Profiles in Courage: Obama and Wisconsin [Fritzworth]

I look at the Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll most mornings, mostly to see what correlation if any there appears to be between current events and Pres. Obama's approval/disapproval ratings. And it seems pretty clear that the Wisconsin debacle has had an impact.

This probably explains why the White House is now denying any involvement in the protests, in spite of Obama's own public statements criticizing Gov. Walker and the evidence that the DNC and Obama's personal campaign action group, Organizing For America, were clearly involved, as the Washington Post itself reported (same article):

The president's political machine worked in close coordination Thursday with state and national union officials to mobilize thousands of protesters to gather in Madison and to plan similar demonstrations in other state capitals.

Their efforts began to spread, as thousands of labor supporters turned out for a hearing in Columbus, Ohio, to protest a measure from Gov. John Kasich (R) that would cut collective-bargaining rights.

Note that all three news sources I quoted -- NY Times, Washington Post, and Politico -- are left-leaning media; I'm not quoting Beck, Rush, and O'Reilly here.

Now as for the impact. If you look at the recent history of the Rasmussen Approval Index (Strongly Approve - Strongly Disapprove), you'll see that Pres. Obama wasn't doing too badly -- for an 11-day stretch there (2/7 to 2/17), his rating fluctuated between -11 and -7. But it was on Thursday, Feb 17th, that Obama spoke out again Governor Walker and in support of the protesting unions. Let's look at how his score changes:

2/17: -9 (Obama criticizes Walker and the Wisconsin Pubs)
2/18: -14
2/19: -15
2/20: -18
2/21: -18
2/22: -20 (White House denies involvement in Wisconsin protests)

Bam! Down 11 points in 5 days, and over a holiday weekend, no less. Note that it's been three (3) months since Obama's index has been down at -20. That makes it hard to explain that as being tied to anything but the Wisconsin kerfuffle. And so now the White House is scrambling on Tuesday to disassociate itself from something it jumped into with both feet on Friday Thursday.

As Ben Smith at Politico puts in, "DNC, under the bus." Smith sounds just a bit ticked that the White House is calling his reporting "overblown", and with good reason. But it is fun to watch. ..fritz..

If this happens, I think it will be Armageddon for the Dems and a Calvin Coolidge / Ronald Reagan moment for Walker.

It will make unions and Dem support of them a key issue in 2011 and 2012 at the least. Considering that Obama's pretty much owned by various unions such as the SEIU, it will end up killing his chances at re-election, especially in the midwest where Ground Zero is occurring.

Asbestos abatement, hazardous waste, radiation work. I was exploring the idea of going into RadCon or Environmental Safety and Health.

From what I remember on the job site, HPs were individuals with college degrees.

D*mn confidentiality... that's what my current client does. Unfortunately, I can't tell you who my current client is, or I might could hook you up with some job listings...

I do know that a couple of Environmental Waste type companies have been hiring like crazy. I don't know that it's been in your field, specifically, but they have been.

I think that's as close as I can get, safely, without violating some agreements...

101 But WTF???!!! USA-Today is reporting Gallup numbers saying something like over 60 percent of those polled say that unions should not get hammered like this.

Most of the ones I knew had 2 yr degrees from community colleges. Some had a BS and an HP "Masters" which you could get by taking one quarter of BS health physics courses.

I made similar agreements at my old job. I was simply a dumb-ass laborer working at K-25.

It's all in how you phrase the questions and then weight the samples to get the result you want.

105 The questions about Libya having an impact on the polls are good ones, but frankly I think the WH has done a better job of keeping its head down and its mouth shut than it did on Egypt -- and it's telling how little apparent impact the Administration's hot-and-cold handling of Egypt had on this particular index (I like Vic's comment about it being the 'give a damn' index). This could be a delayed reaction to Egypt, with a helping of Syria on top of that, but I don't think so -- I think it is exactly tied to Wisconsin. More than that, I think it's tied at least in part to the behavior of the Wisconsin Dems -- in other words, Obama's paying the price for the Feckless Fourteen (yes, Morons, 'feckless' is a real word in and of itself -- go look it up).

On the other hand, I heard that Mitch Daniels just caved. I think over the next two years, we're going to see which Pubs have real...spines, and which ones don't. ..fritz..

106 I had never heard of Scott Walker until about a week ago. If he doesn't go wobbly at any point, this could be an Andy Dufresne moment for him:

Crawling through a river of shit and coming out clean on the other side.

107 The whole voting present while the Middle East erupts is probably not sitting well with the public either.

108 Funny... gonna be kind hard for Obama to change his image to the fiscal guy...

Just you wait. When public opinion goes unambiguously for Repubs, Obama will say that was his idea all along and claim credit for achieving a bipartisan solution.

109 This probably explains why the White House is now denying any involvement in the protests, in spite of Obama's own public statements criticizing Gov. Walker and the evidence that the DNC and Obama's personal campaign action group, Organizing For America, were clearly involved, as the Washington Post itself reported (same article):

What Obie and his Democrat cohorts are counting on is for their media allies not to actively bring up the subject ever again.
