Stay Classy, Christine O'Donnell

She didn't make the charge; a firm employed by her did. She's not commenting.

A conservative firm until recently employed by the Delaware primary campaign of conservative Christine O'Donnell against Rep. Mike Castle casually leveled an extraordinary and unsupported charge of a gay affair against Castle in a video posted to its website today, the ugliest salvo yet in an extremely bitter primary.

Walker said he had no compunction about repeating the rumor about Castle because "he's a threat to American sovereignty."

He didn't offer any evidence for the claim.

She cannot win in Delaware, which is usually among the ten most Democratic states in the union. Allow me to be a little elistist -- what in this odd biography says "serious candidate for Senator"?

I was already predisposed to endorsing Castle, feeling this was a bridge too far (or a RINO too far), and then I recalled who Christine O'Donnell was -- she's a fill-in guest on Hannity and other talk shows. She has always grated on me, because she always seems pretty unprepared (or just not really a strong thinker), and tends to just repeat the same three or four obvious bullet-points.

If I have turned the channel off almost every time she's been on, I do not see how she is going to wear well in Democrat-stronghold Delaware.

When we were trying to get Scott Brown elected, some objected that he was a RINO. I said at the time: This is a gift from God. It is unseemly to look down one's nose at a gift from God and ask, "Couldn't you have gotten something better?"

I do not know why it is that Mike Castle is running 12 points or so ahead of his Democratic rival. It could be partly due to his despised RINOism, of course. And it's also due to personal characteristics which he alone possesses and cannot be transferred to O'Donnell -- like, as the state's only at-large Representative (the state has only one Rep.), he knows everyone in the state, has campaigned statewide nine times before. For whatever reason, the voters trust him, seem to like him. (Well, "like" as much as one can like a politician.)

For whatever reason, they've decided he's okay by them. And preferable to a Democrat. And so he polls 10-12 points ahead.

Meanwhile the latest Rasmussen poll puts O'Donnell ten points behind Coons.

And on that point, I ask, where is the plausible pathway to candidate growth? What is the realistic plan for getting O'Donnell up from ten points down to at least even?

Here's the trouble:

1. Ideologically, she is strident and hardcore. This means she's out of sync with Delaware. In 2008, Joe Biden trounced her (no one really wanted to run against him, except O'Donnell) 65%-35%, his largest margin of victory ever... and voters also sort of knew he wasn't even going to be Senator, he was going to be Vice President.

2. Often a compelling biography can make up for some mismatch here (like, Joe Miller's West Point, Bronze Star Desert Storm, Yale Law super-bio), but O'Donnell's is not only not strong, it's noticeably weak. I look at her bio and I sort of see my own. She might as well just say "Sketchy Blogger/Drifter" at the top of the page.

3. A new candidate can often be expected to grow into a good speaker and media-player as she learns the craft, just as a rookie quarterback can grow into the roll. But to the extent Christine O'Donnell has a job at all, it's speaking on FoxNews and CNN when they need someone last-minute. So she does in fact have experience, much more experience than your average neophyte politician. And I'm sorry to say, five or six years at this and she's simply bad at that job, and I cannot for the life of me imagine how she suddenly gets better when we need her to be better.

So where is the plausible pathway for growth? I don't see it. There are three critical areas for candidate success, and she is a... I hate picking on an underdog, and she's a nice lady and all that, but in all three areas she fails. Rather badly.

Now I'm not in love with Mike Castle. He supported cap and tax in the last go-round. That is one my Rubicons... almost my abortion issue, or my 2nd Amendment issue, if you know what I mean. One of my Big Ones. One of the things that get me going emotionally.

I'm not going to tell you he's not a RINO. He is. Straight-up, no chaser. He's a RINO.

But I also know that if he's elected, he votes for a Republican for control of the Senate. (A silly rumor undoubtedly peddled by O'Donnell's supporters notwithstanding.)

That is to say: We cannot win full control of the Senate without a Republican in this seat. This seat has long been one of the seats we were just assuming we would win. Because Castle has been comfortably out front for a long, long time.

This is not some longshot pick-up where it really makes little difference because we have no realistic chance anyway, so might as well swing for the fences. We have been counting this as an easy pick-up. When you read "Republicans will pick up at least 7 seats" this is number two or three on that list, after the gimme Arkansas pick-up.

And we're going to toss this away? For what?

She can't win. Period. So it has to be kept in mind, in doing political calculations: When you vote for her, you are not just voting for someone with a slightly smaller chance of prevailing in the general election. You are voting against someone with a 90% chance of winning in favor of someone with a 0% chance of winning.

Okay, maybe not zero; one can never say zero. Fine. 1%.

The vote for her would not be strategic, or aimed at a plausible victory scenario. It would be pure RINO-punishing (and cutting off one's own nose to spite one's face). If RINO-punishing is the only thing that matters -- and I stress: Castle is a RINO, and I sure the hell can't claim he doesn't deserve to be punished -- then vote for her.

If something more tangible than protest and punishment is sought, vote for the guy who's way out ahead of the Democrat. RINO or not. (And just to be clear-- RINO.)

Mike Castle will vote against us on 30% of stuff. You will not like him. I will not like him.

But I will like him better than the Democrat Coons, voting against us on 88% of stuff. And yeah, in a blue state, with a strong Democratic majority, he can afford to be one of the solid liberal votes for Obama's socialist agenda. Because he is not going to have to worry about losing his seat for voting too liberal.

The pathway to success is to change Blue to Purple, and Purple to Red, and Red to Even Redder. We are doing that. We are trading in RINO Murkowski for a Senator more in sync with a true red state.

But as we trade in, we can't move by more than one color. We can get a purple guy elected to a blue state, a red guy (like Angle) elected to a purple state, and a hooker's-lipstick-red guy elected to a red state.

We cannot get a super-red person elected to a blue state. Period. The anti-Obama factor gives everyone about an 8% bump. Add that to Christine O'Donnell's 35% (from last time) and she gets to 43%.

That's what we call a loss.

Strategically, we go easy on this one, we bank the sure thing and call it progress, because it is progress. If we gamble, we lose. It's not even a gamble. It's just tossing a stack of chips back to the house for no reason.

Uggh: This may be excusable. I know I wouldn't excuse it if she were a Democrat.

I won't lie and say this would be a huge campaign issue. It wouldn't be. But combine this with the "That's the rumor" thuggishness and it begins to paint a rather shabby picture.

So: Bio is out. Ideology is out. Media savvy is out.

Character is.... well, questionable.

What exactly will we be running on, I'd like to know.

That thanks to Gabe.

37 Plus, this is not some bright red state where we could dump a RINO (such as AK or UT) or run a conservative in a primary who had a decent shot of winning the general over a hand picked (by the RNC) RINO (see FL or the TX Governor race of KBH).
Also, so long as the NRSC stays as far away as possible, I may have to silently assent to this one and save my energy for getting non RINOs nominated in states where would have a decent chance of winning.

Posted by: eddiebear at September 02, 2010 11:22 AM (v1cQf)

38 Not that I am hot for O'Donnell, as senator anyway, but there is another downside to Castle, besides the fact that the only important vote he makes with the Rs is to caucus with them, his age. He's 71. I think it's a good bet he will serve one term. Taking the Delaware Senate seat from the Dems is a tough undertaking and the Repubs have a once in a generation opportunity to do just that this year. Any R winning is going to be relying an awful lot on incumbency during any reelection.
Is it smart to elect a man who is likely to chuck away that advantage and soon? It would be better to get someone younger in that seat. I would liken it to Obama appointing Kagan. At any other time she doesn't get in but Obama knew things were going his way and went with it. The Rs should do the same. We can trust a little bit to luck here if it means a big payoff.

48 Dino Rossi had been elected before.

Look, some people are good at this and connect and some aren't. And sometimes the people with the right ideological profile just don't have the right stuff to actually win an election.

Doug Hoffmann, of NY-23 fame, was right ideologically, but was a poor candidate.

Now we had to support him -- it was a no-brainer -- but the fact is that a candidate's weakness *as* a candidate matters. It is not something to blow off completely.

Here we are confronted with a difficult choice, because Castle is wrong on so many issues, but he is not merely clearly a superior candidate, but almost embarrassingly a better one.

O'Donnell may be right on the issues (though I don't know... she talks mostly about religious stuff), but is a really flawed candidate.

In the end, I just don't see how she can win. I "know" her as much as the voters will know her, and my own feeling is one of antipathy. I am a prisoner of my own experience. I can't help but imagine others will be similarly struck by her in a negative way.

Throw in this leftist sort of crap -- "We are free to ignore personal ethical/moral obligations to fair play and principled behavior because our opponent is a 'threat to American sovereignty'" -- and, well, what the hell, man. What the hell.

But John Carney cannot and will not 'whip anything'. He has no talent and no accomplishements to his name, and he's a liar. But he's a Dem, he has a pulse, he has name recognition, and the Republican party will not seriously contest him.
O'Donnell is running for the Senate.

And yes, I have said many times, there is a downside to having a Republican RINO or DIABLO even if it somehow gives you "control" which I don't think we are going to get even with this State. These people sit on important committees as well and they enable Dems to get stuff out by stabbing the Repubs in the back.

As for charges of a gay affair with no evidence he should seek legal counsel because that, in a race for office, should be considered actionable. I think it meets the "malice" test.

I'm trying to not be a total dick, but I did encourage people to take a look at the bio.

It is hard to pick on an underdog.

But this stuff... hey, Democrats know about this stuff too.

We as conservatives of course can forgive all this for someone we like. Of course we can; we usually do. We have a lot of flawed people we forgive.

But it's not just a question of whether we can forgive, but whether others can. Especially in Delaware where it's like 40% Democrat, 30% independent (who lean more to the left than typical indpendents) and 30% republicans (who ALSO lean more to the left than typical Republicans).

If she had something in any of the three areas, I'd say give the girl a shot, roll the dice. Good bio, impressive speaker... fine, let's gamble on that and see if she can make hardcore social conservatism sell in a notoriously liberal state.

But without any of those? What's she going to run on? Pluck? She can't run on pluck and moxie the whole campaign.

Barack Hussein Obama won big in 2008. Anything is possible. Obama was a great candidate. He somehow articulated all his radical leftwing views in a way that made him seem reasonable and moderate. He won NC and IN, for pete's sake!

Of course the difference between Reagan and Obama is Reagan wasn't fooling the electorate into voting for him; Reagan was sincere. Reagan can win in DE in 2010...if he was alive...and young.

118 51 seats sets the agenda in the senate. We don't have a lock on that number. It is doable but we can't give any races away. In two years there will be many more dem seats up, these being the first won in the anti repub wave of 2006. Then we start with a larger base and have more room. In Wis. Kohl's seat will be in play. He is probably not going to run again and he was able to buy his seat the times he ran. Besides, a candidate is held responsible for their supporters, and these clowns probably just screwed O"Donnell big time.

I think Ace's analysis of O'Donnell's political viability misses the point that she keeps running for super-duper high office (U.S. Senator) without making her, em, "bones" by getting elected in a bid for a more modest office and working her way up through the party and learning that way. In her defense, I don't think there is much of a Republican party structure in Delaware considering party affiliation and the fact that most public office holders in Delaware - even if Democrats - have a more lax attitude towards business and regulation than is typical of national Democrats, thus siphoning off financial support that would otherwise inure to the benefit of Republicans.

And as a Senator, he would be one of those confirming a Supreme Court nominee, who decide more than "puritanical bullshit" issues.

Finally, remember how we got Obamacare. The Maine sisters and Specter enabled that. You know, the ones that "we were lucky to get, given where they're from and the circumstances that we grown-ups know all about".

That's the question for Castle. Will he help cut entitlement spending, or will he stand in the way?

If he is against repeal of ObamaCare, then yes, he's worse than a Democrat, because not only is he helping the Obama agenda, but he's a mouthpiece for liberals who will call him "one of the good ones" in order to trash all the hardworking conservatives out there.

But if he's for it, then I'm fine with him deviating from the party line on other issues. Cap and trade I'm not thrilled about but I'll accept his support for it if it means defeating ObamaCare.

137 Looking ahead two years from now, will we revisit this, when cap and trade is the law of the land because Castle was building his eco-cred legacy, like former Gov. Peterson did here? I doubt it.
Me too. Because Cap and Trade is not going to be the law of the land. Ironically, the reason is because of Democrats from coal producing states.
I'm not sure I understand the logic of saying the guy isn't right on all the issues so lets elect a Democrat who is wrong on all the issues and won't help us get a majority. A senate seat once won is more times than not a lifetime appointment or at least good for 2 or 3 terms. Is it easier to take a Republican who wavers on certain issues and pull him into the fold when the trend is going to the right or flip a Democrat on all issues?

And the state party here still dumped her? Why? She dared oppose Castle, their pre-ordained pick. Primaries here are a joke (think the NY process for NY-23).

On the flip side, yes, we can elect a RINO. But keep in mind what the other three letters that aren't R mean, and that, well, the accomplishment may well be meaningless, unless you just want to give the Maine sisters a Delaware brother.

Victory begins with the electorate. If you don't have that foundation, the rest won't mean much.

163 Mayor Michael Bloomberg left New York Tuesday to campaign nationally for the mid-term elections.

Bloomberg will endorse a string of politicians running in races across the country, including Democratic Senate candidate Joe Sestak, Republican Senate candidate Mike Castle, and Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, another Democrat.

The mayor's appearance on the campaign trail comes as his passionate defense of building a mosque near Ground Zero garners national attention. Bloomberg's first stop was a scheduled morning appearance in Philadelphia to endorse Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak, who is running for Senate.

"In deciding to throw his support behind Joe, Mayor Bloomberg cited the independent, pragmatic mindset that Joe will bring to solving problems in the Senate much like he did in the military and Joe's approach to putting Americans back to work," the campaign said in a statement. Sestak has also spoken out in support of the mosque.

Bloomberg will return to New York to hold a fundraiser for Delaware Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Mike Castle, the Wall Street Journal reported.

What's moral, ethical, fair, or principled about cheating on your wife and being a stealth gay so you can vote for gay marriage? If true, voters have the right to know about character flaws (cheating) and conflicts of interest (teh gheys). All disclosures start out as rumors. As I had noted before. The party and Castle know that they have a green light. If my experience and those whom I know are typical, while many prefer O'Donnell's positions, they will support Castle in the end. So he knows that he can wail away here with little cost to himself. Admittedly, an edited tape doesn't negate a botched interview or a baseless rumor.

Rather than worry about whether we should support a sketchy sociopath like O'Donnell or a Lincoln Chaffee pimp like Castle, I think conservatives' long-term interests lie in working to get the whole of New England and all of its ridiculously small and inconsequential states absorbed into Massachusetts and call it a victory.

Having met both, you are two for two. Ace does raise valid points in that on the face of it, her positions place her to the right, while Castle is agreeably malleable( to the Delaware voter). Plus, there's no way she can win.
No-brainer... elect Castle and then try to influence him as much as possible, but at least with him conservatives will have some influence. And in the unlikely even there are 51 GOP senators come January, he'll vote with teh GOP to organize teh Senate.

Different dynamic. The Republican candidate had no name recognition, a gambling scandal and no cash. He was the guy who got the nod because no one else wanted it. Plus it was a one issue election, the war. If he had been even as good as Christine O'Donnell then Ned Lamont would be a Senator today.

This wouldn't bother half as much as the fact that the party here is kissing off the House seat. This, during an expected wave year, where party identification is at a record level of difference. And this stinking little state only has two national offices up for grabs this year. We're talking about re-taking the House and in Delaware we're handing off the seat. Watch what happens. You'll se the republican candidate descend to token status. Against a placeholder whose only achievement was avoiding being devoured by his boss (Gov Ruthann 'no-neck' Minner). Mike Castle is a post Constitutional Era progressive, that has placed a combination of leftist ideology and self serving interests above what is best for Delaware and our country. Like an old rotten log at the bottom of a polluted swamp, Mike Castle has absorbed the poisons of a life time of political dealing and has become part and parcel of our current political malaise. The web of favors owed has extracted a price on his judgement, with the rest of US paying the bill... Christine O'Donnell is a Constitutional conservative, and enters the political fray as a citizen politician who would use the Constitution as her litmus test for legislation and fulfilling her roles of advise and consent. She brings with her a fresh perspective on governance, one that exemplifies the founding of our nation and a belief in American exceptionalism. There has never been a clearer choice.

Nope. If true, and if the allegations have merit, that's a huge problem. Please note that the local rag holds no love for any republican, especially one that dares to be pro-life. 236 Cheating on a spouse is a fair political issue to present to the voters. Marriage is a voluntary act and includes a pledge of fidelity. Betraying that trust besmirches one's character and is relevant to a candidate's pledges given to voters about what principles and policies he will uphold in office. Sexual orientation is irrelevant. No foul on O'Donnell.

O'Donnell never received a diploma from Fairleigh Dickinson because she owed the school money. I don't know if she's ever referred to that factoid about her background. Oddly, on the Supreme Court, the newbies are almost always the Chief Justices. It is believed that elevating one of the sitting judges would be too disruptive as it would change relationships and make a former equal colleague a leader.

I know many people who had to wrangle with colleges over debts, especially in the fee and loan filled world. That could stem from several things
Financial disclosure violations are serious, in and of themselves, and because we see Dems treat them like Sheryl Crow treats toilet paper.
Old debts from prior campaigns also aren't new, but then they are still serious. We've seen how that can get distorted, especially when 'sacred honor' is at stake.
What sticks with me is that the local rag never misses the chance to fire off on a republican candidate. This is the paper whose star columnist (Barney Frank) gleefully accused ALL wives of airmen at Dover AFB to be whores. They are what passes for class here.

1. For the same reason that Castle resorted to the ads that I see right now on this site.
2. Because he has the party behind him and she does not
3. He is better placed, both within the party and by being a current officeholder.
The nice thing about this country, and this site, is that you get to see the terrible ratings that Castle received. You also get to se unsettling allegations regarding O'Donnell. You can then make up your mind for yourself.

260 Finally, remember how we got Obamacare. The Maine sisters and Specter enabled that.

No, they went all-in for the Porkulus bill (aka ARRA, of Recovery Summer Fevah fame). Specter had skedaddled over to the Dims by the time ObamaCare was voted on by the Senate and the Maine sisters, and all Republicans, voted against it.

263 The same thing is happening in WA, except that we already had our primary and a conservative by the name of Dino Rossi won, but the guy who crowned himself "the tea party candidate," Clint Didier, is refusing to endorse Dino. Clint says it's because Dino isn't a "true conservative" and won't sign on to Clint's demands. Did I mention that the latest Rasmussen poll has Dino up by 2 against Patty Murray (the Dem. Queen of Pork)? Clint's diehard supporters (read: Ron Paulites) are claiming that they won't vote for Dino because they want to teach the Republican party a lesson. Great. Thanks.

264 Not Vitter, due to that infidelity thing, but someone like Vitter, minus the hookers.
Interesting because there is a lot of buzz/blog press about McConnell being in trouble. Yea, Vitter is done (as in Ensign). Need someone a little more t.v. friendly.

Tom Coburn, who is a doctor, and conservative, and does charitable medical work (remember the ethics complaint some douchebag filed because he donated his medical services to pregnant women who had no health insurance) might be a good choice.

265 I gave $10 to O'Donnell after she picked up the SBA List and Tea Party Express endorsements, and now I have regrets after seeing these videos. This dirty, thuggish behavior is something I cannot abide and I regret that I supported her.

I still don't like Castle, but this is simply out of hand.

272 Ace,, you are right. And the Tea Party does itself no favors backing someone who can not win. They need to pick good, strong candidates, otherwise they hurt their cause.

Posted by: Terrye at September 02, 2010 04:23 PM (/4D/H)

273 It'd be better to have a RINO in Delaware voting with the GOP most of the time, someone like Scott Brown, rather than a Democrat who will vote with Democrats 100% of the time. Have to take your victories where they are and as they come. That's politics. It's not always black or white.

Posted by: William Teach at September 02, 2010 07:04 PM (7yTel)

274 WTF Ace? You keep repeating that Castle is a RINO? Bullshit. He is a liberal democrat running as a republican. For gods sake man, I get strategy and all that crap, but have some principles. As the weirdos at Redstate.com say, "Vote conservative in primaries, republicans in elections". I can't believe you are endorsing a cap and trade, pro gov run healthcare jerk like Castle. You can call him a RINO all you want, you still endorsed him. I'm telling Mark Levin on you, you fucking asshole!

278 Well how many so-called pure Conservatives complaining about Castle actually live in Delaware? Leave it up to the voters there and worry about your own state. As for O'Donnell she's probably not even a Conservative. The only even remotely Conservative values I've heard her espouse are the social ones. She's obviously not fiscally conservative, she can't manage her own finances. I've never heard her mention the second amendment. And she seems as dumb as a box of rocks. Personally I think she could care less about the Tea Party and Conservatism, she just wants to have that cute little job in Congress so she can be on TV more often....scarey thought there...to me it's like voting for Meghan McCain.

When we are looking for a job, at first we should prepare a proper cv (Curriculum vitae) or resume. A resume should be made in relevant with the kind of job we are applied.Do not ever use same cv or for all of kind of jobs. The requirement for engineering of course different to accounting, forexample. But remember, each company has an own recruitment procedure.

When they actually move to their new homes that was built by home builders ocala they need to get a good mortgage ocala and of course buy some nice furniture ocala

377 Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
