| Gallup: A Clear Majority of Likely Voters Self-Identify As Conservative54%. And 27% moderate, 18% liberal. There are several caveats here. "Moderates?" Often are not. They tend to be liberal-ish people who "don't like labels" or who have internalized the idea that liberalism is bad, even as they continue to believe in it. (They just don't call it "liberalism" -- they call it common-sense centrism.) Even "Conservatives," as in "conservative Democrat," are actually more liberal than a "liberal Republican." Plus, even at 54%, bear in mind we're going to have a lot of conservatives voting big in some areas, but you can only win the same district once. That is, if we win huge in TX-5 (or wherever) that doesn't help us in MA-6, where it's going to be a lot dicier. And these numbers may actually cast doubt on that last poll. Remember their eyepopping poll showing Republicans with +13 or even +18 advantage based on likely turnout models? Well this I'm pretty sure is the cross-tab report to that, so if that first poll was too good for us, these numbers are similarly too good for us. There are going to be good polls and bad polls; you're never as good as you look like when you're winning and you're never as bad as you look like when you're losing. Room for optimism, but as Winston Wolf's maternal grandfather, corn farmer Walter Wolf, sagely observed: Gentlemen, let's not start shucking eachother's cobs just yet.Comments1

What about the moderates who don't like to call themselves Conservatives since that term has been made toxic by the left, even though they side with Conservatives on most every issue?
It may be a smaller portion than those who are moderate-meaning-left, but that would easily make the 54% go to what..over 60%? I've got a friend who is a registered Democrat and considers himself liberal, but if you listen to what he believes, he is not a liberal. Posted by: wiserbud at October 08, 2010 05:56 PM (EW49d) 8

Don't they do polls where, instead of asking peeps to self-identify, they ask a series of questions on policy/values that determine their true orientation? I.E. Capitalism... for or against?
I'd like to see Gallup poll that along with the cross-tabs of the self-id question. Posted by: Serious Cat at October 08, 2010 05:57 PM (bAySe) 11
I'm pretty sure anyone who tells Gallup that they're conservative knows at least that it's the opposite of what the Dems are. And that concentration effect goes both ways. Pelosi's extra 30% (or whatever) isn't going to help Frank or Dingle.

54%. And 27% moderate, 18% liberal.
Well, you can't count all 27% of moderates as left leaning. Yes, liberals like to lie and claim to be moderates, but I'd say this shows a DRAMATIC shift to the right. I think the State Media fooled a lot of mushy middle types into believing that Bush was some paradigm of conservatism. When they now see the change that Obama was offering is taking the bad stuff Bush did and cranking it to 11, while, they tend to see the lie they were told in stark terms... Could you imagine if Obama was a mechanic you took your car to fix a problem that arose? He would continue to bill you for labour and parts to the tune of thousands of dollars and all the while your car would still not be fixed. When you spoke to him about his lack of success in actually solving your mechanical issues, his reply would be: “Hey, it’s not my fault. The car wasn’t working before you ever brought it to me.” Posted by: kbdabear at October 08, 2010 06:11 PM (vdfwz) 47

Michael Grunwald, Super Genius;
In Time Mag on Oct 1 It's Official: The Stimulus Isn't a Waste of Money People of good faith can disagree over whether President Obama's $787 billion stimulus package is creating enough jobs, piling on too much debt or helping the country in the long run. But it's about time to retire one set of critiques of the stimulus: that it would be riddled with fraud, hamstrung by delays and crippled by cost overruns. So far, while the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is clearly not a political success, it is just as clearly a managerial success — on schedule, under budget and, according to independent investigators, remarkably free of fraud. Of course, the thousands of dead people REALLY put that money to good use 72,000 stimulus payments went to dead people WASHINGTON (AP) - More than 89,000 stimulus payments of $250 each went to people who were either dead or in prison, a government investigator says in a new report. The payments, which were part of last year's massive economic recovery package, were meant to increase consumer spending to help stimulate the economy. But about $18 million went to nearly 72,000 people who were dead, according to the report by the Social Security Administration's inspector general. The report estimates that a little more than half of those payments were returned. Posted by: kbdabear at October 08, 2010 06:12 PM (vdfwz) 49

I'd say this is less of an issue. Liberals tend to congregate together into hard left districts, whereas conservatives are more evenly distributed. Look at the big cities like NYC and LA, and/or the special minority set aside districts. We are going to lose plenty of races in those area by 50+ points even with the Republican wave. Those are votes the left would rather have in say previously purple NH1 or NY23... Posted by: 18-1 at October 08, 2010 06:14 PM (7BU4a) 55

"Moderates?" Often are not. They tend to be liberal-ish people who "don't like labels" or who have internalized the idea that liberalism is bad, even as they continue to believe in it. "
I don't think this often applies. At one time, back when I was young and stupid, I identified myself as a moderate. The fact is, when you are faced with REAL people who hate America, or REAL people who scam welfare, because they are too lazy to support themselves, you don't like liberalism at all. I believe that many moderates are people who haven't yet faced up to reality, and who still trust what the liberal media pushes. Truth is, many moderates believe in personal responsibility and love their country, believe that businesses must make a profit to survive, the profit motive causes people to start businesses, and want their military to protect them from terrorists. It's about time to dump the conservative/liberal terminology dynamic. It seems entirely too muddled. How about replacing it with small government/big government? Isn't that a more descriptive, simpler, and uniquely binary choice? For example I'd place Huckabee on the big government (BG) side of the ledger despite his "conservative" credentials. Bloomberg? He's about as nanny-statist as they come. Nor can I think of a single "Blue Dog" Democrat I'd move into the conservative camp.
Under such new nomenclature the disparity isn't nearly as wide as 54/27/18, and I think it would more closely represent America in action as opposed to word. IOW, many Moderates would fit better as Liberals and even some Conservatives would get chipped off. For all the talk, I don't believe the ratio of conservative:liberal is 2:1, much less 3:1. "Conservative" sounds nice since "liberal" has become rhetorical poison due to socialists in their midst; but when people act according to a defined "small government" parameter, they're really not quite so conservative after all. Of course, we'll get a good test now to see just how "conservative" we've become. I have more hope that SG gets a surge, but I'll believe it when I see it. I think Breitbart is a huge boon to honest journalism and rational conservatism. The problem is that he does too.
He tries to do too much, and he's really best when he's engaged with a single issue/target. Once he begins mixing in with all the other tease-and-post-and-tease bloggers he loses (oh dread) his gravitas. He's great, but he's got to start over-delivering instead of over-promising. Microsoft Flash would be awesome. It's called "Silverlight", and it really isn't.
Silverlight is a hell of a lot better than Flash, imo.Far more versatile. Also, ironically,it's more cross-platform than Flash is. Andfar less of a security risk.Still I think Silverlight isredundant. Flash is clearly the standard and I don't see how SL will displace it.ButFlashwould be an excellent asset for Microsoft, as would many of Adobe's products, save that evil Reader POS. I wonder - are these related (both from breaking news in Connecticut at this hour)?
1) BRANFORD — A tractor-trailer truck state police have been looking for Friday was found at about 6 p.m. at the TA truck stop off I-95 in Branford.Troopers approached the vehicle and took the driver and a passenger into custody at gunpoint, then checked the truck for hazards. The state police bomb squad is en route to the rest stop to further examine the truck. 2) DANBURY — — A state police officer shot and killed a motorist after a routine traffic stop turned deadly early Friday evening on I-84 near Danbury. State police said that a trooper pulled over a stolen car with three people inside at about 6:21 p.m. The driver opened fire on the officer, who returned fire and shot the motorist multiple times. The trooper was uninjured. The two passengers ran. It is not known if they were captured. I-84 was closed in both directions Friday night. Posted by: stuiec at October 08, 2010 08:10 PM (7AOgy) 221

This is in regards to the Colorado Governor's race. I know Maes is a horseshit candidate and a lot of people here might be inclined to support Tancredo but it's absolutely critical that Maes gets at least 10%. Please consider the following:
Imagine the 2012 Colorado ballot for president: Barack Obama is at the top and Mama Grizzly or Mitt Romney is buried down there with the Ralph Nader types. That’s the scenario Dave Kerber, the chairman of the Arapahoe County Republican Party, spells out in the most complete memo to date about what what happen if GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes fails to capture 10 percent of the vote in November. Some of the impacts already have been discussed, including fund raising and ballot position, but Kerber pointed out Republicans would be reduced to minor-party status is both 2012 and 2014.Maes has been struggling since former GOP Congressman Tom Tancredo joined the race on the American Constitution Party ticket, arguing that Maes can’t beat Democrat John Hickenlooper. Here’s Kerber’s memo:MINOR PARTY STATUS “First the determination of whether the Republicans would be a minor party is if the a party’s candidate for Governor receives less than 10% of the vote. Should Dan Maes receive less than 10% of the vote, all Republican candidates for the next two election cycles 2012 and 2014 will have minor party status.” BALLOT PLACEMENT “The current rule is that the major parties (currently Republican and Democrat) have a lottery to determine which candidate will be first and second for all races. Then the minor parties have a lottery to determine their respective order beneath the major party candidates. Finally independents appearing on the ballot through petition will have a lottery to determine their ballot placement below the major parties and minor parties. “The effect of the designation of minor party status for the 2012 election would be that our candidate for president will not be in the top two lines which will be reserved for the Democrat and American Constitution Party candidates. We will be left to compete for ballot position with the Greens, Socialists, American Communist Party, Libertarians. Prohibitionists etc. “Our state house and senate candidates will similarly be relegated to bottom positions. In 2014, when we have our US Senate, Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer etc races, again, we will be at the bottom of the ballot fighting the libertarians etc for ballot placement. As we all know, being at the top or toward the top can mean several percentage points in the vote, enough in a close race to secure victory.” FUND RAISING: “Being a minor party can cut the ability of our candidates to raise money. Under Colorado law if a minor party candidate is designated by the party’s assembly for the ballot, that candidate will automatically be designated for the general election ballot without the need of a primary. “The purpose of this was to save County Clerks from having to print up and distribute minor party primary ballots where there are so few voters and a primary would be meaningless. The major parties on the other hand are on all primary ballots even without competition. As a minor party, all of our candidates who would not face a primary challenge would automatically be designated for the general election ballot. “The problem arises in that campaign finance rules allow for a State House candidate, for example, to raise $200 in the primary election and $200 in the general election. As a major party and therefore a primary, all our Republican house candidates can raise $400/ donor. As a minor party, that candidate would only be able to raise $200/donor for the general election only. “The Democrats, as a major party, would continue to raise $400/donor. This would put our candidates at a great disadvantage through two election cycles.”Kerber pointed out the finance rules does not apply to federal candidates for Congress. He appealed to Republicans to consider the consequences of shunning Maes.“We need to take a longer view and not damage our good Republican candidates in the 2012 and 2014 election cycles by dropping into minority party status,” Kerber wrote. “It would truly be an embarrassment to our party and in a close election potentially damaging to the country to have voters have to search (the ballot) for our 2012 presidential candidate.” Posted by: ol_dirty_/b/tard at October 08, 2010 08:26 PM (X7WMk) 248

I guess the CT Morons are rowdier than we give them credit for. Which one of you is Goldberg?
FARMINGTION — A local man who police say was caught peering into a neighbor's window and masturbating while she was getting dressed turned himself in Tuesday.Neil Goldberg, 52, was arrested on a warrant charging him with public indecency, simple trespass, disorderly conduct and breach of peace, police said. He lives in the complex where the incident happened, they said. The incident that led to the charges happened last month in the complex where he lives, Lt. Marshall Porter said Wednesday. A woman walking her dog told police she saw a man standing on a stool and masturbating while peering in a window, Porter said. My "moderate" sister was just here. (In this case moderate means "I haven't got a fucking clue and vote whatever seems cool or not extreme at the moment or how my husband tells me to) She told my husband that "I guess people feel about Obama now how the left felt about George Bush." Very measured, my hubby responds, "yes, but then we had an average 5.2% unemployment rate then, so you know that stuff with Bush was all media driven." She just tilted her head.

The unfortunate problem is that, when polled, dead people, pets, illegal immigrants and incarcerated prisoners split 1%-3%-96% on the conservative-moderate-liberal vote. In many districts currently controlled by liberals we would have to win by 5% just to break even, and we're not going to win by that much in most liberal districts. If we do get control, first item on the agenda should be new anti-voter fraud laws and the enforcement thereof prior to the next election. (not to mention the enforcement of existing laws)
