New Research Says Mao's "Great Leap Forward" Killed 45 Million In 4 Years

Dear God.

Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikِtter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing "one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known".

Mr Dikِtter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million.

...Mr Dikِtter said that he was once again examining the Party's archives for his next book, The Tragedy of Liberation, which will deal with the bloody advent of Communism in China from 1944 to 1957.

He said the archives were already illuminating the extent of the atrocities of the period; one piece of evidence revealed that 13,000 opponents of the new regime were killed in one region alone, in just three weeks. "We know the outline of what went on but I will be looking into precisely what happened in this period, how it happened, and the human experiences behind the history," he said.

Liberals always use the excuse that Communism has never failed because it's never really be done right. Well, if 45 million dead is a mistake, I'd hate to see what a success looks like.

This is why it's always dangerous when people claim they have the answer for society, it eventually requires increasing control and violence by the state. Always. It's also a reminder that Tom Freidman's constant dreams of turning the US into "China for a Day" are at once silly and morally disgusting.

Now, I'm not saying that a murderous tyrant beats within the heart of American Democrats, that would be ridiculous. I do think however we should keep in mind that there are leftists in America who wouldn't mind purging a few million Americans if they won't get with the program. (the link is to LGF, just for fun. If it goes down the memory hole, check this out instead).

Added: D'oh! How could I forget this?

Thanks to several commenters for the reminder.

I am for socialism, disarmament and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control by those who produce wealth. Communism is, of course, the goal
...
I saw in the Soviet Union many opponents of the regime. I visited a dozen prisons — the political sections among them. I saw considerable of the work of the OGPU. I heard a good many stories of severity, even of brutality, and many of them from the victims. While I sympathized with personal distress I just could not bring myself to get excited over the suppression of opposition when I stacked it up against what I saw of fresh, vigorous expressions of free living by workers and peasants all over the land. And further, no champion of a socialist society could fail to see that some suppression was necessary to achieve it. It could not all be done by persuasion.

About 8 million in the Ukraine between 1929 and 1933 in the terror famine (Conquest's Harvest of Sorrow, especially the afterword from the glasnost era). Stalin did in (depending on whose numbers you believe, because the records don't exist and you can't just count the skulls from the mass graves, either) between 20 million (estimate accepted by Martin Amis), 28 million (US congressional estimate as of 1985 or so, when I was in college), and (Gulag Archipelago estimate) almost 60 million.

96 To the left, people are homogeneous workers serving the greater society, like ants. The death of an Ant is no consequence, and if the society is ultimately benefitted by the death by a significant percentage of the colony, well the well being of the colony as a whole outweighs the well being of any number of the individual members. Such a ruthless culling can be made in the minds of the collectivist morally and without regret or really any acknowledgment of the human lives, beautiful individual hopes and dreams, ruthlessly destroyed. Because who those people were as persons was inconsequential to society, and therefore was less than unimportant, rather in the mind of the collectivist society who they were as an individuals never existed at all.

My guess (and it's just that)...

The problem the Nazis had with body disposal was because they were shipping Jews and other 'undesirables' in from all over Europe to the concentration camps.

Each camp had a limited space for disposal.

The Chinese were just rounding people up in their locations, knocking out whole villages and regions. They could bury them in mass graves where they fell.

I think there will be some, interesting, archeological digs at some point.

109 I'm not saying that a murderous tyrant beats within the heart of American Democrats

The germ of mass murder is within the collectivist idea - it is not the ends, but becomes the means. When your program involves intervention and control over heretofore unregulated and/or private parts of people's lives, you are going to run into resistance and obstinacy by those who simply can't see the "bigger picture" and how it is so much better for them in the long run. They're clinging to their old ways and don't have the education and smarts of the authors of the new program. Then, you must coerce, otherwise the program would become voluntary and therefore not fully implemented. Resistance to coercion is necessarily met with escalations of the coercion, and ultimately the active murders.

The non-purposeful famines and starvation are foreseeable if you admit that the technocrats cannot allocate resources by balancing figures nearly as well as the peasants can with the benefit of their lived experience.

116 Now, I'm not saying that a murderous tyrant beats within the heart of American Democrats, that would be ridiculous.
I would and am saying that. Human nature is flawed. It is how we deal with that flaw that is important.
All of us have a tyrant living inside of us.
I thought mainstream conservative thought was that human nature had to be restrained because of our instinct for violence and tyranny. And that was why we had separation of powers and a Republic, not a pure democracy. Because both the mob and the tyrant were to be feared and restrained. And because of this restraint, American society/the American revolution were so successful.
And I thought it was leftist/progressive thought that man was perfectible, if only the right government/leader was put in place with enough power.
Isn't that why the death toll always goes through the roof when they take over? If they could only do enough purges to get rid of enough enemies of the state/proletariat/mass etc, peace and harmony would reign.
It's always the peace of the grave that reigns in the end...

180 Now, I'm not saying that a murderous tyrant beats within the heart of American Democrats

You see this is where we disagree.

I don't think of Mao as a murderous tyrant, at least not to the attune of 45 million. Their death was an unfortunate side effect of implementing his plans, but he never wished them any ill, but in the end their death was of no consequence. He was apathetic to their lives and his goals were more important, if 45 million had to starve to death oh well. Eggs omelet and all of that. And I think that devil beats in the heart of every liberal; for if they are willing to sacrifice freedom, something most of us hold as being more valuable then our own lives, then why wouldn't they also sacrifice some lives as needed to obtain their perfect society? I mean without the subjective value of freedom, what is the objective value of an individual life? Maybe most of them wouldn't kill us outright, but if we simply had to die, I don't think they would be stepping in to save us if that meant putting their plans on hold. And that apathy to life is the same one Mao had. To their line of thinking it would be worth it if some people were unfortunately going to die as a side effect on the way to Nirvana.

184 --Keep in mind that many of those
deaths, like those in Ukraine in the '30s, were starvation. There were
probably still some family members around to bury them and since
starvation can be attributed to "famine" (a man-made, perfectly
avoidable one) they do not need to be immediately covered up with the
same urgency as a violent death.

Posted by: logprof

Oh, dear, no. The cover up of the famine was urgent - to the point of shooting the census board because they noted a fall in population (and it was worse than they recorded, probably). Further, If you tried to bury a family member during the famine, you probably croaked while doing so. The famine was beyond one person or another dying. It was agony throughout the Ukraine and a number of other regions.

The villages were full of bodies in the Ukraine, and were simply left there, rotting and empty of human life. The Soviet regime would collect the bodies of peasants who fled to the cities and died there, put them on trains, and dump the bodies - just dump them - about 40 miles outside the cities. The bodies were left. They didn't bother to clean up, much, because, well, no one could see and those they let see didn't care.

I cannot emphasize to you how really stupid pretending these famines were not deliberate - and that the numbers aren't as high or higher than scholars say - would be.

I'm not sure if I can speak to Mao's personal intent, but it is common among ambitious would-be tyrants to want their Utopian societies purged of wrong-minded people who can't get with the new program. Cambodia is one example: they didn't even try to re-educate the intelligentsia or bourgeoisie, they just slaughtered 'em (while or after using them as slave labor). The USSR is another example: sending the political undesirable to the gulags was intended to be a permanent and terminal measure.
These "leaders" are rarely indifferent to the fate of those who oppose them-- or who support them insufficiently. They generally actively want them excised from the body politic, like cancerous tumors or disease organisms.

Because things have gotten so much better since Barry has take over:

In the second year of a brutal recession, the ranks of the American poor soared to their highest level in half a century and millions more are barely avoiding falling below the poverty line, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.
About 44 million Americans - one in seven - lived last year in homes in which the income was below the poverty level, which is about $22,000 for a family of four. That is the largest number of people since the census began tracking poverty 51 years ago.
The snapshot captured by the census for 2009, the first year of the Obama presidency, shows an America in the throes of economic upheaval.

I'm not saying you are a mass murderer in waiting but adopting the language of the left ('sub human filth') while attacking them for the same thing is some pretty sweet irony.Just saying.

There is not one whit of moral equivalency here.

The left want to steal shit from other people and then force them to dance to whatever tune they feel like calling.

I want to be left alone and I leave others alone in return.

Mao had to kill so many in support of his program only to have his program slowly unravel as it has while Pinochet had to "disappear" so few to set Chile on a path to freedom and prosperity not enjoyed by other Latin American countries. Coercive collectivism is a pathology. It is a disease on mankind, and its carriers need to be suppressed. If they gain too much headway, the carriers need to be removed.

Leftists are subhuman filth. And yes, I am deliberately dehumanizing them in my mind because if leftists here ever start channeling their inner Pol Pot, I need to have the proper mindset to do what I need to do to protect myself and mine.

Population of China is what over a billion? That means 45 million is what like 1/20th the population? China's got what 2 billon acres? So if you killed them all instantaneously, you couldn't get the other 19 people you didn't kill to just bury the dead person where they fell in about 20 minutes?

Hitler had a logistical problem because he was trying to dispose of several million bodies with only a few thousand SS to do it, and a very small geographical footprint they were trying to do it in. No such man power or footprint shortage exists in China. No logistical problem of disposal exists. Think of it, that country disposes of the human waste (poo) of over a billion people *every**day* and they can't find a nifty place to store a few million bodies over the course of *years*?

The Chinese aren't done yet, so I'm guessing that (by the time the regime falls apart and the records become accessible) we're looking at a minimum total of 100 million.

228 WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama named Wall Street critic Elizabeth Warrenas his new consumer financial czar on Friday, drawing praise from liberals and an outcry from Republican opponents and the financial industry.
Warren, a Harvard law professor and outspoken consumer advocate, will set up a powerful new consumer financial protection agency under a sweeping regulatory overhaul enacted in July.
"The Obama administration's first priority should be ensuring that our financial institutions are operated in a safe and sound manner," Republican Congressman Spencer Bachus said. "Instead they resort to a calculated political ploy to appoint a passionate, but inexperienced, advocate to run a new agency with unprecedented power."
Matt McCormick, a portfolio manager and banking analyst with Bahl Gaynork, called Warren's appointment a "thumb in the eye to people trying to address real issues."
"It is obviously more political than focused on correcting ills of what happened in the financial industry. I really doubt she will have the ability to bring people together considering the political nature of her appointment. It is troubling."

What a surprize that Barry appoints (avoiding a nomination process again) a Harvard professor with no real world experience who is fanatically anti-business to this position

They don't give a shit, the only enemy they hate is the one that refuses to tell them how great, smart and important they are; and when they set up their little socialist, communist hell, in their dream, everyone will tell them how great, smart and important they are.

Even if it has to be through bloody teeth.

That video reminds me of my daughters college graduating 'keynote' speaker. I had to sit through some hour long lecture about the 'Tuskegee airmen' - a topic I was well aware of. An event that no one in the audience had anything to do with, happened before almost all of us were born, and something that given the choice, not one person would have stayed to listen to. But it was his speech first, then diploma's. My daughter thanked me later for not running up and cold-cocking the arrogant SOB who was intent on lecturing the assembled 99.99% white devils in the audience. She knew I was hot.

The 'Tuskegee airmen' topic had nothing to do with the future of those couple hundred graduates other then the opportunity of some hater to shake his finger at a couple thousand white folk who paid millions of dollars to support that university. The arrogance and vapidness of academia know no bounds.

241 Hitler had logistical problems of disposing of 6 million people

Another way of thinking of it is like this. If survival in China were similar to the US...In the US, about 7000 people die a day, in China it would be 22,000 a day, meaning 8 million *should* die each year if things were going as good in China as the US. Split 45 million up over four years, and you get a plus of about 11 million people per year a little more than double the expected death rate.

Compare to say the Spanish flu which wiped out about 4% of the worlds population in one year. And guess what, we disposed of all the bodies; so efficiently that it is hard to get an accurate casualty count.

Indeed.
But to be charitable, I'm willing to say that Leftists are fully-human filth. Entirely actualized human scum. They're amoral, and they absolutely would kill us if they could and thought it was in their best interest. They will lie to your face about it - but if they don't know you disagree with them they'll let the mask slip. Since they can't murder us (yet) they are instead intent on simply enslaving us and making us serve them - this they do through taxation, regulation, and other acts of economic subversion.
Now the Muslims, on the other hand, are subhuman scum. Anyone who could knowingly embrace that toxic, filthy ideology of his own free will is a subhuman by choice. He has surrendered a key part of what it is to be an actual human being. Until such time as one turns his back on it, he is not a human being in my eyes.

I grew up around hippies, I've worked with them. You're basically right here, though most of them don't have the balls to actually do anything but whine privately about how we don't get to have any fun mass-murders like all the cool dictatorships.

Heck, as long as they don't know you're not one of them (a chronic weak assumption they make), they can even behave decently. But they have this "psycho switch."

A lot, a *LOT* of leftists are philosophically on-board with state-sponsored mass-murder, mass oppression, and so on, but it's usually nod-and-wink in public. Most people would not *believe* how many of these cretins have copies of something like Prairie Fire and harbor fantasies about purges and pograms.

Seriously, laziness and cowardice are all that's saved us from a bloody (and failed) revolution so far. The long march through the institutions is supposed to get them past that stage - well, it was supposed to have done that 20 years ago, but it didn't work.

Ironically, all that graft, feather-bedding and rent-seeking, and the insane public unions, may have *saved* us from the leftist master plan - if only to destroy us financially. Even the doctrinaire leftists in power don't want to give up all their creature comforts.

No, killing the body is evil, but the killing of history and culture? That's really overwhelming.

Look, I am not the person who will kill people in job lots. I'm way, way too aware of what it means in reality. Do not misinterpret me. History is ugly; most people, over the history of the world, have been ground into the dust, and turned into dust. Misery has been the default state of the vast majority of the human race. What has raised us - you and me, Americans - from that state is freedom and the rule of law. I am exquisitely aware of this. All that will preserve this fine world you and I inhabit is freedom, and I will go out of my way to preserve it. Especially since the only way to preserve history and culture is freedom and civil liberties (and not as the ACLU tends to define said freedom and liberty!).

But I'm here to tell you that all that makes the sheer, grinding, misery and suffering of the past even vaguely bearable are the few shining artifacts preserved. There aren't enough of those, and to destroy those that do exist is to murder - again - all those whose voices we will never hear.

You don't understand, I'm sure, but that's where I stand.

If it came down to the Louvre on fire and I could save any 10 paintings I wanted or one infant. The Mona Lisa would have smiled for the last time.

271 You don't understand, I'm sure

Your right. I would rather have no past and be alive, rather than a grand legacy and be dead. Life has meaning inherently, granted by the creator, not by the works of my hand. If you search for meaning in such mundane places without a God to guide you, and take that search seriously, you will find subjectively that it is everywhere, and objectively nowhere, which will inherently lead you to the same conclusion, a culture is meaningless without a people, people without a culture however will make one. So it makes no sense to prefer saving a culture above saving the people in it, or ascribe a greater crime to destroying a culture, over destroying the people in it.

279 George Orwell said it best in his essay "James Burnham and the Managerial Revolution":

"If one examines the people who, having some idea of what
the

Russian régime is like, are strongly russophile, one finds that, on
the

whole, they belong to the "managerial" class of which Burnham
writes.

That is, they are not managers in the narrow sense, but scientists,

technicians, teachers, journalists, broadcasters, bureaucrats,

professional politicians: in general, middling people who feel
themselves

cramped by a system that is still partly aristocratic, and are
hungry for

more power and more prestige. These people look towards the USSR and
see
in it, or think they see, a system which eliminates the upper class,

keeps the working class in its place, and hands unlimited power to
people

very similar to themselves. It was only AFTER the Soviet régime
became

unmistakably totalitarian that English intellectuals, in large
numbers,

began to show an interest in it. Burnham, although the English
russophile

intelligentsia would repudiate him, is really voicing their secret
wish:

the wish to destroy the old, equalitarian version of Socialism and
usher

in a hierarchical society where the intellectual can at last get his

hands on the whip."

"... where the intellectual can at last get his hands on the whip." Leftism in a nutshell.

291 Check out "The Black Book of Communism". Of course B+rry and company think the commie bastards are Okay cause they 'helped the oppressed'.
They never mention that the commies did the oppressing and then killed those they oppressed. In fact they oppressed just about everybody they could get get their bloody hands on. They even took whacks at each other when they could. It was a regular Murder Inc.

292 And these sons of bitchs claim there won't be death panels. Fuck them.

293 That's over 30,000 people dying a day, just because of those policies. Hitler and so-called German efficiency couldn't match the sheer brutal effectiveness of starvation and slavery backed up by a three-million man domestic police-force/Army and the whole Little Red Book brigades.

I'm thinking Satan had to think up a whole new layer of hell for guys like Mao. Certainly Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot would be some of his few cellmates. Ten bucks says it involves a gimp suit and someone named Zed.

295 For those who missed the article-thingy and link-thingy at the top of the thread, that's 45 million in 4 years, not the entirety of China's mass-murder. The final total will almost certainly be over 100 million, and will almost certainly never be accurately known.

I have seen surveillance photos (no, I can't personally vouch for their perfect athenticity, but the source was fairly credible) of China from many years ago, of cities after some of the announced "earthquake kills 100,000" disasters.

Intact buildings, bodies being pushed through the streets with bulldozers and tractors.

Can't prove it, but I believe it. They sure know how to "deplete the surplus population" over there. How long ago was it that Chinese patrols were caught "hunting" pilgrims and peasants in Tibet, and what ever came of that anyway? Nothing.

I always thought the "Free Tibet" movement was hilarious. Stickers everywhere, maybe a charity meeting with the Dalai Lama, but when did you actually see a leftist actually taking China to task?

Hippies are now actually blaming "commercialism" for China's ills. Yeah, right, pull the other one.

309 To help you become an accomplished research paper writer, you will prepare several research papers based upon the studies completed in research lab. So to take professional editing help for your papers' approval is not a bad idea.

Written and oral communications skills are probably the most universal qualities sought by graduate and professional schools as well as by employers. You alone are responsible for developing such skills to a high level. When I research a topic, I may be interested in just the methods, a specific result, the interpretation, or perhaps I just want to see a summary of the paper to determine if it is relevant to my study. To this end, many journals require the following sections, submitted in the order listed, each section to start on a new page.

There are variations of course. Some journals call for a combined results and discussion, for example, or include materials and methods after the body of the paper. The well known journal Science does away with separate sections altogether, except for the abstract.

310 It's right here that yesterday in Bible study we were discussing what evil angels do, and the topic came around to discrimination. I said there are two kinds of research paper discrimination. The first is what we think of usually - when we make judgments based on what doesn't matter, like not voting for somebody because of their race or gender research paper. That's bad discrimination. But there is discrimination that's good and necessary. For instance, "You have no way to pay this loan back; therefore I'm not going to give it to you." When we don't properly discriminate, evil thrives research paper.

I explained that the KGB wanted to get rich, powerful people in media, education, and business to believe it would be good to have a society with NO discrimination research paper. That doesn't just mean we don't have the bad discrimination, but also that we don't have the good discrimination. So there's no difference between those who work and those who don't, research paper those who make sound choices and those who don't, etc. Everyone is guaranteed the same outcome regardless of what they do. Nothing we do matters research paper. That's what communism is, and people who live under it often end up alcoholics or an average of 6 abortions in their lifetime. If what we do doesn't matter, we lose the will to live. That's the legacy of communism research paper.

I mentioned that Yuri Bezmenov was amazed at how the openly-communist folks from the '60's are in control of media, education, and business. And wherever someone totally controls the flow of ideas research paper, it's ripe for the devil and his surrogates to lie and deceive. As long as the realities of life and the truth are observable to everyone, we're not going to wander too far from reality research paper. But when the truth is hidden, people can't learn from reality.

Then I made my fatal error. I mentioned that all of the news companies have the proof that Obama is a member of The New Party - a branch of the Democratic Socialists of America research paper. I was going to say that they won't let anyone know that truth research paper. We can make our choices for whatever reason we think best, but when someone needs to deceive us, evil is at work and we need to watch out.

Before I could finish, though, a lady jumped up waving her arms and shouting that we shouldn't talk about this in church. Church is for how we're supposed to become better people research paper. Then she and her husband stormed out.

Later, someone commented that the devil can work wherever he wants to, and if we refuse to consider his role in any area of our life, we give him free rein there research paper. Another added, "I think it was clear that the devil was right here in Bible study - and didn't like being recognized." It's right here.
