The Game: Who Goes Nazi?

The Anchoress had a recent post based on a Harpers piece from August of 1941, written by Dorothy Thompson, "Who Goes Nazi?" It's a parlor game where you look at the people around you and decide who would join the Nazis in a crunch. Of course when Thompson wrote this, it wasn't merely a game - she had seen it played out several times in real life. And in today's version it doesn't have to be actual Nazis - it could be any ideological cause that's willing to use violence to gain power.

539w.jpg

It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of ones acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi. By now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many timesin Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.

And then she begins to go person by person at an imaginary cocktail party and analyze whether they'd go Nazi or not and why:

The gentleman standing beside the fireplace with an almost untouched glass of whiskey beside him on the mantelpiece is Mr. A, a descendant of one of the great American families. There has never been an American Blue Book without several persons of his surname in it. He is poor and earns his living as an editor. He has had a classical education, has a sound and cultivated taste in literature, painting, and music; has not a touch of snobbery in him; is full of humor, courtesy, and wit. He was a lieutenant in the World War, is a Republican in politics, but voted twice for Roosevelt, last time for Willkie. He is modest, not particularly brilliant, a staunch friend, and a man who greatly enjoys the company of pretty and witty women. His wife, whom he adored, is dead, and he will never remarry.

He has never attracted any attention because of outstanding bravery. But I will put my hand in the fire that nothing on earth could ever make him a Nazi. He would greatly dislike fighting them, but they could never convert him. Why not?

Beside him stands Mr. B, a man of his own class, graduate of the same preparatory school and university, rich, a sportsman, owner of a famous racing stable, vice-president of a bank, married to a well-known society belle. He is a good fellow and extremely popular. But if America were going Nazi he would certainly join up, and early. Why? Why the one and not the other?

It's a long but worthwhile article and just more proof that the people's basic nature hasn't really changed much at all over time. Read til the end to find out her conclusions on the type of person who would and wouldn't go Nazi.

nazigame3456.JPG

If I were to play the game today, I'd be willing to wager that a good many of the current political class in Washington would go Nazi (some actively and some passively) and sadly that includes some GOP-types. And no doubt Spencer Ackerman and many on Journolist would jump on the bandwagon - although based on some the emails it seems they're not even waiting for actual Nazis to show up before they start bashing in skulls, rhetorically speaking of course.

I would also be willing to bet that anyone with real religious faith would have a much easier time ignoring the siren call of the Nazi cause.

L.A. Times Writer: Lets Have Another National Conversation on Race
No, let's not. Having grown up in the South I've been subjected to all too many 'conversations on race'. Of course it's never a conversation at all - it's merely a public opportunity for whites to admit their racial wrongdoings and receive the conditional forgiveness of any black people present while the organizers preen. If I never go through another one until the day I'm finally killed by the homeless, it'll be too soon.

VDH: A Weird Sort of Depression

But as far as clothing, housing, basic transportation, and appurtenances go, our poor are the 1960s rich. For about $2,000 one can buy new clothes at Wal-Mart, get into a Selma subsidized apartment, and buy enough food and furniture to experience what the once wealthy thought was their own monopoly.
To suggest all this is seen as either lunatic or reactionary, but it is true.
We have Dickensian statistics, but we are not London of the 1850s or even Fresno of 1965.

At a tea party meeting last night, we had someone with connections to Homeland Security who put us in the know about a mosque here in Savannah at 34th and Drayton Streets, called Mas Jid Jihad.

Al Qaeda agents are in and out of there. We are surrounded here by three military installations, Ft. Stewart, home of the 3rd ID, Hunter Army Airfield, and Parris Island/Navy/Marine Airfield. Plus, the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest in the nation.

What could possibly go wrong?

But the recent developments in the capital suggest some of them might

A similar controversy involving centenarians emerged in 2005, when a

ministry's list of the 100 oldest citizens at the time, was found to
have been missing for more than 40 years. The ministry stopped
releasing the annual list the following year.

62 I've been re-reading William Shirer's Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, so this question of "what would you have done?" has been percolating with me for a while. There were a handful of Germans who showed extraordinary courage but depressingly, the vast majority just accepted the eviland looked the other way. Don't know if it was somethinginstrinsic to German culture or kind of a universal reaction. After seeing how docile the press and most of the public has been about Comrade Zero's outrages, I've become very pessimistic about the whole thing.

93 At a tea party meeting last night, we had someone with connections to Homeland Security who put us in the know about a mosque here in Savannah at 34th and Drayton Streets, called Mas Jid Jihad.Al Qaeda agents are in and out of there. We are surrounded here by three military installations, Ft. Stewart, home of the 3rd ID, Hunter Army Airfield, and Parris Island/Navy/Marine Airfield. Plus, the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest in the nation. What could possibly go wrong?

You better believe when something does happen, our political class will be shocked and appalled, wringing their hands and wondering howthey can preventthe Muslims who worship at said Mosque from being victims of "Hate Crimes."

The Danner Go-Devil boots were awesome though. Tough as hell, warm in the winter, aggressive tread on the soles for traction, lots of ankle support etc. Not as iconic as jump boots, but much more practical for a field soldier.

Loved how the kid was able to get almost 100% pure plutonium into his home and build a nuclear bomb all by himself without keeling over from massive radiation poisoning.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta)

Plutonium is only dangerous if it gets inside your body. It's an alpha-emitter and alpha particles are blocked by your skin. Since your skin is already dead, no damage. Of course, one TINY particle of Pu inside your body... Yuck. But you can carry around a nice big chunk of metallic Pu with no problems. It'll be warm to the touch - just don't eat it!

----

Huh. I just checked the infallible fount of knowledge (wikipedia) and there's this..

Plutonium is more dangerous when inhaled than when ingested. The risk of lung cancer increases once the total dose equivalent of inhaled radiation exceeds 400 mSv.[87] The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the lifetime cancer risk for inhaling 5,000 plutonium particles, each about 3 microns wide, to be 1% over the background U.S. average.[88] Ingestion or inhalation of large amounts may cause acute radiation poisoning and death, however no human is known to have died because of inhaling or ingesting plutonium, and many people have measurable amounts of plutonium in their bodies.[83]

The "hot particle" theory in which a particle of plutonium dust radiates a localized spot of lung tissue has been tested and found false such particles are more mobile than originally thought and toxicity is not measurably increased due to particulate form.[85] Several populations of people who have been exposed to plutonium dust (e.g. people living down-wind of Nevada test sites, Hiroshima survivors, nuclear facility workers, and "terminally ill" patients injected with Pu in 1945-46 to study Pu metabolism) have been carefully followed and analyzed.

These studies generally do not show especially high plutonium toxicity or plutonium-induced cancer results.[85] "There were about 25 workers from Los Alamos National Laboratory who inhaled a considerable amount of plutonium dust during the 1940's; according to the hot-particle theory, each of them has a 99.5% chance of being dead from lung cancer by now, but there has not been a single lung cancer among them."

I just got learned!

147 give people an insulin boost that increases the risk of diabetes

AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

(beats author to death with a shovel)

Diabetes is genetic, there are more than two "types," and what is commonly referred to as "Type 2" (several conditions actually) is more closely associated with inheritance than Type 1, several genes have been identified (they usually have to be defective in combination for the condition to express), and people who actually SPECIALIZE in studying Diabetes know this - your local quack may not and reporters definitely don't.

The general public believes that diet causes Diabetes, and it drives people who actually have studied the subject bonkers. Real clinical studies show the genetic link and no significant diet link, including the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (Dr. Saul Genuth pointed out that most (75%)"prediabetic" cases don't ever progress to diabetes).

Concordance among identical twins of an "abnormal glucose metabolism" (broader definition) is 100%.

Quoting from Junkfood Science:

In this day and age, I still get patients who
believe that they developed diabetes from eating too much sugar, said
Dr. Gerald Bernstein, M.D., of New York City and former director of the
Beth Israel Health Care Systems Diabetes Management Program. Bad eating
habits such as too much refined sugars, empty carbohydrates and
fructose do not cause diabetes.

It is at *least* as important that people don't assume that they can protect themselves from a genetic inevitability with diet as it is that they don't hurl abuse at people whose condition is a result of the same genetics, no matter how much or little junk food they ate.

Of course, if you DO have Diabetes, eating that junk food may well do you in - but it didn't CAUSE the condition any more than eating Nutrasweet caused mongolism in the children who ate it - a "fax lore" rumor in the 80s.

Other than that, Rand did okay. The Food Guide is not only political bullcrap and just plain wrong, it can't possibly make sense to try to set up one diet for all people - we're the most genetically diverse species on the planet, and that doesn't even consider activity levels, temperature, nutritional deficiencies based on environment or availability of certain foods, etc - all of which affect what you need to eat.

We've also adapted to a wide variety of diets, which is a good thing given how narrow our diets were for most of our history.

Sorry, junk science makes me break out in rants.

166 Some cases of juvenile diabetes (IDDM) have also been thought to have had some kind of viral component.

Posted by: runningrn at August 03, 2010 11:12 PM (CfmlF)
I sometimes don't cover everything when I madly rant, sorry. Blood sugar problems can definitely be temporarily caused by viruses and probably permanently. Viruses are seriously wierd shit, one they never identified came out of nowhere and (it is strongly believed) beat the crap out of my heart a few months back. Hearts heal slowly, it sucks badly, but they tell me it'll almost certainly heal - no idea how long. At least there's no dead tissue, they think there's no permanent damage.
Anyway, in the "Type 2" category, probably 60% of cases are "controversial" in some way, no one is really sure what caused them - especially with the routine hair-trigger diagnosis and treatment these days. There are also some obscure causes that are known genetically - a rare condition where people have zero adipose tissue (no muscle fat, only organ fat) has a 100% diabetes rate. Makes a kind of sense as sugar is how the body transports fat, including to the muscles. That 60% is more highly associated with genetics than height is, but it's not 100% and there's still a lot of ignorance there. No, I'm not a doctor, don't treat me as an authority, etc. I'm just a compulsive researcher and the last few months of spare time to do the math on the science has pretty much destroyed what little faith I had in the general practice of medicine, 'cause so much of it seems to be based on mythology.

169 I heard on the radio today that the Obamas don't give their children birthday or Christmas presents. Quotes came from interviews during the 08 campaign. They claim to spend lots of money on birthday parties so no gift from Mom and Dad. Apparently Santa can bring a "seasonal gift" but no gift from Mom and Dad at Christmas, I mean "Seasonal" - which usually happens around December 25th each year.
Didn't I read about a big birthday party for the President? How come he expects people to give him a gift by paying to go to his party but he doesn't give gifts to his own kids?

180 also, let it be known that based on votes cast in democrat and rethuglikkkan senate races so far, the votes are almost party line for prop c. so turnout was the key here.

187 I just finished mentally playing the Nazi game, thinking of my friends I see most often -- the ones I get together with weekly for board games. Let's see:

Z: works in media, with an academic background, collects weapons. Would probably be a genuine brownshirt Holocaust-denier Nazi right now but is nonwhite and so is a fire-doesn't-melt-steel moonbat liberal instead. (Same thing, different logo.) Prime material for the Party.

Y: single, middle-aged, self-employed, well educated from an affluent family. The kind of person who believes every single word ever broadcast over NPR. However, not hate-filled enough to go Nazi. Would just cluck sympathetically every time someone disappears.

X: married with kids, history buff, solid lower middle class; real backbone of the nation type. Would go Nazi in a second -- for X politics is like sports fandom and X wants to root for the winning team.

Pretty depressing, really. When the shit hits the fan my friends are the people I should watch closely.

Posted by: chemjeff in texas at August 03, 2010 11:25 PM (3JDMi)
Nobody knows it because it's more fun to blame people than to do actual research. Hell, I know it's easier to be snarky on a blog than substantively rebut someone, especially for the third time. A bad diet would not change the disease or course of the disease if it was genetic (and as I pointed out in my 2nd msg there's a little wiggle room there, but not much), BUT you can certainly affect your health, lifespan, etc. by eating foods high in carbs (esp. simple carbs) IF you have abnormal sugar metabolism (Diabetes and similar conditions). In other words, if your blood sugar goes haywire when you eat a lot of carbs, don't eat a lot of carbs. Atkins may be for you.Unfortunately, most nutritionists and the Diabetes Mafia (kinda j/k) recommend diets with way too much starch for many Diabetics, and there's a lot of mythology out there. It gets very complicated very fast - I had some very wierd blood sugar stuff going on when I was sick - my A1C and fasting blood sugar were both high, and the same number (translated) - which dropped to normal very quickly afterward. I'm on medicines that affect my blood sugar now so I can't do very good testing, it's a secondary concern now anyway.A consulted endocrinologist wants to do testing when we're done with the heart, thinks it was mainly the virus but way more needs be done to tell.
Not a doctor, don't listen to me, yadda yadda yadda.

Jane, Morons are ahead of the curve and knew this on 9-11. I actually think the rest of the country is waking up and fast, though. With the idiotic honor killings making the news more each day and the formerly non-political reading blogs, I hope that we can hit the breaks long before we get to the infestation the UK has. One report today, I think it was Dennis Miller, said that about 80% of survey respondents were against the NYC mosque. When's the last survey that got 80%?
He also suggested NY construction workers drop pig bones at every corner of the foundation, take photos and commence with the bldg. Pix would then be sent to that nice imam upon completion, and a new one would be sent every couple months to remind him what they're sitting on.
I think the construction workers should also take bacon sammiches every day.
Howeva, if you saw Bill Kristol on Bret tonight, he was quite agitated about the whole thing and is predicting it WILL NOT be built. He says they won't be able to find NY guys to work the site and no banks to hold the $$.

I thought you were talking about the one where he breaks down and
cries (before they flee) and Maria has to bail him out and sing with
him. I do like this scene too, because the Countess figures out Maria
is in love with The Captain as she stands rapt while he sings.

Both times they sing it are lovely, the last is definitely better-- but this is the 1st one I could find. I was able to find the entire movie here, though the description is in another language. Anyway, I would say the copyright people removed a majority of the other segments from YT.

Special Bulletin. I saw it at some point on cable, years after it originally aired. Interesting in that they made the anti-nuke protestors the terrorists. Also because the whole format of the movie was through a TV news broadcast. (Hence the title). I believe you can watch it on Google video.
There was another movie they aired late night one Halloween back in the 90s with a similar format called Without Warning, about an alien attack of the Earth. I'd like to see it again sometime, since I didn't catch it all the way from the beginning.

That whole thing was just ridiculous. Tim LaHaye and that other dude tried to imitate Clancy, not knowing only Tom Clancy can write like Tom Clancy. The first two books were okay, but then the series degenerated into a mish-mash of garbage.

But guess who has nearly the whole series anyway? Thanks Mom and Stepfather.

317 I can assure you, Don Draper would never go Nazi. He likes making money and banging broads too much. He also doesn't like having a boss.

I wanted to discuss yesterday's episode more, but we had a troll infestation that screwed up the ONT.

It was hilarious when Peggy's new boyfriend said he wanted her first time to be special. ROFLMAO.

And Don not doing the hot (horny) nurse next door, even when drunk, but
doing his secretary. I don't know about that. And Don would have handled
it better the next morning, too. Although the secretary might not have
understood the 'bringing me my keys' metaphor.

And I too thought that she was typing her resignation, although it looks like she was just blowing off steam.

And I wonder how Don will react to a little Don-in-the-making trying to do his daughter when he finds out?

376 The Nazi Party Game:

Wife: Apolitical Squish who votes Republican because Reagan was a Republican (see Mother-in-Law below). Would just keep her head down and stay out of trouble. Not a candidate for Party membership, but might be amenable to membership in an innocuous looking front group, e.g. the Greyhound Rescue Bund or something like that.

Mother-in-Law: Fugitive from Romania in the late 1970s, i.e. when Romania really really sucked. Definitely not a candidate for membership, in a Buddhist-Monk-With-An-Attitude-And-A-Jerrycan-of-Gasoline sort of way.

Father-in-Law: Deceased. Proud owner of an unregistered hand gun in NYC. Also from Romania. Not a candidate. Currently a reliable Democrat voter, however.

Father: Retired submariner, gun-owner, considered voting for Barr instead of McCain. Do you really have to ask?

Mother: More conservative than father, but with no known proficiency with firearms. Which is probably a good thing, since she can really hold a grudge without you knowing she is holding a grudge. Not a candidate for membership.

Bio-Father: Out-and-out moonbat. One of MSNBC's loyal viewers. Relative of several deceased members of the Genovese family, one of whom made it to the top rung (at least in public..they played a bit of a shell game with their upper management). Definitely a candidate.

Sister: Twice-divorced spendthrift who can't say "Palin" without a sneer. Probably already in the Party.

Uncle and Aunt: Nice middle class folks who were quasi-hippies back in the 60s but are so reticent about their politics, I am not sure they even have any. Slaves to Grandma (see below), so they might reject the party just on that basis alone.

Uncle: Left home at eighteen, and after seeing the world, is now one of the better known nature photographers. Maintains his own Eagle's Nest in one of those fascist Colorado ski towns. Total utopian moonbat, with all the trimmings. The sort of guy who bitches about the poor design of his American rental car and extols the European equivalent. Pines after a woman who found somebody else. Upon arrival and seating at a wedding, whispered, "I hope Obama wins." Already a member of the Party, and one with a four digit number on his Party Card.

Grandma: Will never die. Loves her MSNBC and hoarding random objects. Thinks George W. Bush is Satan. Crosses out his face when it appears in her newspaper. Cracks the whip daily on the nice Uncle and Aunt. Frequently feuds with neighbors over picayune property disputes. Would probably join the Party if they could move her property line three feet. Otherwise, would not deign to join the Party.

"Fine, you decadent moron." I thought. "Move to someplace that does, you have a wide variety of choices".

Yup. The military is nothing more than a jobs program for nations like Germany. There was a story Drudge linked too last year saying that 80% of the people in Germany's military were overweight, and it wasn't because they were so muscled that it skewed their BMI scores.

What is considered a high latitude? Houston has a latitude of 30N, and a corrected magnetic latitude of 39N, according to the site. IIRC, 60N definesthe Arctic circle.
OK, just found their Kp Maps of Midnight Equatorward Boundries and it looks like 50N latitude is about the southernmost limit. SOL Texas.
BTW, funny how auroral activity and aerola activity could be freudianly interchanged.

543 Good Morning MMs

Who goes Nazi? Interesting article, I read the whole thing. Some of the chosen appeared to be pure stereotypes of the early 1940s, others not so much. For example the historian in today's environment rather than be the defender of American values is more likely to be the Communist/Nazi. With a few modifications that article could be very powerful indeed.

On the "Let's have a conversation on race"

No, let's not. Having grown up in the South I've been subjected to all
too many 'conversations on race'. Of course it's never a conversation at
all - it's merely a public opportunity for whites to admit their racial
wrongdoings and receive the conditional forgiveness of any black people
present while the organizers preen. agree that they should pay homage to all the country's blacks and agree to any punishment meted out as well as the fact that blacks should get preferential treatment in all things.

Believe it or not that is exactly the contents of the last "diversity workshop" that I attended taught by two blacks.

On the VDH "poor"; this is something that conservatives have been saying for a long long time, especially when the communists touted their favorite theme of the "rich getting richer". I saw a chart and article once that compared three classes of people, the lowest 1/3, the middle 1/3, and the top 1/3 of America and Europe. The lowest 1/3 of America had a life style and standard of living equivalent to the upper middle 1/3 of Europe and they did it for the most part at the tax payer's expense. If that is not an indictment of European socialsim I don't know what is.

Food advice: Don't believe any of it anymore; whether from the government or any other busybody group. Instead remember what they said 100 years ago. Eat sensibly and in moderation.

And those boots on the guy look more like something one of the Moronettes would wear.
