Obama Recess Appoints Romantic Redistributionist

Continuing his pattern of bypassing Congress when he can't get his way, President Obama recess-appointed Donald Berwick to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services this morning.

What makes this so egregious is that the Empty One didn't even wait for the Senate to reject Berwick. They hadn't even scheduled a hearing yet because Berwick never bothered to fill out the questionnaire sent to him.

Obama knew that Berwick would have an uphill battle to win confirmation. He's an inexperienced, wide-eyed socialist who talks fondly of the "romantic" British health system and the "humane" need to make wealth redistribution an inextricable part of a national healthcare system.

Senators have expressed concerns about statements like these, as well as Mr. Berwick’s background. He is a nominee with little management experience poised to head the second largest insurer on the planet, an agency with more funding to disperse than all but the top 15 economies in the world. In fact, the White House’s decision to make this recess appointment is as much a demonstration of their unwillingness to have any debate about Mr. Berwick’s views occur in the public eye as it is of their concern that some in their own party have privately questioned whether he is outside the mainstream.

Obama is making another end run around Congressional advice and consent. Recall that during President Bush's last years in office, the Democrats in Congress held pro forma sessions to keep him from making recess appointments. At the time, they justified it by claiming that appointees should have "up or down votes." Uh huh. There's not a peep from Democrats today.

Update: GOP leadership responds.

More [ace]: Video: Berwick announces that "men with plans" are good at dictating health care policy, whereas market forces are not to be trusted.

Men with plans.

The Wall Street Journal carried this story at the bottom of page 4, about four column-inches of blather which mentioned nothing about Berwick's stonewalling Congress, or the failure even to schedule a hearing - not to mention his lack of executive experience or his infatuation with collectivist healthcare.

I think it was the Instapundit who pointed out that the Obama administration is principally a journalistic scandal: the widespread, conscious journalistic malpractice that ensured a malinformed electorate.

21 Just amazing. Obama has abandoned any pretense that he is anything but a hardcore statist/Marxist and anti-Constitutionalist. It's an "in your face" posturing that we're being subjected to on a daily basis. The scariest aspect of all of this is that it's becoming clear that his strategies are based on that deeply ensconced rancor he harbors towards this country and most of its citizens. This presidency has mushroomed into a full-blown American tragedy.

72 I have a serious question that anyone can feel free to answer.

How will our side ever win in the long run given the following facts?
First there are wo pressupositions, Not all Republicans are on our side, but for the sake of argument lets just say they are. Also, I think it is fair to say that the Democratic Party, specifically the leadership is permanently leftist, and all of the "moderate" democrats will vote with the leadership. Also because of the format of primaries, it is unlikely a "moderate" Kennedy-like democrat will ever be nominated for the presidency.
Republicans can't and won't control both Houses of Congress and the Presidency forever. Whenever a Democrat gets into the Whitehouse they are able to implement irreversable policies.(See: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Healthcare, Welfare, Public Sector Union contracts, bureaucracies, etc). It is a fact that after Obama, other Democrats will win the house.
Even worse, is when their is a Republican in the Whitehouse, they are usually compromised by the Democrats when they control one of the Houses of Congress. See Bush 2000-2002 and 2006-2008.
So my main question is, how can we ever expect to win when our steps are plodding and incremental, and their steps are velocious and sweeping.
We sue to ensure the Second Amendment is a individual right. It takes decades, two Supreme Court decisions, and still the governments of Washington, D.C. and Chicago create laws to circumvent the decisions.
The Supreme Court passes Roe v. Wade and it is unquestioned law in all states and cities, including the Red states. So a right not in the constitution is accepted whereas one that is in the constitution is to be circumvented by any means possible. (

Lest you think I am pro-life with an ax to grind, I am not, but I am simply making the point that the left's advancements are unquestioned and unstoppable, whereas our attempts to re-affirm the rights promised to us by Nature's God(or just nature if you prefer) and the clearly written and explicit protections of those rights in our constitution are stopped, questioned, and turned back.
Was Heller and McDonald a big move forward? Yes. Is there anything stopping a liberal supreme court from over turning them? No. Was Roe v Wade or Kelo v New London a big move forward for the left? Yes. Would an conservative Supreme court ever overturn them? No.
There are countless examples to go into.
I just don't see how we win in the end. I'm sure a President, Senator or Congressmen will help stem the tide, for a while, like Reagan did, but the tide of history seems to be against us, at least in America.
How long did Reagan's Revolution last? 20 years? 30? Is it fair to say its mostly dead? Sure the idea of low taxes remains, but what else does?
As you can see I am pretty dispirited, it doesn't mean I'll give up the fight, it just means I think we are fighting a rearguard action.

Any takers care to change my mind?

86 Ben - the democrats have figured out that they can get elected on making BS promises to an electorate that, by and large (let's say 52%), is lazy and stupid. The democrats promise the government will fix problem X and problem Y with new government programs that are "deficit neutral" or worse, "reduce the deficit."

The electorate, with the collective attention span of a gnat, agrees. Then we as a nation get saddled with a new government program that delivers crap at a high cost. The problem is, the electorate that benefits from the crap now wants to keep it, no matter what the cost to the country as a whole. And a pile of crap beats nothing at all.

Democrats have realized how this works.

What do Republican's do? Hard to say, other than letting this Democrat Ponzi scheme implode and say "I told you so." I hope there's a better option out there to convince the electorate that socialism and big government won't help.

Maybe if they picked up a history book, they'd learn the travails of the USSR, Cuba, and North Korea. But Lady Gaga and iPhone apps are much more appealing these days.

This is so true. I have a couple of dear friends, friends for many decades who are mega libs. They are currently mad at Barry because he is way to moderate for their taste.

These are intelligent, educated, sweet people who are, in their political views, basically children. They want things that have never been, and can never be, and they will vote for anyone who promises to deliver them.

After their new heroes let them down, as they must, they don't review their premises, they simply move on to the next charlatan who promises to deliver the undeliverable.

Excellent post Ben.

This is the problem. We are a nation that despises monopolies yet we allow two parties to monopolize us. Think about this. There are two gas stations in one town. They engage in pricing wars, lose money trying to gain customers. Then one day, one of them gets the bright idea, that if they unite against their common enemy- the customer- they can keep prices high, improve margins, and both survive quite nicely. And so they do. The customer gets hosed.

The only way to stop this is to build a new gas station. A co-operative built by customers for customers.

The existing station owners (the Dems and Repubs) scream like little girls. They try to convince everyone that a third station is a ridiculous idea. They apply pressure to existing customers by raising prices and threatening to thwart any attempt at building the new station with their rhetoric and war chests. Eventually, the customers grow weary of all this work, frustration, and confrontation and they give up the idea. They continue to pay inflated prices while the two existing station owners grow fat on them.

That is American politics. That is the illusion that one party is better than the other. They both suck badly. We are getting hosed. But as long as a shitload of peeps believe this is the only option we have, these two parties, we will continue to get what we have gotten.

131 As a one time community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, our current leader was successful in manipulating single parent black women, so to speak.
That is his model for governance.
If we look at his successes on the South Side he had with Valerie Jarrett (none!), we can then understand how he perceives the electorate, and the rest of the citizens.
He wishes to reduce the independnet fishermen and other businessmen of the Gulf Cosat to dependent ninnies, which is why he dawdled on the oil well leak. This is not by accident. BP is the pimp daddy here, and is playing along.
Berwick is just another pawn to be moved on the Great Bureaucracy chessboard to consolidate power. It would never occur to Obama and his regime to actually come up with a legitamate man or woman for the job, because that is not the essence of the goal Obama is trying to reach. He is basically daring the fates to stop him, and he may succeed. What if, there is not electoral upheaval in November? It hasn't happened yet.

And the two Harvard professor positions listed on his White House biography as well as another position as a senior scientist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston are essentially "honorary professorships," which require two or three seminars or meetings a year, The Washington Times has learned.
-----------------------------------------------------
All I can say is that this nation has an extremely large appetite for anti-American fraud coming out of Washington. Otherwise, there would be loud calls to have the Ineligible Imbecile From Indonesian found ineligible in court, as he clearly is, and make some effort to actually save this nation before it splits apart. But, no. America seems happy enough to dive into the chasm and enjoy the free fall.

Party game for America, today:

Name one pro-American thing that the Indonesian Imbecile or his Washington junta has done since the ineligible shithead slimed into office.

(Of course, this is a trick game, as nothing benefitting America, or the American creed, has come out of Washington during the usurpment of the Indonesian - but it's fun to watch the leftist scum squirm ... just as they did when the Imbecile hit his 1 year mark and the best the idiots on the left could say about the Indonesian was that he shoved through a wasteful 860 billion in political spending that no one was even allowed to read before being forced to vote on ... yeah, they were really proud of that, which pretty much said everything one needed to know about the despicable, lying scumbags of the left.)
