16 Here's an excellent item from Toby Young's blog on UK Telegraph:
Why have Western feminists been so muted in their criticisms of Iran?
excerpt:
Hillary Clinton lost no opportunity to brandish her feminist credentials during her campaign to become the Democratic Party’s Presidential nominee in 2008 and even went so far as to blame her failure to beat Barack Obama on the “glass ceiling”. Unfortunately, the concrete ceiling of Ashtiani’s jail cell hasn’t inspired any comparable rhetoric. All she has said is that she’s “troubled” by Ashtiani’s case.
At least Hillary Clinton was able to bring herself to mutter this mild rebuke. No other prominent feminist has spoken out about Ashtiani’s case, unless you include Yoko Ono who has signed the petition calling for her to be freed. We’ve heard nothing from Germaine Greer, nothing from Gloria Steinem, nothing from Jane Fonda, nothing from Naomi Wolf, nothing from Clare Short, nothing from Harriet Harmen.
We know why, of course. Almost no one on the left, with the honourable exception of Christopher Hitchens, dares to breath a word against any Islamic country for fear of being branded “Islamophobic”. Thus, a brutal dictatorship is able to torture and murder thousands of innocent women, safe in the knowledge that the self-styled keepers of the West’s conscience will remain silent.
The left has always had a blind spot when it comes to the abuse of human rights in the developing world and no one is more guilty of this myopia than the women’s movement. The political economist Amaryta Sen pointed out 20 years ago that in some parts of the world millions of women were unaccounted for, as David Aaronivitch reminded us in his Times column this week:

In China there were 107 men to every 100 women. In India it was 108 and in Pakistan 111. For whatever reason this meant that something like 100 million women were simply missing.
So what happened to these women? Aaronovitch’s column is so good it is worth quoting at length, particularly as it’s behind a paywall:

Probably they’d been killed at birth, died completely avoidably in childbirth or been denied the same rights as males to medical care. In their recent book on women in the developing world, Half the Sky, the American writers Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn write about how girls in India between the ages of one and five were 50 per cent more likely to die than their brothers. “More girls have been killed in the last fifty years precisely because they were girls,” they say, “than people were slaughtered in all the genocides of the 20th century.”
In certain cultures and countries, women are more or less enslaved, traded by their fathers to their husbands and held in place through lack of education, enforced deference or threats of violence. Kristof estimates that there are annually some 6,000 “honour killings” (ie, murders of women wanting minimal rights) worldwide. As many as three million girls and women have been coerced — as opposed to recruited — into the Third World sex industry. Much of this enslaving of village and country girls has the effect of reducing social pressure in sexually conservative societies. In the worst sense of the word, it is hypocritical.
Weirdly, when Sen or Kristof and WuDunn or Time magazine point this out, the reaction of some in the West is to accuse them of a colonialist mentality. One woman Cambridge academic said last week — from the very belly of female free speech and free agency — that the “affluent West” had “little to offer Afghans other than bikini waxes and Oprah-imitators”. A British critic of Half the Sky demanded: “Why are we so wonderful? Our society is still just as sexist, albeit in more subtle ways, than the burka-enforcing Taleban. Working on a farm and producing your own food is a far more viable and healthy option that slaving in a sweat or sex shop.”

What are those Russikes up to?

Russia says deployment of S-300 systems in Abkhazia are purely defensiveMOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) – Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday
that the deployment of the S-300 air defense systems in Abkhazia does
not represent a violation of Russia's international obligations, RIA
Novosti news reported.

"As to the S-300, this air defense system is an integral part of
military equipment deployed at our military base in Abkhazia, which is
intended solely for defensive purposes," spokesman Andrey Nesterenko
said.

The Abkhazian base sorely needs this system to fend off attacks from the Georgian Air Force.../sarc.
DEBKA (I know, I know), posted an article postulating a side-bennie from deployment of the S300 here would be to stop an Israel strike from the North (remember that the Israelis were training with the Georgian armed forces prior to the Russian invasion in 200. Combine that with the news that the Russians plan to fuel the Busheir reactor next week, and it makes one wonder...

23 We have the opportunity right now to change the direction of the economy forever. To end the problems we face and yet it doesn't happen.

The biggest challenge facing our continued survival as a free-market economy and democracy is the way our economy is structured. The structure of our economy guarantees that government will always spend more money than it receives in taxes and that means, sooner or later, our economy will be destroyed and we will have to accept living under the "benign dictatorship" of the liberal ruling class.

This is it. This is the one issue; this one doom we must face as now the spending has gotten to a point where the near-term destruction of our economic society is now the future we face - a darkness into which we are being driven by the liberal-progressive movement. Don't kid yourself - either game works for them; they love stealing what isn't their money and they love the idea of a dictatorship because when the economy falls, they will be the only ones with wealth, so they see themselves as the ones who will be calling the shots in the new dictatorship.

Why is this?

It comes down to how we pay for government; we screwed up and decided to use taxation and that was the biggest mistake possible.

Not because we hate having our money taken for no reason we value (though that is a legitimate reason to be sure)...

Not because taxation allows government to play God with our property and decide who has prosperity and who has indentured servitude (though that is a legitimate reason to be sure)...

Because it can't be made to work - it's the logical math thing, stupid...

3,000 years of human history have shown us that fiscal spending (in a representative form of government) is an unlimited activity. The people who make the decisions on spending (Congress) have no compelling reason to reduce spending - they aren't paying for it.

Fiscal spending is an unlimited activity.

Taxation is a poor choice because you can only tax so much. Taxation is a limited resource. If it was an unlimited resource we wouldn't have $13 trillion in national debt - taxes would pay for all our spending.

This hasn't happened. In fact, the gap is getting bigger and bigger.

Taxation is a limited resource and using a limited resource only means failure as the unlimited spending can no more be reduced than you can stop the rising tide with a broom. It won't work and history is replete with governments and empires that all died because they spent themselves to death.

Since we know we can't possible control spending, we need our own unlimited source of fiscal spending - we need an unlimited funding resource. In our economic society that means investment-income derived from equity investments, because; equity investing is an unlimited resource activity that is not inherently inflationary. Equity investing also carries within itself the very poison that kills spending and reverses the growth of government.

That's right. If we stop paying for government using taxation and replace it with the investment-income model government will actually shrink and the national debt will be "automatically" paid off - without anyone suffering want to make it happen.

If you want to change the outcomes you have to change the game. As long as we use taxation to finance government our only future is one of suffering and suffering can't be freedom.

Cambridge City Council to MIT: Halt Layoffs

A local story in Cambridge, Massachusetts illustrates the sense of entitlement that government officials have adopted under the Obama administration.

The Cambridge Chronicle reports that City Councilor Marjorie Decker is not amused with the behavior of her subjects over at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Commissar Decker and the Cambridge City Council issued a fiat in April ordering MIT to maintain full employment, "to halt layoffs and any cuts in hours, salary or benefits for employees."

37 Here is an interesting news item about a serial killer who's been targeting Blacks in several American states. He's Israeli -- and an Arab Christian.
An Israeli man was arrested in the US where he is suspected of stabbing 20 people, killing five of them, in a three month campaign of violence across three states.
The stabbings happened on average once every four days in the US since May.
Victims have been mostly black and police suspect they were racially motivated.
The suspect was arrested at Atlanta airport as he was about to board a flight for Tel Aviv.
A judge has charged Elias Abuelazam, 33, with assault with intent to murder in connection with one of the stabbings.

The Rancho Cordova measure would impose a $600 annual tax per square foot of indoor cultivation of 25 square feet of marijuana or less and a $900 per square foot tax if the indoor growing area is more than 25 square feet. The city tax would cost a local indoor grower $6,000 a year on 10 square feet of pot plants and $15,000 for 25 square feet. Outdoor growers, who would be billed at a lower rate, would pay a $1,200 residential tax for 25 square feet of marijuana plants.

Was he? I never played the game. I always assumed he was infected because there was no breath at the end, but people have tried to explain that away.

if you loved the film, the game is a must play (holds up quite well).
To be fair, they did leave it open a bit by you never coming across Mac's body. But the way that Childs body was displayed made it kinda obvious that he was infected at one point.

76 Hey Ace! Quit yer whining, knock back 1/2 a case of Valu-Right, find, kill and scalp a Scandi hobo. You'll feel better and be back in form real quick.

Doesn't MacReady give you the helicopter ride to safety at the end of the game?

78 >>>Ace, if you really want a lot of comments start a discussion John Carpenter's The Thing. Was Mac or Childs infected at the end?

Neither.

>>> Whose shadow was on the wall?

You mean when the dog comes in the room? I always guessed it was the stoner, what's his name... damn I used to know his name.

Palmer?

>>> Who gets infected and when. This topic has started giant internet debates before. Why not here.

I don't know on this last part because in the beginning before they take precautions and keep together the alien could have infected multiple people; they could have been sleepers since an early infectation.

You know what's a weird question which I didn't even know was a question?

If you're infected, do you KNOW it? Do you know you're an alien, or does it not disturb your brain at all so you think you're human?

I didn't even think this was a question-- i think of course it knows. It's a chameleon.

But apparently there's some kind of internet argument about that.

79 Yeah, do you know you're infected is up for debate, because depending on who is infected when there may be people who make decisions that would be terrible for a thing to make.

A lot of people think Palmer. But the rooms don't match up in terms of photos on the wall/not on the wall, and location in the hallway, and the fact that whoever it was was sitting at a desk as opposed to Palmer's laying down in bed with the tv blaring and smoke billowing. It could easily be Norris or even Blair.

Posted by: ChicagoJedi at August 13, 2010 05:21 PM (WZFkG)

80 Blair didn't get infected until much later. Maybe Norris.

85 President Barack Obama is heeding his own advice to American vacationers, taking his family to the Gulf Coast this weekend to help the sagging tourism industry. The president will arrive Saturday and spend just over 24 hours in the Panama City, Fla., area, a quick jaunt in contrast to the family's upcoming 10-day vacation to Martha's Vineyard, known as a destination for the wealthy and privileged.
White House officials dismiss questions about the length of the family's stay, saying that has no relation to the president's commitment to the region's recovery.
"The president is deeply committed to the folks in the Gulf region," said White House spokesman Bill Burton. He said Obama wants to ensure the people of the Gulf Coast are "made whole again after what was a terrible catastrophe."

86 why is it that MSNBC assured me with every 15 point drop under Bush's watch "wall street is LW6090 Maurers Yuda Altın Çilek Radian Masaj Kremi FX15 Renuee Red Pepper Gel Pepper Time Ozon Yağı Longda rejecting administration policy" but the market going down like Jeanna Fine the other day was no reflection on barry?
