The Problem With Heartbreaking Health-Care Anecdotes
Actually I don't think it's a problem at all really, it's not the facts that surface from the story, it's the telling of the tale that accomplishes its purpose.
Still, dude.Natoma Canfield, the cancer-stricken woman who has become a centerpiece of President Obamas push for health care reform, will not lose her home over her medical bills and will probably qualify for financial aid, a top official at the Cleveland medical center treating her told FoxNews.com. Though Canfields sister Connie Anderson said her sibling is afraid shell lose her house and Obama warned at an Ohio rally Monday that the patient is racked with worry about the cost of tests and treatment, she is already being screened for financial help. Lyman Sornberger, executive director of patient financial services at the Cleveland Clinic, said all indications at the outset are that she will be considered for assistance. She may be eligible for state Medicaid and/or she will be eligible for charity (care) of some form or type. In my personal opinion, she will be eligible for something, he said, adding that Canfield should not be worried about losing her home. Like every example they bring up, once you dig into it, it's total BS.

Great, but what if she was getting treatment somewhere else? Not all cancer treatment facilities are that magnanimous, and even if they were, the money is still coming from somewhere. The only real discussion we are having at this point is: does the cost come from column "A" or column "B".

Someone on Talk Radio this morning was calling this Obama's "nuclear anecdote", which I thought was kinda funny (but the pathetic health bill ain't funny at all). I'm with Dagny--if this bill is so all-fired important NOW, why doesn't it go into effect (I mean insure anyone) for 4 years? In the meantime, the private sector will help Ms. Canfield get state-of-the-art care at The Cleveland Clinic; one of the reasons she will get that care is because those EVIL insurance companies pay more to the Cleveland Clinic then the govmint programs of Medicare and Medicaid do. This is a bizarre system in some ways, but it is beyond me why anyone thinks increasing government involvement is going to fix anything.

the health care system in america is in much better shape than i thought. i'd already dismissed all these folks categorically since the plight of one individual (however sad) is not a persuasive argument to overhaul national policy. however, the fact that he can't find one legit hard luck case is pretty astounding. i mean, they have 44,000 chances a day; just grab one of those suckers who's dying from lack of health insurance and tell the crowd, "this suckers gonna die today cuz he has no health care. and so will 43,999 others like him!"

We'd better pass ObamaCare now, otherwise many, many Americans will find that their car insurance has been canceled! It happened to me back in Chicago when I was a poor university student and couldn't afford full coverage. Incidentally, my poor roommate was worried about his mother because she was going to lose her house to pay for treatment when she had a really, really, really bad hangnail.

Here's the rest of the story. This woman is now in her 50's. She was diagnosed in her 30's. She either quit or was laid off her job and has been unemployed for 12 years. The house she is so worried about losing was her parents. It's a mystery to me how someone can be without gainful employment for 12 years and not have lost the house long before that.
She was unemployed for 12 years but managed to make 5,000$/year in health insurance payments. When it went up to $8,000/year, she dropped it.

How about this story? My wife shifted out insurance from gold plated to catastrophic. We started taking really good care of ourselves, and didn't use the doctor that much. We saved over 200K over the past ten years and are using the money to put our kids through college.

From their website...Cleveland Clinic is committed to providing world-class care to all patients regardless of ability to pay. Under its policies, Cleveland Clinic provides financial assistance to patients who do not have insurance coverage and who have family income levels up to four times the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.
Patients who have insurance but still need assistance in payment for their medical services are also eligible for consideration.
This program is in addition to any patients entitlement to free hospital care under the Ohio Hospital Care Assurance Program and includes Cleveland Clinic physician services. In the year 2005, the cost of hospital and physician charity care provided by the Cleveland Clinic Health System exceeded $100 million.

As Jake Tapper so rightly pointed out, this bill would no abosutely NOTHING for this woman's condition. In fact, the rationing of health care that will result will probably mean that the cost of helping this cancer stricken woman will outweigh the benefit of extending her life a year or two. Remember: the blue pill, red pill analogy that Obama used. Moreover, the plan would do absolutely NOTHING for all of the other sob stories that Democrats keep yapping about. What will it do? It will saddle our children with debt they can ill afford. It will lead to rationing of health care most likely for all but those children and families of those passing this monstrosity. I am sickened by this whole thing.

I have been thinking about another way they can pass this trainwreck. After the elections, and the Democrat slaughter that will most likely follow, what will stop san fran nan from bringing the bill to the floor again and allowing those lame duck members from voting for it in essence sticking it to the constituents that just voted them out?
