| Overnight Open ThreadGood evening M&Ms. MTV - The first 10 minutesOn August 1, 1981, at 12:01 am MTV: Music Television launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll". And despite just being available to a few thousand NJ cable subscribers history was made. Only a few years later a musician's MTV video could make or break their career. For a case in point see this video. So for your enjoyment here are the first ten minutes of the MTV era. "Campaign Finance Reform" was a lie. When normal people say they favor campaign finance reform, what they mean is they want to stop rich assholes like George Soros from buying up entire political parties in secret.
Legislators used the name "Campaign Finance Reform" for a law which did the exact opposite. It made it easier for rich assholes to hide their campaign donations, and harder for normal people to support candidates. Bury it in the crawlspace. I think what really killed MTV wasn't the format changes -- those were the symptom. The cause was the ascendancy of hip-hop in the 1990s. All hip-hop videos look exactly the same. Even the suburban white kids who wanted to grow up to be poor black gangstas couldn't tell one hip-hop video from another. They stopped watching. And the other kids couldn't stand it at all, so they stopped watching. That left a small handful of nerdy black kids who wanted to grow up to be rappers because they were too nerdy to be actual gangstas, and you can't build a network on nerdy black kids.

The maddening thing about Obama's total ignorance of economics is that the "news" media aren't hammering him on it. They should be asking him questions, like "What the FUCK are you talking about, retard?" or "Are you fucking STUPID?" or "Do you think the American people are as stupid as you obviously are?"
But instead they nod their heads and furrow their brows seriously, and yammer about what a smart President this is, and how his clever economic ideas are totally saving us from the Bush recession. Is there some big annual meeting of media figures that they all attend? I'm willing to chip in for some nerve gas or a truck bomb. Posted by: Trimegistus at February 09, 2010 10:16 PM (OW3Eh) 73

"Back in August of last year, the CBO guesstimated that collections during fiscal 2010 will amount to $2.264 Trillion. That guesstimate assumed a 7.5% increase over the $2.105 trillion collected in 2009, and clearly depended heavily on a revival in private-sector economic growth and employment. Well, economic growth has occurred. The problem is that it's the government that has grown, while the private sector has shrunk. Additionally, according to the Establishment Survey published by Uncle Sam's Bureau Labor Statistics, seasonally adjusted total employment has continued to fall. Thus, CBO dropped its estimate of fiscal 2010 receipts in projections it released in late January to $2.175 trillion. The collections guesstimate in the Obama administration's budget is actually a bit lower:" Posted by: curious at February 09, 2010 10:18 PM (p302b) 80

Ref The Prisoner on AMC. No doubt this is connected with their recent mini-series remake.
The original is one of my favorite shows and you should watch an episode or two if you haven't seen it. The mini-series didn't grab me but I stuck it out and by the end, I was impressed with it. A pure downer philosophically, but interesting and - eventually - entertaining. Also worth a shot the next time AMC replays it. If you read up on Mtv's history it's interesting to find that by '86-'87 people were already sick of music videos and weren't watching Mtv anymore. Journey even released an album called Raised On Radio at that time kind of giving Mtv the finger, thus the switch to reality programming and game shows to try to keep an audience. So Mtv has sucked ass for over two decades now.

Just came in from clearing a fresh, powdery 10 inches of global warming from the drive way. Yeehaw. Really starting to question whether I really love my friends and family enough to stay in this wintery waste land... Combining visual media with music was a bad thing, in terms of maximizing the available talent pool. Ugly people don't have the same shot they used to. Would Mama Cass have a career these days? I doubt it. (The merits of her music not being the main point here) Of course, MTV has gone beyond that and is now just a big fat social blight - a festering pimple on the butt of humanity. MTV was directly responsible for the explosion in sales of stereo TV's, they had them before but until then no one was knocking down the doors to get them. Nowadays you just about can't buy a TV that doesn't have stereo, even the little portable DVD/TV combos have it. I remembered the first video was "Video Killed the Radio Star" but didn't remember Pat Benetar was second. Yowza, whatta woman. Thanks for the memories. Why Sarah Palin is the most powerful politician in the USA.
Doughboy wrote on February 9, 2010 at 10:19 PM, "I don’t think Rahm will be given a pink slip anytime soon. At least not til the Palin Facebook post has faded from memory. The last thing Obama wants is for anyone to think she had any influence in his firing." Obama is pure, bloated, ego. He can't let anytone be seen to influence him, especially a woman. Obama won't do anything that Palin suggests. That's how much she's inside his head. He's hung up, hamstrung and hog-tied. Palin owns Obama. http://hotair.com/archives/2010/02/09/ douglas-wilder-to-obama-its-time-to-clean-house- and-start-firing-people/comment-page-1/#comment- 3244987 Posted by: Looking Glass at February 09, 2010 11:23 PM (LJSfA) 252

#265, to what are you alluding?
Posted by: ParisParamus at February 09, 2010 11:33 PM (oT1aA) From Seeking Alpha. The dollar continues to strengthen, and I am not sure I fully understand that. Of course, there is a knee-jerk response to exit positions in the euro, and at the margin that makes sense to me since any bailing out of Greece would involve a lot of easy money, and any failure to bail out Greece would tend to weaken the union or raise the possibility of its dissolving altogether (this is not something I expect, in the reasonably near term anyway). But selling the euro to buy the dollar? With our deficit, our debt, our leaders' studied insouciance when confronting the monumental task of putting the fiscal house back in order? Maybe what Churchill once said about democracy is also true about the buck: It's the worst (currency unit) around, except for all the others. Well I guess House is going down the tubes. This episode is about a day in the life of Cuddy. Hey writer's the name of the series is "HOUSE". Get a clue. I don't give a shit about a day in the life of Cuddy and turned it after 20 minutes. This is the type of crap that usually fills in a last season. I guess the writers are running out of diseases, ideas or the vain pretentious dunderhead actors are demanding more face time. For example, Hawkeye Pierce has amnesia resulting in a half hour monologue. Elain Nardo gets to show off her dancing and singing skills in the cabbie garage. Jill, on the Tim Allen Show, wants to add dimension to her role during the Randy gets cancer episode. That was a funfilled half hour. Just what you watch a comedy for. At least Tony Shaloub knew it was time to retire Monk. Luckily, I still have the Mentalist and Burn Notice. Posted by: Ohio Dan at February 09, 2010 11:46 PM (rurh0) 301

Log,
I forgot all about Sedaris' movies, but I was very partial to the late 70's soft core like Emmanuel and Felicity. The whole innocent college girl goes to Europe or Hong Kong/Thailand and pretty much gets shagged rotten by everyone. The current skinemax stuff, meh. I just made a sample of the punch I’m doing for my son’s Valentine’s Day party tomorrow and it was so yummy. It is Hawaiian Punch and 7-up and Strawberry ice cream mixed together. Obama's strapped to a gurney and undergoes yet another Palinoscopy. "Drillgate". Sounds painful.
it’s astonishing that the Obama administration is dragging its feet on offshore drilling at a time when we’re so desperate for economic recovery and jobs. It’s no surprise that an overwhelming majority of Americans support offshore drilling: it will provide millions of good jobs and billions in revenue, and it will make us more secure by reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Mr. President, we appreciate you asking for our input. We’ve provided it, so thank you for accepting it. With no time to waste, it’s time to listen to the American people – finally – and drill, baby, drill!" http://www.facebook.com/notes/ sarah-palin/drillgate/293441098434 Posted by: Looking Glass at February 10, 2010 12:09 AM (LJSfA) 368

MTV, Rum, back when they actually played videos. Nothing that you would remember.
MTV played music videos? Really?? Kidding. Although by the time I was old enough to be into that, TRL was on the way out and all the videos were being played on MTV2. Also I didn't get cable until my junior year of high school and by then MTV had pretty much quit playing videos. Posted by: wherestherum at February 10, 2010 12:32 AM (gofDd) 434

"Republicans L. Dean Murray and Michael Montesano appeared to win Assembly seats in special elections on Long Island last night, continuing the run of local GOP electoral success that began in November. Murray, 45, led Democrat Lauren Thoden by 186 votes out of more than 8,000 cast, with 100 percent of election districts reporting. But while Murray and Republicans claimed victory, Brookhaven Democratic chairman Jon Schneider did not concede, saying there are 413 absentee ballots still to be counted. Turnout for both races was relatively low. In Suffolk, the election drew 10.5 percent of registered voters. Nassau's turnout was so light that Jay Jacobs, the state and Nassau Democratic chairman, said officials did not monitor it." A friend sent this to me in an email. He was livid about the absentee ballots since so many times the dems don't want them counted. Posted by: curious at February 10, 2010 12:35 AM (p302b) 440

I don't mean to be a pedantic prick, and I have been called to task before for ranting obscenely about the commenting system, but I have succesfully posted two links, and now the same procedure is giving the GD "long strings of unbroken text" bullshit. I SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO POST A LINK, ESPECIALLY WHEN I HAVE DONE IT CORRECTLY TWICE BEFORE, ON THE SAME THREAD, WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I previously agreed with my critics that it was my fault, but I have followed the same procedure three times, and suddenly it doesn't work. I DON'T THINK IT'S ME. 355 Remember Me!?..Posted by: Scotts' Truck The most powerful truck in America has taken it’s leadership spot in the nation’s capitol. So yes, I do, Scotts' Truck! The newest member of the Senate, Scott Brown (R-MA) finished casting his first votes of his Senatorial career today but what might be equally important to his supporters is that his beloved green GMC truck, one of the most memorable symbols of the campaign, has arrived at the Capitol. Brown’s staff said he and his wife drove it down from Massachusetts. As the John Kerrys of the world are shuttled around in ego vehicles like Black Escalades, Scott’s truck is a powerful symbol of his stance as a man who is going to change Washington, not be changed by it. After his upset victory over Democrat Martha Coakley, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Brown that he could park it anywhere he’d like on Capitol Hill. Looks like Brown has taken McConnell up on the offer. Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick got his term off to a bad start, from which he’s never recovered, by going right out and buying a new Caddy, redecorating the office, and flying around in the state helicopter before he’d done anything else. The snow-covered pickup was parked just outside of Brown’s office building, across from the Capitol, where it will likely make a regular appearance. Senators are permitted to park close to their offices. Scott cast his first vote today, as expected, joining the crowd in blocking an appointment important to the labor movement. Brown voted against seating union lawyer Craig Becker on the NLRB. The vote was 52-33, with many Senators not voting because they knew the nomination lacked the 60-vote supermajority needed to advance Becker’s nomination. Scott’s explanation? My first priority in coming to Washington is to create jobs and put people back to work. Craig Becker’s theories about how the workplace should function, if ever put into practice, would impose new burdens on employers, hurt job creation and slow down the recovery. Ah, the irony – the truck built by GM, a company driven into bankruptcy by the unions, sat outside as Scott cast a vote to break the hold the labor movement has over our government. A reminder that Scott is a representative of voters, not special interests, that old pickup is going to have to last a long time. Posted by: sickinmass at February 10, 2010 12:52 AM (Dxfei) 479

He is in good health regarding eating, sight, hearing and playfulness. But for the last couple of weeks, his hips have been giving him some serious problems. It takes him a couple of minutes to get up from a laying position and now he is really starting to limp. Any approved medical procedures that would help him at his age, or am I going to have to come to the realization that the end is near. I love that dog, greatest dog I have ever owned.

Well this is interesting, to say the least. Started looking at their paper and was a little shocked to see this: "Diocese sees more financial woes, to offer 1,800 buyouts" "Economics professor Charles Zeck, director of the Center for the
Study of Church Management at Villanova University's School of Business, said Monday he is not aware of any
U.S. diocese offering buyouts to employees on the scale pursued by
Rockville Centre.
"I've never seen anybody doing it at that level," Zeck said. "To have that many people reduced in one fell swoop like that, it's unheard-of." He called the 1,800 figure "eye-popping" and said "they must have some serious financial problems to be doing something of this magnitude." Ordinarily "the Church is really reluctant to let people go," he said. "They are a faith-based organization and Catholic social teaching tells us to be very careful about reducing employment for people." Wonder what the real story behind this actually is. The maddening thing about Obama's total ignorance of economics is that
the "news" media aren't hammering him on it. They should be asking him
questions, like "What the FUCK are you talking about, retard?" or "Are

The media so obviously not doing their job is the reason Breitbart hammered them hard in his Tea Party Convention speech: "Your business model doesn't suck -- you suck." Posted by: OregonMuse at February 10, 2010 01:03 AM (JkUVD) 509

Funny you should mention that. A student of mine, just the other day, was riding his bicycle without a helmet and he hit some object in the road, he doesn't know what, but it caused him to come to a sudden stop, wherein he was flung over the handlebars where he broke his collar bone and hit his head on the pavement. 582 There is no way in the planet of hell I would wear a helmet on a bike that has.....pedals. I'm sorry, but after years of having to wear a helmet on a harley, if you're going to wear a helmet on a pedal bike you might as wear one while watering the lawn. lol I ride over a thousand miles a year, easy. That's just on the road... add trail and it nearly doubles...I've been to the hospital for a lot of shit. The only head trauma I ever had was on a 1/8 mi. ride to the Post Office without a helmet. Only an idiot rides without one. I have been run over many times. I have wrecked miles into the wilderness (not designated, of course.). I have broken helmets in half doing these things and walked away...or hobbled away. But my noggin' is intact and I ahve yet to see that happen to the machismo douchebags I see riding shirtless and helmetless. Hell is not a planet... natasha richardson is the reason the government is pushing for the helmet law. what they don't say is that because of their socialist ineptitude, there was no helicopter in the whole freaking province to fly her to a hospital (there are emergency helicopters able to go to just about every small american town, but none in all of quebec), and no nearby hospital with the equipment necessary to treat her (but at least everyone is EQUALLY denied access to expert care, which is the important thing). so big government socialism helped kill her. but rather than fix that by allowing healthcare freedom, they are 'fixing' it by forcing every single skier to wear a helmet. screw them. if you aren't a good skier or aren't comfortable or ski in dangerous areas, then you should wear a helmet if you'd like. but no way should the government force you to.

Speaking of John Travolta, on Monday a suburb of ours had a fatal house fire. The deaths included two little girls aged 5 and 3. The dad did everything he could to save them apparently. You want to know why I know this? Because the fucking dad allowed himself to be interviewed by the press a short time after trying to save his dead daughters. I have absolutely lost any semblance of sympathy for humanity after hearing that. If it were my daughters, you would have heard about my death while trying to save them. If I were to somehow survive the fire trying to save my daughters but they didn't, then I would have slit the throat of the first media fuckhead who tried to get an interview from me. What the fuck is wrong with us??? Hell, if all of my children would have died in a tragic accident at one sitting, I would have eaten a bullet no questions asked later.

@696: "I'll tell you, that will be a problem. When I was a cop, the most violent domestic violence calls I used to make with the exception of homicide, were DV calls involving same sex couples. They would bloody the fuck out of each other." I used to have a lesbian couple across the street. They had some epic fights - throwing plates in the middle of the street, etc. Usually had to have several black-and-whites show up. I think young love that goes south (regardless of orientation) is probably the most dramatic. A few years back I lived in a different house--street had a more hip vibe to it. Anyway, one night at like 2am, I heard that Say Anything song playing (ghey). I looked out my window and saw my neighbor, younger than myself out there with recreating that queer scene. He had the long trenchcoat on with the boom box (double ghey). Girlfiend was throwing his shit out the window at him. We literally pulled up chairs to watch that go down. robert palmer, "addicted to love":
you like to think that you're immune to the stuff oh yeah, oh yeah! actually radical in its day. NOW raised a ruckus over the video. it marked a thermadorean reaction of sorts and the beginning of the role back (along with reagan) of the 70's leftist, egalitarian shibboleths including feminism. a new generation was coming along rejecting its anti-humanity. the video now seems clumsy and dated to these eyes; but it was racy and controversial. the song by itself stands up very well. REALLY! "addicted to love" became a controversial political issue of sorts. it came along at the high point of women eschewing the feminine (i.e sexual) for the professional, the family for the office, or at least women were told that they aspired to those things. NOW felt threatened. the big push-back was coming. but NOW's enemy wasn't robert palmer or his sexism, it was young women!
Posted by: gomm at February 10, 2010 03:33 AM (Ibk1S) 739
... & ya know what? great lyrics which actually are subversive in a way. in fact, the theme of women falling to their own passion runs through to the classics & the bard himself. women don't like to hear it & perhaps fear it. ah, the human condition...

Sounds familiar. The Tim Tebow ad generated a lot of controversy, not because it was bad, but because it was good. It was a good news story about a mom who chose life over abortion. And that life became a renowned football star in the person of Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. The pro-abortion people can't stand it, even though it represents a woman exercising her "right to choose" the right thing. They can't stand it because it's competition to the product they're trying to sell, namely, abortion. Posted by: sickinmass at February 10, 2010 03:45 AM (Dxfei) 741
For the upcoming fiscal year, Secretary Napolitano asked Congress for $11.6 million less in funding for “border security between ports of entry” and for $225.8 million less in funding for “border fencing, infrastructure, and technology.” And the President himself is not free from blame. The president’s newly proposed 2011 budget would reduce the number of Border Patrol agents along the southern border by 180, and cut funding for the virtual fenc -- a system of cameras, radar and sensors placed on towers -- by $226 million.

I guess Obama doesn't care that drug cartel violence is spilling across the border killing Americans. And he also doesn't care about the thousands of illegal aliens pouring across the wide open border using fraudulent and stolen identities who obtain driver's licenses as breeder documents to obtain security passes and badges to board aircraft and enter sensitive and secure facilities. Illegal aliens were aircraft cleaners, an illegal alien MS-13 gangster was a TSA screener, illegal aliens were found doing exterior facilities maintenance at a nuclear power plant and others were on military installations posing a danger to military personnel and other resources. All were using fake security badges and passes. Wake up and smell the coffee Mr Obama. All the billions spent on airport and other security doesn't amount to a hill of beans when our borders are wide open and you want to further open them just in time for the next illegal alien amnesty allowing thousands of unknown people to illegally enter the country every week including 6,000 from countries of special interest in 2008. Once again cheap labor for his union, corporate masters and more Democratic votes trumps the safety of the American people while he espouses his phony concern for unemployed, struggling and suffering Americans. After all, the deaths and unemployment of a few more Americans is acceptable to him as long as it doesn't impede his master's open borders, cheap labor and North American Union agenda. The Census Bureau spent $2.5 million for a 30-second Super Bowl ad (part of a $340 million campaign), and $13 billion on a school program to educate kids about the importance of the census. We are paying for it, while they just can't seem to find the money to close the border. Now, can we get priorities straight? Close the borders or count the thousands of illegals that come in here daily? Posted by: sickinmass at February 10, 2010 04:07 AM (Dxfei) 746

And we might get lucky! Seriously, we need to be far less passive when it comes to our elected representatives...for one thing, we need to constantly remind them (because even the best of them is rather dumb) that THEY work for US - and that they serve at OUR pleasure. Being a member of Congress is NOT a career choice. It’s a temporary period of public service. Got that you indolent slugs – TEMPORARY. Then you go back and get a real job just like the rest of us. And about those LAVISH pensions and health care benefits y’all have voted for yourselves. We need to have a serious chat fellas and gals about that nonsense as well! Since when do the EMPLOYEES tell the EMPLOYER what health benefits they must have? I don’t think so. Finally, serving 6 or 8 years in the House or Senate is not sufficient to justify the enormous pension to which you have entitled yourselves for the balance of your lifetimes. Time to revamp that little program as well. Just a smidge too much greed y’all. Let’s go out and hunt us down a new pack of semi-literate dimwits to serve us in Congress morons. And let’s try to get some who are not flaming psychopaths like John Murtha and Nancy Pelosi while we’re at it. ..my inner Gus came out and I apologize. Good Morning Morons Ah MTV and its demise. MTV destroyed itself, not because they gradually elliminated the music format. But because today's rock music is the absolute pits. And why is today's rock music such crap? Because MTV made it possible for all hype, flash and glitter to take the stage in place of real talent. The makers of MTV haven't abandoned the music format. Note that VH1 still does music. Classic rock music, i.e. music from the days before MTV.

The Weather Channel is pushing the meme that one cold Winter in the U.S. only doesn't mean and end the global warming theory. 803 Illinois has been having a run on geologic activity in the last 10 years or so -- it isn't exactly a hotbed for earthquakes, but we do have some techtonic rifts that can produce some suprises. There are some geologists that believe the next big one (ala New Madrid) will take place somewhere on the Wabash rift. While it won't seem like much to a Californian, due to the difference in the soil/substrate here and the type of buildings and infrastructure we have (we don't exactly build to any earthquake codes) we could be in for a real problem. The Wabash rift also contains some of the better farm land in the area...and state/federal government has used the area to store some pretty nasty chemicals -- plus there's the mine shafts...and a couple of really nasty methane caverns. This is from Rasmussen. I'm too lazy to do the linky thing today. Most voters think the country would be better off if the majority of the current Congress wasn’t reelected this November, and their confidence in their own congressman continues to fall. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 63% of likely voters believe, generally speaking, that it would be better for the country if most incumbents in Congress were defeated this November. Just 19% disagree and say it would be better if most congressional incumbents were reelected. Another 18% aren’t sure. The Political Class strongly rejects these views, however. While 78% of Mainstream voters say it would be better for the country if most of the current Congress was turned out of office, 89% of the Political Class think it would be better if most were reelected. The number of voters nationwide (61%) who give Congress a poor job performance rating is now at its highest level in more than three years. More voters also think most members of Congress are corrupt. Only 38% of all voters say their local representative in Congress deserves to be reelected, regardless of how Congress is doing overall. Thirty nine percent (39%) say their representative does not deserve reelection. Twenty-three percent (23%) are undecided.Posted by: Tami at February 10, 2010 09:32 AM (VuLos) 831

Sometimes not caring if you're a laughingstock can be a good thing as it means you don't mind taking the unpopular stance and are not led into herd mentality, but sometimes it simply means you're a damn twit.
