Andrew Sullivan posted this gem today:
And this is why, despite my own deep suspicion of big government, I remain unmoved by the tea-partiers. Their partisanship and cultural hostility to Obama are far more intense, it seems to me, than their genuine proposals to reduce spending and taxation. And this is largely because they have no genuine proposals to reduce spending and taxation. They seem very protective of Medicare and Social Security and their older age bracket underlines this. They also seem primed for maximal neo-imperial reach, backing the nation-building efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, favoring war against Iran, etc. Only Ron Paul, peace be upon him, extends his big government critique to the military-industrial-ideological complex.
So they are truly not serious in policy terms, and it behooves the small government right to grapple with this honestly. They both support lower taxation and yet bemoan the fact that so many Americans do not pay any income tax. They want to cut spending on trivial matters while enabling the entitlement and defense behemoths to go on gobbling up Americans wealth. And that lack of seriousness is complemented by a near-fanatical cultural alienation from the modern world.
In my view, this confluence of feelings can work in shifting the public mood, as seems to have happened. When there is no internal pushback against crafted FNC propaganda, and when the Democrats seem unable to craft any coherent political message below the presidential level, you do indeed create a self-perpetuating fantasy that can indeed rally and roil people. But the abstract slogans against government, the childish reduction of necessary trade-offs as an apocalyptic battle between freedom and slavery, and the silly ranting at all things Washington: these are not a political movement. They are cultural vents, wrapped up with some ugly Dixie-like strands.
When they propose cuts in Medicare, means-testing social security, a raising of the retirement age and a cut in defense spending, Ill take them seriously and wish them well.
Until then, Ill treat them with the condescending contempt they have thus far deserved.
He left out that most of them like Sarah Palin. I guess that goes unsaid.

65 This is an insult.

He's basically reverse endorsing himself with Rubio.

The time when Rubio could have used this help has long passed. Mitt Romney is basically flip flopping like a slimeball, yet again.

Stay out of it altogether, or speak up when it makes an impact. Now that Crist has totally imploded, it's just pathetic.

John Cornyn endorsed the wrong man, but he was a real leader about it... he paid a price and I respect him for standing up when there was a risk, even though the party funds should not be used to sway primaries.

Romney is proving that he's not a leader. This is ridiculous. Hell, Romney's the guy who got elected bashing Reagan and promising taxpayer funded goodies... he would happily run as a third party or democrat if it would help him win power. He's much more like Crist than he is like Rubio.

Petraeus is a brilliant commander. He's a loyal servant of whatever president there is. When Bush needed a gung ho optimist to save Iraq, there he was. When Obama needed someone to focus on Israel for whatever reason, this soldier obeyed the civilian elected leader.

He is not a prospective president. In fact, it's lame that he is thought to be one. Our bench is so damn light that Romney, Huckabee, and even non politicians who don't even clearly identify as conservatives are our leading candidates.

Romney = Obama or Edwards, Huckabee = Clinton

What in the hell... we gotta dig in for 2010, but after that, it's time for a nice bloody friendly fire fight to get some better leadership.

2006 Election: Crist 52%, Davis 45% (Crist 54%, Davis 46% when 3rd party choices taken out)

Approval when he took Office: 65%
Approval In the State now: 45%

(CNN) Former President Bill Clinton said he sees parallels in the mood of the country now and on April 19, 1995, when the bombing of a federal building in Okalahoma City killed 168 people while he was in the White House.
"Then you had the rise of extremist voices on talk radio. Here you have a billion Internet sites," Clinton said.
The main thing that bothered us since the time of Oklahoma City was that already there was enough use of the Internet that if you knew how to find a Web site - and not everybody even had a computer back then, but if you knew how to find it, you could learn, for example, how to make a bomb."
"Now everybody has got a computer, Web sites are easily accessible. And you can be highly selective and spend all of your time with people that are, you know, kind of out there with you," he continued.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Registered voters are about evenly divided over whether
President Barack Obama is deserving of a second term in office.
Currently, 46% say he deserves re-election and 50% say he does not.
Predictably, Democrats are one-sided for Obama's re-election and
Republicans are one-sided against it, while independents lean against a
second Obama term.

Moreover, since if you earn no income in MA you don't pay for health insurance (its still just Medicaid), how is MA's mandate fundamentally different than an income tax you can op out of by getting your own insurance?

Dorothy's journey can be seen as a young girl's last childhood experience, and when she chooses to return home to Kansas, she has matured into a young woman and has abandoned her childhood world of imagination. 430 Mitt Romney fails some of the easiest tests imaginable.

He's flipped on the most basic and obvious questions about morality and the role of government. There's no way in hell he's anything but a coward and a liar.

He has bashed Ronald Reagan... a man who won 49 out of 50 states in his last election because only the insane didn't like Reagan.

Romney fails the Reagan test, which is the least demanding test imaginable. No matter how you feel about health care or abortion or even basic conservatism, Romney has bashed your point of view at some point.

Today, the Tea Party and Rubio are popular, so here's Romney telling you he is proud to support them and is just like them. Only, Romney didn't say a word until his close friend Crist completely imploded. He's a liar. If you respect this man, something is deeply wrong with you. Just because idiots freaked out about his honorable religion doesn't mean you have to defend him.

Because at the end of the day, Romney would not defend you if there was even the slightest cost to Romney. He wouldn't defend you unless it helps him... in other words, he wouldn't defend you at all, and will do whatever he can to help himself.

If you are a conservative, you hate Mitt Romney. If you are a fan of honor, you can't stand him.

If Mitt Romney had been president on 9/11, our nation would have collapsed. Sounds crazy? It was really hard for Bush to keep things together after such a trillion dollar disaster. Fighting the war was often very costly to his political capital. Do you honestly think Romney would have stayed the course? Of course not.

He's worse than a democrat, because many democrats will proudly defend their flawed policies, while Romney doesn't respect you enough to do the same.

Jesus isn't Satan's brother, Romney is.

In fact, Romney is Satan. His mother smells of elderberries. His father was a hamster. He burns water when he attempts to boil it. He has no respect for your personal bubble and has coffee breath.

He uses women's hair products and has a brazillian.

He looks kinda gay.

And let's be honest, his sweat smells a lot like pee.

Would I vote for Romney over Obama? Maybe. Probably. I'd vote for Carter over Obama at this point. I'd vote for someguy over Obama. I'd vote for Colin Powell over Obama.

I guess I'd vote for this convicted felon who bought pardons from Bill Clinton, too.

About 1,300 people were being held in cramped and poor conditions in offices throughout the small town of Puning in southern Guangdong Province and are forced to listen to lectures on state rules limiting the size of families, the Nanfang Countryside Daily said.
The county intends to sterilize 9,559 women or their husbands who are suspected of planning to have a second or third child. So far about half that number have agreed to comply, the newspaper said.

Romney is not trying to help win in 2010. His behavior proves it. He wasn't there months ago to fight Crist. His assistance for the GOP in 2010 is obviously and laughably self serving. How can he be so selfish when so much is at stake? Because he's always been like that.

Iceland, a nation of 320,000 people, sits on a large volcanic hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge and has a history of devastating eruptions. One of the worst was the 1783 eruption of the Laki volcano, which spewed a toxic cloud over Europe, killing tens of thousands.
An English teacher once recited part of a poem stating that "nature is kind". Sure, pal. George Carlin had a routine with ananti-envirowacko bent where he asked if the people buried inash after the Pompeii eruption felt like a threat to the Earth this week.

523 Mitt Romney still hasn't given a convincing reason that I should vote for him, other than that he isn't Obama.
He inherited his wealth from his father, who was the president of American Motors. Heused some ofthat wealth to run a campaign against Edward Kennedy for Senate in 1994 that fell apart when he conceded every issue to Kennedy in their debate.
He won the MA governor's race in 2002, narrowly, in a good year for the GOP in which they were the incumbent party, mainly because the Democrats had a horrible candidate.
As governor he served as a red stamp for the Democrat legislature. He signed legislation for insurance mandates, including taxpayer-funded abortions, and for draconian gun control (at a time when most of the nation wasmoving away from gun control).
If he had run again in 2006, he would almost certainly have been defeated in a landslide. Instead he made a run for the Presidency. Despite throwing huge amounts of his own money into the campaign, he finished third.
Since then he has used his mouthpieces like David Frum to smear his potential opponents like Sarah Palin. He has also never faced up to the mistake of the Massachusetts health insurance system he signed into law.
The only argument I've seen for Romney is the "Goldilocks" argument: he's not too conservative like Palin, and he's not too moderate like McCain, so presto! he's a "just right" candidate.
The problem is that the Presidency is a job demanding in judgement, stamina, and moral courage. It isn't just a point on a political graph. Reagan was not a great President because of where he lay politically, but because he was willing to fight for it. Mitt Romney shows none of that fighting spirit.
If Mitt Romney is nominated in 2012, he will most likely lose, since he will not be able to make the case for being better than Obama. Even if Obama screws the pooch so badly that Romney squeaks by, Romney's lack of character will guarantee a one-term Presidency, and the end of the Republican Party and the U.S. as we know it.

Don't know about Coleman (well actually I do; McCain didn't give a shit), but Palin herself helped dispatch Ted Stevens. I for one haven't forgotten that. Had she not done this, Stevens might very well have pulled it out, the Dems would never have had 60 votes, and the health-care industry might not have been destroyed.

Valid beef. Palin fucked up on that one. But look over her career. She basically tore apart a corrupt GOP Alaskan house for the benefit of her state. Ted was being wronged by the prosecutor, and Sarah got a taste of that too later on. She made a mistake. Really, Ted Stevens was corrupt even if the case against him was abused. Palin has long been willing to screw her party's bottom line in order to work for a more honest government.

In one sense, yeah, this caused some serious repercussions... we needed his vote. On the other hand, she was acting on principles that make sense. I wish she had been a lot more careful about that... but I think it's not the end of my respect for Palin.

536 FUCK THE INDEPENDENTS

Exactly.
One thing I've noticed is that when the GOP nominates "sensible" candidates who "reach across the aisle," contrary to common belief, they still do well among hard-core conservatives--but they get wiped out among moderates and independents.
Independent voters do not know the ins and outs of politics. They just want a candidate who seems right for the job. "Goldilocks" candidates may be "just right" politically, neither too far to the right nor to the left, but to most independent voters "left" and "right" are meaningless terms; they only see bland candidates who lack any argument as to why they would be best for the job.
Also, when "moderate" GOP candidates vote for unpopular leftist stands like amnesty and gun control, they lose independent votes. After all, if you have a Rep and a Dem both saying "fuck you" on the issues you hold dear, but the Rep is offering you $10 billion and the Dem is offering you $100 billion, you take the more lucrative "fuck you."

I heard you and your lies. Daddy paid for Romney's 1994 run? You
mean the same Romney that owned his own multimillion dollar company for
almost a decade?

Posted by: polynikes"

So he started from scratch? Or was Ken telling the truth, and Romney's wealth which he has used to compete against candidates funded by ordinary contributions, by inheriting it?

You bring up that he's from Kerry's state. In more ways than one.

Mitt Romney doesn't understand small business or normal America. I don't believe in class warfare, but it's a lie to say he's owned a multimillion dollar company in refuting the truth that he inherited his success.

561 Has anyone here been influenced in favor of Mitt Romney by Polynikes's impression of someguy on crack cocaine?

Please, anyone, let me know.

Cause while I think Romney is an idiot who smells like ureic acid, I think Polynikes if a huckbot pretending to support Romney. Either that, or he's just plain terrible at this.

Posted by: Sentient Nintendo 64 at April 16, 2010 05:51 PM (dUOK+)

562 I said Romney inherited his father's wealth. If that counts as his father paying for his 1994 run, I guess it's true. One way or the other, Romney isn't a financial genius.
What's the difference between Mitt Romney and the Gremlin?
One was produced by George Romney, was seen everywhere despite no obvious benefits, and had no staying power. The other was a car from the Seventies.

Dude, your criticism of Ken was completely bashing him for things he didn't even say. Perhaps you're just braindead. You already admitted you are lying about your views of the various candidates, to associate bashing every good one with being a Romney supporter. Why would you do that? Maybe you're totally outside your intellectual weight class and getting creamed. Maybe you're trying to make Romney look terrible. Who knows?

Posted by: Sentient Nintendo 64 at April 16, 2010 05:55 PM (dUOK+)

566 I like Romney. I think he would make a very effective, conservative President. I think he would be one of the best possible choices to run this country in our tough economic times. If he's the GOP candidate I'll vote for him and campaign for him. And his competition for the GOP nod isn't all that great--most of them are either incredibly inexperienced or people who say popular things instead of having a proven record or executive accomplishment.
But THE issue for 2012 is probably still going to be ditching Obamacare. And if it is, I can't support him to be the GOP's standardbearer. Romneycare is too similar.

Well, he took his inheritance and bajoozled it into some hugely successful businesses. If Daddy leaves you 10k and you use it to start a successful restaurant that's worth, say, $200k, is your wealth "inherited"? Not really.
Its OK to admit that Romney has some good qualities. It doesn't mean you are endorsing him or endorsing Romneycare.

581 Listen, I didn't have a whole lot of opinion about Mitt Romney one way or the other originially. Even then, I found it kind of odd to see him compared to Rudolf Giuliani, based solely on the fact that both were northeast Republicans who were, let's be honest, running from their abortion and gun control records. However, Giuliani, who had plenty of faults and whom I did not support, was a political giant who had turned NYC from a hellhole into a great city; whereas Romney was a one-term failed governor and one-time unsuccessful Senate candidate.
What really got me disliking him was the way his supporters started doing everything they could to smear Sarah Palin after the election. I don't come from the "Sarah Palin or nobody" group that worships her, but I do like her and despise people who smear her--especially those like Mitt Romney who let others do the dirty work.

629 Again, I hardly claiming to be God's gift to Mensa here.

But I presented several issues I have against Romney's presidential aspirations. Some of them are damn serious.

And Polynike's rebuttal of that is to insult every candidate he thinks I might like, admitting he's lying about his views on them, and to admit he can't defend Romney at all.

I realize this is like beating a cripple, but his attitude shows he knows he's losing this argument. Romney does too.

Look, we need RINOs. I hate it, but we do. In Mass, Romney and Scott Brown are much better than Kerry or Kennedy or Coakley. I am happy Romney was a much less liberal, albeit very liberal politician to his alternatives.

But he's shifted so far to attempt to pretend to be a conservative that I can't respect him as a man I just disagree with (like Brown, for example). Trust. That's important. Polynike is either failing to defend Romney because he can't, or because he's just trying to ruin his chances. Either way, I'm also happy to see that kind of thing... it's perfect for helping minimize his camp.

681 - I agree with you on Liz Cheney. I have been following her on tv and wishing that she would run as vp or whatever. She is smart, good looking, married, intelligent has 5 children and has her dad's guts. I wish fox would have her on as a contributor on Brett's show in the roundtable. She does not let anyone get away with saying something stupid and would be great in a debate. Could you see Liz and Mitt as running mates, man what great looking candidates. Mitt is a good looking guy and his hair is great. You guys are just jealous. He did wonderful things with the SL Olympics and it is one of the only Olympics that made money and didn't leave the residents of SL with debt. I think he took $1.00. He would do the same with the country and I'm sure would have honorable people in his cabinet.

Posted by: Goldi at April 16, 2010 11:43 PM (rsOPT)

654 Goldi, he did a pretty good job with Olympics, but the Olympics are a lot like a racket.

I think that's to his credit, but there's so much more to his career than this, and it's not clear to me what exactly he did that's so great there... I think their situation was just better in many ways that had nothing to do with Mitt.

Mitt was a failed governor. His policies have destroyed the state and he bowed out of reelection because he had no chance. He's a failed Senate candidate for the same reason. He is handsome, but that's a pretty terrible reason to like him.

When you think about the major aspects of his philosophy that he has completely flipped on, and the wonderful people he has happily bashed when convenient and supported when convenient, such as Reagan, we see he's a dishonorable and unprincipled person.

His executive experience is ghastly failure... he's incoherent on principles... and he's a damn weasel when it comes to thinks like the Rubio endorsement, Reagan, abortion (either way) and many other huge things.

Nobody is perfect, but this is a laughable candidate of very low appeal or skill.

I don't see how someone who really like Liz Cheney can place Mitt Romney at the very front of their list, but that's just me. There are several great choices that simply are smarter on the economy (at least haven't destroyed a state's economy), consistent on principles, and generally honorable. If we pick Mitt, or it it's between him and some even worse option like Huck, I will support him. Stakes are too high. But most other contenders really do blow him out of the water, and I think they are serious enough that they will all join together for one great candidate.

Let's watch Palin and Ryan and see.

One reason why it took Romney so long is that Rubio endorsed Huckabee
in the Florida primary.Posted by: Emperor of Icecream at April 16, 2010 06:05 PM (epBek)
He did a lot more than endorse Fuckabee, he was Fuckabee's Florida campaign manager. I think that may be why Palin has been cautious about this too. She's been praising him and offering to help him for a while, but hasn't really made an "endorsement" endorsement yet.

She made kind of a non-endorsement endorsement of him last week. "I love Marco Rubio. I'll help him in any way I can. Call me Marco", or something to that effect. She was on Laura Ingraham's show a few months ago and talked about "commonsense conservatives like our friend Marco in Florida".

660 I only wish I lived in Florida so I could vote for Rubio.
I don't care what Romney does. I don't think he can beat barry in 2012.
