Katy Perry To Her Tweener Girl Customers: Have Sex, It's So Awesome!!!

Here's Katy Perry on Saturday Night Live.

If you don't want to watch, the basics of the lyrics is that she's super-hot to have sex with a guy she loves, and thus proposes:

Let's go all the way tonight
no regrets, just love
We can dance until we die
you and I will be young forever

You make me feel like
I'm livin' a
Teenage Dream
the way you turn me on
I can't sleep
Let's run away and
never look back, never look back

Later on she talks about how awesome it is to be felt up through her "skin-tight jeans."

She is plainly attempting to mimic the basics of Like a Virgin here, lyrically. Like a Virgin was also a metaphor -- kinda -- about very young people having sex and how awesome it is. I say metaphor, because Madonna said "like a virgin;" that is, she wasn't actually saying she was a virgin, but was so hot for this guy she felt like one.

Similarly, Katy Perry isn't saying she is a Teenage Dream, but she feels like one, because she's so horned-up and stuff.

But I do not think her legions of tweener girl fans are going to get this very thin distinction (and Katy Perry doesn't really mean them to). They are not going to take from it that this is an adult woman saying she feels so hot 'n horny she feels like a Teenage Dream, but is in fact not a Teenage Dream at all; they are going to make this their anthem, and become someone's Teenage Dream.

And she's telling them how awesome that is. And how teenage sex is just so awesome that even when adults want to discuss awesome sex, they talk about it terms of teenage sex, the most awesomest awesome sex of all.

And yeah, for that reason, the song will sell well, and it will be proposed as theme for junior proms across the country (and will mostly be rejected by faculty... mostly).

None of this was necessary, of course, even if her motive was money. As an attractive woman with some ability to write catchy bubblegum pop, her career is failry secure. It's not like she was a Britney Spears desperately needing a comeback hit and thus resorting to the tried and true method of selling sex to younger and younger tweener girls.

This was just evil for evil's sake. She wanted to be even more famous than she is (and she is already quite a bit more famous than her present, but very limited, talents would recommend), and she decided to grab at that on the backs of tweener girls, already immersed in a culture that tells them virgins are weird and having sex is what the cool, popular kids do, with almost no pushback against this message at all.

What is our goal here? What's the current average age for girls losing their virginity? I'm gonna guess -- 15 and three months? Is the goal to push it down to 14 and 11 months? I think that is the goal, and I think Katy Perry can be very proud of herself for having that kind of an impact, pushing this age down by another four months.

It's in this context that I would advise all those people who think Christine O'Donnell is "weird" and "judgmental" and "too religious" for expressing her take-it-slow views on sexuality. Young girls -- really young; tweens -- are being sold this crap day and night by an insidious, viciously cynical pop culture that says it's never too young to be someone's Teenage Dream.

Is it so awful that some people want to push back on this and try with what tools they can to raise the average age of first sex up to the "prudish, judgmental, no-fun" range of 16 and 1 month?

The Defense... always offered is the claim that these songs are for adults, and so you can't tell adults what they can or can't listen to.

Um, they're not for adults. This genre is called bubblegum pop, not "steak and potato pop." It is designed specifically to appeal to the immature, naive musical tastes of children, a snappy sing-a-long sort of style that isn't terribly different than jingles for breakfast cereals.

I'm not buying Katy Perry's albums, and she knows it. 12 year old girls are. So spare me this "mature song about sexuality" bullshit.

In addition, she sure seems to know who her target demographic is, doesn't she? This ad runs constantly on MTV shows like The Hills:

Oh, right. She's appealing to all those adult listeners who 1, know who she is, 2, enjoy bouncy Alvin and the Chipmunks bubblegum pop, 3, watch The Hills on MTV, and 4, have acne problems.

Yeah, all those adults.

Katy Perry is the sort of woman that many girls dream of being. She's hot, obviously can have any man she wants, is (sorta) talented, and living every girl's dream life.

They'd like to be her. But not every girl can grow gigantic funbags or a perfect bubble-butt. Not every girl can learn to play guitar enough to fake it on stage. Not every girl can land a million-dollar record deal and put out a string of catchy conspicuously-commercial jingles.

No, girls can't do that. But they can easily emulate Katy Perry in one way. Every little girl could be someone's Teeange Dream tonight, couldn't she?

Again, this is just evil. And as "weird" as Christine O'Donnell's campaign to encourage girls to keep in in their pants might be -- what's weirder? Being so "judgmental" as to be against this, or being indifferent to sexualizing young tweener girls?

Aimee Mann can write "mature songs about sexuality" because she actually writes songs for adults. Katy Perry writes songs for children. How about maybe making them age-appropriate for your intended victim demographic?

Mommy, Why Does Elmo Have a Cleave In The Middle Of His Head? Spoofing herself here, showing off her moneymakers.

Are You Quite Sure You Are Writing Songs For Adults? Again, she sure seems to know her audience is considerably younger than 18. Her big score of a film role? The voice of Smurfette in the upcoming The Smurfs cartoon-movie.

Hey - California's age of consent is 18.
Of course, it only really applies if one partner is over 18 already. They don't much go after under-18s having sex with each other.

29 14 - Lingerie commercials on TV. Really.

What no one wants to admit is that sex was a "taboo subject" not because it was "dirty" or "gross" but because it's quite attractive on its own without any help, thankyouverymuch.

As Anya once said on Buffy: The Vampire Slayer: "What's the point of having these interlocking bodies if we don't, you know, interlock?"

People (even teens and pre-teens) figured it out all on their own without any help for a long time. All "talking" about it does is anesthetize people to it- which, by extension, anesthetizes them to its negative effects. I could go all conspiracy-y here and say "it's part of the attempt to destroy the family," but I really think it's just dumb people who never gave themselves a chance to see how REALLY awesome sex could be by waiting and then being completely monogamous.

So I have no problem with objectifying her and agreeing with someone up the thread that her music does suck, but wow, those tits are great. I wonder if Perry really understands that the vast majority of the men and boys who look at her couldn't give a rat's ass for her thoughts and ideas and opinions and personality; all they want to do is look at her tits, and if they have enough money, try to bang her at a cast party.

38 Yeah, and as the mother of teenage boys, the boy STILL doesn't think well of the girl who puts out, regardless of what the "culture" tries to tell you.
Girls are so much worse off now. They are expected by the media, the government, their friends and in some cases their parents to be "sexual" and not only have the normal reasons not to go all the way but also have the threat of diseases. Yet, the boys have the same attitude they did in 1890 which is sure, I'll take it but don't think I won't hold it against you and so will every other guy.

We have not been well-served by the race to hypersexualize every aspect of society. Like reading and writing, thinking and analyzing, leading and self-control.

The more I learn of public schools today, I'm inching closer and closer to the notion that it is child abuse to send your kid to one.

67 Being someone who has never understood hysteria over sex, I tend to take a pretty indifferent attitude towards what people do, and at what age they do it. I don't want to see people do stupid things, but I don't get emotional about it. I don't have pavlovian anxieties about programmed into me.

But even so, I do recognize that encouraging 8th graders to start humping like weasels is not in their best interest. That is just as damaging as efforts to hide sex away from them like it is a dirty secret.

Why do leftists think that the best way to ensure sexual freedom is to encourage people to engage in sex that is risky and self destructive?

That would be like the NRA promoting the second amendment by encouraging people to start shooting at everything.

But then maybe that is the idea, encourage people to damage themselves and the world around them in preparation for their promised Marxist revolution. An intact society comprised of individuals who are emotionally and spiritually whole isn't vulnerable to Marxism or any other evil ideology. Only devastated cultures comprised of spiritually diseased people will fall prey to that kind of evil.

76 They are the same sweater puppies. Have you guys seen actual girls with actual tits in actual wonder bras. These babies can make (and have made) even Keira Knightly look like she has a decent B-cup. Here's how it works for you guys unable to get ahold of a real woman with a modern bra: everything is pushed into the middle and then filled in with foam at the sides. Push-up bras. Learn about them morons if you want us to believe you've had contact with breasts (real or fake).

When my kid was in third grade, third grade, little girls, at the urging of their air-headed moms, were calling and inviting him on movie dates.

Well, for these girls, they don't think about sex itself, but they are just imitating activity they see around them. For girls that age, boys are possessions. They want to "have" a boyfriend. Having a boyfriend gives them status.

They do want to grow up, but only because they want to be grown-up. Makeup and jewelry is the same thing.

If you are sneaking around behind your family's back, at the age of 14 or so, humping like weasels, you might also be drinking, getting a roofie slipped in your drink, smoking various smokes, and generally putting a wedge between you and your family. These are the kinds of things that sow chaos in families.

The bigger point, that has already been made is that parents need to be proactive in what they're kids are doing.

One doesn't need religious convictions to know there's always consequences for having sex, even if there is no disease transmission or an unexpected pregnancy. For those stigmas to work, one must buy into the judgmental God.. standing before St Peter going through every fun thing you ever did (oops, I mean every "sinful" thing).. Sorry.. those days are long gone. You will get less and less yoots to buy into it.. especially when you include compulsory beliefs in myths about Genesis, etc., as some sects do.

Um, seriously Katy? Guess she forgot that a stiff prick has NO conscience. Between "Teenage Dream" and Katy's "California Girls" and Snoop Dog's rapping in it about "all that ass hanging out," Hollywood can go fuck themselves. And throw in the Jersey Shore trash (and I'm from Jersey) young girls barely stand a chance anymore.
The antidote for Katy Perry, et al: parents and self respect. And I mean parents--not just the grown-ups who live in the same house--but those who actually take an interest and rear their children and teach them right from wrong, self respect, confidence, and so much more.

Posted by: Cindy in San Diego at September 27, 2010 02:24 PM (rSt95)

177 For those stigmas to work, one must buy into the judgmental God.
Well...God is judgemental. That's His basic job description, in fact. If you don't like being judged, then religious faith probably isn't for you. (And I use "you" in the general, not specific, sense here.)
Shame has a valuable role in advancing civilization. Shame indicates a strong moral component in a society. ("I'm not ashamed of what I am!", I hear all the time. "That's the problem," I respond. "You should be.")
Sexual mores change all the time. It's a pendulum, and it tends to swing back towards chastity and fidelity when the social costs of promiscuity become too great to bear. Paternity of children, sexual jealousy, and the institution of marriage all factor into it. If you accept the axiom that the family is the core building block of civilization (as I do); and that the family unit is composed of man, wife, and children (as I do); then it leads you inexorably to the conclusion that any social change that damages that basic building block is necessarily injurious to the cause of civilization as a whole.
Women suffer more than men from sexual promiscuity, fair or not. That's what's so socially perverse about promoting "sexual freedom" among young girls: it's basically telling them to do the worst possible thing for themselves. And it's not really possible to undo the damage later in life, when you wish you'd done things differently. (Children born from a thoughtless drunkenroll in the hay will not magically disappear just because you feel sorry about it.)
I also think that an over-emphasis on the sexual act itself damages the non-sexual aspects of male/female relationships. If the only way that males and females can relate to each other is through coitus, that's just really sad.

180 143- If this is really the "core" of what Catholics believe (pretty sure its not, though) I'm really sad for y'all. Yes, the sin is part of it (Jesus really did say that thinking lustful thoughts was adultery; he really did say that hating someone was the same as having killed them.) The point of all that, though, is that WE ARE FORGIVEN for it (okay- it's more complex than that: but that would be a full blog post all on its own).

The point of "Christian Living" (that is: abstinence until marriage, not getting plastered drunk, etc) is not that you can't do "fun" things, it's that, if you really love Christ like a Christian should, you won't want to.

Remember, "love" is a choice and an action- not an emotion.

You're right. It's not.

Catholic theology is incredibly complex and rich, with centuries of thought, theology, and evolution of faith behind its teachings. We don't make this shit up; if you really delve into the basis behind each "rule," it's all part of a consistent, larger picture. The problem is application. Application can fail, as its administered by failed human beings, and I think this is the fail to which Jerry alludes. When the emphasis is too much on guilt, as it seems to have been during his upbringing, it's a fail. When the emphasis is on "God is totally yr txting frnd, LOL!!" as it was during my upbringing, it's also a fail. The best application is in the middle, of course. Trick is finding it.

193 @143,158: Um...if you're willing to roughly equate every "fun" thing you did with sin, then I think you're problem runs a bit deeper than a dissatisfaction with your allegedly normal Catholic upbringing.

As for my own experience with Catholicism, I've felt plenty of guilt over the years, but certainly nothing that was in any sense disproportionate or debilitating, esp. considering that the things I felt guilty over were mostly instances in which I really had hurt people or really was engaging in destructive behavior, however mild. And in retrospect, even in the cases where matters were more immediately individual, evaluating my own guilty conscious at least prompted me to consider the broader implications of my actions, to ask why something might be considered wrong even when not immediately apparent, and forced me either to grapple with the enormous questions of my own identity and my relation with the world.

But it sounds like you got more of the parochial school Nun's Ruler treatment than anything like a serious moral education. Bummer....

She does all of these cutesy hand gestures and little dancing around but her voice is flat and she can't sing. Bing stops playing the piano and asks, What's all that? And imitates her swirling her hands around. He tells her to think about what she's singing and concentrate on the song and actually singing it not all of the other things. Today it's all about the schlock and none of it about the actually singing or musical ability.

Agreed. It's strange how we've come from an era of "prudishness" to this hyper-sexualized age of today. There is an appropriate balance, as evidenced by nudity being shown in Euro papers without too much fuss - we haven't reached it and we may not, given the cultural rifts between American and Europe.

While I am "prudish", unless somebody's sexual activities are interfering with my daily business, I really don't care about it and consider it none of my business. With that being said, we should take heed with this teenage sex trend because this demographic is where the majority of single mothers originate from. Which then feeds the dependency cycle.

I know I'm jumping in from the side here, so take it for what it's worth. I don't think the proclivity of certain adherents to accept or reject a hypothesis has anything to do with the question of the existence of God.From the point of view of a scientist (note the small s - it's not my profession by I use the principles and process), the question itself is so far beyond what I do that I simply don't have the tools to address it, and I think it's a waste of time to do so on that basis. It's like trying to determine if there's a city on a planet orbiting Sigma Draconis by tasting grapes from three South American countries - there just isn't a line from A to B.I think people just want to have the argument, not so many of them are interested in finding an answer.

219 According to a 2007 Centers for Disease Control survey, average age of first intercourse for US females was 17.3.

And from a historical perspective, that is way old. Historically, from all we can tell, the average age is probably 14-15 (younger in some societies). This reflects the fact that people tended to start families much earlier than they do now (and lived far shorter lives, generally). It's also a fact that in tribal societies, girls were married off at a young age regardless of their own wishes in return for power, prestige, or other considerations. In any time prior to the 1700's or so, a 20-year-old unmarried girl was pretty much an old maid. (Heck, even into the 1800's.)

My grandparents were married early -- my grandmother was 16, my grandfather just barely 18. My grandmother had three children before she was 20 years old (13 all together, one of whom died as an infant).

231 #227, you have a very valid point. When I was a young teen, I was all in favor of the concept of teen sex.
The problem was a steady diet of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and contraband Playboys had cemented my tastes in favor of tallish, nice chestedblondes, brunettes, and redheads in the mid-20s age bracket. When you're in junior high, even tall for your age, you have a very hard time meeting ex-college cheerleader types, let alone nailing one. It wasn't until my senior year of high school I even began to find women in my own age bracket attractive, and I didn't like most of them anyway.
So yes, an older brunette with a nice rack like Ms. Perry would have been the answer at about age 15.

233 How much further into the gutter will society have descended by the time she's a teenager?

America always goes through these periods of excess and renewal. You had the roaring 20's (where there as quite a lot of hanky-panky going on) to the Depression-era religious revival. You had the wartime conservatism replaced by the late-1940's bacchanals (the baby boom happened for a reason!). The 1950's marked a return to probity (though the so-called "conformist" 1950's is more myth than reality), and we all know what happened in the 1960's.

The wheel always turns.

Monty, almost all of that crap is MFM generated myth from the 20s on. The only thing that is fact is that the public discourse over the years has become much cruder and vulgar, the number of children born out of wedlock has exploded since the mid 60s and the "great society", and the frequency of STD infections has exploded right along with it.

When I was Katy Perry's age any DJ who played a song like this one in the South would have wound up in jail. The TV would not have even contemplated showing it.

I was a teenage girl not so long ago. I have a hard time believing I was ever that self-absorbed and overdramatic. Then again, I did end up destroying all my diaries from those days...

I try not to worry so much. Dealing with an infant will be rough without borrowing trouble. Plus I know her daddy will make sure that any boy who fools around with her dies in an extremely painful manner.

245 I would really, really like to say Katy Perry is THE problem, then it would just be a matter of turning her music off. Unfortunately, the real problem are the parents. Parents who basically don't care about their children, who let them do whatever they want to do. I think some parents even take a perverse joy seeing their children go up fast. Much of our society is completely unmoored from any kind of social constraint. Just do what you want to do.

249 I can strongly second the recommendation for homeschooling, even if it's just for a while.

Oldest daughter was homeschooled during the middle school years (grades 6- and is now in high school. The home education did her a world of good -- she thinks for herself, she has a very adult mindset, and best of all she is already developing a fine contempt for the idiots teaching her. She understands that school is not some terrifying ordeal, it's a strange little game dreamed up by the state Dept of Ed, so all she has to do is master the rules and play the game.

Well, polynikes, an accusation of moral inconsistency is pretty much the dictionary definition of "hypocrisy." As McMillan's defines it, hypocrisy is "behavior in which someone claims to have certain moral principles or beliefs but behaves in a way that shows they are not sincere."

You're accusing "many" of inconsistent moral standards, professing to be upset about sexualization of young girls while yawning at serial adultery. When you toss in lines like "So many of you are so inconsistent in your morality purges" and end with a witch-burning reference...yeah, hypocrisy is what's alleged.

Be that as it may, let's not argue and bicker over semantics. I agree with ace's arguments here. I also opposed Giuliani's candidacy, in part because of his personal history. I'm also sensitive to the perils of moral alarmism. Thus, I'd really like to see a response to the merits of ace's argument, if you'd care to offer one.

251 Feminism bears a lot of the blame here in my opinion. It basically became an ideology centered around women taking on the absolute worst aspects of men, which naturally includes an obsession with sex and constant physical gratification. Having raised [almost, I think] a stepson, son and identical twin girls, I can vouch for the importance of a nose wrinkle and "that is so vulgar" response when they try to push your buttons. My house was always filled with the kids and their friends. We had rules- shoes and hats off, greet the parents, and out of the family room every 45" for fresh air and food. They NEED us, WANT us to set those limits and boundaries to make them feel safe. Yes, I know my girls stashed unapproved tops or dresses to change into when they left the house a couple of times, but what was important is that they knew it was wrong and I could tell by how bratty they were the next day due to the guilt. They need the limits- gives them something to push against. Now 28, 22 and almost 21, all of them have told me that they loved the fact that if they were at all uncomfortable about something, they could say "My parents would kill me, and you'd probably be next". All of their friends understood.
I do happen to agree with Ace, there is a huge attempt to hypersexualize kids at younger and younger ages, but there are repercussions for these campaigns. Anyone remember thongs for 8 year-old girls from Abercrombie and Fitch? That was such a disaster, they had to come up with the Hollister chain to recoup profits.

Well, yeah, but there is something closer to home to make that point. Just watch the damn video. Katy is dressed in a sluttified Catholic School Girl uniform and some of the back up dancers are dressed in cheerleader outfits/football uniforms.
And yeah, the same stupid Katy Perry arguement could be made about how those aren't meant to entice teeneagers, but to represent how Katy feels.
But as ace pointed out, that's bullshit.

Pop songs no more influence actions as does hard rock metal influence murders and suicides.
That said(heh), I agree that the our moral standards have become more lax asfeminism has told women and girls that they are just like men and should beable to actlike men. That's a formula for disaster.

Thanks for digging up the stats; I was looking to see if anyone did since I knew all the guessing going on was quite off.

It wasn't that long ago when I was that age, and I have 2 younger siblings, and all my cousins are younger as well, so I still have a decent idea of what its like in the Middle/High school world. It wasn't that that every girl was losing their virginity at an early age; it was that a handful were, and continued on their promiscuous streak through the rest of secondary.

There seem to be two major factors: the parenting and the culture in the school. Teens are going to do what teens do: they conform to the culture they are in.

As for KP, I'm gonna 2nd ace on this one. But not in the 'sloppy' way.

265 I'm just thankful my eldest two stayed out of any of that sort of trouble until they became adults (and are being rather sensible for their age group as it is now -- knock wood); I'm just thankful that my 11 yo. son was a bit disgusted that Katie Perry was on Sesame St. and thinks she's "one of those women" (Grandma's code phrase for women of questionable morals) -- that already he has gained the insight that "those women" while fun to look at are not worthy of forming any serious relationship with; I pray that I may get him through to adulthood with that sort of attitude. I pray also that my two youngest will also grow up to be sensible and not one of "those women".
While far from being stridently religious I am now starting to see the great good sense of my father's rather draconian (almost Middle Eastern!) attitude towards raising females -- hate to say it, but he was right: there should be heavy family sanctions/warnings against disreputable behavior. I suppose I should also thank Brittney, Katie, Paris, Lindsay and the rest for providing good object lessons into the consequences of the same.

The problem that I see with the unmentionable is the same thing that happened with Sarah Palin, and to a certain extent with Fred Thompson.

Sarah Palin was demonized with tons of made up shit and the MFM made fun of her as a foolish bimbo. They edited her interviews to aid in their quest, in some cases going so far as to actually tamper with her responses.

With Fred Thompson they made up the "no fire in the belly meme" and edited speeches and disregarded his campaigning to the point that it was rarely shown. Then accused him of not campaigning. The MFM will always go all out to destroy ANY conservative candidate. They will support a Republican RINO in the primaries but then turn on him like a rabid dog when the primaries are over.

I find that kind of shit to be an abomination by the much vaunted "free press". But what I find just as aggravating is the number of supposed "conservatives" who buy into the MFM hype on these things.

I have watched a few of the "crazy" speeches by the unmentionable. I have also watched a few by the "crazy" Angle and Rand Paul. I found them all to be very reasonable and not crazy at all.

Also, short investigations reveal that the allegations are all BS. What I fear from those on our side is that they fall in two categories. Those who still listen to the MFM even though they are known liars and those who are hardcore Republicans for the sake of Republicans, and who also believe in the failed Republican "big tent" strategy and use that as excuse to vilify otherwise good candidates because they are "too conservative". .

I am just sick of hearing the BS from our own side.

As for the whole age thing: my dad probably had it right -- no age requirements, just "do not bring shame and dishonor unpon yourself and thus into my house, on pain of the consequences if it comes to that". 283 I am saying that conservative bloggers on here should know better AND forget the BS "electability" meme.

Posted by: Vic at September 27, 2010 07:24 PM

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, not so long as 'conservative' bloggers keep paying attention to polls and give them credence in elections.

The only people who should be taking polls are candidates' campaign teams. Period. There should be no media polls about anything. There is no reason for anyone to have to know what anyone else thinks about anyone or anything. The only reason the MF-ing media conducts polls is to push public opinion one way or another. Conservatives should ignore polls and just focus on policy and ideology and message. Instead, they look at polls and say 'oh, we can't say this or do this, because it polls poorly'. That's a bunch of BS.

True leaders lead the public, they don't allow the public to lead them. For instance... man-caused global warming and Cap-and-Tax. Anyone with a lick of common sense knew this was BS from the get-go. But, the ignorant who didn't research the stuff for themselves ended up believing the lies. Thus, we had 'polls' showing a high majority of people believed in global warming. And what happened? Instead of people of principle working to inform the public that it was BS and they were being played by communists looking to raise taxes enact socialist legislation, we had politicians who simply decided to support the global warming idea, since the public believed it. Why did they do that? Because 'polls' told them to, not because it was a principled stand.

What is "electability" based on? Looking at MF-ing media polls. And what are the purpose of MF-ing media polls? To try to influence people to think one way or another. I think 'ace' mentioned it in a post recently where he said that people like to be part of a 'winner'. So if they are undecided, but see that a certain candidate is 'polling' a certain way, they will end up voting for that candidate simply to be part of the 'winning team'.

Get rid of the MF-ing media polls and force people to actually think for themselves, and the entire game changes.

But conservative bloggers won't advocate ignoring polls, even though those polls are actually designed to game the system in favor of Democrats/Liberals.

They game the system by taking a GOP primary where there is a DIABLO vs a conservative and make many conservatives actually support the DIABLO, because 'polls' say the conservative 'can't win'. Without those meaningless 'polls', no conservative would even think of voting for the DIABLO based on something as ridiculously vague as "electability".

Think back to the 2008 GOP Primary. I remember more talk and focus about "electability" than about policies and ideology. As early as DEC 2004, people on the Right were talking about "who can beat Hillary in 2008?" Not "who has the best ideology and policies and ideas for our future after Bush is gone" but who is "electable".

And that's how the Left wins all the time. They get the Right to stop talking about conservatism and conservative principles and instead talking about "electability" and actually supporting RINOs and DIABLOs.

Electability and poll-driven politics is just allowing the Left to control the game. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how we can change the rules back in our favor.

286 The more I think about this the less I care.

There are people like Katy Perry who sing the praises of risky sex and promiscuity.

Then there are some of the posters here who proclaim the virtue of chastity and waiting for one's wedding night.

Meanwhile those of us who aren't society killing leftards or sexually neurotic social cons seem to be excluded from the conversation because we're not afflicted with either form of crazy.

It isn't a choice between Sodom and Gomorrah on one side and Children of the Corn on the other. Simple common sense is all you need.

Sex isn't something to anxious about or ashamed of. God doesn't hate you because you get horny. Sex is a normal and ordinary part of being alive, not some dread secret affliction or a moral failing.

Sex is also something that can lead to negative outcomes if you don't act responsibly, but that is no excuse for having phobias and other psychiatric issues about it.

Dealing with sexual issues is not rocket science. Don't sleep around. Don't have sex with someone you're not in a serious relationship with. Use effective contraceptives, and use them properly, if you are not ready to have children yet. I'm sure there are other things that could be added, but you get the point. This is called being an adult.

The problem with younger people is that because they tend to be immature, expecting them to deal with sex in an adult manner is asking too much. So we work to discourage them from having sex. But that too is no reason to get all twitchy and neurotic. Sex is just as dangerous as driving a car, and it should be treated with just as much matter-of-factness.

287 I loath this song and I loath Katy Perry.

But once again, Ace, there are creatures with some discretion over the media consumption of "tweeners" and they are called PARENTS.

No such daughter of mine would be allowed to buy this, using her own money or mine. She would get a talking to about Perry's exploitation of burgeoning teenage sexuality, and her own.

I realize you have no faith in parent's ability to reign in the externalities of the world, delicious chocolate frosted sugar smacks cereal most especially.

But they do, and they make the call. THEY DO.
And Christine's crazy goose chase for perfection and meaning in her spiritual life has absolutely zero to do with any of this.

Mr. Steve "smart and cool" Crowder wrote that neither smart nor cool piece, dragging not only his sexual habits but his vulgar assertion that he had no doubt about his female friends chastity. I

Excuse me, could you just SHUT UP and live your principles if you want to witness them to others.

What's missing is manners. DIscretion. A healthy respect for the utility of hypocrisy. Nice girls did, and always have, but if they learn nothing else, they should learn keep a lid on it for crissakes.

288 I'd just like to add something else to my above post:

Don't have children unless you are ready to GET MARRIED.

I see people having kids together in a relationship with about as much planned permanence as the car they are driving. A few years down the road they'll be off driving something else and off in a relationship with someone else.

Children deserve to have both parents and pledging ones commitment to the father or mother of ones children in the form of marriage is simply the right thing to do.

Posted by: Lee Reynolds at September 27, 2010 09:48 PM (/gY4D)

289 299 That's why I think my dad's ploy worked -- it wasn't about denying the basic drive to do the nasty; it was about don't do it because there will be repercussions (serious ones, dealt out by my dad -- who I did not want to tangle with). In short, don't act like a slut because I'll kick your assand then some for dishonoring my house. So I didn't -- and then my two serious boyfriends and husband got to reap the freaking whirlwind later on when I was an adult and out on my own (aka. no longer in my father's house), because I had all that repressed, pent up slutty behavior just looking for a not dishonorable outlet!
