Jim Moran: My Opponent Hasn't Done Any Public Service, And Has Just Taken A Government Check for 20 Years

By which he means his opponent, Lt. Col. Patrick Murray, was just defending the nation in the military for 20 years, not doing important stuff like sitting in committee and fundraising.

He goes on to equate military service with a form of welfare -- like, hey, how dare this guy take a government check for so long and then want to shrink government spending! What an ingrate!

BTW, I just found the last candidate I'm doing GOTV for, on the last weekend before the election. I'm walking districts for Lt. Col. Murray.

And yeah, I'm still doing phone-banking for Jon Runyan tomorrow at his Toms River HQ, from 3-6 (meet up at 2:45 outside the place), and then dinner/beer after.

Only three or four people are coming so far; sure would be nice to have more!

Related: Union fires stagehand for wearing Bush hat and t-shirt.

The "Bush" in question is the... USS George H.W. Bush, the aircraft carrier, where the guy served.

And this was in anticipation of Obama's visit.

They just don't like the military, do they?

They're gonna like them a lot less in ten days.

13 As a military wife I have heard this argument more than once about *me*- that since I stayed home with kids while my husband served his twenty, including trips to Saudi, the Phillippines, and Korea, including going with him everywhere we could- I was essentially a Welfare recipient and hadn't a leg to stand on when I objected to government providing health care, because after all, I got 'free' health care and it was just silly to say that the health care provided to an active duty military man's family was somehow 'earned'.

Seriously, there are a lot of people who cannot distinguish between military benefits and Welfare. I just didn't know our representatives in Congress were among them.

Funny, because I do not think of myself as naive.

33 @5 - Drawing and quartering actually refers to a couple of different punishments, depending on the society.

WARNING- Don't Read at (or just after) Lunch

IIRC the Mongols used something they called by that name wherein they tied tied your arms and legs to 4 strong horses, and then sent those horses running off in different directions- potentially until your limbs started coming off...

The Medieval European torture/execution of the same name involved hanging one until almost dead, slitting your gut open to let you look at your own insides. Then they'd cut off your limbs (and cauterize the wounds, so you didn't die too quickly) followed by (finally) cutting off your head.

It might be a touch over-the-top for Moran's comments.

The day after the scuffle, during which Alaska Dispatch Editor Tony Hopfinger was handcuffed and detained, the Anchorage Press asked Mindnumbski whether she thinks Republicans “are secretly hoping that you’ll win.”

“Yes. Yes, I do. Definitely,” Muscachollie told the alternative weekly
newspaper. She said she expects a warm welcome from her “colleagues on
both sides of the aisle” if she wins.
“They need my vote,” she said. “And let me tell you, when you win, it’s
a whole different story out there. Because then you’re a player. Right
now I’m a write-in candidate and I’m not my party’s nominee and
[Republican leaders] are looking at the situation and saying, ‘We have

doing it gladly, but that’s what they’re doing.”

65 Moran's thinking (let us be kind and call it that) makes sense if you look upon the government as a sort of organized crime syndicate. Loyalty within such groups is rigidly maintained by the knowledge that everybody within the group is a criminal and equally guilty. Thus no member can speak out against the mob's worst behavior without fear of being taken down for his own crimes.

So, if Moran looks upon himself as a sort of mobster, his statements are completely understandable. He is still contemptible scum but from his perspective everybody remotely tied to the government is the same.

They tied one horse to left arm, one to right arm, one to left leg, one to right leg, sent horse running. Not a pretty sight. A little worse than tar and feathering. Another nifty thing they did was to cut them open and take organs out while they were still alive. Makes death by injection seem not quite so cruel and unusual.

93 I live in Moran's district, there is absolutely no way he loses the election (dead girl, live boy, sheep, frozen money, coke). The district is all government workers. It couldn't be a more Democratic seat if they drew it for Charles Rangel. There is not even a viable Republican party in Arlington County. There are more Green Party candidates for school board and county office in this election than there are Republicans.
If you want to make a difference, help Fimian, next district over (parts) and he has a shot at winning. Moran's brother lost the gubernatorial primary to Craig Deeds. He got tired of waiting for his brother to die so he could take the Congressional seat.
I have met Moran in person, and he is every bit the jerk. he has beaten a kid, taken interest free loans from people with business before his committees and made some of the most anti-semitic comments ever made outside of a Hamas rally.

Bingo. As always I will play the part of douchebag debbie downer, but there's no way in hell Moran loses. I'd bet my house on it. The district was drawn to be uber Dem by the Republican-led legislature in 2001.It includes the most liberal parts of Northern Virginia - all of Arlington County, the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church, and Reston, the most liberal precinct in Fairfax County.

Take a look at McDonnell's numbers last year in the 8th. He didn't win a single precinct in Alexandria, Arlington or Falls Church. I'm not even sure he broke 40% in any Arlington precinct. As a whole, he only won one or two precincts *total* in the 8th and they were all in the Fairfax County part of the district. And remember, this was a 58-41 blow-out victory statewide in which we won Fairfax County and Loudoun.

Sorry, but Moran will be heading back to Capitol Hill until they haul him away on a stretcher or in hand cuffs.

96 My wife had a typical idiot liberal boss make the same comment about her dad's military service including how they got all the perks: housing, tax free shopping, medical care, etc. My wife told her that all those "perks" meant very little when (a) she had trouble keeping friends because she moved four times before seventh grade and (b) her dad was out of the country for weeks at a time and she never knew if she would see him again.

Bolgia 5: Corrupt politicians (barrators) are immersed in a lake of boiling pitch, which represents the sticky fingers and dark secrets of their corrupt deals.[41] The barrators are the political analogue of the simoniacs, and Dante devotes several cantos to them. They are guarded by devils called the Malebranche ("Evil Claws"), who provide some savage and satirical black comedy.

113 *At least Alexandria doesn't have the gangs of Arlington. We also have two republicans on city council. What does arlington have? All green party or all socialist?*

Alexandria's government is tempered by those two councilman and even the D's on the council aren't as big dickheads as in Arlington. But they are already going after Councilwoman Alicia Hughes for a bunch of frivolous ethics violations. She just happens to be a black Republican.

As for Arlington...the whole board is Democrat dominated. We haven't had a seat on the board for any length of time since 1996. The douchiest member is by far Christopher Zimmerman. And he has a douchey mustache to match. Whether it's calling expansions of I-95/395 "racist" or providing the Metro board with a level of oversight a tortoise would be hard-pressed to match, you can count on Chris to turn in his usual awe-inspiring daily performance.

We do have a candidate running against him by the name of Mark Kelly, who actually has outraised him and has more cash on hand. The Sun-Gazette endorsed him (but they endorse Zimmerman's opponent every four years anyway..) and I wouldn't be all that surprised to see the Post endorse Kelly too. But Arlington being Arlington, Zimmerman will likely still win.

115 As a military wife I have heard this argument more than once about *me*- that since I stayed home with kids while my husband served his twenty, including trips to Saudi, the Phillippines, and Korea, including going with him everywhere we could- I was essentially a Welfare recipient and hadn't a leg to stand on when I objected to government providing health care, because after all, I got 'free' health care and it was just silly to say that the health care provided to an active duty military man's family was somehow 'earned'.
Wow. I guess I've lived a very sheltered life as a military wife. I've only heard some bizzare snarking online from one person babbling on about how wrong it was that the military people in her neighborhood had nicer cars than she did. That one I just backed slowly away from...

Posted by: Chris R at October 22, 2010 03:02 PM (AO4qz) Your correct, in this district, the voters are directly or indirectly tied to Government spending. They don't see it as a "bad" thing because in each of their little stovepipes they have a paradigm that they are doing something good - its for the children, the poor seniors, the trees, etc. They get very defensive when people talk about spending cuts, as it is literally their bread and butter, and an indictment of their work - which of course is critical, can't let the snail darter die off. They consider it galling for anyone who has gotten a Federal paycheck, to be talking about spending cuts. Moran is hitting a nerve with his voters. The right, and the rest of the country, may recoil from such talk - but in his district he is pissing fire and getting turnout up.

150 The pentagon built a huge annex just south of seminary road on 395. Moran has held up it's opening because he says there isn't enough parking or green something. Moran however is on the subcommittee for defense appropriations (hence all the beltway bandit money). He didn't know about a 6500 person building going up in his district. Either he's stupid or lying. I'm guessing he's a stupid liar.
The local libs say they can't primary him out because he has so much money on hand. However, if you go to his donations list there isn't all that much money. The rumor is that he has boatloads of saudi money behind him hence his anti-semite, pro muslim stance on every issue. The Saudi Academy is in his district and has just had it's charter renewed by Fairfax Co. Why do I think there is money there? Also, a liberal neighbor of mine who worked at Mt Vernon was around for one of Moran's fundraisers there. He said it was mostly middle eastern men. So when you hear Moran spouting off, protecting CAIR and running down jews know that he is getting paid to do it, if what they say is true.

Having at one time been a resident of Northern Virginia I can tell you with complete confidence that Jim Moran is a crook. And I mean literally, don't believe me, look it up yourself. He was some kind of politician up in Mass and got caught stealing money and working shady deals. He copt to some bullshit like it was accidental but he was basically run out of town. It has been many years since I heard the specifics and I can't recall them all but needless to say Carpetbagger Jim moved his show down south to the People's Republic of Alexandria and resumed his scumbag ways first as the Mayor of Alexandria then to Congress. The Washington Post wrote about Moran's questionable ethics and practices one time, many years ago, but still gave him the journalistic thumbs up. I shouldn't need to tell you that anyone that writes or works for the Washington Post is too busy banging the back of their throat off the knob of the Democrat Party to be able to see straight and give an honest judgment when it comes to literal crooks that happen to be politicians.

“… Already long ago, from when we sold
our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who
once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions - everything,
now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and
circuses.” (Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, describing
the end of the Roman republic in Satire
X, A.D. 200)

159 Sadly, Moran will survive. His district is everything inside the Beltway in Virginia and those people would elect a ham sandwich if had a "D" after it. The only way to send him into retirement is through the Democratic primary, which nearly happened 2 years ago until the front-running challenger's husband developed cancer and she dropped out of the race. No luck this year.
But if you're looking for a competitive race, the Fairfax County race in District 11 is wide open and the 9th in Southwest-By-God-Virginia is going to be close. By all means volunteer and help out any way you can. Especially in Fairfax - Gerry Connally needs to find out what life in the private sector is all about.

162 When Jim Moran said that Lt. Col. Patrick Murray wants to cut Federal spending, the assumption is that Moran wants to increase it. Just what we need in a recession?!?!

We had to defeat King George III's army with minutemen. I guess we will have to do the same with King Obama II's army at the polls. It will only take about one minute to actually vote, so we will need another forming of the minutemen and women.

If Paul Revere were alive today he would be shouting, "The blue coats are coming!
'To the polls, to the polls.'"
