WaPo Op-Ed: Don't Let ROTC On Ivy League Campuses And Oh Yeah...American Soldiers Are The Same As The Taliban

Some guy named Colman McCarthy, who "directs the Center for Teaching Peace in Washington and teaches courses on nonviolence at four area universities and two high schools", crams so much stupid into this 800 word piece it has to be a record.

A taste.

Will the Ivies have the courage for such stands? I'm doubtful. Only one of the eight Ivy League schools - Cornell - offers a degree in peace studies. Their pride in running programs in women's studies, black studies, and gay and lesbian studies is well-founded, but schools have small claims to greatness so long as the study of peace is not equal to the other departments when it comes to size and funding.

At Notre Dame, on that 1989 visit and several following, I learned that the ROTC academics were laughably weak. They were softie courses. The many students I interviewed were candid about their reasons for signing up: free tuition and monthly stipends, plus the guarantee of a job in the military after college. With some exceptions, they were mainly from families that couldn't afford ever-rising college tabs.

In this guy's universe, peace, "women's studies, black studies, and gay and lesbian studies" are important elements of a university's offering but ROTC classes are academically soft.

Okay, let's do a little compare and contrast.

Here's the Army ROTC curriculum at Sienna College, a small Catholic School in upstate NY. ROTC is not something you major in (there are only 8 classes and none are full 3 credit courses). ROTC is an add on to a student's regular course work that is specifically designed to get them ready to enter the Army after graduation. It's not a separate academic discipline, nor does this class list reflect the additional summer and post-graduate training students receive.

Now let's pick a few classes offered in "Women's and Gender Studies" at Columbia that McCarthy seems so fond of.

WMST BC3123y Women and Art 3 pts. Discussion of the methods necessary to analyze visual images of women in their historical, racial, and class contexts, and to understand the status of women as producers, patrons, and audiences of art and architecture.

WMST BC3130y Discourses of Desire: Introduction To Gay and Lesbian Studies 3 pts. Who or what constitutes the subject of gay and lesbian studies? Explores historical, methodological, and epistemological crisis points of essentialism/constructionism; sexuality across cultures; gender versus sexuality; bisexuality and the binary regimes of hetero/homo and male/female; community; identity; the politics of liberation; the place of feminism in les/bi/gay studies.

WMST BC3132x Gendered Controversies: Women's Bodies and Global Conflicts 4 pts. A seminar investigating the significance of social, political, and cultural conflict centered on issues concerning women's lives.

WMST BC3134y Unheard Voices: African Women's Literature 4 pts. Themes include the politics of the canon in Africa, the problems of language, postcolonial counter-discourse, the African-American continuum, and Third World and Western feminism. Readings include novels, short stories, poetry, and drama by Elora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta, Nawal El Saadawi, Miriam Tlali, Bessie Head, Molara Ogundipe-Leslie, Ama Ata Aidoo, and Tess Onwueme.

Let's see...which class do you think has higher standards, one taught by Army officers or the expert in charge of this class?

CSER W3918x Transnational Transgender Social Formations: Political Economies and Health Disparaties 4 pts. This course contextualizes contemporary transgender identities and communities within global social formations. Contemporary transgender social formations in South America, Central America, South Asia, and East Asia will be examined along with indigenous transgender communities in North America and Western Europe. Discussions of transgender social formations will be framed by historical, political, and economic contexts, and how transnational flows of global capital have impacted transgender identities. There will also be comparative analyses between transgender social formations and other sexual mintority communities and between transgender communities from various geographies. Particular attention will also be paid to health disparities among transgender communities, especially in relation to HIV/STI and mental health vulnerabilities. Health disparities will be seen as a manifestation of transgender stigma, social marginalization, and racial stratifications (that often lead to survival sex work) that affect many transgender communities globally. The class will end with an examination of the construction of whiteness and how transgender identities have been normalized as "white" in the West.

The world would do just fine if no one ever studied 'transgender issues". It would be noticeably less well off without the American military and the young men and women who serve in it.

Oh McCarthy doesn't want you to think he doesn't appreciate and admire those who serve in the military, he thinks they are swell...just like those who serve in the Taliban.

To oppose ROTC, as I have since my college days in the 1960s, when my school enticed too many of my classmates into joining, is not to be anti-soldier. I admire those who join armies, whether America's or the Taliban's: for their discipline, for their loyalty to their buddies and to their principles, for their sacrifices to be away from home. In recent years, I've had several Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans in my college classes. If only the peace movement were as populated by people of such resolve and daring.

Maybe this super genius should go to Afghanistan or Pakistan and talk to some members of the Taliban about their views of Women's or Gay and Lesbian Studies (or even just women studying and whether or not gays and Lesbians should be allowed to live). I'm sure he'd come away impressed with their loyalty to their cause, if he came away at all.

Added: I have a somewhat related proposal, expand Junior ROTC programs into more high schools across the country.

I've never served in the military but I did spend three years in my school's Navy Junior ROTC program. That experience gave me an introduction to the military, its history and most importantly, a lifelong appreciation for those who did go on to serve.

It was much more of an old fashioned civics course that had long since gone out of favor by the time I was in HS in the mid 80s.

There will always be idiots like McCarthy but expanding JROTC programs will not only lead to more people opting to serve in the military but it will give far more people at least a cursory introduction and appreciation for the institutions and people that keep this country safe.

So, if you join a "military" out of the desire to behead Jews and homosexuals...that's ok?

I think he's been smacked in the face with reality. I'm sure that there have been vets who have stood up for what they fought for and he was struck by the fact that they did so without being under the Svengali influence of George Hitler Bush. I think he was impressed by the fact that these were people of conviction (albeit wrong) and has been disappointed by students who claimed they were "anti-war" but couldn't be bothered to roll out of bed for a noon "End this War" protest at the Quad. These soldiers were willing tosacrifice and serve and even perhaps die for what they believed in; the peaceniks couldn't be bothered if it interfered with their busy pot smokingschedule or hackey sack tossing.

72 Real old joke, but still appropriate to the subject I think:

Subject: God's Messenger... The Veteran

A college professor, an avowed Atheist, was teaching his class. He shocked several of his students when he flatly stated he was going to prove there was no God.

Addressing the ceiling he shouted: "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform.. I'll give you 15 minutes!"

The lecture room fell silent. You could have heard a pin fall. Ten minutes went by. Again he taunted God, saying, "Here I am, God. I'm still waiting."

His count-down got down to the last couple of minutes when a Marine, just released from active duty and newly registered in the class, walked up to the professor, hit him full force in the face, and sent him tumbling from his lofty platform. The professor was out cold!

At first, the students were shocked and babbled in confusion. The young Marine took a seat in the front row and sat silent. The class fell silent...waiting ....................

Eventually, the professor came to, shaken. He looked at the young Marine in the front row. When the professor regained his senses and could speak he asked: "What's the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The Marine responded: "God was busy. He sent me."

Of course, the people that advocate this bullshit are the same ones that want a Department of Peace, who's charge - I'm sure - would be to undermine any President's war effort by "fact checking" his every public pronouncement on the subject.

88 While a constitutional democratic Republic must have a vigorous debate on many issues for it to remain viable, there are also certain things that need to have their general goodness and desirability ratified by a common consensus if that Republic is to endure. Equality under the law, a government bound by the rule of law, etc.

And, I argue, the need for an American military and the non-evil nature of that military. One can argue about the desired size of the defense budget. But not about the fact that the American military gets a place--and a place of respect--in American society. Mr. McCarthy is trying to change that, for reasons of his own. Of him I will pay no more attention.

The Washington Post is another matter. The Post can hem and haw, and dodge, but by publishing this it says the debate is worth having. And I say it is not. Period. And thus, I want to know the official Post editorial position. Is America's military honorable, or not? Should it be part of American life, at the "highest" levels, or not? Right now, I think they are, at best, ambivalent about such things.

However, they might want to consider this: it is my considered view that if because of the actions of men like Mr. McCarthy, if push comes to shove, and Americans, as a mass, are forced to definitively choose which is to be considered as what is best about America; what is to be honored and held up as what a person of character should strive to be--if the people are forced to choose between the paths to honor shown by the American military, Mr. McCarthy, or the Post itself, then I think they themselves know what the result may be.

Therefore, I kindly suggest to the Post and Mr. McCarthy that they may wish to stop attempts to excommunicate vital elements of American society on the flimsiest of grounds, lest they be excommunicated themselves.

And perhaps that is the optimum outcome, and the one that will result if this kind of effort continues. Mr. McCarthy himself is a small, inconsequential voice who will not be able to achieve his goal (for the country itself will dissolve before his desired state of affairs could ever be possible realized).

And it would seem the Post would seem to be trying to make itself of the same ilk as he--unsound in thought, unrealistic in goal, attacking those who would defend the commonweal, and eventually un-listened to by and large; as it tilts at windmills in efforts to remake the nation in a way that it will not allow itself to be remade.

For years, liberals and colleges (but I repeat) have claimed the only reason they oppose the military is because it did not give equal rights to gays. Now that such will no longer be true, teh left should become staunch supporters of the military, no?

117 Slublog -- you're so right.

I took exactly ONE "Women's Studies" class in college. It was my junior year and I needed a "special topic seminar" for my major (which was English, only slightly more useful than Peace Studies). I found this one class that qualified and it looked pretty interesting. It was called "Narrating Prostitution/Prostituting Narrative," and was a complete and total JOKE. We watched "Pretty Woman," read "Lolita" and "Fanny Hill." The professor lectured us on the "rights" of sex workers. The vast majority of the class consisted of hermaphroditic anomalies, hairy-arm-pitted man-hating womyn, and two types of males: those who wished they were females, and those who were under the delusion that taking a women's studies class would help them get laid.

Looking back I can't beleive I wasted my father's hard-earned money on that 5 credit POS. I did get an A, though, if my memory serves me correctly.

A lieutenant, a major and a colonel were in the bar at the officer's club, having a debate about sex: how much was pleasure and how much was work.

The lieutenant, just back from his honeymoon, said it was 75% pleasure and 25% work.

The major, who was getting up in age, said it was 50-50.

The colonel, who was ready for retirement, said it was 75% work and 25% pleasure.

They couldn't come to an agreement, so they decided to ask go to the barracks and ask the sergeant on duty.

The sergeant told them it was 100% pleasure.

When the three officers asked him why, the sergeant said "Because if there was any work involved, the three of you would have me doing it for you!"

War is not inevitable. Violence is a learned behavior. We have this extraordinary faith in violence, and at the same time this extraordinary skepticism about nonviolence. All I’m trying to do, when I teach peace studies courses in school, is to give people another choice on how to solve their conflicts, whether at home across the living room or across the ocean with another nation. It’s not magic. It’s not foolproof. Violence has failed, but so has nonviolence, so pick which one you want to put your trustin.

I'm not a Fr. Ted fan - for those who don't know he basically declared that Catholic universities were no longer subject to the teaching authority of the Catholic magisterium, and then it was goodbye to Catholic orthodoxy at Notre Dame. But at least he had respect for ROTC. And I can tell you there is nothing weak about the academics in ROTC on campus. I respect those kids way, way more than I do most of the undergrads because they have a life goal other than boozing or whoring. And they don't sign up for pussified majors like "peace studies." I'm fuming, and I hope this assclown gets his worthless tail handed to him by an eloquent, intelligent graduate of ND's ROTC program.

The loudest whiner gets the A.

I could not stand courses like this. Thankfully I had enough credits from high school AP courses I did not have to take a poly sci or sociology course.
Philosophy was unfortunately unavoidable, but I enjoyed arguing with the professor, particularly on the concept of "the long term effects of imperialism".
Every time they would bring up a nation in Africa "ruined" by imperialism and still struggling today, I mentioned Botswana. The class would go apeshit but Prof. Jakoby would be there quietly grinning. There are some liberal professors who love a real argument and will reward you for one...

151 Will the Ivies have the courage for such stands? I'm doubtful. Only one of the eight Ivy League schools - Cornell - offers a degree in peace studies. Their pride in running programs in women's studies, black studies, and gay and lesbian studies is well-founded, but schools have small claims to greatness so long as the study of peace is not equal to the other departments when it comes to size and funding.

There's that word courage again. In a lefty's dim mind not having ROTC and having peace studies class equals courage. Confronting your nation's enemies of course wouldn't be considered courageous in their warped view of everything

159 I've done some recruiting for my agency (a federal law enforcement agency) at area colleges in NJ. At Rutgers Camden a few years ago, out of the hundreds of students who attended the event, about 10% wore suits and had a properly formatted resume. Most were business majors. The rest wore whatever smelled best out of the pile on their floor. The usual greeting was "I'm a (Women's, Urban, African American) Studies major, what can you do for me? After asking them exactly what their major consisted of, I would tell them that they lacked the minimum requirements for our Special Agent positions and sent them over to the FBI table (as a prank).

Contrast that with a recruiting event I attended at Ft. Dix, where the military bearing of the soldiers that attended almost universally translated into a professional demeanor. The troops were either in uniform or business attire. Even when a soldier did not have the minimum education requirements for our positions (they are very specific regarding education) I made an effort to steer them to my colleagues from other agencies where they might be a good fit. The general quality of their education and experience was much better than the Rutgers event.

160 >>> 101 Those Free Tibet bumper stickers have been on cars since the dawn of the combustion engine...

My reaction to those ridiculous stickers is, "Okay -- how?" Because it seems to me that any realistic method of "freeing" the Tibetans would entail some kind of military action. But since lefty pacifist-types find military action all, you know, icky because of all that nasty violence stuff, their solution is to simply resort to cheap sloganeering on the back of their Subaru wagons.

And we can see how effective that's been.

Think of it: go to his house (or loft -- I see him as a loft kinda guy), create some relatively "peaceful" anarchy (nothing worse than letting your toddler pee on his authentic, tribal, hand woven hemp rug and/or rummage through his collection of Southeast Asian art prints)...see how long he remains "peaceful" himself...remind him that his writings have made you "see the light" and now you too are out to profess his wise and wonderful teachings on the wonderments that are anarchy and peace...and would he mind if you looked in his fridge for something to eat? you and your brood are feeling kinda peckish and "share the wealth in love and peace" dontcha know -- the organic hummus and unsalted, whole grain pita chips will be just fine in a pinch.

What is the point of that statement? Just to ensure everyone knows, those folks taking those "weak" ROTC classes to get a as an addendum to their degree curriculum are part of that segment of the population that can't afford college? So of course the Ivy League should certainly make sure those dirty hands are kept away from the respected Ivy League Schools.

Hey F* face! My family couldn't afford an Ivy League school. Guess what I went to the Naval Academy. They didn't offer Peace Studies, Womens Studies, Black Studies, gay lesbian studies. In fact if you majored in humanities you had to minor in a foreign language to graduate.

175 as good friends with a former vice-wing commander of the LSU AFROTC and current wing commander of the same ROTC program as well as taking a few of the Aerospace "classes" I can say it's not some easy peasy program. Hell you have to graduate in 4 years while taking a full courseload on top of taking 2 one hour credit (but 2-3 hour classes) a semester that count for jack for your actual degree it's a bit of hard work. Not to mention most guys in AFROTC are pushing for pilot slots so they major in engineering or similar math based majors and not stupid ass "peace studies"

Posted by: hueydiamondpooty at December 30, 2010 01:12 PM (7VQaN)

176 The key item in the story is the fact that he had protested ROTC "in his college days". What we have here is a 60s era hippie who has turned his college days protesting into a career spanning 30 years. Only in academia is this possible.

Mr. McCarthy resurrects condescending arguments from 40 years ago, and still gets them wrong. Citing an obnoxious insult to the former President of Notre Dame in 1989, twenty years ago, and twenty years after the fact? Really? Is this a satire? And soldiers make decisions about when to go to war or how to prosecute it? We must have missed that class. The best place for the McCarthy's of this world is in the Smithsonian, behind a glass case, that says "liberalus Americanus, circa 1968. Believed nothing was worth defending. Listed as endangered, 1975. Threatened with extinction by election of Ronald Reagan, 1980. Never recovered."

186 176 Sadly, this is very true -- campuses are full of aging hippies and aging hippy wannabes, plus the new crop of hipster hippie like people, who have somehow managed to translate their protesting into nice fat, tenured jobs with speaking engagements that pay them extra (not to mention that they get their thoughts published more readily and they get to hang out on campus and pretend they are 18 yo. hip, cool, beautiful people long past their sell by date).
And that is why I need to find something to protest...I too would like to get a nice, fat tenure track position with extra money for speaking engagements and the ability to get more fat bank from the sale of publications featuring my thoughts and opinion on shit. I'd even be humble and not attempt to walk around campus pretending I'm all ironic and down with it...just the money would be ok by me. Just show me the mother loving money; I'll be happy.
And that is why I need to find something to protest.

189 Right on, F.B. Cornell has their dipsh1t pee studies thing - but they put it in that godawful, mismatched, butt-ugly building with the metal penis-guy statue in front. Rather telling, as is that they have ROTC for every branch, with decent facilities in the fieldhouse, on campus (not across town at MIT, like Harvard). Also there is the Cornell Review, of which the periodic burnings are frankly awesome publicity and make it an institution even the leftards would miss if they ever succeeded in shutting it down. And the engineers and campus police are natural, steadfast allies, among many other "pockets of resistance." And it IS in upstate New York. As they say, Ithaca is twenty square miles surrounded by reality.

The pee studies program wouldn't last long without all those icky conservatives to complain about - which might be why none of the other Ivies have one.
