| Carl Paladino: "Nothing To Be Proud of In Being a Dysfunctional Homosexual"Pretty short for a concession speech, really. Well at least we'll have a test-case for how unapologetic red-meat social conservatism plays in the blue states. This is a guy, meanwhile, who had a child out of wedlock while married to his wife, so you would expect him to have more of a hate-the-sin-love-the-sinner approach to deviations from the sexual ideal. But, again, it's easiest to knock those sins you yourself are incapable of. Bad Timing, Too: NYC arraigns 8 gang-bangers (in the Latin King Goonies -- yeah, the Goonies) in anti-gay torture case.Comments1

Well red-meat social conservatism won't play in NY but I'm not even sure that's what Paladino is. He's more or less just a big mouthed asshole. Usually, that does play well in NY but generally not when running for Governor. Posted by: DrewM. at October 10, 2010 06:01 PM (HicGG) 5

Andrew Cuomo has to be one lucky SOB.
First, Spitzer and Patterson implode in the space of 3 years. Then Rudy doesn't get in the race. Well at least we'll have a test-case for how unapologetic red-meat social conservatism plays in the blue states.
Someone please throw a dart at a map of New York, get a phonebook of whatever city you hit, drop it square on the floor, jab your finger somewhere on the page, and call that person and ask whether they're R or D. If R, draft them immediately for NY governor. If D, repeat this process until an R is reached. This could be a test-case for how random candidate-hunting plays in blue states. I wouldn't mind trying it in California. Posted by: arhooley at October 10, 2010 06:15 PM (QGlfl) 36
Ombudsman-
what I find interesting is that while the pro gay marriage/rights/etc. issues have seen a bounce towards them, pro life has also seen a bounce towards it's side, it's interesting to see one conservative social issue they could rely on the country agreeing with them with getting away from them and another that the country disagreed w/ them on suddenly a popular thing Posted by: YRM (The Youngest Ace Commenter-Mad At The Rays For Playing With His Emotions) at October 10, 2010 06:17 PM (xQuuU) 37
I like finding these old gems. “I believe that the transaction tax still has a great deal of merit. The concern that many of us or others have had is that it will send, it will send transactions overseas. Well, let's see, the fact is, what we are talking about is a global transaction [tax], something that we would do in conjunction with other G nations, whether it is G8, G20, whatever the current G number is. Because it is really a source of revenue that has really minimal impact on the transaction, but a tremendous impact on helping us meet our needs.” Nancy Pelosi, tax policy genius December, 2009 Posted by: Soothsayer at October 10, 2010 06:17 PM (AvO0L) 38

The fact the Cuomo is even a viable candidate after all the shit he's caused is disgusting enough. Talk about total failure of the press. I personally think he's nervous. He's running alot of ads for a shoe-in. All Paladino has to do is show how Andy was directly involved in the real estate melt-down and how that ruined NY's economy in 30 seconds on TV and he has a chance. Carl Paladino may insult some with his less than politically correct comment, but at last count, he never drove an Oldsmobile off a bridge resulting in the death of a young woman, or testified before Congress about war crimes that didn't happen, or sandwiched a waitress, or wore a white sheet, or lied to a Federal Magistrate, or stood before Congress at the State of the Union and lied like Obama. Paladino isn't the perfect candidate, but in perspective he might be an ass-kicking guy that could get something done in New York where insolence, condescension, and arrogance are a way of life. Yes, this will kill him in The City. But hell he had no chance in the city anyway. Now he can probably write off the 10% of the votes from the city that he would have got. Well, Paladino has about 20 days to turn this into a referendum on gay marriage. It could work. Most polls show that while the population is in favour of civil partnerships recognized they are not in favour of a redefinition of marriage to include same same sex couples. If you look at Prop 8 in California (which is arguably the most liberal state in the union) the black population voted for Obama almost to a man but also for Prop 8 by a pretty significant number.
Hammer on Cuomo's position on gay marriage as primary and the economy as secondary. What the heck, it's worth a shot. On the issue of the Latin-King-Goonies whatever the hell they are called, it may not be gay bashing. While I have not doubt these morons dislike gays they may have beaten the crap out of these people because the wannabe gay banger lied to them while/during his initiation into the gang. That may have been a bigger sin to these lowlifes then being gay. Posted by: scr_north at October 10, 2010 06:49 PM (LsZes) 81

will use stuff like this to tar Republicans running around the country. "Why haven't you repudiated..." etc. Posted by: Serious Cat at October 10, 2010 06:47 PM (bAySe) They might try it, but whereas us mentioning Obama's mosque comments caused Dems a lot of problems in that they'd have to criticize Obama, nobody on our side will be afraid of criticizing Paladino. Even if you have a religious objection to homosexuality, he tossed enough out there that you shouldn't have a problem repudiating him. Posted by: AD at October 10, 2010 06:53 PM (XlKZs) 88
Funny there was no moderate outrage when Obama didn't vote for the born alive infant protection act or when he said he didn't want his daughters punished with a baby. Both of these statements are equally as repulsive as Paladino's yet they are blown by like an ad for vaseline. I know that the right doesn't want to absorb our loons, but why can the left not only absorb theirs so easily but also promote them to the top of their party? Is the difference the media, or is the entire left so bankrupt that regardless of the statement, they are unshockable?

If NY voters think the only choices are far left and left, they are going to be shocked when they hear other candidates discuss openly conservative views. By pumping the prime like this though it becomes much harder for the left to knock mainstream right and right of center talking points. So, I'd argue if he calculates he has no chance, and he probably doesn't, stake out a very conservative stance on every issue, so other candidates this year and in 2012 have a better chance... He isn't what he seems he gave money and support to the previously elected hooker banging/hooker choking governor and went squishy on on abortion a few days after the primary win. He loves NY except for the people who live in Manhattan, the gays, immigrants and the "others". There are 2 million more registered Democrats in NY State than all the other parties combined. The last 2 Republicans elected governor were liberals (Pataki and Rockefeller). He may win his upstate NY base but Cuomo is going to bury him in NYC and Long Island and he will probably lose by 25 points. I'm basically a live-and-let live person, whatever someone does behind closed doors, within reason, should be no one's business. So if you want to call me a "homophobe", go right ahead. But I think that all this talk of inevitable support for gay marriage is greatly exaggerated. While the younger generation may be more publicly tolerant of gays, in private, the gay-bashing is the same as it ever was. The word "gay" is still used as an insult, freely. Add in the fact that gays are not looked upon too favorably among the "immigrants" and other racial minorites, and as we all know, they are the demographic that is growing the fastest.

Even if he said it, he's said worse. This guy is scum every way you look at it. Jim Molinaro and Joanie Mahoney endorsed Cuomo; many Republicans in NY have serious reservations about Paladino. He might even lose Buffalo.

I'll tolerate homos, just as soon as they tolerate my intolerance for them.
Posted by: George Steinbrenner at October 10, 2010 10:02 PM (HCBn3) 162
I have no interest in getting in a debate over the how natural homosexuality is or how it should be treated on a personal level. I likely disagree with a lot of conservatives here on that issue (that still doesn't mean I want the courts deciding gay marriage) but the point here is that such a statement, framed in such a vitriolic sounding way is a dead end in a state like new york. It'll play well upstate and in western NY? Great. As a NY'er I can tell you that'll win you 40% of the vote. Enjoy losing by 20 pts.
And for the person pointing out that this wasn't even included in a speech, at some point you just have to accept the fact the media are hack leftist shills whose ranks are filled by tpm and ex college socialist club members and that there is a double standard. A guy puts on a nazi costume once as part of a series of historical re-creation events and he's villified while a dem running for senator can write fiction containing pedophilia and its smirked at. Grow to accept the fact that the media has a titled playing field and start running uphill. Posted by: inyourheadZOMBIE at October 10, 2010 10:06 PM (RC7LR) 163
That's the point, Zombie....did he actually have a chance in the NYC area, anyway? And does everyone in that area have a soft spot for gays? I know a few guys from Brooklyn who tell me different.

Before he got foot in his mouth disease the polls had him close. Even if he'd just kept it to high single digits, low teens that would have given DioGuardi a puncher's chance in this environment and would have put Cuomo in the position where he might make a mistake/gaffe. Instead he's detracting from the fact that AC actually has a pretty shitty record. Posted by: inyourheadZOMBIE at October 10, 2010 10:40 PM (RC7LR) 167
Molinaro isn't well thought of lately. Who the heck is Joanie Mahoney?
Thank God New Yorkers make their own voting decisions and don't take the word of some other professional politician telling them for whom to vote. Posted by: curious at October 10, 2010 10:58 PM (p302b) 168

NYPIRG examined the campaign contributions of Cumo and Palladino over a ten year period. Palladino gave more to Republicans. Cumo comes off looking like a cheapskate.
I wonder if they give to charity in the same percentages. Posted by: curious at October 10, 2010 11:22 PM (p302b) 170
STATEMENT OF CARL PALADINO
CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK (NEW YORK, NY) - In reaction to inaccurate media reports of his comments to Orthodox Jewish leaders today in Brooklyn, New York, Carl Paladino issued the following statement: "In my speech today to Orthodox Jewish leaders in New York City, I noted my opposition to gay marriage, inspired by my Catholic beliefs. I also oppose discrimination of any form. I did not say this phrase, as was inaccurately attributed to me by some media outlets: "There is nothing to be proud of in being a dysfunctional homosexual. That is not how God created us." I do not agree with this passage, nor did I say it. Apparently a few reporters relied upon suggested remarks distributed by my hosts at the synagogue in Williamsburg after my departure, not the actual statement I made. My campaign staff has worked with the inaccurate outlets and most corrected their stories after viewing video of the event. I unequivocally have no other reservations about homosexuality. I enjoy a close relationship with my nephew who is gay and I certainly consider him to be a functional child of God." Posted by: CO to FLO at October 11, 2010 01:45 AM (Aauti) 171
"PALADINO LAUDS CUOMO ON HEVESI"
lots of interesting stuff in there and it could be missed if people concentrate on a created firestorm. Listening to Red Eye Radio with Doug McIntyre. He received a call from someone who appeared to have either an Indian or Pakistani accent. The man was genuinely upset. He had been to a palladino rally today and he was calling to say that he did not think the man he saw at the rally would say what is being attributed to him. He was so genuine and honest I knew he had to be believed and then, I came to this thread and the statement was posted and the man was right. So what about this from the link above? What does this prove? And can we expect a retratction from Ace on the Paladino 'story'?
The back-and-forth between the two campaigns took a strange turn late on Sunday, when Mr. Caputo suggested that, on Aug. 20, a Cuomo staff member had referred to two gay male aides to Mr. Paladino as “girls.” The aides were accompanying a Paladino volunteer dressed in a duck costume, and blowing duck calls, to call attention to what the Paladino campaign said was Mr. Cuomo’s habit of ducking issues.According to Mr. Caputo, the aides were approached by the Cuomo staff member and told: “If you girls don’t get out of here, I’m going to shove those duck calls down your throats.”Mr. Caputo said the encounter was “likely a hate crime since the Cuomo staffer clearly referenced their sexuality in his threat.” The Cuomo campaign did not respond late Sunday. ...the Cuomo staff member and told: “If you girls don’t get out of here, I’m going to shove those duck calls down your throats.”
Mr. Caputo said the encounter was “likely a hate crime since the Cuomo staffer clearly referenced their sexuality in his threat.” Perhaps Mr Cuomo was being influenced by his Catholic beliefs against duck/people relations. Posted by: BTDT at October 11, 2010 11:28 AM (Ysgkb) 177

This is a guy, meanwhile, who had a child out of wedlock while married to his wife, so you would expect him to have more of a hate-the-sin-love-the-sinner approach to deviations from the sexual ideal. But, again, it's easiest to knock those sins you yourself are incapable of.
Nice passive aggressive version of exactly what you're accusing him of. I imagine if you asked him about that incident he'd say that's nothing to be proud of either, eh? If something's wrong or bad it doesn't stop being that because you've done a different bad thing some time in your life. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at October 11, 2010 01:37 PM (61b7k) 181
Concession speech?

Paladino was talking to a group of Hasids. What did youthink he was going to tell them? That Leviticus is bunk in today's modern world?
Seriously, Ace, you have to get out of New York City once inna while. EXACTLY. Stop going wobbly, or should I say limp-wristed, guys. Go Carl Paladino, Go! Posted by: Curmudgeon at October 11, 2010 02:54 PM (ujg0T) 183
