child abuse is a basic tenet of leftism.

If you're old enough to get pregnant and/or splattered with blood in the service of your country, you're no longer in the precious innocence state of childhood.

Creepy behavior? Oh my yes. Abuse of office and public trust? Absolutely. But ultimately, this is a side issue. I will save my pitchforks and torches for the people who are turning the country into a very large Argentina.

He's merely recycling the same, field-tested line. It's worked before, there's no reason to believe it won't work again in the future. Unless these special women in a Weiner's life start talking amongst themselves.

Then the game is up.

And while in some jurisdictions a 17 year old is at or above the age of consent, I tend to go with 18 just to not run afoul of the law.

A seventeen year old is not an infant. And if you think they are, you should be lobbying for changing the laws of military recruitment and driver's licencing.

If you put up a picture of yourself as a teen ager then you are going to attract teenagers. It's like my friend who met this girl on some internet dating site and he was like "wow, she is beautiful" but the problem was, though it was her, it was her years ago, before the eating binge and when he met her in person he excused himself and never went back. that "being in a position of power" thing is no small thing. We have had pedophile priests (position of power) we have had girls who got their promotion on the couch in their bosses' office (position of power) and girls who were fired when they refused to get on the couch (position of power), we've had three female teachers having affairs with their underage students (position of power).

In law, under 18 are referred to as minors or juveniles. Infants are 1 year or less.

227 This reminds me of all the conservative breast beating about poor, abused, he-done-her-wrong Monica Lewinsky. Because Clinton had a position of power, or something, and the fact that she was a 21 year old adult didn't matter.
So---how old does a female have to be to have a mind of her own, and not be a puppet? Thirty?
So a college dean/vice president/president should be able topoke students as long as they are of age? A CEO of a major company should be able to tap new employees or interns as long as they are of age? A fire chief or police chief should be able to haunch new rookies as long as they are of age? A scout master should be able to pack a scout as long as they are of age?

228 I mean you make assumptions. You go to someone's fb and you see pictures with red cups and beer pong games and they are in college, so of course a future employer wouldn't assume anything from the pictures and of course they are going to hire you.

237 I don't understand the talk of her being underage, 17 is the legal stage in most states nowadays. Actually, 16 is legal in at least one(Oklahoma). I know that because I had a 27 year old teacher that used to flirt with me online when I was 16.

I'm not naive about this stuff, I've seen things go down in this world. Someone like Weiner isn't technically a pedophile, he's interested in girls that seem to be legal and there's no evidence he had sex with any minors. However, he's sick because he has an unnatural fascination with girls that LOOK like teens. It's one thing to look at a fully developed 16 year old(one that looks 20), and be sexually attracted to her. It happens. It's another thing entirely to be attracted to girls who don't really look mature at all. The Comely Coed is an exception(she's busty), most of these girls have girlish faces and look like teens. Even the porn star. Ginger Lee has that "sweet" look to her.

He has serious emotional problems.

238 "This reminds me of all the conservative breast beating about poor, abused, he-done-her-wrong Monica Lewinsky."

Whaaaaat? That was never the take on Lewinsky. The poor, abused woman done wrong in that situation was Linda Tripp, a perfectly innocent woman forced to "betray her friend" because her "friend" threatened her with a perjury trap and then had to endure one of the worst pre-Palin media homicide attempts.

Lewinsky was a scrunt almost as sleazy as Clinton himself.

Since I thought his comments were harsh, and apparently so did he, I've deleted them at his request.

As a general matter, commenting angry is just as bad idea as yelling angry at a friend.

Never looks like a good idea in retrospect.

I wouldnt want to ever cast scorn on the great work you did on this here Weiner topic, and I actually felt like they might after re-reading them. 251 Taking a step back.....

this whole thing makes me wonder how easy it would be for someone to frame/slander an otherwise innocent person. I don't do the social networking thing. Why? My intuition tells me the "17 year old blonde girl" is more likely to be a 48-year old transvestite or in the case of this guy (just maybe?) someone out to sabatoge his career; how easy would it be for anyone to frame anyone this way? Perhaps this was the girls intention all along.

We may think that this type of activityis morally improper, but we are making logical double if not triplesteps if we equate this with any type of real sexual activity OR if we equate this with CHILD sexual exploitation
... Legally (and by any other standard of definition)a child issomeone ofpre-pubescent age.....
this girl is not a child and there is nothing child-like about her or her online portfolio.
A 17 year old is in many states given majority status in regards to sexual activity with adults in the states where 17 year olds are not regarded as emancipated majority, there is not a singleone which does not regard persons this age as borderline-adults andtreat persons having sexual activity as if they where child-abusers.

In other words the retoric here equating Weiners activity to that of a child-abuser is entirely invalid and defies logic.

In this blog I read speculation that "if the girl sent Weiner a sexually explicit picture then HE should go to jail" (think about this folks, it was not his decision to do this, it was the girls) Speculation that Weiner should be served with vigilante violence for being a child molester (we already went through this above, the girl is NOT A CHILD and there was never anyphysical contact).

If there was something illegal, I am confident that there would be digital records of this and an arrest would be made.

There has not been an arrest.

So all we have here is a bunch of idle speculation by uninformed net-izens, most of which are probably guilty themselves ofwhat they accuse Weiner of.
