Fact-Check On Obama's Speech Determines... Well, He Did Produce a Birth Certificate, So There Is That

Slim pickings past that, though, as Jake Tapper notes Obama basically gets two facts right:

1. There is a country called "Mexico," and

2. It has a border.

Well, it's not the actual facts, it's just that they are deployed to be so misleading as to border on truth. He claims the "border fence" is "almost" complete, which might suggest, to the ignorant, that we almost have a fence all the way across our border. Not even close. He means the tiny amount of fence mandated by Congress has almost been built... and that covers about 650 miles of our nearly 2000 mile border with Mexico.

So, done and done!

He also claims we've doubled our border patrol "since 2004." Well, okay, but what's this "we" business, Obama?

Even allowing him to date his build up from the middle of the Bush presidency -- he has only increased border agents about 15% on the southern border.

Yes, we have added thousands and thousands of border agents... to guard the Canadian border.

As of April 9, 2011, there were 20,745 Border Patrol agents nationwide an increase of approximately 3,246 since President Obama took office.

And what about those agents on the US-Mexican border? Surely thats what many in the audience thought the president was talking about as he stood on the border and talked about border agents not those in Buffalo, NY.

As of October 2008, there were 15,442 Border Patrol agents at the Southwest border. There are currently 17,659 Border Patrol Agents between the more than 160 ports of entry on the Southwest border.

Thats an increase of 2,217 Border Patrol agents on the Southwest border in two years.

The administration has made it a goal to have 18,000 Border Patrol agents at the Southwest border by October 2011.

We need border agents for other purposes besides the Mexican border, but to speak of those agents achieving other purposes in the context of a speech about immigration from Mexico and parts south is deliberately misleading.

Thanks to DrewM.

that covers about 650 miles of our nearly 2000 mile border with Mexico.

Not to mention that a significant fraction of that fence is an anti-vehicle barrier, and doesn't keep out pedestrians.

30 See, another thing Bush and the Rs did that BO is taking credit for:

From link:

Its an unusual metric for the president to compare the number of
Border Patrol agents now to the number there were four years before his
presidency began, but what the president says is accurate.
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004
increased the number of Border Patrol agents by 2,000 annually from
FY2006, when there were a total of 12,349 Border Patrol agents, to FY2010, when there were 20,511.
A more apt comparison might be to look at how many Border Patrol
agents there were when President Obama took office and compare that to
now.

Tapper does this on the website so he can say "see look I am doing my job." It is just a way for the LSM to not report it non stop on TV each night where it would really put a dent in Obama's hope and change bullshit.

I think things have changed. Companies like Wal-Mart can get nailed pretty hard if it is found they are (knowingly) using illegals. And supposedly they are also held accountable for the cleaning crews in the store.
But that's just a big IF. I've always thought that it was far more expedient for the gov and business to let this whole illegal thing just go by as they looked the other way.
And you can come up for your own reasons why.

Posted by: HH at May 10, 2011 07:55 PM (6oDXl)

64 I'm confused, Drew M. Let's do some (gasp) math:
OK, we've got 20,745 total in APR2011, but 17,659 along the SW"now". So that leaves about3,086 covering the rest of the border (including Canada)"now".
As of JAN2009, it says there were17,499 total, but doesn't break out how many were along the SW. There has been an increase of 3,246, which is about the number that current guard everything else. So unless there were no guards along the Canadian border before, figure most of those 3200 were along the SW. So there were probably about 14,400 along the SW then. But, wait! We're about to see that there were 1000 more than that a few months earlier, so apparently Obama's breakdown is more like 2200 added along the SW, and 1000 more elsewhere, since taking office. The non-SW border must have had about 2000 when he took office, and is now more like 3000.
As of OCT2008 it says 15,442 in the SW, but no total number. If we had to guess, we'd add about 2000, and get about17,500.
OK, now let's go back to 2004. Um... we can't. The article give no numbers for 2004.
The 15% (actually, 14%)increase seems torefer tothe increase from 15,442 to 17,659 for the SW from OCT2008 to "now".
So the data suggests that it's possible that the SW patrols doubled from 2004 to today. "We" could simply mean "The United States" - the "royal We"(although I'm sure he likes to make it sound like it was him), and maybe there was a big increase from 2004 through 2008 (under Bush). It wouldn't be the first time he "took credit" for what Bush did. Or he could just be full of it.
Anywayyour last sentence, "Yes, we have added thousands and thousands of border agents... to guard the Canadian border." Doesn't add up. There are fewer than 3000 total up there now, according to your article.

Posted by: Optimizer at May 10, 2011 07:57 PM (F56VB)

Posted by: Beto at May 10, 2011 08:04 PM (H+LJc)

68 In other words, perhaps Bush had about 9,000 along the SW in 2004, added about 7,000 from 2004-2008 (to get to about 16k), and Obama added about 2,000 more, resulting in an increase from 9k to 18k since 2004.
Regardless, the point isn't how "vast" a %increase this is or isn't - the point should be whether there's enough now. If the number has doubled and they still can't seal the border, that just tells you how much of a joke the old number was. It doesn't tell you that you have a huge number now.

73 Yes, we have added thousands and thousands of border agents... to guard the Canadian border.

--Don't get me started. Those agents on the border sure were punctilious questioning this American citizen who works in Canada about his marital arrangements and the legitimacy of his wife's Green Card. I sure wish they were as dedicated to protecting the really dangerous border on the other side of the country, but no, we gotta make sure white-collar Americans coming from Canada get properly grilled.

You can bet if the Federal Government tries alligators anywhere it
will be on the Canadian border. The program will be set to start next
January 15th.

Would these alligators be Wooly alligators by any chance??

76 Thank God. Those damn Canadians just won't stop pouring over the border.
But if you close the northern border, Buffalo's economy will crash without the dollar-at-par shoppers.

78 Gas had trickled down to $3.81 in this area, then within a few hours -bang- $4.09!

Then, a few hours later, $3.99.

This is not the first time it's done this at my local stations.

WTF?

Posted by: nickless at May 10, 2011 08:50 PM (MMC8r)

79 I can't believe he really said that lame moats with alligators line.

If we were to say, "They won't be satisfied until every school teacher is required to learn Spanish," or "They won't be satisfied until California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are ceded to Mexico," it would be far more accurate.

actually, the point I was making is that it is only obvious to the people here. I just had to tell my friend not to fill up her car until later in the week, to just put in enough gas to tide her over since gas prices have to come down since oil is going down. She literally had no idea.

I actually do see quite a few Canuck license plates milling about town, when I get down there. The extra 1000 border dudes probably has to do with the newextra hassles to get across the border these days. You used to need an honest face, and a car with theplates of a US state. Now you need a passport, or some sort of enhanced driver's license.

The thing on the SW border is that Obama's trying to make it sound like the border is being taken care of, when maybe it really isn't. Can even18,000 people (which meansless than6,000, at any given time)stop 500,000 (or is it 1,000,000?) from crossing a 2600 mile border - even if it's double the number from seven years ago? Still sounds like a tough job to me.
The realquestion to be answered is, "Do we have enough yetto stop illegal immigration?" I think the answer is "no", but Obama is giving you happy talk insteadof adding enough to reallyget the job done. It's not about how many border guards there are, it's about whether the border is secure.Just like with the "fence" business, it'spropaganda cover for not doinganything.

90 Yeah, call me back when the border is actually, you know, secure. Obama is displaying the classic Washington pathology of arguing that because more resources are being thrown at the problem that's good enough, regardless of whether the problem is actually solved.

We'll have the border under control, at the EARLIEST, when the number of illegal aliens in the country starts going down. Until then, the problem ain't solved, and any sort of amnesty is off the table.

95 Listen to
the speech and you will hear something even more disturbing than
mere demagoguery. When the President talks about the (unfinished) wall and
enforcement of immigration laws, the largely Hispanic audience responds with
sustained booing. They do not want either the wall or enforcement of any immigration laws. The
President overlooks this fact in his pursuit of political advantage. The
Republicans could use that response in campaign ads, but will be gutless as
always. Some Republican candidate for President could use this to great effect
rallying anti-immigration sentiment, but I doubt they will (see Steyns America
Alone) use it.
I am a high school teacher in Houston, Texas. I understand both the push and pull
factors involved in the immigration debate. Texas will have a plurality of voting aged
Hispanic citizens within the next couple of decades. Those citizens will have
been born here as all US native-born citizens are.
The question of
legalization of their non-citizen relatives is an entirely separate question. I
feel the question of allowing foreign workers should be separate from the
question of a legal path to citizenship. The US
economy can use the increased labor force, but to dilute the concept of
citizenship and respect for the rule of law is
unacceptable.
