A Kind of Magic: Concerned Lefties Very Worried Japan Quake Caused By Global Warming

I almost wrote this prediction last night, but felt the unfolding story was too serious to play around with such partisan attacks.

In fact, this is not the first time earthquakes have been blamed by the Shamanistic, Magical-Thinking Left on the all-purpose Zeus-substitute of global warming. There is even a somewhat plausible (but completely bullshitty and made-up) mechanism proposed for such an unlikely causation: That when glacial ice melts it relieves pressure on the tectonic plates beneath it and thus allows such plates to shift a bit more, producing earthquakes. (Whether graphitic rock ten miles or more deep is significantly weighted down by a cover of ice no more than 300 or 500 feet thick, and whether a melting of such ice by no more than 10-20% is enough to cause such massive planetary dislocations, is a question of math and probability, and so doesn't fuss the shamans of the left too much.)

But via Hot Air, Tim Blair catches the usual idiots making the predictable animal-noises, and Reuters, of course, rushes to quote the one crank who thinks that global warming may cause earthquakes.

One concerned shaman demands to know: "And they say global warming isn't real?"

To which I answer: Yes, that's what They say, and it's because of silly-shit magical thinking of later-day neo-shamans like this.

When we hear about sunspots affecting global climate, it's the specific Tuz-Pik sunspots we're talking about. These are named for the Soviet astronomers who discovered them and first suspected their significance.
Unlike regular sunspots, Tuz-Pik sunspots are actually warmer than the surface of the sun. As a result, more energy is radiated from the sun, and the earth's climate does in fact get warmer. However, because of the Tupitsa Effect (so named for the Russian climatologist who discovered it) Tuz-Pik sunspots actually appear cooler when observed from the earth's poles, due to the refractive nature of the atmosphere.
Everyone knows that some sunspots have an effect on the earth's climate. What's only starting to gain acceptance is that most of the changes to the earth's climate are only indirectly caused by Tuz-Pik sunspots. The major factor is the increase in air conditioner use near the equator and tropics and the increase of heating fuel consumption in the temperate and polar regions due to the mistaken percention that Tuz-Piks are cooler than the sun.
The effects spiral thusly. A more detailed explanation requires nonlinear integral within a Laplasse transformation -- complex, to say the least.
The global warming crowd, as much as I hate to admit it, is actually right on this issue, overall. What I hate about these people is the way they say it's just carbon dioxide from fossil fuels. It's not, and saying otherwise is a lie, a condescending tactic to get everyone to do what they want because they think we're to dumb to grasp it. (Perhaps that's true, but it pisses me off just the same.)
The worst part, however, is the increasing probability of what's known as the Pizdyuka Scenario. Should this occur -- and some say that it already has happened -- ....

94 STRATFOR: Red Alert: Nuclear Meltdown at Quake-Damaged Japanese Plant
The report by STRATFOR is possibly the most lame and brain damaged report I’ve every seen in all my life. What is clear is that these folks haven’t a f-ing clue what is going on in these nuclear plants.
As the pile of nuclear material in the containment vessel gets hotter and hotter it will create a bit of hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O) gas from the moderating water (H2O) causing a build up in pressure. The operators usually vent some of this excess gas into the containment building which surrounds the containment vessel. Over time this creates a very explosive environment within the containment building till .. “pop” .. the containment explodes. (Hydrogen gas usually explodes in a quick almost invisible pop). This is not a “meltdown.”
While this isn’t a good situation, this isn’t the biggest problem they have on their plate. They still must finish cooling the containment vessel, which they can probably still do even with the containment building in rubble, so the pile won’t melt into a molten nuclear mass at the bottom of the containment vessel (or worse, melt through the bottom of the vessel). At this point it seems that the damage to the reactor most likely will be irreparable, but it’s not the end of the world.

96 Ace,
Using the thought-experiment-numbers you threw out, a 10 mile thick "plate" of rock with a 500 foot thick ice layer, one can get a handle on the situation using facts.
Water (and ice) are roughly 1/3 the density of the rock in the earths outer crust. And a 500 foot thick ice layer is approximately 1/100th of the 10 mile cross section we're considering. So even if the ice layer were completely melted, it would only represent 1/3 of 1 percent of the weight of the entire "column" of rock that can be usedas amodel of a cross section of the earth's crust.
A number 2 orders of magnitude less than the "system" as a whole; pretty much statistically insignifigant...And even if it were "suddenly" removed by a zeus-like deity, weight isn't the only force acting on the rock section; there's the friction of the rock directly adjacent as well. And while I don't have the exact figures for the friction or shear strength of the rock, in a section measured in miles I'm sure it's much greater than the weight of an ice cap measured in 100's of feet.
Which confirms, through reason and logic, that this latest gaia nonsense is bubkis.
Now I'm no geologist, but only a humble rocket scientist; but the math remains the same. You can ask one of your math whiz pals to check me on this.
My Regards.

Posted by: Lemon Kitten at March 12, 2011 03:50 PM (0fzsA)

110 No, it's not global warming that is causing earthquakes, it's global cooling.
What happens when things cool? Yep, they contract. As the Earth's mantle cools (and it has been cooling pretty much ever since it coalesced into a planet) it shrinks. When the mantle shrinksthecrust plates floating upon it have less room, and something has to give, so one plate slides under another (subduction) and you get exactly the kind of quakes that hit New Zealand and Japan.
Screw global warming. What we need is some serious global heating so that the mantle expands and the plates float apart from each other, Then, no more earthquakes!
What? It's as good a story as the Global Warmists'.

I was fine with it until one of the chickies, in that breathless "listen to this, because, it's, like, so important and true and junk" tone of the True Believer, started yammering on aboutthe "link" between gloal warming andearthquakes. They then cut to another idiot who explained the "melting ice caps cause higher sea levels and reduce pressure on the plates" bullshit theory in that same worshipful tone - at which point I screamed a few choice obscenities at the TV and switched the thing off.I'm surprised those dipshits are bright enough totie their own shoes.

121 It's true that the underlying crust of the Earth rebounds once the glaciers retreat from it but it doesn't happen immediately. The crust around the Great Lakes is still rebounding from the last ice age 20,000 years ago. The advent of the industrialization the global warming doomsday weenies claim boiled the Earth only happened a century ago.
The global warmer pinheads have a cartoon view of events. They make wild jumps in logic when claiming cause and effect and they are unable to judge differences in magnitude between superhuman events.

128 I learned in 8th grade Earth Science that there are tiny earthquakes, called "isostatic readjustment" quakes, that are the result of the earth springing back up from underneath the weight of the Ice Age glaciers that once buried the northern quarter of the US and all of Canada. The quakes don't go above Richter 3.5 or so, and most of the time people don't even notice them. My EarSci teacher described it as movement similar to grass springing back up after being stepped on, but measured in geologic time.

The Japanese tragedy was not caused by a shiver of verticle movement. The plate, from what I've been reading, shifted so far that the force of it moved the earth's axis 20cm!! and the coast of Japan moved 8 meters.

That's not grass...

131 You knew it wouldn't take long. Here's apost on FB by a raging loon I've had dealings with in the past:
Hi ****, it's not your ink fumes! There's agreement in the Scientific community that we are experiencing measurable global warming which does affect weather conditions, creating more natural disasters (including drought, hurricanes or typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis and other forms of severe weather.) It's interesting to note that our media coverage is far greater for such disasters as the quake and tsunami in Japan when the death toll worldwide is far greater due to drought.
To that list I would add low tire pressure, the heartbreak of psoriasis, and slipping dentures. Some people you just can't use logic and reason with...they are just too entrenched. Stupids.

134 The mechanism is not "completely bullshitty and made-up". In the UK, we have earthquakes in Scotland which are caused by the rebound from the ice age glaciers. The land is rising about 1mm year. Here the melting of such ice is not "no more than 10-20%" but almost all the ice is gone.

This was obviously not the cause of the Japanese earthquake, which is in a subduction zone. I understand they claimed that in future, lost ice could cause earthquakes and then tsunamis. More likely at the poles obviously, where there is more ice to loss so more rebound will occur.

Even the most shameless lefty couldn't possibly sink that low..."

*sigh*

But of course, the left sinks to new lows virtually every day. The depths of stupidity with some of these people is simply bottomless.

On the good side- when the nutballs demonstrate so clearly how their cult will blame litterally EVERYTHING on global warming, those on the fence tend to drift back over to the sane side, finally realizing what a bunch of loons are on the MMglowarm cult side.
