The Most Dangerous Countries in the World

Here's an interesting infographic showing the most dangerous countries and regions in the world.

Bottom line conclusion: Steer clear of the usual hellholes and probably Colombia and South Africa as well.

Federal Unemployment Benefits Extended - Is That a Good Thing?
Today the House passed the extension and now federal benefits will again continue for 73 weeks beyond the state's 26 weeks. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand it does help people who are jobless and in need including some of the regular morons. So at the individual level it's a good thing. But at the macro level it pushes us faster into insolvency and may be actually extending the recession by keeping the labor market from adjusting to new circumstances. So I'm conflicted.

And this chart showing the median period of unemployment over the last 50 years shows why the extension is so critical this time around:

NYT Finally Admits Trickle-down Works
Inadvertently and 30 years too late:

“The economic recovery has been helped in large part by the spending of the most affluent. Now, even the rich appear to be tightening their belts. Late last year, the highest-income households started spending more confidently, while other consumers held back. But their confidence has since ebbed, according to retail sales reports and some economic analysis.”>

Nicholas Cage: An Acquired Taste That Very Few People Have Acquired
Well that's Neo-neocon's take on Cage. I'm not quite as down on him as she is - he was good in Raising Arizona and deserved to win an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas. But he's also been in a lot of bad and/or forgettable movies. I do think he can act but he only works well in certain kinds of roles - mostly the ones he's decided not to take in the last decade or so. And he needs to take a break from trying to be an action hero. And then you have the hair thing. Plus here's the Nicolas Cage Career Aging Timeline.

What Celebrity Are You As Tall As?
I'm pretty sure we can all beat Danny DeVito and Tom Cruise. But what about Ben Stiller and Julia Roberts? And who knew that Charlotte Bronte was a little person?

Inside the Nitrous Mafia, an East Coast Hippie-Crack Ring
Nitrous oxide AKA Hippie Crack has long been popular at hippie music concerts. And with each balloon of N2O going for $5 to $10 and a tank supplying 350+ balloons, it's possible to make over $300,000 at a single festival. With that much money involved it's no surprise that thuggery and the Nitrous Mafia have appeared.

Dick Cheney's Black Heart Has No Pulse
Well not since he received a ventricular assist device which because it pumps continuously usually leaves recipients without a pulse. According to some of the commenters this is what they give people who are waiting on a heart transplant. So Cheney may be going full android soon.

The Glamorous Divorce Ranches of the Mad Men Era
Until the mid 60's the most feasible way to get a divorce in America was to go to Nevada. Unlike other states they required no evidence of cruelty or adultery and would issue a divorce decree with no waiting period. However the catch was that you had to have been a resident of NV for at least six weeks. So an entire industry of ranches and hotels soon sprang up that catered to women waiting out the residency period. For many of the women it was the first time they had ever been out west or lived alone.

Orca Porn
Reason #47 why you don't want to work at SeaWorld:

“Early in the morning, the animal-care crew would take hot-water-filled cow vaginas and masturbate the males in the back tanks,” says John Hall, a former scientist at SeaWorld. “It was pretty interesting to walk by.”

We've had clients call to ask if their divorce was final as they're at the altar in Vegas.

Don't worry too much about it. The lower judges know this case will be appealed all the way to the end regardless of who wins or loses, so they can be free to do or say whatever they want because they know they won't have the last word.

244 I did some digging: I think that infographic data comes from Nationmaster.com, which has a weirdly limited pool of countries for kidnapping data. USA, Russia, China, Mexico, India, Colombia, Argentina, etc. aren't in the pool. Hence the strange prominence of the UK.

The USA rate is 6.7 kidnappings per 100,000 people; UK is 5.5 per 100K.

So, yes, the UK has a high kidnapping rate -- if you ignore a lot of other countries.

315 Shucks, in the mating season here in Florida, many of the critters
attempt to take up residence with you and that's not disgusting. What
is revolting is the constant thumping of their wings as they sex each
other.

I remember being in Orlando one September and there were these reddish bugs everywhere. Stuck together and mating as they flew.

A very large green beetle landed on my purse at Disneyland. It was large enough that when it flew by me I could feel the breeze from its wings.

372 I don't know if you Southern and West Coast M M's have these or not. We have the 17 year cicada. Every 17 years, in this corner of the world, we are invaded for about 2 weeks by this 2" noisy ass, red bug-eyed flying cicada. They mate, lay eggs in the bottom of small tree branches they have sawed a hole in with their ass saw and die. The bodies are so profuse there can be a 2 to 4" deep ring of them around the base of a tree. Also the rotting corpses stink just a little. The eggs hatch. The pupae fall off the branch and burrow into the ground for the next 17 years only to rise / screw / and die somemore.
If this sounds like BS check with any of the North East Morons. They are so gross one guy robbed a restaurant by threating a waitress telling her to give money or he would stick it on her.

463 The cicadas only PEAK every 17 years. Some of them can't read a calender and some come out every year. Summer in Ohio isn't complete without the cicadas chirping along on a hot July afternoon.
And Japanese beetles. They eat my roses and birch trees. They are due to show up any minute. It's fun to set out a beetle bag trap and look into it after about a week. It's full of hundred of live and dead Japanese beetles crawling all over each other. The live ones, that is. No dead zombie beetles here.

The Gatorbowl is a throwdown! Folks in Florida love football almost as much as the folks in Texas, and the FL/GA game is the mother-of-all sporting events here. Our stadium, forever known as the Gatorbowl, is home to the Jaguars who, even with thousands of 'covered' seats, still can't sell out a game. Yet, for the Gatorbowl game, the end-zone club has to be converted into additional seating by adding bleachers.

It's a big small-town and when we hosted the Superbowl a few years ago, the out-of-towners said we had the best fireworks show they had ever seen.

Glad you enjoyed your visit!

Would a cute story cheer you insect haters up?

A couple made a deal that whoever died first would come back and inform the other of the afterlife. Their biggest fear was that there was no afterlife.
After a long life, the husband was the first to go, and true to his word he made contact, "Mary. Mary."

"Is that you, Fred?"

"Yes, I've come back like we agreed."

"What's it like?"

"Well, I get up in the morning, I have sex, I have breakfast, off to the golf course,
I have sex, I bathe in the sun, And then I have sex twice.

I have lunch, another romp around the golf course, then sex pretty much all afternoon. After supper, golf course again. Then have sex until late at night.
The next day it starts again."

Oh, Fred you surely must be in heaven."

"Not exactly, I'm a rabbit on Cape Cod."

548 >>I did have five sisters, though, and a lot of cousins.

Oh.My.

Gator.. this is for you!

An extraordinarily handsome man decided he had the responsibility to marry the perfect woman so they could produce beautiful children beyond compare.

With that as his mission he began to search for the perfect woman.

Shortly there after he met a Redneck who had three stunning, gorgeous daughters that positively took his breath away. So he explained his mission to the Redneck and asked for permission to marry one of them.

The Redneck simply replied, "They're lookin' to get married, so you came to the right place. Look 'em over and pick the one you want."

The man dated the first daughter.

The next day the Redneck asked for the man's opinion.

"Well," said the man, "she's just a weeeeee bit, not that you can hardly notice.. pigeon-toed."

The Redneck nodded and suggested the man date one of the other girls; so the man went out with the second daughter.

The next day, the Redneck again asked how things went.

"Well," the man replied, "she's just a weeeee bit, not that you can hardly tell... cross-eyed."

The Redneck nodded and suggested he date the third girl to see if things might be better. So he did.

The next morning the man rushed in exclaiming, "She's perfect, just perfect. She's the one I want to marry."

So they were wed right away. Months later the baby was born.

When the man visited the nursery he was horrified: the baby was the ugliest, most pathetic human you can imagine.

He rushed to his father-in-law and asked how such a thing could happen considering the beauty of the parents.

"Well," explained the Redneck... "She was just a weeeee bit, not that you could hardly tell... pregnant when you met her."

This coming weekend.

I had to book a room today so I could go. No way am I gonna try to drive 100 miles home on a Saturday night while buzzed.

Most rooms in Santa Monica seem to start around $300 a night.....IF you can find a place that'll let you book a single night (most require 2 or 3 night minimums on summer weekends). Found one at less that 200 bones, but it took awhile.

Left work pissed off about it, until I passed a couple of cars with Obama stickers still on them. Flipping 'em the bird while passing at 80mph does wonders for my mental equilibrium.

One of the women sticks out her hand for the other woman to see, and
in her
long southern drawl says "Look at this ring my husband gave me. Isn't

nice?"

To which the other woman replies, "Oh that's nice, that's real nice."

The first woman then says , "And just last month he took me on one of

The second woman again replies, "Oh that's nice, that's real nice."

"Well sweetheart doesn't your husband ever buy you nice things or
send
you nice places?"

"Oh", the second woman responds, "When we first got married
he did send me to etiquette school."

"Why'd he do that?" the first woman asks.

To which the second fine southern woman replies, "Well you see,
before,
when someone told me about the jewelry their husband gave them, or the
trips
he sent her on, I would have just said I don't give a fuck, but now I
say that's
nice, that's real nice."

A man who lived in a block of apartments thought it was raining
and put his
hand out the window to check. As he did so a glass eye fell into his
hand. He
looked up to see where it came from in time to see a young woman
looking down.

"Is this yours?" he asked.

She said, "Yes, could you bring it up?" and the man agreed.

On arrival she was profuse in her thanks and offered the man a drink.
As she
was very attractive he agreed. Shortly afterwards she said, "I'm about

to have dinner. There's plenty, would you like to join me?"

He readily accepted her offer and both enjoyed a lovely meal. As the
evening
was drawing to a close the lady said, "I've had a marvelous evening.
Would
you like to stay the night?"

The man hesitated then said, "Do you act like this with every man you

Still, much prettier now than she was in her 20's and 30's. I hope to look half as good at her age.

729 Guess not.
Did anyone else notice that Gaza is listed seperately on the terrorist list? It also ranks a lot higher than Israel. I was under the impression that Gaza was a wholly owned subsidiary of Hamas. If correct that puts a bit of a dent in the whole "noble freedom fighters opposing the nasty Jewish invader" meme.
Unless I just remember wrong of course.
On the unemployment deal. A lot of people forget that long unemployment with lengthened benefits can become a vicious cycle, or self-fulfilling prophesy. I recently saw a statistic, and don't remember where, that most people find employment only in the last week or so of their benefits. If they are trained to wait and the benefits will simply be extended there's not a lot of incentive to look outside their comfort zone.
Another factor is where is the money coming from. Last time it was supposed to come from increases in unemployment insurance. Besides what ever non-obvious results there will be from de-linking risk and payments, as with healthcare, noone appeared to ask themselves how employers were supposed to pay more for people to not work and still pay for those who did.

And Leo didn’t die in that……damn, there went my theory.

Actually, I hated that movie. I read the book in college in the mid 80s and, like many movies based off a good book, the movie did not do it justice. For example, Leo’s character spent about 4 years in a Turkish prison which, at best, could be described as living hell.

746 William F. Buckley was a big fan of Jane Austen, so I'd say it's man-permissible. In his Blackford Oakes spy novels, there was a lot of Austen-talk between Oakes and his girlfriend who was an English professor studying Austen.

1995's Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth is the best Austen adaptation out there. (I am still unable to actually read the source material, much as I try. For shame.) There was also a good BBC SS miniseries adaptation that was pretty good. Not sure if that is the one with Rickman as Brandon or a different one.
