WaPo Invites Trump To Correspondent's Dinner To Get Goofed On By Obama and Host Seth Meyers

I thought, dumbly I guess, that Trump would actually get to go to the dais and speak. Wouldn't that make it more interesting? You know the guy is going to get ripped; wouldn't it be more interesting to let him give the "rebuttal" as they do in a roast?

I'm not even talking about fairness -- I'm talking about entertainment value, which this yearly paean to Obama's aweomeness could surely use.

As Allah notes, the days of daring, edgy attacks on the President ended January 2009. I imagine we'll go back to the Old Ways beginning January 2013.

So you have two antagonists here and you could have a bit of a show but no, of course you set it up so it's Obama goofing on Trump, and then Seth Meyers goofing on Trump, and the liberal audience galing in (somewhat forced, I-agree-with-you-so-I'm-laughing laughter at Trump, and Trump just sitting there.

Trump didn't get to respond until a phone call on Fox & Friends.

Not sure why Trump went under those circumstances. I'm pretty sure that in one of the old Apprentice episodes, back when he used to give business aphorisms between segments, he must have said Business is about being in control and arranging the situation to your advantage.

I have to note yet again: Obama seems overly proud of his success in producing a common form of identification, a bit like a nine-year-old who proudly fills out his name and address on an identification insert card in his first plastic wallet.

Hmm: Obama goofs on patriotism?

Every Joke Obama Tells Seems To Be Double-Edged And Not In A Good Way: Claiming he's going to show his official birth video, Obama shows the birth of Simba (or whoever) in Lion King.

This is funny in the baiting about his alleged African birth. Okay, that's fine.

But then he's also got working there the Messiah/Chosen One/God's Son thing working there. When Simbama is held up and the whole world kneels in respect... hm. I don't think I'd've gone there since that is a central fault of his psychology.

Pretty Obvious Who Their Boyfriend Is: Instapundit writes:

. Trump had to be smirking at the attention, but its a pathetic commentary that the allegedly independent White House Press Corps served as a vehicle for an incumbent President to bash his most vocal challenger. I mean, I know that theyre a bunch of partisan sycophants, but do they have to be so obvious about it?

Here's a good example: When Obama makes one joke at his own expense -- about his poll numbers -- the crowd actually gasps before laughing a little, nervously.

They're actually upset and a little shocked at the mention of that.

You hear that reaction at Comedy Central roasts -- about dark subjects like birth defects and cancer.

So, for the Washington Press Corps, mention of Obama's weak poll numbers has, for them, the same effect as a mention of molestation or cancer.

That's what's taboo and edgy to them: A quick mention of a relevant polling figure.

I've known very few arrogant narcissists who were funny at all.
Part of being amusing as President is self deprecating humor. After all, such a high status position allows the person holding it quite a bit of latitude at humor at ones own expense, without losing hand/status/respect.
Owaffle, a prickly, humorless man with a messiah complex can't even pull that off.

19 I really hate it when conservatives act as thin-skinned as Obama and his bootlickers.
Trump went into the lion's den willingly. He got mauled. Obama was appearing before his base, the media and high ranking government officials. Nobody was going to make any hard hitting jokes about him.
None of this should surprise or upset any conservatives. It actually should please us, because these assholes think they really got one over on Trump and the rest of us knuckledraggers, but (a) nobody was watching, and (b) they are all drinking each other's bathwater now and they are allin denial that the rest of the country hates all of them and can't wait to throw their asses out in 2013.
I thought the real takeaway of the evening was Obama's acknowledgment that his poll numbers are in the toilet and things have changed drastically for him since he became President.

I'll offer the theory why he will always bomb at these. First he is incredibly thin skinned andhis ego makes him incapable of really making self deprecating jokes about himself which are go to jokes for things like this. And also since no comedian ever really has made jokes about him, he has no clue as to what would work for him to talk about jokingly.
And I'll add that the only jokes he really knows how to tell about himself is how awesome he is. Which work as well as Daniel Tosh's "Roast" that he had on Tosh.0.

The president later returned and took his seat.

According to news reports, the NATO airstrike came as Kadafi and his wife were visiting the house of his son, Seif al Arab Kadafi, in Tripoli. Libyan officials said the strike killed the younger Kadafi, who was 29, along with three of Moammar Kadafis grandchildren.

I thought Meyers was awful, not because he went after Trump but because he didn't go after Obama at all. He told one week "I like the 2008 you better" thing and the crowd groaned.

Remember Don Imus doing this gig back in the Billy Jeff years? At least he had the balls to go after Clinton with Clinton sitting right there. Meyers, shocingly, was a partisan hack. Worse than that he was a coward. So much for the brave truth tellers in the world of entertainment.

Oh and Trump...he's an idiot for going there and not thinking this would happen. The fact he couldn't even feign a smile shows he's as thin skinned as Obama is. 64 It was pathetic, but there was no reason for Trump to go into something like this without fully expecting some jokes at his expense without a response. Yeah, Obama and Meyers went overboard, but at least some jokes along these lines are completely predictable at the Correspondent's Dinner and to be expected (as is not getting a response if you're sitting in the audience).

What I thought was interesting, which there hasn't been many comments on, is the response to the Paul Ryan joke.

Obama made a crack (not funny at all, of course) about Ryan's plan and, even with a favorable crowd, got a very weak response and even some booing.

It was like a Bill Maher joke, except when told by Bill Maher to an audience that doesn't like him. People acknowledged it as an attack rather than a joke, didn't laugh, some started booing, and then finally some people clapped merely to counteract everybody else.

Seth Meyers is a joke.

Back in October 2004 he played John Kerry in a lousy SNL skit.

The skit was set in a bar back in the late '60's. Young George Bush, Bill Clinton, and John Kerry were at the bar. Bush and Clinton were portrayed as a couple of yahoos.

Kerry [Seth Myers] was in his Navy uniform. Myers played him straight; no jokes.

Kerry was the patriot; the hero; the only presidential man out of the three.

In other words, the skit was complete garbage and a lie.

82 Well played, David Axelrod, well played.

Trump goes on a rant about the Obama BC, or lack thereof.
A lot of Republicans quietly or enthusiastically go along with Trump.
A few days before the "nerd party", with feigned reluctance, the White House releases the "long form" birth certificate.
Trump wanders into WH for the "nerd party" banquet as the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast guest of honor. The whole event is sold as Obama vs. The GOP contender, Donald Trump.

Results:

a) Trump is awarded near-equal billing with the President
b) The GOP is tagged as the party of birthers in front of the word's media empires.
c) Romney was attacked far more brutally than Trump with just one "joke".
d) A whole weekend was deflected away from the country's economic and foreign policy disasters and was, instead, devoted to the brilliant "attack" by the President on a media personality.

The White House really, really wants Trump to be a player in the GOP primaries.

88 The only thing I've come away from the whole short/long COLB experience is that until Trump started talking about hiring professional investigators Obie wanted to tie up disclosure of the long COLB from public view. Seeing that there's not much to be made of the long COLB except layers, man, layers I'd have to assume that the thought of professional investigators hired by a mega-millionaire sniffing around Hawaii precipitated the sudden desire to put the thing out there.

90 From Politico:

Donald Trump pushed
back Sunday at President Barack Obama for making him the "focus of the
evening" in his White House Correspondents' Dinner speech, and laced
into Saturday Night Live comedian Seth Meyers as a "stutterer" whose
delivery was lacking.

Trump's comments came in a quick phone-in to "Fox and Friends," a day
after he sat almost stone-faced while the president and Meyers ripped
him repeatedly, to belly laughs from the crowd. People at tables around
him gaped at him watching for a reaction, and some of his tablemates
wrote on Twitter that it was uncomfortable.

"Well, I really understood what I was getting into I didn't know that
I'd be virtually the sole focus," Trump said. "I guess when you're
leading in the polls that sort of thing tends to happen. But I was
certainly in a certain way having a good time listening. I don't think
the American people are having a good time with $5 gas. ... I was
thinking to myself as they were doing this, you know, the American
people are really suffering and we're all" having fun at a gala.

"I thought Seth Meyers his delivery frankly was not good," Trump added. He's a stutterer."

Someone born with dual citizenship (as Obama himself claims) wouldn't make the cut.The definition of 'natural born' could have been decided differently at some point, but I don't see how since the only time it comes into play is in presidential eligibilty. I'd sure like to know what the facts are on that. And now that all thebroohaha about his birth place is over, maybe people can take a sober and adult look at this issue. How can someone prove they are a 'natural born' citizen if no one knows for sure what 'natural born' is? And is it really something we should require for presidential eligibility these days?

155 Am I the only one who gets the strong impression that Chris Wallace doesn't care for Michelle Bachmann?
After watching that interview, I'm not sure how anyone could like Bachmann as a presidential candidate. She's veryclearly and obviouslynot even close to beingready.Being an attractive, entertaining female doesn't change that.
Her solution for cutting Medicare expenses? Increased "efficiencies", and tocure diseases like diabetes. Holy shit! Why has no one considered before now that curing diabetes is a good idea? Someone should get on that.
Regarding Libya, she cited 30,000-40,000 "potentially" being killed by NATO air strikes. Her source? Qaddafi's Libyan ambassador.
The falsestereotype that attracive women are dumb? Bachmann isn't exactly helping todebunk that one.

156 How are Bush and Cheney pushing up gas and food prices two years out of office?

Do they have some sort of machine?

Posted by: MFM at May 01, 2011 01:44 PM

Yeah, it's a pretty damn cool machine too. They programmed it to create hurricanes to wipe out Black people in the South in 2005. They programmed it to create earthquakes and tsunamis after that. Then just this past week, they programmed it to create Tornados.

And now they've reprogrammed it once again to drive up the prices of gasoline and food.

Those evil geniuses.

158 I really hate it when conservatives act as thin-skinned as Obama and his bootlickers.

Posted by: rockmom at May 01, 2011 01:02 PM (Y01Pi)

Rockmom, I really like your posts, and you're right on several counts. This was one of the more hard hitting WHCD's in recent years. To me, it seemed Myrers made it clear that Obama will have a hard time getting reelected on the issues. I particularly liked when he said 2008 Obama could beat him. It is not an easy job, certainly doesn't allow for on the job training, and Obama has fucked up royally. Nobody made the Democrats spend so much, and the smug attitudes of many in the Capitol turns a lot of Americans off, like the sit by your "enemy" at the SOTU address stunt, when it's clear they're all going to the same parties afterward. These events have become tastelessly lavish, which Myers also pointed out, subtly including Obama again. But the lobbyists have been running the show for a while.

Trump has to be a bigger narcissist than Obama to not realize what a joke he is to so many Americans. Then to start this populist pitch when responding to the jokes. This guy said people were going to be surprised what he turned up, and he promised he had the goods. Then he had nothing. But he thinks he can then start talking about the "serious" stuff like trade wars with China and bitch-slapping OPEC. How does this not embarrass the GOP?

You actually have some decent candidates, though few of them can actually win. But at least they've been in politics for years and can argue the facts. Trump cannnot, which is why he just went for the sensational, low-hanging fruit. He is a proven liar.

I barely remembered the poll joke, because it's a long way to November 4. The Will I Am joke made more of an impression.

159 Remember this?

Barack Obamas half-brother was denied entry to the UK
after being accused of a serious crime on an earlier visit, the Home
Office has confirmed.
Samson Obama, who lives in Kenya, was on
his way to the US presidential inauguration in January when he was
stopped at East Midlands Airport.
According to the News of the World, fingerprint tests linked him to an alleged sex attack on a British girl.
He was questioned but not charged over the incident in Berkshire, it added.
A
Home Office spokesman said Samson Obama was denied a visa after
immigration officers noticed one of his documents was false. That led
them to further inquiries.
Samson Obama, who runs a mobile phone
shop outside Nairobi, had been planning to make a short break in the UK
on his way to Washington.
He eventually took a connecting flight to the US without formally entering the UK

The only definition I've seen, to be natural born BOTH parents had to be US citizens AND the child born in the US. Someone born with dual citizenship (as Obama himself claims) wouldn't make the cut.

If that's the only definition you've seen it's because you insist on only reading "definitions" at birther sites.

Is this a serious question? Trump isn't the GOP. He's a private citizen/entertainer who just represents himself and always has. What's embarrassing is that the President is so thin-skinned that a blowhard like Trump gets a rise out of him. What's embarrassing to the GOP is that Trump fills a vacuum caused by members of a so-called opposition party who should have all the fucking momentum after last November afraid to take on the Indonesian Imbecile and content to let the MFM set the narrative and trot out nutless shitheads like Graham to the Sunday gab shows.

171 Trump isn't the GOP.

When you poll the GOP base and read conservative blogs he is. I've barely heard mention of any other candidates except for Mitch Daniels.

What's embarrassing is that the President is so thin-skinned that a blowhard like Trump gets a rise out of him.

When you call the President of the United States a foreign impostor, you better have evidence to back up your claims, or you look frankly ridiculous. Trump was embarrassed, or he would have been if he were anyone other than Trump.

Trump fills a vacuum caused by members of a so-called opposition party

Trump creates the vacuum by taking up oxygen. No one wants to begin running this early in the game, but Obama sucks so bad, that the media wants to start the 2012 election season early, giving Obama an even bigger advantage by making Republicans spend more money and getting them bloodied up for him before the real fight begins.

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at May 01, 2011 04:45 PM (mHQ7T)

172 @170 another developing story is that the people in Alabama and Mississippi aren't sitting around waiting for the Fedral Gubmint to help them after the tornado outbreak disaster. Obama isn't going to get any traction out of "doing a better job than Bush did with Katrina" because the churches and Salvation Army have already gone in and done more than the Gubmint ever could. The MBM are justdying to write this story so they can pump up their boyfriend somehow, but they won't be able to.

Posted by: rockmom at May 01, 2011 04:46 PM (Y01Pi)

173 All those who said Trump should go after the school records now and believed he was helping the GOP look pretty foolish now. That's the real bitterness here.

174 Obama isn't going to get any traction out of "doing a better job than Bush did with Katrina" because the churches and Salvation Army have already gone in and done more than the Gubmint ever could.

It's the headline everywhere you look. I never blamed Bush for Katrina, so this is hardly my idea of a pissing match. But Democrats are a different story, while independents are happy to see Obama look presidential for once. Just imagine. If he had been invited to the Royal Wedding, he would have missed this opportunity.

177 I am hoping one day they change these dinners to utilized the old vaudeville etiquette. That includes the ability to throw rotten fruits and vegetables at the "comedian".

Can you imagine Obama getting hit in the head with a rotten melon? Priceless.

Now that's funny.
