WikiLeaks Founder On Release Of Names Of Afghans: Eggs, Omelets And All Of That

Oh and by the way, the Afghans that help the coalition are probably criminals anyway, so if the Taliban kill them, well, whatever.

Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblowing website, told The Times he would "deeply regret" any harm caused by the disclosures. But in an extensive interview yesterday he defended his actions.

He claimed many informers in Afghanistan were "acting in a criminal way" by sharing false information with NATO authorities and said the White House knew informants' names could be exposed but did nothing to help WikiLeaks vet the data.

Mr Assange insisted any risk to informants' lives was outweighed by the overall importance of publishing the information.

"No one has been harmed, but should anyone come to harm of course that would be a matter of deep regret -- our goal is justice to innocents, not to harm them," he said. "That said, if we were forced into a position of publishing all of the archives or none of the archives we would publish all . . . because it's extremely important to the history of this war."

...Mr Assange told The Times many Afghan informants, including those whose details had been potentially disclosed, were "telling soldiers false stories . . . creating victims themselves".

Asked if that justified releasing their identities, the former computer hacker replied: "It doesn't mean it's OK for their identities not to be revealed."

And yet, he did. Assange is a despicable excuse of a human being who either already has or likely will soon, have blood on his han

Those on the left who cheered this release really need to be held to account for what they supported. Andrew Sullivan, the various members of the Glenn Greenwald Collective, members of the MFM and the like need to be held accountable for what they are supporting...the exposure of those fighting against the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

I know they will demure and say that there should have been some controls in place and that Assange should have exercised more caution and they are sure he will in the future but we need the information and on and on.

Bull.

This is what you get when activists who aim to hurt this country take it upon themselves to substitute their judgment for those charged with making these decisions. Own it guys...blood and all.

Related: Since the CIA isn't going to 'take care' of Assange, Iowahawk is trying to bring Assange to the attention of people who will by releasing a number of interesting items including this...

Even tho I'm an atheist, I'm deeply troubled by Julian Assange's continual insults of Islam, his own former religion.

More at Iowahawk's Twitter feed.

Added: Spencer Ackerman is comfortable with false claims of racism against conservatives and throwing them through glass windows. What he's not all that comfy with is the idea of legal action against Assange.

I'm tempermentally uncomfortable with prosecuting leakers or leak-recipients. Not sure how far to take it

Behold liberals and their priorities.

19 This is what happens when wannabe secret agents play at being an intelligence organization.  There are reasons why intel information is kept secret and protecting the identities of human sources is PARAMOUNT among those reasons.

Apparently Assange doesn't understand, or worse, is such a narcissist that he doesn't care about that fact.

Here's a little piece of advice Julie- if you want to play in the intel game you have to learn to check your ego at the door.

It's only a matter of time before people start dying because this tool thinks he didn't get enough attention as a child.

Last nite at a party, I had a dandy argument with a liberal on just this subject. Feckless little maggot went on a rant about our "unconsciously mercenary killers exercising no restraint toward civilians"--if I recall some of it. It took a concerted effort NOT to spread him on the floor like peanut butter, and he won, in that I was too fucking mad to be coherent.

I'm sure y'all realize this is an effort from the left to portray the military in the worst possible light (war crimes, anyone)? Sad thing is with this DOJ, the theme will get traction.

26 It's time to revisit the definitions and penalties for treason.

My feeling is that Osama Obama was in this up to his eyeballs. Despite assertions to the contrary, it seems very unlikely that the White House would have "missed" the Assange documents (assuming the little shit was telling the truth) unless a) it approved of the release or b) gave them to Wikileaks in the first place.

Once again: no other president would have survived this possibility. Or much of what the Traitor-in-Chief has done to this country.

So, yes, go after Assange with (metaphorical, maybe) guns blazing. But those who supported and enabled him should should be subject to the law and its penalties as well.

Uh... Repubs?????? HELLLOOOOOOOOO!!!! ANYONE HOME????

"IF" the Whitehouse was given the opportunity to vet this information, then they also had to have a way to contact this guy (and note, the media seems to be able to find him).  They COULD have stopped him, but apparently did not even try to disuade him from publishing.

Now, if you know of the release of classified material, and do nothing, you are an accessory... and even if not prosecuted, will have your clearance IMMEDIATLY stripped from you.

Where is the investigation into what the Whitehouse knew, and when did they know it? (its like the Lockerbie bomber Administration Letters, where they lied to us, and the MSM gave em a virtual pass on it).

Dear Wormwood,
It seems that you have been doing well in branching out and acquiring more Patients. This Assange fellow is a perfect patient.  He, like so any others of his ilk, are prime for our work.  Nothing hides our agenda better then a self-righteous man. In fact, it is a key component at Tempters' Training College for young demons that the newly hatched seek the self-righteous as a first patient.  But remember, nephew, the Enemy is ever present so make sure that your new patient is never tempted by the thought that any of his actions are evil.  No, instead insure that he believes that the evil is anyone who tries to defer him from his course by the presentation of facts, of the need for scruples in his work and most importantly never let him think that he is responsible for anything that happens to another man.  No, nephew, that must always be someone else's fault.

Keep these three things in mind with this Patient and he will be in our Father's service for eternity.

83 Where does Assange live?  His address and phone number should be public information.  Photos of his house.  If possible, anonymous tips about his daily schedule.  If he has children, their pictures and where they go to school.  It's time to fucking get serious.

Liberals always talk about how much we can learn from other cultures.   It's time we learn from Islam.

84 So the White House was actually supposed to help release this classified material?  Sorry, I won't even fault the Obama Administration for refusing to give this guy a tacit approval for what he was doing, even with various bits redacted.

Actually yes, you may disagree with the Pentagon Papers decision, but that is law. If a journalist wants to release classified information that is newsworthy, they can, period. Classified material is marked as a general guide to the threat to national security if it were to become public. But if documents are leaked, and newsworthy, specific threats to US interests help a "responsible" journalist make the decision on what information should be omitted, and perhaps the document as a whole should. I know many who have an unqualified faith in the classification system would argue that the word CONFIDENTIAL should be enough. But I do sympathize with the other side, the arbitrary stamping of a word by government on a document should not make it illegal to publish. If Assange actually sought help from the WH in order to protect US interests beyond his intended story, and the WH declined to assist him, then they don't have an argument for criminal liability on his part.

I may not like the guys politics. I certainly think as a human being he had a responsibility to, in the absence of help from the WH, make the best judgment possible with the partial picture he had to protect lives and overarching US interests. As a human being he is a total and utter failure. But, I can assign no criminal liability for what he did, if he asked for help and was ignored.

My suggestion - contrast them with UN peacekeepers. Something like;

War crimes? Mercenaries? The most amazing thing about the American military is its ability to fight a difficult war against an inhuman foe is its ability to respect the norms of war to a degree never seen before in history. In fact we have been losing hundreds of men every year because we have put such a tight reign on their ability to fight.

Now, contrast this with UN peacekeepers, who can't help setting up child prostitution rings in the myriad countries they fail to keep the peace in...

So are we against collateral damage or not? If we give a shit about Afghans then let's actually go to war, all out war, not "be really careful" war.

Not sure about anybody else, but I'm all for reducing collateral damage whenever possible, with one simple caveat.  Not if it endangers the lives of our own troops.

If we can reduce collateral damage without putting our own troops lives at greater risk, great.  If not, well people get killed in a warzone.  It's unfortunate, but it does happen.  And when your dealing with an enemy that hides among civilian populations and uses them as a sheild, well then this is the fault of the enemy.  Plain and simple.

1/ Although this asswipe guy seems despicable, Journalist have a long history of rationalizing their acts of treason. Really all he did was give the NYT a trailblazer so that they did not have to be the first ones to publish.

2/ I save my greatest enmity for the guy that stole and handed him the documents.

3/ Liberals have a way of always finding the silver lining in acts taht are disastrous to the country, their safety, our troops, our econmy, etc. (9/11, problems in Iraq, treasons leaks, ...) Is this what it means to have no soul?

People have been pushing this tripe for a long time, but it's clear that it is nothing more than a joke.  Pretty much every bit of classified information is "newsworthy".  That's why it's classified, in the first place.

This argument that journalists should be able to determine, on their own, what is in the national security interests of the US and what isn't, is one of the craziest defenses I have ever heard in my life.  By this, any Soviet spy could have transferred all of their information via a "journalist" (anyone publishing a pamphlet with the information would qualify) and it would all be legal, with the transmission to the Soviets having taken place.  That is, clearly, insane.

Many are going to continue to claim that "journalists" have the right to make determinations of what US national security demands and the "journalists" will continue releasing sensitive data (and being backed by many in their "journalistic endeavor" LOL) until the public has really had enough of this idiocy - which has no basis in logic or reason, at all.

How did this freaken idiot ever get elected?

An uninformed electorate that had no idea how radical he truly was, even though many of us spotted him coming from a mile away.  They relied on feel good sound bites about hope and change and closed their eyes to everything else.  A complicit press corps, that hid Obama's radicalism and lack of experience, that conspired to discredit anyone or anything that would prevent him from winning the Presidency.

And then of course the Republican primaries, where they nominated a candidate that most of us who are conservatives were completely disgusted by and who, if he had been elected, probably wouldn't have been much different from Obama on many issues.

Add to that a concerted effort during the entire previous eight years by the mainstream media to paint Bush as evil incarnate, and shazaam!  You get a one term Junior Senator with absolutely zero executive experience vaulted to the Presidency, and just a year later you have the greatest nation in the world placed into a suicidal nose dive from which we may not be able to recover.

94 If I understand correctly the NYT put him in contact with the WH as far as vetting information. Legally, I think -- and INAL -- working through the NYT would make Assange a journalist, with all the accompanying protections. Thus the WH would have had the responsibility of telling the NYT and Assange what to redact. They did tell him to protect US personnel but for some reason didn't think of the Afghans. MikeTheMoose is right -- as contemptible as the little pussy is, he probably has not done anything you can convict him for. Manning is a different story, and deserves to sample the pleasures of Fort Leavenworth's shower stalls on his knees.

I would just note that something along these lines had occured before.  Not a campaign rally, but Jesse Jackson, during the 1984 campaign, decided that he was in charge of US foreign policy while he was in the Presidential race and skooted down to Cuba to get the release of a bunch of criminals.  Yay.

Of course, Jackson should have been tossed from the race and jailed, just as the Indonesian Imbecile should have been tossed from the race after his rally in Germany.  But, all McShame could think to say about that was that the Indonesian was a celebrity ...

How did he have access to this data?

From the research I've done thus far he's a US Army intelligence analyst.  It would appear he's also a traitor of the highest order, a reprobate who's conduct is beneath contempt.

Were there no checks and balance's or restrictions on data dumping?

Apparently none that were effective enough to stop him prior to leaking the data, but sufficient to provide evidence that he's the culprit responsible.  With any luck they'll convict this slimy cockroach and imprison him for the rest of his miserable life.

B. He buys the coins but that doesn't mean you should.

BTW
40% on buying coins of any type from a coin dealer is pretty 'typical'. I have seen many dealers charge up to 100% even for common low value coins. Go ahead, go buy a 1964 silver quarter fair condition. It's worth little more than the silver in the coin, buy it from a dealer you will pay twice it's value.

If you are buying a product, and you knowingly let yourself get steered to the product that you know the salesman makes the most money on, that's not some nefarious plot, that is you being box of hair stupid.

Er ... you do understand the need for classified information, right?  Free and open society doesn't mean that that society can't have any spy organizations or covert operations.

There are alternatives to just publishing information, you know.  Like taking it to some other arm of the government, where it is still kept secret unless a determination is made (not by journalists) that it would not be harmful to the nation on release.

You are taking a stupid liberal ruling (not unlike abortion or Kelo or any other piece of stupidity to flow from the SCOTUS) and trying to argue its merits.  There are none.

I DO NOT TRUST JOURNALISTS with US national security.  Even if they were well intentioned, they are friggin' journalists - i.e. idiots.  If you trust journalists with making the most important judgments of national security, then ... I don't even know what to say.  Maybe you'll get lucky and the journalists' desire to have global warming stopped (a national security issue, according to the "journalists") will end up in global government to get the US in line.  Yep ... gotta trust those journalists.  They know what's best and always have our nation's best interests at heart.  Yep ...

I sure do, and have probably held higher clearance than most here, and I am well aware of a strong habit to over-classify sensitive material. Let's put the shoe on the other foot. Let's say someone leaks something highly embarrassing to the Obama admin about their plans to convert the US to socialism; Marked CONFIDENTIAL, you would hand it over to Pelosi? Good call, I'm sure it will get all the attention it deserves.

The Supreme court decision was simply the Government could not arbitrarily suppress information through classification; I do agree with that decision.

However, a "journalist" who has come into contact with classified material does have a responsibility, even if he believes it contains a good story, not to aid the enemy or endanger US soldiers in its release. Morally I think Assange missed the mark by a mile, deliberately. But having contacted the WH (if he truly did so) I think legally puts him in the right. Even if he is a slimeball.

130 ... and those agrevating circumstances ...

According to the translation, Mullah Omar’s five-point directive reads:

1. Fight coalition forces to the death without withdrawing or surrendering; attempt to capture coalition forces whenever possible.
2. Capture and kill any Afghan who is supporting and/or working for coalition forces or the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
3. Capture and kill any Afghan women who are helping or providing information to coalition forces.
4. Recruit anyone that has access to coalition force bases and have the ability to collect detailed information about coalition forces.
5. Purchase or obtain more heavy weapons such as rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and anti-aircraft machine guns.

Points 2 and 3 are a dramatic about-face for the Taliban leader. In the summer of 2009, Omar issued a Code of Conduct for Taliban forces that explicitly commanded his shadow governors and other Taliban leaders to do the opposite.

What do we call that for short?  Torvoldist?   No, something like that... willing to kill innocent civilians to attack America?  Narrowist?  That doesn't seem right either.

Look, no classified documents should have been released. But if he was going to release documents, who the hell was forcing him to release all of them or none of them? How about choices like redacting information or not releasing all of the information? Any person with a  conscience, even if they were misguided enough or dumb enough to release the documents, would certainly realize that releasing the names of informants, their locations and their families names and locations serves no useful purpose unless you're a terrorist or terrorist supporter (but I repeat myself).

Was something apparently so important that it wasn't worth this fucking assholes time to read what he was releasing. Fuck him. Bring the weight of the law down on him, the leaker and anyone who stood by and allowed it to be released.

Julian Assange should be thanking whatever god or gods he believes in that I am not responsible for coordinating his capture. For a fellow that spends a lot of time online, he should know that the NSA can eventually find anybody.

Once he's found, then it's a matter of getting his computer passwords. I would bet a fair sum of money that he will run out of pain threshold before I run out of parts of him to damage. Yes, it's some ugly Sicherheitdienst shit to really torture someone that badly, but just getting his face wet won't do it. Wonder what he'd give up to keep the use of all his typing fingers or his only pair of eyes.

Once I have his passwords, it's just a matter of digging in his e-mail in-boxes. Nothing is ever erased completely on the Internet, and I can find some smart people to handle that part.

Then once we have what we need, his body is found in a hotel room in women's clothing with a heroin needle in his arm. What a shame.

136 Why is there no real discussion in the MSM about apprehending this fucking asshole?
Are you kidding?? He's one of them.

Where is the action from the WH?
Again, are you kidding?

Do the states have to do everything?
Yes, in fact they do. And then they get sued by Eric Holder and the DOJ.

137 You say 'despicable' , I say he needs to be put down ( in the English sense ).

I myself would not harm a hair on his bushy head--as that would be illegal--but if I noticed someone tip-toeing up behind him with an axe & a lunatic grin, I wouldn't say a word to warn him or make a move to protect him

as ye sow, so shall ye reap.........

Eh, me an' my crew knows how to handle rats.

Two behind the ear, trunk of a Lincoln at long term parking in JFK, bada-bing, bada-bang, bada-boom.

Done and done, time to go get some scungili from Valerio's.  Yeah, on 54th.  Best in The City.  Fuckin' fuhgeddaboudit.

139 If someone in the Obama administration had this and either didn't respond or okayed its publication, they should be sharing a cell with Assange.

At least until the incessant high-pitched self-congratulatory whining drives them plumb out of their wits.

I am really truly sickened by this. The so-called peace movement knows full well that it aligns itself with brutal dictators, murderers and thugs against those who would stop them - the lies about peace are for our consumption.

They're not anti-war, they're just on the other side - Anyone else remember Evan Sayet? Explained pretty well why the insane left keeps backing the worst over anyone else.

143 Julian should remember his own history in Melbourne. And recall how generous the authorities were following his arrest for compromising governmental systems in the 80's. Now he appears to be seen by some as a messiah of freedom of information. Please people...look into his history in Australia, you will see he is ego driven and has always had russian and eastern european connections. Anyone that was around in the days when he created "strobe" would know this by the company he kept and the tales he told. Julian does what he has always done, perpetuate his own ego to the detriment of others.
