Former AGW Believer Turns AGW Skeptic; Says It's "Not Science"

Via Hot Air, where Jon Huntsman says he believes in global warming because 90% of scientists do, a great article. Worth reading in full.

The debate about global warming has reached ridiculous proportions and is full of micro-thin half-truths and misunderstandings. I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence, was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic. Watching this issue unfold has been amusing but, lately, worrying. This issue is tearing society apart, making fools out of our politicians.

Let’s set a few things straight.

The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s. But the gravy train was too big, with too many jobs, industries, trading profits, political careers, and the possibility of world government and total control riding on the outcome. So rather than admit they were wrong, the governments, and their tame climate scientists, now outrageously maintain the fiction that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant.

The whole "science" of global warming is based on a hunch. Carbon dioxide, itself, is not enough to warm the earth catastrophically. AGW skeptic and noted physicist Freeman Dyson has worked out the math-- even if you replaced every single particle of oxygen with carbon dioxide, the earth would only warm by about eight degrees. And since current CO2 levels are about 400 parts per million, obviously that is an absurd hypothetical.

But AGW posits there is a positive feedback mechanism. Some CO2 comes in, makes some more moist air, which itself is a greenhouse gas, which makes the earth warmer, which makes more CO2, which makes more moist air... And so on.

Almost the entirety of AGW theory is based on this postulated positive feeback mechanism.

There is no evidence for it. It's plausible, but a negative feedback mechanism is also plausible -- moist air makes clouds which reflects more sunlight away, mitigating any heating by adding some cooling shade.

Or maybe there's not really any strong feedback either way, neither positive nor negative.

The scientist points out that all the predictions of a positive feedback have failed. It is predicted that such positive feedback will produce masses of moist air over the tropics; there are none. We've sent lots of weather balloons to check, but no evidence of the key predictive claim of AGW "science."

They don't care. Because it's not science. It's faith.

At this point, official “climate science” stopped being a science. In science, empirical evidence always trumps theory, no matter how much you are in love with the theory. If theory and evidence disagree, real scientists scrap the theory. But official climate science ignored the crucial weather balloon evidence, and other subsequent evidence that backs it up, and instead clung to their carbon dioxide theory — that just happens to keep them in well-paying jobs with lavish research grants, and gives great political power to their government masters.

10 Way OT, but this is from the AP about the UBL raid.

Back at the White House Situation Room, word was relayed that bin Laden had been found, signaled by the code word “Geronimo.” That was not bin Laden’s code name, but rather a representation of the letter “G.” Each step of the mission was labeled alphabetically, and “Geronimo” meant that the raiders had reached step “G,” the killing or capture of bin Laden, two officials said.
I call BS. AP again covering for their marxist in the WH. Unless there has been a recent change, "Golf" is used to represent "G", not Geronimo.

12 As we have said many many times, there is no science. Science means a study and theory positied using scientific method. They have never even completed the first step of SM because they haven't even truly collected data and made a valid observation.

The entire scheme is a fraud and anyone pushing it belongs in jail. On the political stage a supporter of the AGW scam and crap and tax is dead. This is a single issue downer for me because it means you are one of three things as a politician

1. A communist using this to push your agenda

19 And since current CO2 levels are about 400 parts per million, obviously that is an absurd hypothetical.

If you accept the global warming "greenhouse gas" analogy, then if the amount of CO2 doubled, it would be like taking a greenhouse made of 10,000 panels and smashing 9992 of them and looking at all the warming that would result.

And nobody's talking about the doubling of CO2.

But, let's face it, all "science" is anymore is a hypothesis that doesn't involve the supernatural. The "scientific method" to most people is to ask somebody with a Ph.D. in something that sounds sciency.

52 This shit is funny because the global warmists are pissed that teachers must now teach both sides of the argument. Check out what one stupid parent has to say:

Los Al board passes global warming rule

LOS ALAMITOS - The city's school board is
requiring the teacher of an advanced-placement science class to present
"multiple perspectives" including the view that global warming is not
being caused by man, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The Los Alamitos Unified School Board voted 4-0 to require
that science teachers present "a balance of viewpoints" on controversial
items. A school board member, Jeffrey Barke, told the Orange County
Register that the policy is based on his concerns that "global warming
dogma" is being taught in local schools.

"There are two clearly divergent opinions on global warming,"
Barke told the newspaper. "There are those who believe that global
warming is a fact, created by man's impact on the environmental and the
consequences will be devastating."

Some parents in the district have criticized what they say is a political intrusion into a classroom.

"There is a consensus in the field that we have global warming
happening," said parent J.M. Ivler, who told the newspaper he has a
daughter in the district.

"This is not in dispute in the scientific community, it is in
dispute in the political community," he was quoted as saying. "This is a
science class. Teach science."

Let’s be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science, consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus.

As I see it, there are 3 possible situations in play.

1. The Earth is warming

2. The Earth is cooling

3. The Earth is in a period of stasis.

Given any of these, the only practical solution, if you must have one, is to adapt to the particular, thus ensuring, or at least maximizing your chances of survival.

The rest is scam and spin.

Rule #1: There's no reason to credit a brilliant scientist's insights on any subject outside his field.
Rule #2: In his field, Max Plank's Principle applies: "To get a new theory to gain acceptance, you have to wait for the old scientists to die." Hawking is no longer young, so I would take even his Physics pronouncements with a grain of salt.

Add to that the recent musings of Alan Carlin, the EPA physics PhD who told the EPA that they were wearing no clothes in regard to AGW.
From a policy perspective, the paper’s conclusions include the following:
· The economic benefits of reducing CO2 emissions may be about two orders of magnitude less than those estimated by most economists because the climate sensitivity factor is much lower than assumed by the United Nations because feedback is negative rather than positive and the effects of CO2 emissions reductions on atmospheric CO2 appear to be short rather than long lasting.
· The costs of CO2 emissions reductions are perhaps an order of magnitude higher than usually estimated because of technological and implementation problems recently identified.
· CO2 emissions reductions are economically unattractive since the few benefits remaining after the corrections for the above effects are quite unlikely to economically justify the much higher costs unless much lower cost geoengineering is used.
· The risk of catastrophic anthropogenic global warming appears to be so low that it is not currently worth doing anything to try to control it, including geoengineering.

So, the lesson here is not to be too hard on the Beaver when it comes to percieved threats. I still rather doubt that they do that in the upper atmosphere, and I especially doubt the "Ozone Layer" theory since it was posed in the early 20th century, well before any type of advanced methods of study, like satellites.

They asre even better than you can imagine because my family-union-Dem husband turned Conservative has a way of getting really blunt when my bro refuses to listen to what I say, and starts name calling.Between my husband and I (both confident, outspoken, intelligent, reasoned thinkers), my quiet yet snarky Conservative brother, my timid sister and my 'not picking a side' mom, get togethers are awesome.Until we started having kids of our own, we never had a Thanksgiving dinner that didn't end with someone getting pissed and leaving before dessert was served. I really thought it was the norm in every family.

Actually, no, it's not even plausible. Being someone who has studied control theory, thiswould bewhat you call an unstable situation - the least little blip in temperature would set it off this unstable mode, and the temperature would spiral upward until some other mechanism became dominant. And these scientists should be well aware of that.

177 Oh, Feynman... that guy was The Awesome in human form. His is the only clear, precise, anti-mystical explanation I've ever read of quantum behavior, from Lectures on Physics. Vol. 1, Ch. 37.

Posted by: George Orwell at May 17, 2011 05:40 PM (ODJgp)

178 It's really very simple. Of all the so-called green-house gases (water vapor, methane, CO2, ozone) the only one that is easily taxedis CO2. Who cares if it is only 0.04% of the atmosphere! Oh, and who cares that plants NEED fucking CO2. I'm guessing clear-cutting forrests to install windmills is not helping to reduce CO2.
The idea that that minute amount could heat up the other 99.96% of the atmosphere is like a BB stopping a Kenworth.

Posted by: Schwalbe : The © at May 17, 2011 05:41 PM (UU0OF)

179 Sorry, but some pointy-heads need to explain to me how gasses are able to stratify if they're in motion. I still rather doubt that they do that in the upper atmosphere, and I especially doubt the "Ozone Layer" theory since it was posed in the early 20th century, well before any type of advanced methods of study, like satellites.
From what this layman understands, the upper layers of the atmosphere are constantly pelted with micrometeorites, thus keeping the gasses stirred up.
I've probably asked this before, but since I'm a moron, I don't remember the answer.
Gasses just like any other element have different molecular weights. Visualize oil and water seperating into layers and realize that gasses don't have as much viscosity to slow down the seperation process. So yes, mixed gasses will seperate into stratified layers over time. Heavier gasses mix with the weather turbulance near the earth and the higher levels seperate into increasingly lighter gasses as pressure and density get lighter at higher altitudes.
The very highest level is known as Obama Farts.

Posted by: James Loughner at May 17, 2011 05:44 PM (PrXnz)

182 The whole "science" of global warming is based on a hunch.
That's undoubtedly putting it kindly. What happens is, that somebody notices an upward trend in the global temperature (as measured by hopelessly flawed instruments, BTW), gets the idea in their head that "evil" mankind is the culprit, and then self-annoints themselves as the Saviors of the entire world. Then, they start drawing up computer models, which leads to a desperate search for any mechanism that sounds even remotely "plausible" (if you don't think about it for over two seconds).
Such a process is the likely birthplace of CO2 "positive feedback", not a "hunch".

184 I seem to remember something called The Carbon Cycle, The Conservation Of Energy, The Conservation Of Mass, The Water Cycle, Latent Heat Of Vaporization; all of which work to disprove AGW. It's Science!

Posted by: High School Graduate at May 17, 2011 05:47 PM (IYLAL)

185 Also troublesome about this AGW cult is that the facts about CO2 were known for a long while -- it is not the magic greenhouse gas Al Gore and others try to claim.

Why did so many scientists throw in with this cult when they should've known better? If grants are causing this subversion of science then the whole damn practice needs review and better oversight. If this is about unicorns and a rainbows in some socialist utopia, they must resign from whatever "scientific" organization they belong to and run for office with the rest of the brain dead politicians.

I do recall some scientists asking one of the AGW proponents (I think it was Hansen but not sure now) about this CO2 problem and instead of an answer or reasonable explanation he got insulted for daring to question "the science".

Hansen should be fired right now. He should not be drawing a paycheck from tax payers. NASA is already running on borrowed respect -- if it does not begin divorcing itself from this cult then it will lose even more, not a prescription for future funding.

I still rather doubt that they do that in the upper atmosphere, and I especially doubt the "Ozone Layer" theory since it was posed in the early 20th century, well before any type of advanced methods of study, like satellites.

Ozone, or O3, is created constantly in the upper atmosphere by energetic particles and energy from solar radiation. It is "destroyed" when it chemically interacts with other stuff.

The reason why there's a "layer" of it is that the upper atmosphere is where he conditions exist that create it from O2, and it doesn't last long.

That's all, no mysteries, no magic, no need for complex explanations.

That's also why there are "holes at the poles," there's less sunlight and thus less creation of Ozone.

192 Why, when it comes to pundits and expert wannabes, do we give a voice.....EVER.....to someone that has something to gain by an opinion. These AGW freaks and so-called scientists all have government grants at risk if they do not back AGW!. In the real world, where we engineers live, you are not alowed an opinion if you have something to gain by that opinion. Can you say conflict of interest? Why then do we ever give media time or space to anyone but independent experts? AGW does not exist in any long term form that is measureable. CO2 is a necessary gas and we cannot live without it. In fact we need more not less CO2. The earth's growing regions have been moving towards the equator, which among other things means potentially less food and O2. Personally, I like food and O2. Do you?
