Obama: A Wonderful, Spirited Woman Died of Breast Cancer, and, While I Don't Recall Her Name, I Am Proud to Report She'll Be Buried in an Obama T-Shirt

What a lovely, lovely self-serving anecdote.

I hope this guy can attend my funeral and give a terrific eulogy about what a great guy he is. And then maybe gesture vaguely at my coffin and say, "And then there's this guy in the box, too."

Everyone is the hero of their own life-story, as they say.

President Obama is proud to steal scenes in everyone else's life-movie too.

Yes, those are the words of the president, last night at the Democratic National Committee fundraiser in Washington. After listing his administration's accomplishments and vowing that "our most urgent task is job creation," Obama pledged to keep fighting for a national health care system. "We knew this was hard," Obama said. And then he described a letter he received from a campaign worker who suffered from breast cancer and has since died:

I got a letter -- I got a note today from one of my staff -- they forwarded it to me -- from a woman in St. Louis who had been part of our campaign, very active, who had passed away from breast cancer. She didn't have insurance. She couldn't afford it, so she had put off having the kind of exams that she needed. And she had fought a tough battle for four years. All through the campaign she was fighting it, but finally she succumbed to it. And she insisted she's going to be buried in an Obama t-shirt.

Many observers have noted that the president often seems extraordinarily self-referential. It's all about him, they say. But even those critics might be a little taken aback by the "buried in an Obama t-shirt" remark. Is it really that much about him?

Yup. Well, look: There's obviously a difference between Stars and Extras, dude.

Cop Number 3's death scene in Lethal Weapon 2 isn't about Cop Number 3, of course. It's in the movie to provide emotional heft for the stars.

Memo to Obama: If you're going to traffic in this sort of crap, at least memorize her name, so her existence as a mere prop in your movie isn't quite as obvious.

Thanks to Slublog.

Oh: Is she now a corspe-woman?

Posted by: Stormtrooper #15 at February 05, 2010 03:44 PM (9Sbz+)

But what of the unsung victims?

Randal: A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I'll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers, aluminum siders, roofers.
Dante: Not just Imperials, is what you're getting at.
Randal: Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they'd hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms.
Dante: All right, so even if independent contractors are working on the Death Star, why are you uneasy with its destruction?
Randal: All those innocent contractors hired to do a job were killed- casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. (notices Dante's confusion) All right, look-you're a roofer, and some juicy government contract comes your way; you got the wife and kids and the two-story in suburbia-this is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. All of a sudden these left-wing militants blast you with lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. You didn't ask for that. You have no personal politics. You're just trying to scrape out a living.

Yup, it was that $30,000/couple fundraiser.  From the Daily Crawler today:

After his event at the Hilton, Obama spoke at a DNC high-stakes fundraiser for about 140 supporters, at a price of about $30,400 a couple, according to a DNC official. The two events raised between $2 and $3 milllion.

Couldn't one of those rich Obama supporters paid for this woman's health insurance instead of donating it to the DNC?  After all, they are the party of the "little people", the poor and downtrodden.  I'm thinking the woman was buried in an Obama t-shirt because with our bad economy, that's the only thing she had left tot wear--a free t-shirt that she "earned" by volunteering.  Geez, this pisses me off to no end!

Great:

"Shouse, 41, spent much of her last years fighting for health care reform. When first stricken with cancer, she put off getting treatment because she couldn't afford to pay her insurance policy's $5,000 deducible. Later she found it difficult to get her insurer to pay for procedures that might have saved her life."

Compare to:

"I got a letter -- I got a note today from one of my staff -- they forwarded it to me -- from a woman in St. And she insisted she's going to be buried in an Obama t-shirt."

[I guess she decided her life wasn't worth $5,000.  Strange: I think my life is worth more than that, and I don't value myself as highly as I do my kids, spouse, sibling, nieces, nephews....]

Most women should start regular breast cancer screening at age 50, not 40, according to new guidelines released Monday by an influential group that provides guidance to doctors, insurance companies and policy makers.

It also says women age 50 to 74 should have mammograms less frequently — every two years, rather than every year. And it said doctors should stop teaching women to examine their breasts on a regular basis.

NYTIMES November 16, 2009

Just seven years ago, the same group, the United States Preventive Servic Task Force with different members, recommended that women have mammograms every one to two years starting at age 40. It found too little evidence to take a stand on breast self-examinations.

The task force is an independent panel of experts in prevention and primary care appointed by the federal Department of Health and Human Services   .

Yeah.  That seems odd to me.  Even when I didn't have $5k in the bank, my family would have lent it to me.  And clinics will work out payment plans--I've got a friend who has been paying for her breast cancer treatment for 25 years, something like $20/mo.  (I'm sure the clinic wrote it off years ago, but there was a plan, and she pays it.)

Of course, I grew up in the bitter clinger part of the country, where communities have chili suppers and silent auctions and leave a can out by the register at the gas station to help people who need big money for medical treatments, so I don't grok this mindset where it's better to depend on Washington DC than your friends and neighbors.

Wow that was awesome.  Obama was trying to pull on the crownds heartstrings when he said the lady was going to wear an Obama T-Shirt to her grave but the audience just laughed (a room full of leftists too, you can imagine if this had happened at the Republican retreat).  You could tell he got upset about the laughing because he kind of upbraided the crowd a little bit saying "but, but , but think about this" in kind of a scolding tone before going on with the sob story which culminated in a little "win one for the gipper" type action in the form of  a "Hey, let's pass ObamaCare for some dead lady who's name I can't recall " type of appeal.

Ace is right though, it's the not remembering the lady's name that makes it so messed up. .

a sad story altogether, people sometimes make wrong choices, this one was a terminal mistake

Obama was wrong to address this in two way. one to draw attention to His health care bill, which shuts mammograms down for women unless they are 50 years of age. or have high risk factors

listen to their excuse for not .

While many women do not think a screening test can be harmful, medical experts say the risks are real. A test can trigger unnecessary further tests, like biopsies, that can create extreme anxiety. And mammograms can find cancers that grow so slowly that they never would be noticed in a woman’s lifetime, resulting in unnecessary treatment

well let's not have them then! i might become anxious!

two, that it wasn't about her dieing of breast cancer at all, he made it about her caring for Him and a health care bill that wouldn't have saved her

Using herself as an example, Ms. Shouse said she had put off going to a doctor because her health insurance policy had a $5,000 deductible.

So naturally she and her friends picketed the insurance company instead of finding a way to come up with 5 grand.

Nice friends.

Well, moonbats tend to hang out in clumps.  So her idiot friends didn't have any money either.  I'm always amazed (I know I shouldn't be) by people that squander their money on all kinds of crap (fabulous trips, nice cars, i-phones, going out partying) but then don't have any saved to take care of bare essentials.  They are completely relying on their friends, family or the gubamint to take care of them if something unexpected should happen.  This woman was a complete liberal idiot.  She had her hope in government run health care.  She didn't take responsibility for herself.

Uh, hello?  Since when is cancer is something other than catastrophic?

And, if your insurance company refused to pay for your treatment, then that would be because your insurance didn't cover it so you'd have to pay out of pocket.  Let's get a public option, though, so you'll be covered for any treatment and be scheduled for it approximately 7 months after you're dead, okay?

Melanie had health insurance coverage. Sort of. Back in 2005 she was an entrepreneur struggling to grow her small business. She could only afford a catastrophic health insurance policy with co-pays and deductibles nearing $10,000.

I thought it was $5,000

At this point, Melanie had some coverage, in the form of Missouri’s Medicaid program – a public option, if you will. And she got better, for a spell. But then her private carrier denied coverage for a treatment her oncologist had recommended. She appealed, to no avail.

So she got some government aid and miraculously felt better then the evil insurance company denied her coverage and she died. What a story

Melanie requested that those attending wear their activist t-shirts.

For my part - and this is going to sound horrible - maybe she should have spent more of her free time at a second job so she could afford her own health insurance instead of working on his campaign to force the rest of us into getting them.

Or she could have contributed to a Health Care Savings account so that she could pay for that deductible with pre-tax dollars.  But like someone else said, she CHOSE that policy, and she made the decision to put off seeing a doctor, even AFTER she found the lump.  If she was under 40 when the cancer first started, a mammogram probably wouldn't have caught it early enough anyway - breast tissue tends to be too dense to see tumors.

328 Heather,

I live in St. Louis, and that stuff happens all the time here too.  Noticed the other day that the 7-11 down the corner has a tip jar for a lady in need in the community, and it was filled to the brim.  A neighbor got seriously hurt by a drunk driver, and the condo association staged fundraisers for her to assist in treatment and mobility for her new disability.  Same thing happened for a man that worked in our office's cafeteria and was ill.  My girlfriend works at a children's rehab center in Maryland Heights, and has all kinds of stories about how people in the community come through when they have to.

People that show decency towards others will get an outpouring of support from their communities that the government simply cannot match, even with the best of intentions.  This is true in rural, suburban, and urban America.

Posted by: Dave S at February 05, 2010 05:23 PM (PZak5)

329 Also according to the article, the treatment was denied after the cancer had spread to her bones and liver. Having lost a father like this, once CA hits the liver it's all over. These people must get all their health information from General Hospital.

Linked from the other story:

So when the lump came, denial seemed the most pragmatic option. When diagnosis finally followed, the cancer had spread through her body to bone, lungs and liver. It was Stage 4 breast cancer.

So she waited to get a diagnosis - the cost of the doctor's visit wouldn't have been anywhere near $5000!  This chick grew up in Plano, Texas - richville.  She graduated from Texas A&M University (how did she get to be a liberal in the first place, is what I'm wondering...) - they have one of the largest alumni groups in the country, well known for their enthusiastic philanthropy.

If her insurance company denied an expensive procedure for her, chances are that they knew that it would be wasted money - if the cancer had spread to the liver, she was already a goner.  She had a degree in biology - she should have already KNOWN THAT.  Obamacare wouldn't have covered this - and she wouldn't have gotten a mammogram in time, either.

I wonder if these wonderful friends of hers will attend her Muster (an Aggie tradition where all alumni who have passed away in the previous year are remembered) in April; hopefully they will dress appropriately, and not in their "activist" T-Shirts....

I remember this guy, middle-class, he was my father-in-law, I can't remember his name though. He died of cancer. The insurance company knew that but wouldn't pay anything.

Oh wait, that's not how it happened. See he got cancer in the lung, surgery removed the spot and chemo did the rest to kill the cancer. He went to the MD Anderson Clinic in Houston. The cancer came back, maybe less than a year later, in his head and elsewhere. He went back to MD Anderson and they couldn't do anything. Eventually he came back home and died a few months later. His insurance paid for everything. Image that, someone having insurance, medical bills actually paid, and still dying of cancer.

I am really astounded by how ignorant people are, but then a large part of the problem is that people are completely sheltered from knowing the costs.

362 he was taken aback when the audience started laughing.  not the reaction he was going for.  Clinton would have had them eating out of his hand, pause to choke back some tears, compose himself, bite the bottom lip, wipe a little tear from the corner of his eye.  Clinton would have known her name, used it several times during the speech.  barry you are an amateur.  you are not worthy of the master.

363 To His Most Glorious Highness Barack I, God of All He Surveys, Master of the World, Divine Pontiff. I know that my death will be a disappointment to You, since You wished to render me this service Yourself. To be born in Your reign is a miscalculation; but to die in it is a joy. I can forgive You for murdering our economy, for burning our beloved Constitution, for befouling our fair country with the stench of Your crimes (and hey, let's be fair, the hideousness of Your wife). But one thing I cannot forgive - the boredom of having to listen to Your speeches, Your second-rate drivel, Your mediocre remarks. Adhere to Your special gifts, Lord Obama - campaigning, and speechifying, lying and incompetence. Mutilate Your subjects if You must; but with my last breath I beg You - do not mutilate the art of rhetoric. Fare well but make no more speeches. Brutalise the people but do not bore them, as You have bored to death Your friend, the late Fa Cube Itches.

Yeah, but G.G. was at least arguably sane.....

369 The SOTU was a turning point and we're finally seeing El Presidente's true colors; i.e. an ego the size of Montana. (no offense, Montana) Every woman's organization, every Breast Cancer group, anyone who cares about human dignity, and especially the family involved, should issue statements of outrage. And some story verification should be done here. I suspect that 'the family's right to privacy' will be parroted for a few days before we discover events did not happen as they were presented. The One is a master of the slippery phrase, and the line about being passed a note by one of his staff, as a correction about reading a letter, wasn't a misstep or casual conversation. It's all about plausible deniability.

ACE,

Tonight Hannity played the video of Obama delivering that bizzaro-rama eulogy for his 'nameless' campaign worker who - according to the Messiah - her most important life accomplishment was getting buried in an Obama T-shirt.

What's interesting is that Hannity's tagline sarcastic criticism was uncannily similar to your own from last week. Here's how Hannity ended the segment: "...does this campaign worker have a name. And if so, Mr. President, you might want to learn it the next time around, so it's not so obvious you're using her as a prop for your political agenda."

You wrote: "Memo to Obama: If you're going to traffic in this sort of crap, at least memorize her name, so her existence as a mere prop in your movie isn't quite as obvious."

Is this really coincidence? Or are you moonlighting on Hannity's writting staff? Or is someone on his writting staff a flattering fan of this blog?

O.K., let me try to figure out where to start.  !. Her name is Melanie Shouse.  Since she had died that day, it's quite likely Obama didn't mention her name because he hadn't gotten in touch with Steve to find out if he would mind.  It really would have been rude to do so without asking him.

If you doubt that Melaine was buried in her North County for Obama Tshirt- you're right .  She was cremated in it.  She asked all of us who attended her memorial service to dress appropriately, and to make it a rally instead of a service.  We had the service, the rally is going to be in DC.  And, we have a caravan going from St Louis to attend.

Melanie didn't have insurance through the campaign because she was a volunteer, not an employee.  Actually she was a volunteer before there was a campaign. She didn't have the cancer treated in the early stage because her insurance included about $8000 in Copays and deducibles. She and Steve had just stated a business and didn't have an extra $100, much less $8000.  Ironically, if she had been unable to afford any insurance at all, there would have been programs she might have qualified for.

For those of you who wondered why the audience laughed when Obama said she asked to be buried in her Obama TShirt- Ya know, I can't explain it if you don't already know.  But- it's kind  of a "You go, girl" thing.  Melanie was a good friend of mine ( nothing special- Melanie  was a good friend to everyone who knew her) and I laughed --while I cried.       Like I said ---if you didn't understand, you never will.

And for those you made various comments concerning the fact that she is dead and you're not particularly unhappy about that.  Melanie is so much more alive today and forever than you will ever be.
